The Diesels come with a 3.73 rear end gear and 18.3 gallon fuel tank.... Hands down best motor jeep could have put in the wrangler. I installed the Pedal commander and it woke this engine up like a fine tune. 28 mpg on the highway - Everything we wanted in a jeep...

For me, the appeal behind the diesel is I want to run larger tires. Currently on my 07 JKU, I'm getting a combined 13 mpg on 35 inch tires. I have every intention of purchasing a Gladiator Diesel when they become available and I would like to run something in the range of 37 to 40 inch tires. The extra torque and fuel efficiency will definitely be noticeable and a much welcome change from what I have now. Midlife crisis is in full swing here, don't judge.

When TFL truck did their 66mile highway loop at 70mph they got 31.5mpg from a stock diesel wrangler. With 40's you'll probably get 20mpg if you regear the axles.
@jlo7770
@jlo7770 4 года назад
I have a ram eco diesel that I run on 35s... I get 17mpg highway. It's not gutless but it's nothing like my Cummins were. If you want better power/ fuel economy you're going to have to regear it. Im sure it has more power then that garbage gas motor they have in them now but.. if you run bigger tires expect mpg and power to drastically drop(my buddy had same year stock ram and was getting over 10mpg more) I really wanted a jeep gladiator diesel but now... I don't think so. You should also take into consideration like the tdi diesel motors that eco diesel takes a specific type of motor oil not just 5w-40 full synthetic. These eco diesel motors had a ton of motors that had the bottom end let go, they found out later it was because of their specified oil. They later changed it. I had mine in at a dealership because at 6k miles it went into limp mode and wouldn't go over 5mph. They told me (this being small Sheridan Wyoming) they were currently replacing a motor and it was the 3rd or 4th that they had replaced that year and it was June. With a new "revamped" ecodiesel I'd be highly cautious with buying a first year or even within the first couple years. The first eco diesel was absolutely trash. Oh I should also mention the transmission.. my truck running that 8 speed with 35s... at 70mph it won't go into the highest gear it jumps around 6,7,8. It constantly is changing gears messing with the fuel economy, and no that's on flat farm land, going up hills I understand but just flat highway, cruise set it is constantly changing gears. My guess is the motor is slightly revamped mainly because jeep has that 30?" Water fording and they had to relocate a bunch of stuff to make the ecodiesel work to keep that number. That's the honest truth about the ecodiesel I hope this helps, trust me I love dodge and jeep I wanted that ecodiesel to be something special and it let me down. I know this is long but what he said was right but there's a lot more to these motors then finally a better motor for a jeep.

How long will it take to recoup gas savings? 4k for diesel option plus more expensive maintenance. Doesn't make $ence.
@XavierStark

I'm not sure why people are calling BS on mpg. I've had my JL Willys Ecodiesel for 6 months now, 7600 miles later, and it's been a joy to drive. I get 28-29mpg average on long drives on the highway, and about 23-24 in the city. That's about +8-9 mpg over my old 2 door JK. Tank sizes are about the same, but my diesel easily goes another 120 miles compared to my old JK. Simple math shows 4 full tanks on the JK is about 50 miles short of what the Diesel goes in 3 full tanks. I do agree that the savings on fuel are almost completely offset by the DEF refillls, fuel filter changes every two years, and the eventual oil change costs (I get the first 2yrs free). This thing does drink DEF, I'm getting about 4250 or so miles per full tank of DEF. I've only fully refilled once and it cost me $40, though some forums say you can get it even cheaper at truck stops. As some comments have stated, modern diesels love to go long distances at highway speeds, it'll keep the engine and emissions system happy. Maintenance will always be a thing for any vehicle, gas or diesel. But similar to owning a complex German V8 or a Japanese turbo 4, buy what you can afford, and what you can afford to fix.
@XavierStark
@XavierStark 3 года назад
Upon a further search, you can find the MOPAR fuel filter for this engine for $50-60 online. Synthetic oil options are available at $50 range. The DIY cost is at about $110. Keep in mind this is every 9000-10000 miles. My old JK needed an oil change every 4000-4500 or so miles, and I payed $55 for synthetic oil and the filter. This find definitely puts you ahead in yearly cost related savings!
@XavierStark
@XavierStark 3 года назад
Last thought, many people crap on the upcharge of the diesel engine. Most Wranglers sold are auto anyway, and it's my understanding the 8-speed on the diesel is superior. So it's really a $4k upcharge in fair comparison in gas vs. diesel. Within those $4k, you're getting 3.73 gears over the standard (all diesel wranglers bring 3.73), and you're also getting a rear AND front dana 44 axle instead of just the rear which is standard on non-diesels. You got to acknowledge those improvements over gas when talking about spending $4k more.

