@@norgepalm7315 This is 2020, not 1992. Hyundai has stepped up their game several times over since the '90s. Get with the times. I have a Kia (corporate cousin to Hyundai), and it's been damn good for 125,000 so far.
Argh. I've to say it again. Great video, great review. Genesis, Hyundai, Kia. Whether they are everybody's cup or tea or not is not the point. I think one thing that subtly comes across from your review is how a car company creates a roadmap and makes a successful go at it. Hyundai came out of left field and kept at it till they got things right enough for their customer base. They brought back Kia from dead. They tweaked the Genesis brand in a similar fashion till it had the foothold it needs and was tailored to the audience they believe will buy it. While I've never owned a Hyundai made car, I've driven thousands of miles on rental ones and I can say, they hit the spot. They did everything I wanted them to do when I had them. I've driven in a friend's previous generation Genesis. Not a car I'd consider buying. But I don't matter. It fits the box that it needs to fit for its buyers and tremendously satisfies those buyers. The price to value factor that Hyundai, Kia, Genesis offer is absolutely tops. I give 6 out of 5 stars to Hyundai (Kia & Genesis by extension).
The whole chauffeur-CEO interaction was incredible. From the "phone call" to the unexpected tractor in the road, I live for stuff like this. SG 4 lyfe! Shoutout to Burger Zone & creamcakes in the glovebox!
milli pekmez it really is. In this segment, in this class, with the competition it has, I would pay more to get those extra features. Like the massaging seats, like a refrigerator, like those 10 way adjustable jewelled reading lights, like the absolutely necessary stripper pole.
I like the styling. I don't know if it's the side profile and wheels or what, but somehow it reminds me of E65 BMW 7 series. It feels fresh but traditional at the same time, when compared to the competitors.
Love it or hate the looks, the fact that this car has presence is undeniable. Although I would say the design language is better executed on the new G80 The value is amazing. Prior version 2017s are selling for $35K now and you get the better reliability and long warranty compared to the Germans
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII www.thedrive.com/news/32314/porsche-and-genesis-are-consumer-reports-most-reliable-brands thenewswheel.com/genesis-tops-jd-power-2020-vehicle-dependability-study/ Don't spout BS, Genesis is one of the most reliable brands out there.
Something to mention in the “value proposition” argument, especially if buying outright, is a 10 year 100k warranty. Curious your thoughts on the new G80... Korean press had some videos on RU-vid.
@@ThePhazdOne "We're so reliable we don't need a good warranty" is a bit of a weird selling point. But to the broader point there really aren't known brands anymore. Every company has implemented so many new technologies in the beta phase that it's hard to know who will run into problems with what. Honda is historically known as the world's best engine builder, but recently they've had numerous engine reliability problems.
Hyundai / Kia have had quite a few issues on their lower end engines in the Optima, Sonata, Elantra in the late 2000s to early 2010s a lot of owners have had their engines replaced under warranty. The concerning part is once you have had that engine replaced once, will the new one also break down on you in less than 100k?
@@doctorferdinand1003 It's weak is what it is. Just like the Tundra fanboys that try to pretend it's abysmal ~18mpg hwy when competitors are getting 23-24mpg with just as much power is acceptable "because reliability!!!".
3:19 Because by the time the car is in production, that new cool digital instrument cluster was NOT READY yet. You can see the new G80 and GV80 they all have the new digital instrument cluster.
I love the direction that Genesis is headed.. Once they release the GV80 and GV70 they will really take off. The G70 is great the new G80 looks great I like the headlight side marker taillight direction they are headed. The 3.5TT should be 400 hp/tq and a clear step up over the 3.3TT as they phase that out. The 5.0 V8 is gone and so is the 2.0T in the base g70 getting replaced by a 2.5T.
Yep agreed a g70 coupe or their coupe concept with a 3.5TT rwd manual would be the move to make. They need to sell a ton of gv80s and GV70s to carry the brand so they can afford to make the cars we want.
I remember watching one of your early reviews maybe within the first dozen reviews and I commented that you were too stiff and robotic but had amazing production quality yet no comedic entertainment. Now you've absolutely nailed it in all of you videos from the last year. I hope your channel keeps growing. Wonderful job
I thought they had the best sound system of any luxury car I tested at the Auto Show this year in February. It blew me away! Nice luxury automobile from Genesis. I hope to see more bells and whistles engineered into their cars in the future at a great price. They know tech sells and they're doing a good job of that so far 👍!
