We finally get behind the wheel of the diesel 2020 Jeep Wrangler! In this video, Dan Edmunds drives the new EcoDiesel variant of one of our favorite off-road vehicles in its natural habitat. We learn about the myriad advantages of the diesel engine, from its superior torque to extended range.
We've put more than 40,000 miles on our own gas-powered long-term Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four-door. We're confident that we would have enjoyed every one of those miles much more had the EcoDiesel engine been available when we bought it. Even if it never pays for itself in fuel savings, the EcoDiesel is worth considering.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Diesel Review
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is finally available with the promised EcoDiesel V6, and the wait has been well worth it. The EcoDiesel engine is 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. That's slightly less power than the 2.0-liter turbo-four and the 3.6-liter V6, but its torque output crushes them both because neither gasoline engine can muster even 300 lb-ft. We may have been sold on horsepower our entire lives, but torque is what you feel when the light turns green, when you roll onto the throttle to pass someone, or when you creep over a fallen log or any rocky off-road obstacle.
The Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel's abundant torque lives up to all the advance billing. Acceleration is smooth and strong. At cruising speed, the sound of the diesel disappears into the background - which, in a boxy Jeep, consists of a not insignificant level of wind noise. It only comes back into consciousness when things load up as you climb a grade or pull out to make a pass. In cases like this, it's not necessary to instinctively jump on the throttle to force the transmission to kick down a couple of gears. It just moves out smartly, dropping down what feels like one gear, at most.
It rides and handles much like any equivalent gasoline-powered Wrangler we've driven. We test-drove both the subdued Sahara and the rowdy Rubicon. Both are steady, and the steering feel that comes with the Wrangler's solid front axle and recirculating-ball steering is the same as ever: indistinct and vague, but somehow predictable and easy to manage.
It's all part of the plan. These vehicles aren't supposed to feel any different from their gasoline counterparts. Jeep retuned the suspension but only to compensate for the heavier mass of the diesel powertrain and its exhaust after-treatment systems.
You can get the EcoDiesel in the Sport, Sahara and Rubicon models, but only in the Unlimited four-door body style, which makes sense in practical terms. Jeep believes the smaller and lighter two-door does not necessarily need the extra grunt. Beyond that debatable point, the reality is there simply isn't enough underbody space to package the diesel engine's more complex exhaust system.
A diesel's massive torque and superior fuel economy (and therefore driving range) are significant advantages when you're exploring wild places. But abundant torque and driving range are also beneficial to pavement-bound consumers. A diesel engine can be a hard sell in the case of sedans and more family-oriented SUVs because of its noise and vibration, but Jeep people might see it as a feature, not a drawback.
Jeep Wrangler Diesel Off-Road
The diesel's extra torque is even more eye-opening when pavement turns to dirt, and after dirt turns to deep sand and rocks. Our test course consisted of large boulders, sandstone ledges, awkward off-camber situations and lots of sand. Delicate throttle control is critical in such tricky terrain, and the EcoDiesel proves to be even easier to manage than we expected.
Switch the Jeep's transfer case into low-range gearing and you've got plenty of torque, even at idle. Only gentle pressure is required to build enough steam to climb slopes you might need help climbing up on foot. Ledges and steps are easy to surmount without anything like a brute-force approach. In a weird way, it feels as if you can almost idle up and over almost anything, but at any speed you choose because you don't have to stab the throttle and rev the engine much to get the torque you need.

Diesel in your Wrangler: Yes or no?

If the diesel in the Wrangler was like the diesel in the Colorado - 4 cylinder with 100 hp less then the gas engine, I'd say no. But what Jeep did is they left horsepower to be damn near comparable to the gas engine but added so so much torque and in the most usable part of the power band - a place where the V6 feels flat. As such just for the improved engine performance I think the 3.5 grand premium is worth it over the gas V6, that it will save on gas is just an added benefit. This powertrain might be enough to sway me away from a manual transmission Jeep....

I have been waiting for the diesel to come out for 2 years. I placed my order the second day they were available. The cost is nothing compared to the torque gains and the ability it will provide to an already an off-road beast. I currently have a diesel, so from a fuel perspective it will save me 33% at a minimum. Fun factor is Priceless!

