#Toyota has one of the most extensive truck lineups in America. One offering that has remained refreshingly simple over the years is the #Toyota4Runner. Last fully redesigned in 2010, the fifth generation is nearly a decade old and feels like it from behind the wheel. From its bumpy ride quality, slow and vague steering, snug interior, and poor fuel economy, you'd think it would send buyers running away but instead, they are running towards the #4Runner with over 150,000 units sold in 2018.

You explained it well, the 4runner is no "poser". Don't look for luxury features, it's a durable, reliable and very capable offroad truck.

The are three reasons people love the 4 Runner. Old school. Less electronics to fail. Rugged. Built to last. And many do off-roading in this pulling trail bikes,small boats and overland campers. I have a Tundra TRD Pro. Love it. My daughter has a 4 Runner V-8 ,old yes. No issues like a Ford or Ram. It just runs.(nearing 175 K). If it works,simple stated. Do not screw it up..

@@mtalha909 Well, it's a good thing Toyota is one of the most innovative automakers, right? They do innovation right. First to use reliable VVT. First to use reliable direct injection. And they were even first to use dual injection with the GS450h. The innovation happens more on the Lexus side while the Toyotas use well proven tech. As it should be. And, no, even the other Japanese manufacturers are not manufactured nor tested as well as Toyotas. The standard gap is large.
@huythai1222
@huythai1222 5 лет назад
M_U_M_M_Y 60k Miles is “durable” standards of the 80s. The 4-runner doesn’t signify that Toyota doesn’t innovate. Say the 2008 Lexus LS, it’s the first car with 8 speed transmission, LED headlights, autonomous parking and lane tracing. And the Toyota Alphard, one of the most luxurious vans on the market. Other cars like the Majesta and Crown overseas, are considered pinnacles of engineering for the value that those cars are. Here in the states, the Land Cruiser is not only one of the most durable and capable trucks out there, it is also one of the most luxurious imo compared to the Nissan Armada, or the likes of it. The Avalon and Camry are also good examples of Toyota innovation and prowess. Lastly, although I do agree Toyota’s SUV lineup is super dated, they are already reaching the end of their generation therefore we should be expecting new models this year or the next. People don’t realize how much effort and technology it takes to build a car that runs for hundreds of miles instead of cars that are meant to be traded in once the warranty is done, and no one wants to pay for an exorbitant amount of their money and piece of mind on something that they depend on everyday.
@MrCarGuy
@MrCarGuy 5 лет назад
@@mtalha909 Did you seriously just compare a Nissan Rogue to a 4runner? Ridiculous. I'm sorry you think a 4runner is $50k as well, as you can get a 4WD SR5 for $36k easy. The TRD Pro model is an off-roading variant. If you like the superficial and easily changed things, like the head unit and LED lighting, then that is your loss.

M_U_M_M_Y I'm in my late teens and I don't give a rats ass about Technology, I saved up $6000 during my summer and school job and ended up buying a 160k+ mile 2004 Toyota Solara with ZERO problems for 2000. It's basic but it will last. It's given me zero problems, no check engine lights, no slouching, absolutely nothing despite the miles. That's a good car, a car that will last. Also to mention the Solara is very luxurious considering the year, heated leather seats, powerseats its the full package and I didn't even have to spend that much on it.

I really don’t understand why reviewers constantly complain about “hard plastics” on areas that never get touched in trucks/suvs. It’s not a luxury car, it is meant to be utilitarian and durable. I would rather them leave it the way it is than “upgrade” it and raise the price even more. People keep asking for more and more features and then they are shocked when they see the price tag. Don’t change a thing Toyota, the 4Runner is perfect the way it is. I know if it gets any changes, it will get the 3.5 v6 and that would be a downgrade in my opinion.

@modmatt1
@modmatt1 5 лет назад
Hard touch plastic dash pieces are more prone to rattle, so I think that is mostly why reviews point it out. Totally agree with the 3.5L V6 being a downgrade especially if Toyota also brings over the 6 speed trans with it. Not been a good transition to say the least. At least there is a manual option to get around some of the issues on the Engine/Transmissions in the new Tacomas.