Just to provide some anecdotal insight, I saw the Genesis lienup at the Chicago auto show and I gotta say, it was pretty crowded. I was surprised. The GV80 and G90 were getting a lot of attention, and they were actually pulling people away from nearby luxury brands. Talking and listening to some of the people around, the middle aged group was genuinely impressed with design and quality of these cars. Families were surrounding the GV80. Dads were gandering at the G80 and G70. Quite a few younger guys were crowded around the G70s too. The design and quality, once I saw it and felt it in person, was really surprising. Genesis is clearly doing something right here. I initially disliked the G90 styling but after seeing it in person, I was really surprised at how elegant and nice they looked. They've got good momentum. With a better dealer network and better customer service, they have so much potential. Just my 2 cents
Good v! One thing that a lot of people miss about this car is that it's not a rede. It's just a refresh. They did do much of anything to the interior. The exterior looks awesome to me. I'm excited to see what they'd do with a full redesign. Also, the depreciation argument is going to begin going away. Kelly Blue Book says the Telluride/Palisade depreciation is only a hair greater than the Honda Pilot. I think we're approaching a turning point for the Korean brands.
Andoniades exactly ! That’s the point ! While the German brands make great cars, Lexus and Genesis make great products as well ! Why follow the crowd ! Be unique !
If these are your editing skills, they are absolutely amazing.🤯 And for that reason and the fact that I love cars 🥰 I will be subscribing because I'm enjoying every video I click on. Cudos to you man👏🏾👏🏾
Honestly, no one will pull a Lexus at least in the foreseeable future. No one will build a whole new platform, with a whole new engine that will last forever, in a product that takes 7-8 years and 8 competing engineering teams to come up with that STILL won't turn profit in the 3-5 upcoming years. The overall risk, the time consumption, the economic battering (at first) that Toyota took with the whole project was something that only a company the size of Toyota or Coca-Cola could take and it was done at the time when companies were willing to take those sort of chances.
Kia-Hyundai has already proved themselves as a reliable automaker. I think both divisions were near if not at the top of reliability lists based on service data.
Mark. You are working too hard. That’s a lot of videos you have put up in just a few days. Chill the F out. Don’t burn yourself out. We will need you when we all start sneezing. You’re the cool hand across our fevered brow. Haven’t watch this video yet but I’m sure it’s gold.

Two things of note: 1) It's true that Genesis doesn't offer those "extra rear seat luxury options", but you won't be getting those on the other flagship sedans either unless you option them with the ultra-pricey add-ons and packages that take the vehicles well over $100K territory. Most of them in their base forms don't even come with the standard features of a Genesis G80 (i.e. adaptive cruise control), nevermind the 90. A huge advantage of the Genesis vehicles is that they have few option packages and are generally loaded out the factory- can't say the same about any of the German brands that nickel and dime stupid things like a heated steering wheel. 2) The depreciation of Genesis is wildly overstated. While they don't hold their values as well as Lexus (no luxury brand does), they're far better than the likes of any of the European brands and even Japanese brands such as Infiniti. People simply think they "depreciate more" than other brands because they don't realize that the MSRP of the vehicles was originally far cheaper than the competition to begin with. Know that both a G80 and Audi A6 from 3 years ago both selling for $22K now doesn't take into account that the G80 was around $42K originally while the Audi was over $60K (for a V6 trim- also standard on the base model G80) BEFORE options.
Another articulate and enlightening video of a luxury saloon. Viewing the video gave me a Proustian moment of my youth in those Cadillac days. Driving my '64 Cadillac was a joy as you soak up the wide open spaces, driving across this beautiful nation. It was before all these photo radar, DWI laws, seat belts tickets -and other revenue raising tickets - we have today. Lot less traffic back then. Agree that the best deal on the G90 , is to buy a 2-3 yrs old ones. Also, Kia is making some nice vehicles, too. The Telluride SUV is selling well. Kia and Hyundai does a good job on the interior, features and design. Toyota and Honda could learn something be looking how they do their interiors, appointments and features of their vehicle. They are more than four wheels and an engine. The Koreans are making some nice vehicles today compared to yesterday years.
I think for those of us entering the segment, the constant complaints you hear from people about repair costs is whats keeping me out of the bmw/mercedes/audi class of vehicles. The genesis is a reliable vehicle, like the lexus is. Not to the same extent, obviously, but this is the nicest car i can buy without fear of the car breaking down and costing me a small fortune. Yes leasing fixes the reliability problem, but you have to be on another level of wealthy to throw lease money away.
The resale value for these is actually getting better I actually work at a dealership where we sell Genesis and we won't buy them at auction because they're too expensive. They typically go for high $30k and after having to certify them, we would have to retail them for around $40-43k. So resale values are right on par with the rest of the competitors. And realistically all vehicles in this class depreciate horribly. It's this class of vehicle.
Doug Demuro and Savagegeese. I'm a car guy. Know how to properly heel and toe. I love your channel. The sarcasm. Thanks for helping me/us get through this! Also love your camera work!