I love the negative comments about the ecodiesel being junk when they've never owned one. My 2015 Ram 1500 got 80k miles 60k in the last 2 years no issues, only maintenance and annoying recalls. I work at CDJR store 2 other co workers have around the same mileage on theirs and it the same for them. Do not buy the diesel if you do not have a a 20+ mile one way commute or it will be a headache and do your research on how a modern diesel functions.

The one in the 1500 which is the same as this one in the Wrangler is an Italian VM Motori engine. VM Motori is FIATs commercial diesel engine manufacturer. @@whatchis1120 Fords Power Stroke is a co-developed engine with Navistar. Thats why their engines aren’t great. Navistars popular MaxxForce engines which is the basis of the Power Stroke were notoriously unreliable and unrefined in their operation. They sucked so bad that Navistar themselves started ditching them in favor of ISLs. When it comes to diesels, the best in the business are Cummins and Detroit Diesels. Volvos D13 get an honorable mention though they do have some issues with their regen systems.

can you elaborate on the 20+ mile commute comment, or have a link to videos that discuss that more in depth? if i commute 26 miles one way to work but do less than 20 mile commutes to say the grocery store, gym, etc how does that affect the motor?
@whatchis1120
@whatchis1120 3 года назад
@@FrankPapadakis It can do long term harm to the engine if it doesn’t see normal operating temps 200 degrees frequently. It all how the emissions equipment works it’s annoying to say the least. But definitely research how the scr system functions. I do minor errands with mine I just take the long route to get the temps up. If it never sees highway during the week, take it out for 20-30 min on the highway or high mph backroad. The harm is low mpg and clogged dpf which causes too much back pressure on the piston rigs and causes blow by. It’s a lot to deal with so dig into the google, and drive it’s balls off especially. Good engine just needs to be used properly.

But they did have a shop guy who just traded in a diesel wrangler so I tried that and now I’ve got 8500 miles on my ‘22 diesel gladiator. Buying new, Jeep wave covers first 3 oil changes, I asked if it included diesel, they said yes. Amen on that. This ecodiesel has a history of problems. This is the gen3 version though, and they say they addressed those problems, but its basically the same engine. Not sure the Italians have the expertise that Cummins has with diesels. Now that Jeep is FCA, it stands to reason they would go cheap on the diesel made in their country. And beyond all this, I think the diesel engine is doomed, all diesels. They just pollute too much for a lot of people (government types). I know California wants to ban them and as goes California, so go a lot of other states. Then pretty soon the federal government jumps in.

K&N filters for air. And don't do what they recommended in service manual. Oil filter and oil one change then next do oil plus all of the others. Do oil and air filter one change. Then oil and fuel others. Makes oil changes around $110. And find DEF at the pump. Avoid DEF out of the 2.5 gallon jugs at $20 per jug. When you can fill it up for $17. Just some advice from a personal owner of an Ecodiesel for 72k miles. And he is right about DEF life. Find it at a truck stop or a high use station. Same for the Diesel fuel itself.

You can get a “Tazer” that will permanently disable stop start and enable tons fo cool features. I’ll be ordering my diesel gladiator sport next week and I can not wait. The reason for the diesel is simple to me. I love passing torque and I’ll be driving straight from the dealership to my garage where I’ll have a 5” RockKrawler brand suspension system waiting for it, one ton axles with 4.88s and ARB lockers inside and 40” tires. I’ll also be pulling a 5000lb off road trailer with it and there is no way I can make that happen with the V6, a supercharger would be more costly and eliminate the warranty and a hemi swap would cost far more than all the other mods I intend to do.

