2019 HP Omen 17t - Best Value 17" Gaming Laptop ? 

After doing a lot of research including hitting up tech RU-vid channels including your review, I ended up buying the HP Omen 17-CB0080NR. I have had it for a few weeks now and I have to say, I am impressed. It is not only fast and capable of some of the smoothest graphics I have seen on a laptop. The upgrade capability is immense and easy. Thank you for this video, It was very helpful in my decision making process!!!

I will always have a soft spot for HP laptops. Because I had a HP pavilion dv6809WM throughout college and it was one of the most reliable machines I've ever had. and then my dorm mate had a custom HP hdx18 with an AMD phenom X6 processor and an Nvidia GeForce 180M in it. not to mention the stylish designs of both machines, especially the chrome and silver of the HDX model, is beautiful to me even to this day.

As of 2021, HP's Command Center software does allow for special effects (i.e. customization) on your RGB keyboard such as flashing and wavy lighting, etc.

Got one, a fairly high spec version. For a screaming deal with the company discount. Love it.

After originally getting the 15" version fully loaded with the RTX 2080 Max-Q and i9 CPU, I was a little disappointed that my temps seemed to hit 99°C in benchmarks even with an undervolt, yet HP assured me this was normal/not defective. However, I just got the 17" with the same specs (albeit full Max-P 2080 now, so moar power!) And man it's sooo much better. Temps barely hit 90°C in the same benchmarks WITHOUT an undervolt, and WITH an undervolt they barely even hit 80°C - huge difference. On top of that, performance is roughly 20-30% faster overall (most of that increase is in the GPU but the CPU also saw a jump due to the lower temps and therefore no thermal throttling). On the 15" my highest Timespy bench scores with a CPU undervolt and GPU overclock were around 7,800, but on the 17" I'm getting over 10,000. In Firestrike, it's 17,000 vs 20,500. If anyone's on the fence about which one to get, I've had both and I strongly recommend the 17"! The only down side is that it is of course a bit bulkier, but it's actually still one of the most slim and light non-Max-Q full 2080 laptops you can get, while also being the cheapest, as far as I've seen. Overall, very pleased with the 17".

Great review, I just ordered my omen 17 with 2070 after watching this. I was hesitant as it a lot cheaper than the competition. Hp have an offer for years warranty for free and a 5% discount....it was a steal at £1614

I got one of these a few days ago, love it, performs flawlessly so far. I don’t care about looks all that much or size and it’s basically a desktop for me. Very nice to type on and great for games 17” is worth it! Glad I got this over the others I was looking at.

The Omen 17" have a very good cooling sistem in my opinion. Can keep the temperatures pretty low and to my surprise the coolers are quiet on the max fan.

knowing nothing about laptops ive had a week of my eyes bulging bad as staring at screen after screen without really getting anywhere, my choice had come down to the Medion Erazer Defender P10 Core i7 16GB 512GB SSD RTX but as its so hard to find a review in english i was unsure, yes this is £150 more but you spoke very positively about this omen i'm going to get one Monday...unless i'm told the Medion is better that is lol......all the fact and numbers went over my head but it was easy to read between the lines so well done and great review.....

Considering purchasing the Omen 17t with the 2080 and i9 considering the ridiculous deals right now. Think this video sold me on it. Most common complaint I have heard with the Omens is the heat on the CPU, but I think through a thorough undervolting that can be resolved. Repaste always too if needed..maybe liquid metal..hmmm.. And with an i9 even undervolted I imagine it will perform pretty well.

Now I really want a privacy shutter for the webcam. But I still prefer the 1660ti or 2060 and I love the hybrid graphics switching for better battery life. They should put 2 m 2 slots in all laptop's. HP has the space.

I bought the 2070 model recently on sale. For the price I can easily overlook the backlight bleed

I can’t find a better deal for the performance anywhere else. I’m not a big fan of how it looks but I’m pretty sure this be the one I go with. It has much more than everything I need for a way better price than everyone else.

