Not the day that I wanted, but perhaps the day that I needed. Thank you all so much for your support, both from spectators and from my fellow runners. It meant more to me than you know. I am sorry to have let you down.
Today, so many others had great successes, and I will focus on being a good friend and teammate.
Today, I will try to remember that this is still an improvement over last year’s result. And I will remember that finishing a marathon, regardless of time, is something to be proud of. Because no marathon finish is ever guaranteed.

Fantastic effort, Michael. I said it on Strava and I'll say it again - you fought through it and finished when you could have easily quit as soon as you knew you weren't going to hit your goal. You have the mental fortitude to keep pushing to the finish. That's saying a lot. Not every day is the day we envision but we keep moving forward, we keep showing up, we keep trying. You're now 0-1 for your sub-3 attempts. I'm 0-3. One of my good friends was about 0-10 until he finally cracked it in his early 40's. The point is, you'll have more chances and when you do break 3, it will be that much sweeter. Let the disappointment soak in and fuel you for the next try. You'll get it, no doubt. Like you said, 3:15 is still an improvement over last year and it's also a time most people would dream about running. Keep your head high, you didn't let anyone down.

Michael, don't be so hard with yourself. You have not let anyone down!!! You are a constant inspirations to all of us, and that does not depend on breaking 3 or not. I would say it might be even more inspirational to see the kind way you replied to the people after finishing despite having not achieved what you wanted. That's real greatness!!!

After going through your race video playlist, I am amazed by your transformation over the last 3 years. Nothing to be ashamed of here, you should only be proud of your tremendous progress as a runner. Just remind yourself that improvement is not always linear (it rarely is after early stages), and keep at it because you're obviously training the correct way. Congrats on yet another sub 3:30 finish, look forward to seeing more of your race videos!

Michael, Since getting back into running about a year ago I found your channel and was hooked ever since. When I saw you were from Chicago I instantly felt a connection because I recognized all the places you run and wanted to run those very places too. Since last summer I have run the lakefront more than ever before. When I saw all your summer runs and the gorgeous sunrises that you captured I said to myself I want to see those too. It made me get out of bed and go run when it would have been easy to sleep in. You have provided so many of us inspiration. I would have never stayed with running the way I have if it hadn't been for your channel and Seth's. Meeting you at the shakeout run is something I will never forget. Congratulations on running and finishing the Chicago Marathon. I can only dream of being as dedicated, passionate and inspiring as you are to all of us! Thank you for everything you do for all of us! You are a Champion!!

You are one of a couple people who helped motivate me to lose 150 pounds this year and pick up my new found love of running. Ive done 6 5k races this year. A 10k next weekend and my first half marathon in march. Ive NEVER been a runner until this year and I'm 27. So im definitely a newbie. Im running close to 30 miles a week now andand a 8:30 to 9 minute pace (which is still slow). And i owe a lot of it to you and your content. Thank you for being you and congrats on your finish. As someone getting back into running, and trying to regain my love, your videos have been insanely helpful. I saw you run by me at Mile 20 (at the 3run2 cheerzone) and started screaming for you (you can see me in the video). So you end up expending more energy and uslay end up running more than the 26.2 miles too. More so in the WMM because of the amount of people running it. But I totally understand what you mean as well with him being anxious. He will definitely crack 3 soon 👍

I really hope you can bounce back from this. Yes I know you have wanted to achieve under 3 hours in the Marathon but you can see in your training you can achieve that even if it didn’t happen this time. You have all our support and learn from this race to know what you can change. You’ve got this kofuzi!

It sucks that your race didn't go down as you had hoped, but I applaud you for sharing and Finishing!!! More than a few big names in Chicago dropped out this yr. It happens.

I’ve been watching the vlog fairly regularly and you’ve been a huge inspiration for me this past year. I ran Chicago this weekend and really wanted to meet you, but was a couple corrals back (and couldn’t make the group run). You may be disappointed by missing your time goal, but I hope you draw satisfaction from the fact that you’ve inspired lots of us to set big goals and are giving us the knowledge and practical advice to meet those goals. I could not have run my PR yesterday without the encouragement I’ve drawn from this vlog!

Congratulations! You didn’t let anyone down. Not every race is a PR. You still ran an amazing time and it’s inspiring that you kept going even when it got tough. And were thanking the volunteers after it was over. Also, so many vapor flys! It’d be interesting to see at what pace runners you start seeing less of them.

I know it’s not what you wanted but 3:15 it’s a great time for a marathon! Keep working hard and striving for more! I enjoy your videos and you have inspired me to attend a sub 3 as well. Mine it’s in December. But regardless you are inspiring a lot of us out there! 🙌🏻

No need to be sorry, of course. You just ran one of the finest marathons on the planet and did it faster than last year! Congratulations on your performance! Consolation on your disappointment at falling short of your main goal. Next one! Enjoy your down time, you've earned it.

Had a similar experience yesterday at the Victoria Marathon. Barely got under 4 hours but missed my goal of 3:45. Hit the wall at 30 km mark and dragged my feet to the finish in pain. Still a personal best time like you said. Keep up the great work and get it next time! It’s been inspiring to watch your videos throughout my training.

Consider your circumstances and value what you've accomplished so far. Failure is there to teach us lessons and make us stronger. Review the numbers that you had before the race (training) and get ready for the next one! You're amazing and inspire a lot of people, what happened yesterday happens even to the best, that's the human condition.

The last marathon (and final maybe ever) I ran I was 4+ min short of my goal. I was pretty bummed with myself but shook it off rather quickly. Getting back to trails and ultras, times were so less significant and freeing. Marathons hamstring you in to tight time goals and anything off, even if by a minute, is often seen as a failure. That's one thing, of many, I don't miss in road races. Regardless, it looks like it was a great day for a run and tons of crowd support. Congrats and enjoy the recovery!

I can’t remember when I started watching your videos and then I started running as well. You truly inspired me and guided me to this beautiful world. No need to say sorry and keep fighting!

No worries it happened to me this weekend in Albany NY, worked hard to BQ but at 30 Km or so major blister and missed my goal by a lot. Hey that’s life and if marathon running would be that easy everybody would do it. We just have to push the reset button and go back to work and learn from the mistakes. Good job!

You didn't let anybody down. Its taken me a long time to learn that the people who support and admire you do because of the fight, not the victory.

Sorry that you didn't make your goal man but hey there's plenty of time to make amends. You've been and will continue to be an inspiration to us runners. Look forward to seeing you talk about your race!

You have definitely not let anyone down. I was tracking you yesterday hoping you would get the sub-3. The marathon is a tough and often cruel event. You can have the best of training in the build up and not get the result you expected on the day. It took me a good few attempts to get a sub-3 so just keep training hard (but smart) and good things will happen. Hopefully having the coach from Nike has given you an insight into how to vary your training and what went well, and what did not go well. Whenever I have a bad race and not get the result I wanted, it is OK to wallow and be disappointed because it shows how much you care about running and wanting to better yourself. Don’t overanalyse things straightaway as to what went wrong but definitely have a debrief a few days after with your coach. Rest up and have a well-earned break. Don’t be tempted to come back too soon so you can come back stronger both physically and mentally.