The power lift gate sensor doesn’t work once you get it dirty and this is an off-road specific built truck. They used softtex because it’s easily cleaned when it gets dirty which will happen when used for 4 wheeling. They didn’t use soft touch crap because it doesn’t last the test of time and the 4Runner and Landcruisers are built to last decades and people keep them well past 10 yrs. All of us 4Runner people have repeatedly voiced that we DO NOT want Toyota to turn it into a unibody minivan posing as an SUV with AWD junk. Improving the on-road manners will take away from its off-road and deep snow capabilities.

I'm thinking about looking into the new 4runner because I like the overall look of it and I'm really tall(6' 9 "). I wouldn't get a power lift gate if it was available. I tend to keep my vehicles forever and I try to stay away from options that I don't really need and that will just end up costing a lot of money if/when they break years after the warranty period. Also I'd never use this for off road driving but again I like the overall look of it and I'm really tall so not a lot of options.

Absolutely. Toyota has been extremely careful with what they do on their land cruiser and 4runner line. They only trickle down tech that has been proven to be bulletproof. I wouldn't be surprised to see LED lights all around next refresh as well as the Tacoma's new V6 and tranny, but that's about it.
@markc1016
@markc1016 4 года назад
@@sephiros9883 I get it. But the 3.5 they put in the Tacoma would be an even worse match for the heavier 4RNR. I traded a 2020 Tacoma for a 2020 4RNR and am so glad I did. The motor and trans(4.0-5speed) is so much better to drive and live with. The seating position is much better as well. I could never get comfortable in the 2020 taco even with its new power seats. There were some things I liked about the Taco better. Like it was much quieter. Had more hidden storage under seats, etc. But for day to day driving, the 4RNR for "Me" is light years ahead.

Wish list for 6th gen (in no particular order): - Body on frame - 3.5L V6 with 6 speed transmission - Ditch halogen lights all around for HID/LED - Auto tailgate - Lose weight/Aluminum roof and hood - Larger wheel wells for bigger aftermarket tires - TSS+ - Push button start/intelligent entry across the lineup - Apple/android CarPlay - 360 camera option - Redesigned front end/say no to fish gills

fender You are right. However, Toyota updated the transmission tuning to fix the gear hunting. It was previously programmed for maximum fuel efficiency. Still, you are totally right. I mainly put that on the list because I already know that is what Toyota is going to use to improve mpg and save on production costs (same as Tacoma). I’m not a fan of 8 speeds because in my experience that actually causes more gear hunting and reliability issues. Also, I own a 2016 4Runner and it really needs the 6th gear on the highway, especially considering I get 14 mpg. One of my favorite engine/transmission combos was our Honda 3.5L V6 with a 6 speed and cylinder deactivation (embarrassing minivan 😕). 20+ mpg all day long with good power. I am a huge Toyota fan because they don’t chase stats as much as reliability. I firmly believe that a 6 speed will be more reliable than an 8 speed. How many Jeeps had their 9 speeds crap out with less than 10k miles? No thanks. I agree with you though, Toyota needs to make a bomb proof transmission for their trucks. I love the 6 speed in the Tundra, but the V8 sure helps!
@Libertarian_Neighbor

fender I have a LE. Full time “4wd” via a Torsen center diff instead of 2wd with part time 4wd. That’s why the LE comes with the skinniest tires possible, to try to stay close to the EPA rating of the other trims. Once I swapped those “skis” out for 275/70 BFG KO2’s, my MPG tanked. I was getting 16.5 combined with the stock tires and my wife was getting 18.0. Now tbh I’m about 14.5.

Lifestyle Overland, Wonderlost Overland, SwellRunner, Fotornr, Expedition Overland... I can go on and on with all the RU-vid and IG 4Runner off-road dedicated to 4Runners doing what 4Runners are meant to do. Way more people venture out in the wilderness in 4Runners than you think. When you’re out in a campsite with all your doors open and you spot a dangerous animal nearby, you’re not going to wait for your slow moving power tailgate to shut while you’re seeking to take cover. We also like having quick access to our gear and love quickly locking up our gear and keep them safe. When you’re walking along a creek and you slip and fall in with your smart key in your pocket, go try to start your vehicle in the middle of the rubicon trail. Those luxuries turn into hinderances. But at the next Overland Bound meeting, I’ll be sure to ask how many of us 4x4 people want a fancy motorized tailgate. I’m pretty sure I know what the answer will be. Keep the 4Runner honest and buy a highlander if you want a power lift gate, car like handling and day to day ease of drivability.

