Ford's 2020 Super Duty isn't a reinvention of their heavy-duty truck and that's fine by me. Instead of a ground-up change Ford gives us new engines, transmissions, new towing tech and some absolutely insane payload and towing figures. Need to move a small building? There's a Ford for that with up to 37,000 pounds of towing ability.

The trailer brake controller is "standard" as part of the trailer towing package. Every time you say "should be standard" means the base price of the vehicle goes up and then you have a whole lot of people complaining about "costing too much."

Very well done. This review, like many others, was very informative. My pick for what would be my fourth heavy duty pickup would hands down be the super duty. Ram is lagging behind with the power output and the extremely annoying two versions of the cummins. GMC is just way extra, and the tailgate seems to me like a hassle. Chevy is just FUGLY. And i will have to agree with you alex when you talk about the silly backup assist on the ford. Thats the one feature they could’ve left off. Overall, just my opinion, but ford is just the best all around heavy duty pickup package.

I agree this is a very good review. It really helped to have someone knowledgeable explain the different items on the truck. Most salespeople do not know or understand the details. Very interesting to watch and to see the test track operated by Ford. I currently own a Dodge 2500 4x4 and it rides like a heavy truck, which my wife hates. I have yet to drive the gas powered Ford since nobody within 700 miles of me has one; they only have diesels which I don't want.

Excellent job, Alex ! Love your reviews. I watch most of it even tho I have no intention of buying a NEW vehicle any time soon . . . but I like to stay up to the latest on the auto and truck worlds. I'm one of those few weirdos that like the front end of the 3/4 and 1 Ton Silverados. Looks very truckish and industrial. But overall I like them all aesthetically. Used to drive an F-350 dually crew cab at work, I love that 6.7L Diesel V8 but makes for a VERY nose heavy truck, In high speed long sweepers you could feel how that mass wants to keep going straight instead of going with the curve.

I have been a cummins guy for years. As I’m looking at these, I will probably move towards a Ford because the rams don’t offer the higher power numbers comparable to the fords in a 3/4 ton. Great review Alex!
@highjix
@highjix 4 года назад
Then main reason I wouldn't go with a cummins wouldn't be because of it's power levels, I doubt I would even get near the upper threshold of what that engine is capable of, my problem is that it's wrapped up in a Ram truck and longevity on Ram trucks has always left me a bit cold. I admit I have never owned a Ram truck, but when I look at the older ones in my area they all seem a bit beat up. I know it could be the owners fault, but when you see it over and over and over again, you start wondering is it the owner or the vehicle it's self. that said, I would buy a Ram before a GM because of past personal experience I had when I owned a Corvette that has completely soured my opinion of GM and their customer service.
@Harry-zz2oh
@Harry-zz2oh 3 года назад
@@highjix I own a Dodge 2500 4x4 with the 6.7 Cummins diesel. I bought the truck new in 2008 and have maintained it but the maintenance is getting to be a real pain. The Cummins has a great deal of power especially when in the mountains (CO, NM, AZ, MT, etc.) or when hauling a heavy load (>3500#) or towing a trailer. When doing both it still does well but the ride is not nearly as nice as a newer truck.

@@Harry-zz2oh Maybe you misunderstood my reply, or maybe I didn't make myself understood properly. @@highjix I don't disagree with you on the build quality. I have only looked at the lower grade of the new Ram but it isn't anything special. But Ford has some of the same issues. If we could combine elements from each manufacturer, then we might have a decent truck. Time will tell.

You do NOT need a commercial drivers license for trailers over 10k or a GVCW over 26001 if the vehicle is not a commercial vehicle, or used for commercial uses. People have straight up tractor trailers with race trailers, and they don't need a CDL or DOT numbers. That said, it seems more often than not that small business owners will tow 10k+ trailers on their pickup trucks without the CDL, completely oblivious to the law.

