I began reading John's books when I first moved to Western Montana and took up fly fishing. I found a few books in the local library and became addicted. For my 50th birthday, my wife gave me a complete set of his works (except the poetry books, which are almost impossible to find). What I realized is that the books as much to do with strategies for living a good life as they have to do with fishing. I've been saddened a little bit by the last 2 or 3 books. They no longer talk about fishing with A.K. Best, except nostalgically. Do you happen to know his status? I think A.K. may have helped my wife untangle her line once when we were fishing on the Colorado in October. 10 minutes later she caught a 14" brown. She went back to shore to thank him and he'd disappeared.
