Hi folks.
This is a, sort of, recap to my time on the SUPERB Africa Twin.
We had just spent a weekend camping in Wales, which is where I rode my first miles (and IT's first miles) on it.
It's clear from this video how I feel about it.
This bike, as it stands, with all the fitted extras would cost £17,244.
Base model RRP is £12,999

I remembered being so impressed with this video, photography, location and the review of the bike. Just revisited to see if the 1000 DCT was any lesser performer than the 1100, I think not. Love the graphics, sound an overall look of this one........Great video, many thanks 👍

Great review 👏🏻 As for the fly tipping, I think the gas canister gives it away, as to who has dumped the rubbish.

You have just relieved my Lockdown blues. The roads you picked are favourites of mine and funnily enough I did the lane a while ago in the mud on an 06 1200 GS with the lovely Louise as pillion. Hilarious! and the Honda certainly handled it better. Love your enthusiasm and on the back of this the Honda with DCT has gone to the top of my list as a replacement for the GS.

I bought a DCT back in 2016 when they came out. I went for it as I'd enjoyed a couple of test rides. Ultimately I didn't get on with DCT as it lacked the involvement I wanted in a bike so I sold it after 900 miles. I prefer to have a regular gearbox - especially with an upshifter and blipper which you'd imagine is quite similar to DCT! Can't explain why - just horses for courses. I also felt it was a little top heavy and tall for me (32" inseam, 5ft 11 ins). And my spokes rusted! Everything else was great though.

The AT, was my first dream adventure bike, then i saw the tenere700 with a little less gadgetry, and 1 or 2 other bikes with other things, but i keep seeing the AT, videos like yours and its videos like yours, thats cemented it for me permanently, thars just no comparison it has to be the africa twin no question about and the one i preferred to start off with, and yes i agree its got the look of a animated superhero look of it and the sound is better than the rest. 👍

I'm a short rider, 5'4" with a 30" inseam. I find my AT very easy to manage. I don't try to put both feet down, most of the time. I leave my right foot on the peg and put my left foot flat on the deck.

As an owner of an '18 Adv Sports, the buffeting can be remediated with a formatted plastic piece that covers the back half of the fork tunnel.

For me anyway the Africa Twin is the best looking by a long way of all the adventure bikes. I rode one when they 1st came out. I had the bike for 2 days and put 700 miles on it, and found it comfy and capable on road. Its a big bike but the engine was a bit dull, a bit meh. Dunno if they've improved engine performance now or not. For on road use the powerplant is a bit uninspiring. Thanks Rich.

How long ago ? I test drove the 2018 model (and bought the 2019) and touched 90mph and still felt like it had much more power to give.
@markjones3425
@markjones3425 5 лет назад
I owned a 2017 standard shift and thought it had great power. I did NOT drive it in low RPMS but rather enjoyed the 1000cc engine in 45-7500rpm range and had a gas!!....and had to gas up a lot...but what fun! Great bike. I took it on a 14000km ride around South America and drove it completely differently, very calm low RPM and low speed most of the time to save rubber and make the next gas station...started in San Antonio Chile rode north a few hundred miles then to the Patagonia through Argentina and Southern Chile crossing the Andes numerous times, then back north again crossing the Andes often and to the northern sections of Argentina, back in the Alti Plano of Chile and Peru, to Ecuador and finally Columbia, tons of off road mixed conditions, snow, rain, very high winds, blazing sun, deep mud, water crossings and millions of turns and twists on very fun routes!! etc. The bike NEVER skipped a beat and had TONS of power even at 4800m above sea level. Its an outstanding machine, and extremely forgiving and easy to ride.

And is a bit weird that only one exhaust pipe gets dirty,the other one will always look new,or newer,and all the mud from front wheel and dirt goes straight on frame. You shoud get one,you are Honda guy! 👍

I don't understand, why shaft? It's heavier, it robs power and it still needs maintenance, also a cost if it takes a prang . Chains last a long time if cleaned and lured and that takes minutes every now and then. Unless you are doing 700 mile days day in day out I'd take chain every time. But whatever floats your boat.

I think this is a very well rounded and thought out video and description of the attributes of the Africa Twin DCT. I really liked that he could ride and talk, without wind buffeting interruption. I'd like to have riding that quiet. I know that's more than likely an attribute of the camera used more than anything else. I'm new to the AT and the DCT and so far, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I appreciate, how much he APPRECIATES the bike and all it offers. Great video and representation of the bike. I especially liked the way he condemned the trashy area he found. Some people are such boneheads.

Great review, I picked up an Africa Twin Adventure Sports a couple of weeks ago. I love it, been riding for over 45 years and this is in the top 5 bikes I have ever owed or ridden. Im 5'11" and ride with the seat in the low position. I didnt get any buffeting with the stock shield but in cooler weather I feel its way too "vented" so for now I popped on a Puig Touring shield and the airflow is just at perfect. I have zero complaints about anything on the bike. I grew up on dirt bikes so the height doesn't bother me. I read on the forums of people replacing the seat and I have come to the conclusion people just replace shit on a motorcycle for bragging rights. "oh look at my new $1000 seat"...... The stock seat is fine. I ride 120 miles a day to work and my butt hasn't complained yet. This might be the perfect motorcycle for me. Oh and mine is a manual.

