Great tutorial, man. Didn’t even bother with printing instructions. Some of the rivets were a bear to get on but you saved all of us a bunch of money. Wish I could get the gapping a tiny bit better but can’t complain with DIY’ing Thanks.

Your careful and thorough discussion of each step was fantastic. It’s amazing that your video far and away is better than any OEM help I have come across for any installation task. If you’re not, you should be an instructor/teacher. Kudos to you! I agree with others that you should post an OEM trailer hitch installation so the rest of us can follow your lead and tackle this project as well. Thank you.

Great video! Installed these running boards on my wife's Highlander today while the weather was somewhat warm. Everything was mostly smooth. The rivnuts are a bit of a pain. I bought a similar tool from HF. Gets the job done. I did see another method that involves a standard M6 bolt and nut with a couple wrenches to set the rivnuts. Might be easier to get leverage in tighter spaces and save a few bucks on a tool that'll most likely be used once.

I actually used an 11" rivnut tool similar to this however I've heard others have used a 14" tool without jacking the car up but you'll have less clearance to work with for the rivnuts located near the door jams. The shorter tool definitely gives you a better angle however it may require more arm strength to crimp due to the shorter handles. Good luck! Unfortunately not, the rivnuts are the only way the running boards are primarily anchored and supported to the frame of the car in order to handle the weight when someone steps on it once the bolts are threaded on. If you don't want to buy a rivnut insert tool, maybe try seeing if you can rent one from a hardware store or a tool library if you have those in your community.

@@vietbubbletea With the running board installed. Will you still be able to jack up the car using the scissor jack that comes with the car?
@vietbubbletea
@vietbubbletea 2 года назад
@wlit Yes, the bottom of the running board has two cut outs in the plastic molding that gives you access to the front and back pinch weld points where you would normally put jack stands or in case of emergency use, the scissor jack. This also gives plenty of clearance if you take your car for servicing and they use a car lift. If you watch my Michelin CC2 video showing my visit to Costco, you'll see how they lifted my car with the running boards with no damage to my undercarriage.

I don't have much experience with the bull or rear bumper guards but I've seen ebay sellers mention in their product description that it may interfere with the bumper sensors so buy at your own risk if you want to risk messing up the pre-collision detection, dynamic radar cruise or lane departure alert. About the 3M Sealant - the menu said to have 2 inches of clearance around the hole. But when you put the new sealant on, is it still having 2 inches of clearance? Is the hole next to the existing sealant for Rivnut Nut? Do you foresee any problem with "not" removing the existing sealant to install the running board? (like doesn't lay flat to the frame of the car) Thank you!
@vietbubbletea
@vietbubbletea 2 года назад
@wlit I'm not sure myself as the 2 inches clearance can be interpreted a few ways. The existing glob of sealant I removed prior to adding a thinner layer was thick and hard so I imagine that if not removed, could cause clearance issues for the running boards to sit flush against the sheet metal. You could test fit and skip this step to see if you have issues and report back your experience! You will need to install rivnuts in the two holes next to this area (side & bottom) as mentioned in the installation instructions. I hope that helps!

I'm going to remove my factory installed running boards on my new 2021 HL and need to buy the black covers that replace them. How many of the holes that originally were attachment points for the black covers get used for the running boards? I think the only problematic places would be if a Rivnut were placed in a mounting hole used for the black cover because trying to drill the Rivnut out and getting all the pieces out of the frame rail box could be difficult. Any other thoughts or suggestions on this project? Thanks.
@vietbubbletea
@vietbubbletea 2 года назад
Oh man, I'm not sure how securely the plastic cladding would stay on the vehicle at higher speeds since 6 out of the 7 holes where the black covers go would have rivnuts crimped into place leaving only one hole to secure the cladding thats located in between the front and rear doors. You would also need to find the white plastic retainer where the wakai nut goes if you intend to replace it. Theres also 6 larger holes on the bottom where two are currently occupied by flag bolts which can be removed before reinstalling the 6 plastic grommets from the original cladding. Can it be done? I believe so... but my honest opinion is it's probably more work just to risk possible plastic flapping while going 60mph. Good luck!
@jimwiseman8053

@@vietbubbletea I was afraid that most of the holes with Rivnuts were needed for the new cladding. That's a lot of hoping you could get the remnants of that many Rivnuts out. Thanks for the reply.
@vietbubbletea
@vietbubbletea 2 года назад
@@jimwiseman8053 After double checking the holes, there's actually 8 holes with 6 being filled by the rivnuts. This would give you the option to put in two plastic clips where the door jams are located at the front and middle of the car with a screw that would secure the cladding at the rear. I definitely would not recommend removing the rivnuts as the sheet metal is pretty thin but a short term fix could be to run a long strip of 3M double sided tape the length of the cladding to help secure the cladding to the metal.
@jimwiseman8053
@jimwiseman8053 2 года назад
@@vietbubbletea thanks for looking into that for me. I think your idea of double- sided tape might work especially since there would be other OEM fasteners in there, too. Does it look like it might be possible to sand down or otherwise reduce the size of whatever pushes into the slots so they would push into the Rivnuts?
@vietbubbletea
@vietbubbletea 2 года назад
@@jimwiseman8053 I don't think sanding would be necessary if you take out the 6 white plastic clips from the cladding where the rivnuts currently exists and use only 2 of them. Those clips actually take up minimal space in between the cladding and metal so once removed, the double sided tape can be used to fill in that space as I would leverage those 6 contact points to secure the double sided tape over the existing rivnuts. If you go to the 4:40 mark in my video, you'll see the access points I'm referring to where the white retainers are. Hopefully that makes sense.