A few corrections: 1) The front grill is ONLY different on the 2020 F450 as Ford wanted increased air flow on that model. The 2020 F250 & F250 will have the same new style front grill. 2) The 2020 F250 & F250 SHORT BOX now all have a 3 INCH receiver upgraded from the 2 1/2 inch receiver that came on the short box 2019 F250 or F350. The 2019 F350 LONG BOX came with a 3 INCH receiver. Important to noter that the 3 INCH receivers have larger hole opening for the chain hooks which were problematic on the 2019 2019 F250 or F350 short box trucks as most people had to add a 3/4 shackle to accept their chain hooks
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 4 года назад
They do not all have 3 inch receivers, I know because I have 2.5 inch hitches and they fit perfectly. According to ford, cooling capacity was increased on all grilles regardless of appearance.

@kevinlauzon7665 4 года назад
@@AAutoBuyersGuide , I can only speak from my experience. I get a new F350 Platinum short box every 6 months & have been doing so since May 2018. Until I got the new 2020 F350 two weeks ago, all my trucks came with 2 1/2 inch receivers with small chain hook holes. My son also gets a new F350 Platinum every six months but het gets long box trucks. All of my son's long box trucks have come with 3 inch receivers with bigger chain hook holes since April 2018. I have always been envious of the bigger chain hook holes on my sons truck. The 3 inch receiver doesn't bother me either way other than I now need to use reducing sleeve from 3 to 2 1/2 but I will do so anytime if I get the larger chain hook holes. With respect to the differing grill design, I was merely repeating what one of the Ford fellas in charge of of development who was riding along in with the Big Truck Big RV guy on his review of the white F450 while pulling the 30,000 lbs gooseneck trailer. I will see if I can find the link to his You Tube video. The bIg Truck Big RV mentions it at the 14 second mark of this video but to clarify, unless I misunderstood, the differing grill seems to apply only to dual rear wheel trucks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8OKb5H8_zU8.html

Before I even get into which truck I buy, if it was a Class 2B (3/4 ton) it would be a gasser and if a Class 3 (1 ton) it would be a diesel. My reasoning behind this either I can get away with the capabilities of the gas engine in a 3/4 ton and not have the 10k investment into a diesel that will cost more to maintain, or I am pushing the SRW trucks to their limit and need the 1 ton diesel grunt. I wouldn't want to be the guy with a 3/4 ton with 18k gooseneck and loading the truck like right up to its payload limit of around 3k. Just me as the driver would legally max out the truck and anything like tools would just be overloading the truck. But if I am towing a 14k trailer with that 3/4 ton then I would only have about 2.1k pin weight and have a good 900lbs of payload to spare for occupants, gear and tools, and that I can tow with a gasser. I would most definitely get a Sierra HD. The High Country Silverado looks nice but I can't stand the bold brown and black interior. The Sierra also offers the multipro tailgate in all trims of the 2500 and 3500, so you can get a base trim with it. I seem to be the only person on the planet who likes the GM interiors more than the Ram and Ford. I find ford's interior to be overly cheap when going beyond an XLT. There is just something about it that screams fleet vehicle, even in a limited. Ram took their 1500 interior and designed it for the limited, then scaled it down to make the tradesman. This is why the ram has such a nice interior and all the luxuries just seem to flow naturally. But I like the raw functionality of the GM interiors over the other two. I like the button locations, the HUD, the cameras, and I even like the plastics on non commonly touched areas to increase durability, since at the end of the day a pickup is a work tool, whether its a fleet vehicle on a construction site or towing a horse trailer off a ranch. And with that refreshed powerstroke, I am worried about its longevity with just how much torque they are pushing through it. The commercial version is still rated for 850ft-lbs, which is significantly less. The 7.3 on the other hand seems to be a much more serious contender. Just as usual ford is hunting those best in class numbers as you said .1% of trucks actually have. I think GM's max tow numbers (excluding the 3500 dually reg cab) are a lot more realistic to what people will actually buy whereas ford and ram both take major hits as you climb the ladder. Also the silverado being able to tow 35,500 in that max tow with over 100ft-lbs of torque different vs the 37,500 of the purpose built towing f450, and especially the f350 with 35,750. So we are really are limited by tires, bakes and suspension. The reason the f450 gets the towing it does is the wheels, tires and rear axle. Also I may be wrong but the ram 2500 with or without airbags should have coil rear suspension.

