A small, affordable SUV makes a perfect city runabout. In this 2019 Honda HR-V review, we take Honda's smallest and most affordable crossover around the busy city streets of downtown Los Angeles. And then we drive it through the hilly neighborhoods surrounding the city to test its driver aids, passenger comfort and surprisingly large cargo space. Is the HR-V the best option for college kids and city dwellers, or are there competitors in the subcompact SUV class?
What's New for the 2019 HR-V
Refreshed front and rear styling
New Sport and Touring trim levels
New center screen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Honda Sensing suite adds multiple available safety features
About the 2019 Honda HR-V
By the very nature of their size, subcompact crossover SUVs can't offer the practical benefits that larger SUVs do. Check the spec sheets and you'll find that many don't even have as much cargo space as similarly priced compact hatchbacks. The 2019 Honda HR-V is one vehicle that does a great job of overcoming its size limitations, however. A thoughtful interior layout that includes the second-row Magic Seat, which can flip up so you can carry tall items, gives the HR-V more passenger room and greater storage space than others in the class.
Honda has also made improvements this year. New front and rear styling cues differentiate the 2019 HR-V from last year's. But you'll probably be more interested in the expanded list of features, which includes a volume knob (the car previously had an annoying-to-use touch-sensitive volume slider) and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality for the 7-inch touchscreen. The Honda Sensing suite of advanced driver safety features is another new addition for EX trims and above. Shoppers looking for additional luxuries will be pleased with the new Touring trim, which bolsters the HR-V with LED headlights and foglights, alongside a power-adjustable driver's seat and a navigation system.
Unfortunately, the HR-V's underpowered engine is the same for 2019. Though fuel-efficient, the Honda HRV is slow and noisy when you mash the gas. Honda has also discontinued the manual transmission. We doubt many people were opting for it, but it helped make the most of the HR-V's available power. Overall, though, the HR-V's exceptional utility makes this pint-size Honda a top pick in the class.
The 2019 HR-V is the least expensive crossover in Honda's stable, but thanks to the number of features offered, it doesn't have to feel like an econobox special. Five trim levels are available: HR-V LX, HR-V Sport, HR-V EX, HR-V EX-L and HR-V Touring. All three models are powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (141 horsepower, 127 lb-ft of torque) and a CVT automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on all models except the Touring, which comes with the other models' optional all-wheel-drive system.
Honda HR-V Interior
The HR-V's interior is more useful than that of any other vehicle in the class, with a nifty rear seat that can fold or swing up and out of the way. The space for rear passengers is excellent. Average-size adults can actually fit back there, which can't be said for a lot of subcompact crossovers. But the front seats lack legroom and adjustment range for tall folks.

Reviewers are spoiled with fast cars, so when they get into a normal car, all the say is,”Oh my God, so slow.” “I’ll never pass traffic because I suck at driving, so I need a superior car to overpower everyone else.”... Good thing you’re not a race car driver, because in a real race, you’re not going to pass anyone easily.

Last Monday [MLK Day] I bought a new 2022 HR-V LX in Modern Steel Metallic, and haven't had the slightest problem easily passing other vehicles. Plenty of "get up and go." And I love this car's CVT - very smooth, quiet and responsive. If you WANT a sports car, then BUY a sports car... not an HR-V. The HR-V is a comfortable, easy-handling, versatile, great everyday vehicle with fantastic fuel economy in ECO mode. Plus, it earns Consumer Reports highest score for reliability. And I can highly recommend it.

ECON mode is only intended for use on the highway AFTER you have gotten up to cruising speed. You should never turn ECON on until AFTER the air conditioning system has lowered the cabin to a comfortable temperature. Dinged for HP? How did we make it when many cars had less than 100hp? This is a Honda for budget conscious buyers, looking for value and long term reliability. I cannot find a car review that’s not obsessed with more hp. Rant over. The lane watch camera is a very helpful tool. I’ve had it on my 2015 Fit for almost 5 years now, and would miss not having it. The light, rather than camera, isn’t very informative. have always found the backup camera to be fairly useless for the same reasons given here with regard to lane watch camera. I do use backup camera to judge distance to the rear when parking, and that’s it. Good thorough review of the HRV.