Usually love your thorough reviews but please review cars from the perspective of the audience and potential customers. The pro was made for a specific niche market of hardcore outdoorsman who will be doing heavy offroading and should be reviewed as such. We're not looking for an audi Q5 and don't care for luxury features that spike the price. We want durable, easy to clean, steering wheel feedback and toyotas awd technology which you didn't even review or test which defeats the whole point of reviewing the TRD pro trim. It's like reviewing a Ferrari and then reviewing the same Ferrari under a special trim where they reduce weight by getting rid of power seats and soft touch plastic and you reviewing it as if needs those features at a certain price point.. When that specific Ferrari trim was made for track use... Hope you understand my feedback.

This truck is really cool but its too expensive for the lack of tech. I get the appeal of the simplicity but the lack of tech at this price is unacceptable. The base model should start at around 28k and have it max out at around 45k. A boost in fuel economy would be great too

You actually do get some tech/features on truck, it's just that it's in the form of hardware. A comparable $50k explorer may have some tech features (e.g. surround view cameria, self-park) but will lack the off-road hardware that the 4runner offers.

@Roaming50

Driving a 2019 I agree another gear of two would be nice but I’m not sure about an 8-speed. My wife has a 9-speed Pilot and in mountains it is fine going uphill but downhill I can’t rely on it for engine breaking. It’s gear hunting any always seemingly in the wrong gear when I want to manually shift the gears to control speed. It’s horrible. The 5-speed in the 4R doesn’t suffer this. I’d like a 6th for better highway efficiency and perhaps some closer spacing of ratios but not much more.

@@Roaming50 The 9 speed in the Pilot is notorious for bad shifting. I love the new Passport, but I'll wait until it gets the 10 speed auto transmission. I avoid Honda 9 speed at all cost. It's just bad.

That running board doesn't come on the PRO -- looks like someone switched out the standard rock rail with removable steps. The Blackout or Predator package comes only on the PRO and includes the rock rail w/ removable steps, black wheels and front and rear Toyota emblems are also black for a price of about $3,500. This vehicle also doesn't have the emblems blacked out on the back. Visually, there's a huge difference. The TRD is closer to $40K and has everything the PRO has except the blackout package, the roof rack, a more sophisticated suspension system.

I believe the 2020 Tacoma is coming with LED headlights and Android Auto so the 4Runner should follow suit in 2020. @@brodiwheeler7583 Exactly! Full time 4wd; full leather interior; X-REAS suspension; etc. Here in WI the 4Runner is very popular, however, consumers tend to use them no differently than a Highlande. Very few use the Pro models to their potential. On-road manners, comfort and luxury will trump the off-road cred for most drivers. Ultimately, if someone wants to take his 4Runner to a camping/fishing destination where the pavement ends, the Limited model tackle 99% of the trails here in WI. Otherwise, consider opting for the TRD Off-Road w/ the KDSS (standard non-premium trim w/ cloth interior). Super value and soooooooo much less expensive.

Recently encountered a new 4Runner in a hotel parking lot with a "disabled driver" plate. Struck me as odd and I asked the elderly fellow who owned it why he bought it and how he liked it. In typical Toyota owner fashion he replied that he traded his 20+ year old 4Runner that never, ever gave him any trouble for the new one. He said his wife also drives it (She's the one who rates the "disabled" plate) and she liked some of the "new" features. Personally I'm not a big Toyota fan (though I respect the fact that they know their customer base) and the 4Runner lacks features I like on a vehicle and has some true SUV features I don't need. But it does have one feature I've always wished I had on the vehicle I transport my big dog in. The roll down rear window is fantastic for that purpose and I don't know why no other manufacturer offers it. Anyhow, it's definitely dated and "old school." But I wonder whether a thorough update to match more modern vehicles would improve its sales numbers very much. The fellow I met certainly doesn't care about what the new 4Runner lacks and I suspect many looking seriously at the 4Runner agree with him. In any event, it's worth noting that in 2018 sold nearly 140,000 4Runners in the US. And that's more than they've sold in any year dating back to 1994! Gotta be doin' something right.

Toyota is smart to not mess with the typical 4Runner formula. Great for offroading, classic and simple interior, but the main thing is the build quality and reliability.