...not all of us have $8k to dump in a brand new vehicle that hasn't been bought yet. The diesel Wrangler is for those that are already familiar w/diesel and own other diesel cars/trucks; have long commutes, but don't want a Prius or Tesla; have heavy loads tow but still want to get off the beaten path. Otherwise, not every one wants to deal with the stinky, oily fuel plus the other upkeep/mx that goes with it. Ive always thought of the Wrangler as the two door descendent of the CJ's, now everything Im seeing has 4 doors. Also historically speaking, jeep was always a rugged bare bones 4X4 utility type vehicle and they should really offer something like that again. A good ole CJ-7 with a 30MPG diesel engine would be really appreciated right now, especially; considering where gas prices are headed for the next 8 years.
@BennyTygohome
@BennyTygohome 3 года назад
I think the first gen wranglers (YJ code) were the closest to the CJs. Wranglers had fully boxed frame, unlike the CJ that had U channel frame that weren't nearly as strong as wranglers. YJ also had leaf springs (wider leafs than CJs had too). And the High Output (HO) 4.0 that came out in the 90s. bought my 89 YJ new for $8999+$800 dealer installed AC, wasn't a factory option +$250 folding rear bench seat. It was a 2.5 4cyl with 4.11 ring gears and a i think 2.5:1 tcase and manual 5spd with a very low 1st gear. It did awesome on trails, super light with simple all terrain tires which i think 205-75R15 tires on 15x5.5" stamped steel. i upgraded those to 235-75R15 2nd gen wranglers (TJ) introduced coil suspension the but retained 4.0 inline six as an option. I had a fully loaded 2004TJ Rubicon new for about $30k i think. Prices are crazy now, but they keep getting better and better forv trails. Today they are way more capable trail rigs than CJ but sooo expensive now (base entry wrangler 2dr, after delivery fees is $32k). Some people won't want take them on challenging trails for fear of scratching them. LOL

Excellent overview & reality check on cost of running a "smog" diesel for return on the dollars invested. I would guess 90K - 100K miles to break even. I had a 6.4 Liter Hemi in mine and the cost was about 62K with everything I did bumper to bumper. I did everything but the engine swap and it had a lot more power than the Eco Diesel. Mileage though was 13 - 14 city / 16 highway.

Have a 14 JGC diesel and 15 JKU Sahara 3.6. My 3.0L diesel at 95K miles has never had a problem outside the FCA recall for larger SCR, plugged EGR and AEM retuning. Yes I get 27-28 mpg and hiway if I am not ripping it 29-30 in town 24-25. My Wrangler does 18-22 at best so next Sept I will be getting the Wrangler Sahara Diesel and I do expect to hit 29 mpg on the interstate. I will get the MaxCare on this Wrangler because no doubt FCA will have some teething issues even after a year being out there. This isn't a new VM engine by the way. It has been in Europe for over 10 years but they don't have the EPA crap hanging on it. I will have the advanced option package as I use the adaptive cruise control all the time and cross path and blind spot protection are useful. Thanks for the review.

@@TheBandit7613 How about typing while high on FACTS? 4.0 is a dog....15/17 mpg compared to the newer V-6 at 18/22. 0-60 time so slow you could run quicker, which is what you would expect from an engine designed for a 1960's Rambler and 1970's AMC Gremlin. Top speed in a 4.0 Rubicon with 3 speed automatic is 85 mpg, and at that speed the first crosswind will flip you over. People who brag about getting 150K miles on the 4.0, big deal---the newer V-6 can do that easy as proven in the Dodge cars. I laugh when 4.0 owners bitch about the new Jeep Wrangler quality control by FIAT--the older 4.0 Jeeps were no better--in fact worse. Newer Wranglers with V-6 are better than the older ones--period. It is going to take more than low gloss paint to be better than a 2021 V-6 Wrangler. The diesel not so much.

Agree. Had a 2014 JKU with 15K in mods. Ultimately I couldn't stand the power train. Drove the 3.0L and loved it. Dealers wouldn't budge on price at 65K for a Rubicon and again I would need another 15K for my new build. That would put me at 80 GRANDE for a tuna can. I took a new Ram home that day with a 5.7L, 8 speed trans and 12" infotainment. Also, heated, and cooled seats all sorts of additional features for 48K. Jeep Wranglers are just too expensive. I miss my Rubi, but bang for my buck was the Ram all day. Great review BTW.

First of all all Wranglers equipped with the EcoDiesel come standard with 373 gears even the Ruby not the 345 slique quoted standard Dana 44s front and back standard an upgraded 8-speed automatic transmission not the same found on the 3.6. The only model that has locking diff is the Ruby you stated locking diff on the Sahara that is not accurate. Overall very informative thank you so much not being a Wrangler Enthusiast I didn't expect you to know. Also the EcoDiesel does come in a sport that's what I currently own and it is more affordable it starts off at 43000 you could go right to 35 so 37th without regearing and still getting 23 miles per gallon combined. As you've already seen with great pick up and go couldn't be happier with the power. Climbing Hills grades going into a headwind with my 35 doesn't phase this EcoDiesel Beast. Itself pays for every penny of the extra maintenance costs I know I will be forced to pay but I'll gladly do so for my every daily enjoyment everything the Wranglers lacked is EcoDiesel shines.