We have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the I6. 110K miles. Still a great vehicle, and is my daily driver. Will be keeping it for many more years as a play vehicle, but will be ordering a new Unlimited Rubicon diesel on Saturday. “We” have been asking for a diesel option for years, and they’ve finally listened. Yes it is expensive, but so was the 4Runner TRD Pro we purchased in 2017. This new Jeep checks off all the boxes for me. YMMV. Excellent review, thank you.

i have been a chrysler/mopar fan for 50 years. however, i purchased a new 2015 RAM 3500 dooley with the Cummings diesel and had NOTHING but problems with it over the emission system. it was in the shop 12 times in the first year i owned it and had the entire exhaust system replaced. i ended up suing Chrysler under a lemon law case and settled for a refund of $8k from Chrysler. i then sold the truck. i absolutely LOVED the truck when it ran. but you couldn't depend upon it to get home. i don't know what the 2020 diesel's are like from Chrysler but the 2015's could NOT be driven just in town or on short distances - the cummings has to go into regeneration mode to burn the soot in the DEF filter or an emission code gets triggered and then the vehicle itself will only travel another 200 miles and then stops. i would certainly look into possible emission problems with this new Jeep diesel before i would buy one. one other thing, i live in Pittsburgh, PA and the shop rates at the RAM dealer were $50/hr more for the diesel - gas motors were billed at $75/hr. where i was billed at $125/hr. for work on my diesel RAM. after my experience i determined that diesel engines are MORE expensive to own and maintain than gas unless you are doing a lot of towing or long millage trips. and of course, i can buy gasoline anywhere around Pittsburgh, there's only about 10 locations that sell diesel.

I love the idea of 442 foot lb of TQ. great for crawling or even stop light acceleration... Even better if you are going to tire up to 35's or more. I have an 18 JLU and want the diesel. However, the same motor in the ram has had lots of issues. and yes if the AQMD was not around you could talk all that crap off get more power, better MPG's better reliability and use that 5 gal pee tank for fuel to give you another 100+ mile range. but I will wait at least until 21 to see it they have issues...

3.0 diesel wrangler real life consumption is city- 17-liters on 100km and hwy is 10-liters on 100km. which are the great numbers for suv like that. at the heavy off-road consumption will be double even triple of city consumption which is normal for off-road conditions.

The price difference over the 3.6 gas engine, although significant, does not bother me. We paid, as I recall, a $4,500 premium for the 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland diesel my wife had (until selling it this past January prior to our move to Molokai). We have a 2012 JK Unlimited Rubicon that we've owned since new. While we've driven several 3.6 JL Wrangler Rubicons from a Jeep dealership in Utah over the past two years, we've been holding out for the diesel version. Later this month we're flying to Maui for six days. Our rental car there my wife reserved for us is a Wrangler Unlimited. We're hoping we'll get a JL Wrangler rather than a JK Wrangler. (I'm practically foaming at the mouth waiting for this new diesel Rubicon. I'm hoping the same thing happens to my wife who loved her diesel Grand Cherokee Overland.) An exceptional review you've done on this new diesel Rubicon. While I seriously wanted one before seeing your review, my wife will have to keep a serious eye on me---and keep me away from a Jeep dealership---while we're on Oahu for events surrounding the 7th in early December. Fabulous job with your review! Thank you very much! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.

I've owned several Diesels over the last 30 years and the only concern I have is the number of re gens the DPF would go through in a week of wheeling in Moab. Over time can the re gens keep the DPF functional or would it need to be removed for cleaning? Not cheap & maybe a limp mode condition could exist? Otherwise I think they've sorted this little Italian Diesel out pretty well. The first gens I know had some cam phaser issues. I know about the emission law suit, not surprised with the EPA having so much input on design requirements on new vehicles. Diesels are designed to smoke to a degree wether we like it or not.

The price difference doesn't scare me either! Especially since I am getting the diesel version and transporting it to Europe for off-roading (mainly Greece and Italy) where the diesel fuel costs much less than gasoline; I suspect this difference there has to do with taxes rather than refining process. So, the difference in the price of the Jeep should be amortized over there much faster. Yes, I have ordered the 2020 Rubicon and am taking delivery in January and shipping it to Greece from Savannah, GA, in April. Should be fun. BTW, I have ordered mine with BFG KO2; what do you think? You did not mention anything in your review about tires. Also, FYI, I have a 2016, JGC Overland, Trail Rated, which I purchased in Atlanta and shipped over to Europe and am extremely happy with how it handles. Apart from three recalls for what I consider minor issues, I have not had any issues...it takes me to places where even goats dare not go! I have enjoyed your video tremendously. Good work.