My 2021 HR-V has a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder that makes only 141 HP. It IS underpowered, but the cop said his Lazer calibration was confirmed and it's not too underpowered to go 98 MPH. Evedently, speeding to clear the left lane for faster moving traffic is wrong when the faster moving traffic just happens to be an unmarked police car chasing you down for speeding.

@supergeorge2752 5 лет назад
@@SonyEnthusiast Mine was a front wheel drive, manual - 6 speed transmission, no ECO mode. It was moving a little better when RPM was kept in the 3500-4000 range but it was noisy. Compare that with the Civic's 1.5 turbo direct injected engine that dumps all it torque from 2000 RPM and up (and builds even more power from there) and you have a winner. The HR-V needs the 1.5 T engine. It would not be over or under powered. The HR-V with the CVT is OK, if you have given up on life, in zombie mode, and just want to go from point A-to-B.

I feel Honda may have been better off using a different powertrain formula with a smaller turbo engine and a 6+ speed auto or manual, instead of a CVT, for the HR-V (I see in another comment here that it is, in fact, available that way in other countries). As a comparable example, we recently got a base Mini Countryman ALL4 with the 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo. I was skeptical of its lower power rating versus the 2.0 S for a vehicle of its size and weight, but the combination of the flat torque curve starting at low revs with an 8-speed auto really gets the most out of a small power plant and it cruises like a champ. It's not a rocket ship, but it doesn't feel anemic and I don't fear hills!

On my 2017 Pilot it was there and it was the most convenient feature, no head turning, nothing, just pick quickly at the center screen and u could see the lines and where the car on ur right was in milliseconds. Since I sold it and got 2 luxury vehicles with the blinking light, which unless the color of the car is black or its dark outside, the blinking lights are unnoticeable, then u actually have to take ur eyes off the road and look at the mirror to determine where the other car is. Give us reviews to watch of vehicles based on category and price and not on a wish list. It makes no sense.

@brocklanders6969
@brocklanders6969 5 лет назад
No, it's the engine's lack of power. Honda's 1.5 turbo is in the Civic and CR-V and both are quick with CVTs. CVTs might not be the best performance choice when it comes to transmissions, but there are used in many vehicles that still provide good acceleration. A DCT or traditional automatic would do little, if anything to make the HR-V quicker.
@supergeorge2752
@supergeorge2752 5 лет назад
Sorry but you are wrong on this. It is the lackluster engine. The 1.5T Civic is faster with the CVT than with the manual trans. You loose out when you make the shift from first to second gear. Look it up. CVT keeps constant power to the wheels. Modern auto and CVTs are faster than manual trans. Manual trans is favorable for those that feel the need to be in control or sometimes called " enthusiast".

It feels dangerously slow, like the smallest 4 cyl cars from 1970s if you got the optional 2 speed auto trans. Have to floor it just to get it moving. The 140 HP rating is deceiving, it can only get that power at very high revs (6500) that are not accessible with an auto. The torque is even worse-saw a curve on the internet that shows about 60 pound feet at the 2500 rpm that most people drive .

It's fine for most people. Only bad drivers and those that drive very short on-ramps feel it is dangerously slow.

Why complain about power when the car is designed for fuel economy in mind. It comes with a CVT. What do you expect ? Get someone that’s not so focus on fun-to-drive and power to do the review please (don’t have a commuter driver to review a BMW M car)

Disagree....The Civic is also made for fuel economy (40 MPG+ on the hwy all day), but they did not under power it. 1.5 turbo or 2.0 NA.

I can't stand CVT transmissions. Sure it's great for fuel economy but that droning noise when the gas is pushed is terrible. Some CVTs have sort of fixed that problem, but I'd rather have a conventional 6-speed automatic or a dual-clutch system. Oh and Honda needs to get rid of that old infotainment system and put in the new ones like the ones found on the newer Accords.