I really like your reviews. What clock rates are achieavalbe after undervolitn the CPU and overlcoking the GPU is one of the most important factors and no other reviewer covers this.

Have one question (perhaps, you've been already asked the same, but still...) - can't really choose between Lenovo Y740-17 inch with RTX 2070 Max-Q and HP Omen 17 with RTX 2080. To mention, the difference in FPS between two these GPUs is not an issue. In that particular case build quality, design, screen, temps and fan noise are more important for me. What would you recommend, if you'd have been purchasing one of these two? (Also pls can you tell, Omen seems rather thicker than Lenovo - is it real or just video mind games in my head?) Again, big thanks for your reviews.

I ordered the 17inch version and it only gives the option for 40hz and 60hz. The 144hz is a false advertisement, and now im stuck with this laptop for the next few years when I specifically searched for a laptop with 144hz

Hi Steve, great video and awesome channel. Steve I have few questions as I have dilemma as to what to chose since I'm new to gaming laptops but I need one. For me look/ keybord layout or screen size is not important. (I would tend to get 17'' but i will take easily 15"). Budget is up to 2200USD if it is worth it, but I would rather spend around 1800USD. I was considering the Y740 with 2080mq/144mhz/gsync/300nits -My concerns are: Slow screen response time as to compared to 3ms from asus for example also low brigtnes? 1750USD Or the Y540 with 2070mq/144mhz/gsync/500nits/HDR - concerns are same as above, brightness is no more issue. 1550USD Or the Scar 3 G531GW-DB76 with 2070/240mhz/ NO-Gsync/ concerns no gsync. 1900usd Scar 2 same as above but 144hz display and NO GSYNC. MSI ge75 ? Im clueless... I have saved quiet a lot to get this so I dont want to regreat for example having no GSYNC but at the same time will I see ghosting on the Y740 or the Y540. Or if I grab the scar Will i be missing on the GSYNC. DO you think thunderbolt is a must these days. Just to note that I want to play BF5 on ultra high so FPS is concern. What do you think Steve? What would be your choice if you have this money and what is other alternative if you have one? Thank you

The Mech 17 is on sale for 12.12 and it is at the same price as Omen 17. Would you still suggest Omen over Mech?

I decided to go for this model since in the UK everything else is ridiculously overpriced, will update when I receive it and test it in everyday use.

I got this with the 2070 RTX, and I have no complaints on the performance. I have not tested any power hungry games yet, but the fan noise got very loud when I started installing them. It's almost like it knows what is coming... I have to spend some time figuring out if the fan noise will become a problem. When playing Heroes of the Storm, running at about 150-200 fps with everying on max, I got complaints from a friend that the mic picked up a lot of noise from the fans.

Hi @OWNorDisown., Ive been watching watching a lot of your video's last night and you mentioned a few times how fan you of the MSI GE66 Raider. Would you recommend this laptop over the Raider? Recently i've bought the MSI GE66 Raider 10SE-677NL, and to be quite honest, i was pretty shocked by the sound and mic quality. Its nearly impossible to communicate without headset, and after a while nihamic/realtek caused the voicechat to reduce by a lot. Since i used to have a 17 inch Omen laptop before the raider i've been concidering to go back to that size since i'm used to the width and numbpad. My biggest candidates are the HP Omen 17-cb1981nd and Lenovo Legion 5 17IMH05H. Could you please help me with a recommendation? i've been stressing for a few days since i have only a limited time to retour the laptop if i'm deciding to replace the 15inch Raider.