Thumbs up just for typing all of that. You make some good points too. 3/4 ton gas. 1 ton diesel.
@TheMCD1989
@TheMCD1989 4 года назад
I agree for the most part, and it seems like you put a lot of thought into that statement but I'll argue against the diesel 1 ton DRW. I am that odd person that has a huge 4 door flatbed 1 ton drw with the 6.2 gas. I farm full time and need the payload capacity of the DRW but didn't want the cost and complexity of the new diesels. I had an older (2005) Dodge Cummins before and my decision to go back to gas was weighed by a few things: there are no good diesel specific shops near where I live, not ones that want to work on light duty trucks. The cost of diesel fuel vs gas. Maintenance, such as fuel filters, oil changes and DEF. The immediate purchase cost of a diesel and finally a combination of living up north and doing a lot of short tripping, the diesel needs to be plugged in when it gets down below zero or needs to sit idling to get up to temp for twice as long as a gas truck and that kills the diesel mileage benefit, not to mention having to treat fuel in the winter. If I had a heated shop that I could put my truck in all winter I may have stayed with a diesel but I just don't love the complexity of the new trucks, even my 2005 a set of injectors is over $2000 for remans. Overall I'm happy with the gas one ton, I miss the diesel performance on the highway and the MPG towing. But 90% of my hay deliveries are on state highways 55mph and below and the new 6.2 + 6 speed auto performs just as well at those speeds as the old cummins. I'd say 80% of the time I don't need a diesel but need the heavy truck, and that other 20% of the time wasn't worth going to a newer diesel. I'd say I am more of the exception than the rule but just wanted to throw that out there, if I lived in my truck in the driver seat I'd go diesel but I don't. I am really excited about the 7.3 gas and 10 speed, it fits what I'm looking for exactly. But I'll let it get any issues ironed out for a few years first, so far I'm definitely happy with the 2019 6.2 F350 but I think the 7.3 and 10 speed should bridge the gas vs diesel performance gap better.

@@TheMCD1989 the fact that 3500s come in srw and drw is just a hot mess category wise. I was referring to srw truck in my comment sorry for the confusion. Yes a gasser dually would be the best for payload. Now idk if you "need every last pound" or if you could have swung the 7.3 (if you're truck is a 2020). And yes diesels are a pain in the ass but ford specifically builds powerstrokes to not be mechanic friendly, so you're forced to bring them to the dealer. This is another reason why I'd go GM or Ram, since I fix my own stuff

No. Only the 6.2 has flex-fuel capability at this time. I've been looking but the 7.3 doesn't show any flex. BTW: Some models/configurations of the 7.3 require the use of Premium fuel which can cost as much or more than diesel fuel.

Doesn't matter what you think, in most states the requirement is based on weight, and not vehicle type. The requirements are different in each state. In New Mexico, if the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer are over 26,000 lbs - you need a CDL.

@@jermainec2462 If it's over 26,001 GVWR between the truck and a trailer over 10,000lbs you need a class A. Some states have a class A non-CDL. Most are CDL. The 26,001+ part is federal law so your opinion is far less valid than his statement. An F450 with a 12K GVWR trailer doesn't require a CDL. An F450 (or F350 DRW since both are 14K GVWR) with a 12,001+ GVWR trailer will require a specific license, which will be defined by the state you live in. 98% percent (maybe more) people will never get their super duty off the highway, every little bit helps mpg. Definitely helps hot shot haulers and cattle haulers who are usually on the highway. If you don't like it just take it off, I took it off my 19 F350 as I'm mostly doing off highway work. It does look better without it, and ground clearance is one of the reasons I went with the Ford.