I've got a F800GS that I use off road and on road, only use it off road if it's relatively dry though, because even with the Mitas E-07's I've fitted it's a proper handful in any mud !! It takes a GOOD rider to handle this size bike in knarly off road conditions. Them lanes would be a completely different proposition in the wet, and then to make it doable you need to compromise road handling by fitting more aggressive tyres. I went for a slightly older 800, spent money on crash protection for it, and a low seat to help my little old legs cope ... and I love it. I looked a a AT, and I think it would be even better than my 800 all round, but they are just too bloody tall !! People knock the "adventure style" bikes, but I've had all sorts over the last 35 years and I love the riding position.

@@jaypuck6912 the GS8 is staying for a while, my point is that these big adventure bikes take some handling off road if it's wet and muddy, and you need to be a good rider, which I'm not ! I have the NC750X DCT and love it, It is amazing the amount of bikers that say - yeah dct (crap) then they get a shot and absolutely love it too. I love the africa twin, but the only thing that puts me off is the height and the tft screen looks quite boring compared to the bmw tft. Great review, thanks for uploading

@vctm1 5 лет назад
Jake Honda I’ve had the NC750X DCT for 4 years and now own an Africa Twin DCT. You can get the height of the AF reduced, the operation costs about 200€ and is reversible. Gets the AF to the same height as the NC. Btw I love both bikes equally, many common qualities (smoothness...) with each their own twist.

I prefer the r1200/1250 gs. The cruise control for example is a must have, if your doing hundreds of highway miles.

Brilliant video Sir really enjoyed it. I'm into my 4th year of CRF1000 ownership, the DCT is very addictive. That Honda tall screen just doesn't work on the bike, in fact shorter screens work better, I have stock screen with MRA spoiler added.

Great video you answered questions as I was watching I thought what’s the clutch lever for then those indicators seem on lol great job and it looks quite quick I ride my gsa quite quick and thought the Honda may be a little lacking but she seems like a goer I may have to book a test ride well done Richy 👍👍👍

Another cracking film Rich. I quite like the bike and have seen plenty of great reviews but its a total world away from your VFR so praise from yourself is praise indeed. Just wondered how much to fill the tank and what miles it does till a refill. Cracking photos at the end as well. Cheers Rich
@RichyVida
@RichyVida 5 лет назад
Didn't really fil from empty, so couldn't really say. It has an 18ltr tank (VFR has 21ltr). I think approx 160miles to the tank - maybe a touch more...

Once again Richy a brill video,very informative. Know what you mean about DCT. I ride a 750X with DCT and after enduring some flack from mates who said ''It's a scooter''🛵 But i absolutely love it , by the way, don't know if you can fit a electronic foot gear pedal on to a Africa twin but I've had one fitted to my 750X really changes the feel of bike it's more like a quickshifter. Keep up the good work 😁
@gordonLP
@gordonLP 5 лет назад
I would imagine with the DCT in manual the foot shifter would be quite good (I have an X-ADV so I'm aware of the options), but you then have to question why have the DCT version as its heavier, more complicated and cost more. I'm still not sure about the DCT, for me it always seems to be in the wrong gear when you want to overtake (I know you can knock it down, but it will nearly always just change up again), it also has an annoying habit of changing up whilst cornering on round-abouts, I think on balance from my experience with DCT, I would stick with the manual option.

Another great video mate, thank you. The front end always reminds me of a mad sonic the hedgehog 😂. Whats the difference in between the crosstourer and the Africa twin?? Both similar models? Just wondering why Honda have brought similar bikes out?? Thanks again for another very enjoyable and informative video 👍👍
@kevinwestwood6668
@kevinwestwood6668 5 лет назад
The Africa twin is more off road focused, it has a 21" front wheel, spoked wheels, tubed tyres,you wouldn't take a cross tourer off road.

I’ve had one for a 18 months now, didn’t really like the DCT at first. Now I think it’s a great bike, standard tyres are shite in the wet. The only thing I would change is to tubeless as I don’t get why Honda went with tubes

Oh this is an easy one. Cruise control? ABS? Cast aluminum wheels instead of spoked? Tubeless? Much larger gas tank AND a reserve tank? 50 more HP? Shaft drive? If I was shopping for a bike like these, it would be the BMW all the way. I'll choose an F850GS over the Honda as well, without most of the features I just mentioned.

Was going have gear assist pro fitted to my GS until I tested 1250, glad I didn't it's not very good. Loads will say it's brill but it ain't, very aggressive up shift worked better down the box!! Think Honda with the DSG box has the best idea a true twin plate gear shift which is linear..... just sayin!