With the weight of the 4xe dragging it down once it kicks into gas only or even hybrid and the variance of torque as you switch, and the big gain for the diesel in torque above the 2.0 i4 and 2.6 v6, what is the reason for not picking one of these up lightly used for thousands under new msrp? Depends how it is treated a lot of people don’t let it warm up and that’s why you hear issues on the ram 1500 but you look at people who do treat them right and let them burn all the excess fuel in the cylinder they don’t gum up and have issues. With reliability you also have to take into account half the people who take the wrangler rock climbing banging a metal jeep on solid rocks and going through mud which gets everywhere and ruins things compared to the average Toyota driver who stays on pavement treats extremely nicely and doesn’t ever scrape up the underbelly. Not to mention all the wear and tear of people put on their vehicles in upgrades

3.73s across the board for the diesel regardless of Rubicon.
@andymckane7271
@andymckane7271 4 года назад
The 4.10's of the gas Rubicon would probably produce too much torque at the axles when combined with the diesel---even with the Dana 44's. Too much torque can result in axle shafts that break far too easily---just ask any "series" Land Rover owner. I know this for 30 years of experience driving Land Rover Series IIA's and III's. Andy McKane, Molokai, Hawaii.
@JsGarage
@JsGarage 4 года назад
Andy McKane Yea the diesel simply doesn’t need the gear. As it is the 4.10s with the gas and 8 speed is overkill for the stock tires especially with the 4:1 low. I don’t think a diesel Rubicon will have any issues with 37s and stock gears. Really with 442 TQ larger tires on the stock axles becomes more of a worry though.
@DanEdmunds
@DanEdmunds 4 года назад
Yes. And it makes sense. There so much more torque here that you don't need 4:10s. Gearing is just a torque multiplier, after all. If you're motor makes tone more, you're still way ahead even backing off one step like this. And the good news is the Sahara and Sport don't get shortchanged.

driving diesels is about efficient engineering, that's why the germans from Germany (i say that cause a lot of americans are actually descendant/ethnically germans themselves) are all about diesel. the future of cars is not electric cars like tesla thinks, it's clean fuel, biodiesel and ethanol. the usa government invested a lot of time, effort and money in the oil business, for that reason gas is cheaper in america, so americans have not felt the need to switch. but gas is simply not susteinable, it's not renewable, so we will have to switch sooner or later, and it's better for americans to do it sooner, and start introducing diesel in the market, than when an energy crisis occurs

@@OO-nb2kt the batteries in electric cars. they have numerous toxic components an heavy metals that contaminate the environment. for that reason i truly believe electric cars are not the future of vehicles, unless science discovers new technologies to create fusion out of particles or some shit like that. while electric cars use batteries, it's a no-no for the planet. you have no idea how harmful they are for the environment, specially the ones of vehicles that are HUGE. not only them being disposed of, but the mining of the materials and minerals to manufacture them in the first place, it hurts the earth even more than sucking the oil from the planet's entrails we already have the technology for clean and renewable energy, clean fuels, biodiesel and ethanol when rudolf diesel created the diesel engine, it was meant to run on veggie oil, so anybody could fill up there cars without depending on the oil industry and freaking greedy executives and the government speculating the prices of gas and taxing the shit out of it, exploiting people. it wasn't until later that the freaking oil industry managed to kill his vision an make diesel reliant on oil anyway. but biodiesel still exists nonetheless, older diesel trucks run on veggie oil perfectly well. people manufacture there own fuel at home on their yard, with home-made furnaces, ethanol, biodiesel and even fossil fuel gasoline, there are videos on youtube teaching it it was specifically meant for farmers to fill up there farm trucks and tractors, so no worries on the strength department. that is why anywhere in the world other than america hauling trucks or vehicles that carry weight run on the good ol' diesel

@OO-nb2kt 4 года назад
My beautiful and amazing Princess here’s an article for you. It looks like you are spreading misinformation. The electric car is an infant compared to gasoline/Diesel engines. Also, you have to consider what is practical for a company to produce that will generate revenue. Do you own a vehicle that runs on vegetable oil? Tesla specifically has made great strides with the electric car and it’s only getting better. Did you compare the Tesla model 3 performance to the bmw m4? Tesla is ahead of the game. Although electric cars so pollute. It’s absurd to say that the electric car pollutes more than a Diesel engine. and they are only improving. The electric motor is only a few parts compared to the gas engine and diesel. Electric is not perfect but it’s now just getting started. www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/oct/25/electric-cars-emit-50-less-greenhouse-gas-than-diesel-study-finds