Hi Steve ,nice review and I am thinking of getting the new Omen 15 ,I don’t game but just for 3D modeling and animation.Rendering will be done on as well. I think I will go for the 4K but if you say the 2070 is just 7% faster than the 2060 ,does it make sense to get the 2060 instead and what price range will you consider as a great buy . Found the oled rtx2060 ,32gb ram and 1tb ssd for 1900 on Amazon .Thank you

Good temps here. I like this Omen. :) Same temps like Strix G... but I thought the price is higher :D. What about the screen? I saw your device has some backlight bleeding... but the quality? Is better than Strix? Thanks for the review. This Omen model has not yet appeared in Romania... but I saw it in Germany for a good price, but more expensive than a Strix G with 150 euros - made especially for Germany - I did not know that the market differs very much - some models are made for Eastern Europe (a poorer quality ), and others come especially for western Europe. Many will not recognize, but this is the truth. That is why many are surprised why we have cheaper devices here than in the west. :D

Got the I9 version with the 2080 for 1816 lol quite the deal, three year warranty and a 100 dollars back. So total is at 1950. Pretty good lol.

I'm entirely amazed at the thermal solution offers by HP OMEN, really really good!! Unlike the DELL G7 2070 SUPER model that I have now, It's hot like microwaving foods after 20 mins in highly demanding games. 97 C most of the time, sometimes 100 C, Jesus.

I've been waiting for a comparison between New Acer Helios 300 and Omen 17t and Alienware m17 R2. None of these is avaliable on RU-vid now

I was investigating this laptop a few months ago before all the reviews and my conclusion was this is a very good laptop for its price, probably the best. After a few months i can say i did the right choice. This is a really good product. Very recommended. Just make sure you buy the new model with the new cooling system

I would greatly appreciate help with choosing between these 2 (omen is 280€ cheaper): MSI GE75 9SG : i7 9750H - RTX 2080 - 1To SSD - 16gb RAM HP Omen 17" : i7 9750H - RTX 2080 - 512gb SSD - 8gb RAM (will upgrade to 16) My only criteria is perfomance over time/cooling. I will use an external monitor with Gsync and 144hz with it. Which one is better built / gives more performance ? Thank you

I love the laptop, but the app Omen Command Center sucks. OCC is buggy. It works then it doesn't work. And it is constantly notifying me on every boot-up that a part of it needs to be installed that already is installed. You would think HP would fix the bugs, but NO.

First of all: Thank you for your review of this model! But a big THANK YOU for putting your focus on NOT max fans!! I hate most youtubers celebrating these max fan options! Just bought the Omen 17 2070 one week ago, because of its thicker chassis and thick, large cooling fans. Unfortunately i will return it, because only reason to buy such a chunky machine was my hope for quieter fans. :-( Therfore I undervolted & downclocked the 2070 quite a bit, resulting in amazing 85-90W (instead of 115W) with just minimal performance loss! The results? Well, GPU Temps stay extremely low (53-55°C in Unigine Valley!), but fans spin at almost max speed! Seemingly your 17t has a different fan control, because mine speeds up to almost the same noise level, as it would by manually enable max fans That is so ridiculous and disappointing at the same time! :-( The Omen 17 has the potential for a quiet AND powerful machine, but HP's horrible fan control ruins it! And of course no user configurable fan control available! Wish they just would add these simple fan speed sliders from acer's predator sense software... So my search for a quiet powerful laptop goes into next round. That's such a shame, as the Omen 17's cooling system would meet my needs perfectly, but HP's fan control makes me return the device. Thanks for nothing, HP! :-(

Hey, love the channel. New Sub from me. I have a question. I am in the market for a new gaming laptop, with the caveat being that I want a quiet (relatively speaking) laptop. I'm hoping to pay around the price of a helios 300 with the same specs/performance but I know the helios gets very loud. What is your recommendation that fits there? Battery life, weight, etc aren't a consideration. Only performance and noise. I am willing to manually undervolt and OC as well as needed. Thanks!

Thanks for the detailed review. I just got the new 2020 model 17-cb1070nr with RTX 2060. The CPU reaches 100°C with MAX fan and throttles the CPU during Cinebench and gaming. Can it be resolved by undervolting or should I replace it with another laptop. Since I shipped it from US to Kuwait it would take a month to return and get another one.

This thing can easily handle 2070. Maybe 2080 too