I have to say Genesis has killed it with the new design of their sedans and especially their SUV the GV80 which IMO next to Land Rover's is the best looking SUV on the market.
As someone who appreciates more retro design cues as well as simplicity, reliability and ease of maintenance in vehicles that are solid and refined, I can't help but love this thing. I think it looks much better than a brand new BMW 7 Series. I even like the gauges, because they're clean and simple and have good contrast, unlike those shitty digital gauges most cars have these days.
I like simple cars too, which is why the Tacoma and 4Runner appeal to me. I currently drive a '19 Kia Optima S, which has more features than I use. Some new features I really love, such as side view, forward, and backup cameras, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. I really don't want to drive a car without those features ever again. Some things are nice to have and I would expect on an expensive car, such as heated/ventilated front and rear seats. Where cars start to impress me is in overall build quality, fit and finish, choice of materials. I expect power, quick throttle and brake responsiveness, and accurate steering with minimum dive or body roll. I also expect a quiet cabin. My Optima fails in several of those categories, but since I just paid it off, I'm willing to live with its imperfections while I save up for a better car, perhaps a Genesis.
Uh oh... 2021 g90 😆 Edit: although I personally like both center stacks 20/21. Everything genesis is very nice. I wud go get a g70 right now if the 3.3tt had a manual. And if i had the $$ of course ha!
So, I totally thought he said, "Shut the f*** up about the pho!" and I couldn't stop laughing! As an Asian-American, I gave that pass. I literally dropped to the floor doubled over from laughing. I'm still laughing replaying that in my head even though I misheard it.
Great review. I'd keep in mind that Genesis is still building up its brand; is is a Lexus/Infity in its infancy. Design-wise, I think it is very elegant and some areas are just plain beautiful -- but that's only my subjective opinion. Having said that, buyers these days are more persuade-able and easily put off by brands in general, including luxury brands, by stupid shit and unnecessary/frivolous options or the lack thereof. Two examples I can vouche for are clients of mine who switched from BMW and Audi to Genesis because they figured that the reliability of Genesis' products has not only "evened-out" with their former premium brand vehicles but on some cases surpassed them. Also, repair costs was an issue as both of my clients dealt with astronomical repair bills when out of warranty, especially for the A8. As a matter of fact, the client who currently owns a 2016 G8 already put a deposit on a 2021 GV80 and his wife wants the just released G80. I think once the G90 goes through a full transition instead of a refresh, it'll be more up to par with its premium brand vehicles it aims to compete.
This is probably the best review I’ve seen of this car. It’s an interesting vehicle, but I’m still not sure what market they’re going after especially in a segment where badges really matter. Bargain luxury with poor resale value just doesn’t make sense to me. Hopefully, the next generation will really deliver true luxury - never underestimate Hyundai, they’ll definitely keep improving and Genesis will probably become the next Lexus-like success story.
Kudos for them for trying something new. It will take a long time to get prestige but it is going to happen. Especially now when there seems to be more negative information about "top" German brands.
All of your videos have the tone of a romance movie ending with two old lovers sitting on a park bench embracing each other while the camera pans away off to the drifting feather that opened the movie.
why is it, that many automakers , make a pretty good looking vehicle and then DESTROY it with a F**KING mega mouth grill that consumes 75%+ of the front end of the car! The rest of this car looks pretty good and that grill is vomit inducing!
Perhaps they have the notion that it's something that would make it unreliable over years. It seems like, Genesis wants this car to last atleast 10 years, hence the 10 year warranty on these things. But yes, seat massagers should've been thrown in as it's literally found in every other full size lux cars atleast as an option.
@@geethsan1567 Interesting take. I always thought the long warranty was a good selling point. At least from 2013, the Hyundai Equus had massaging seats and almost sure comes with the same warranty.
Premium review. Nailed the attitude! I would love to have this here in Germany. Everyone and their uncle here drives Bimmers, Mercs and Audis - this Genesis would be up there with the respective mid trim levels while being unique, but not so wired that it is off putting, and you do not go totally broke having this.
It’s a great car but rich people looking at Audi and BMW will not look twice at this car. I wouldn’t even look at the Genesis if I had the money. Definitely a used car special
David M What’s that have to do with my comment?? Nowhere did I mention what people drive or if anyone gave a crap about what you drive. I SAID IF YOUR IN THE MARKET FOR A AUDI OR BMW YOU WONT EVEN LOOK AT GENESIS. Reading is fundamental
Yazeed Saber....I love the value of the K9 too! But if you take both of these cars for a drive and spend a little time poking and proding the interior, you can feel where the extra money went.
Honestly they could really capitalize on that if they wanted. Show a bunch of new money elites in a high rise office comparing textures of their business cards like Patrick Bateman, then show the smart dude that bought a better luxury car with better warranty for less.
