Moto Guzzi returns to the motorcycle adventure riding scene in a pleasing medium-size package with its all-new V85 TT Adventure. Designed as a retro-themed but modern-featured ADV bike, the V85 TT is designed for riders looking to be able to travel farther, while experiencing the classic heartbeat of Guzzi’s signature transverse-mounted air-cooled V-twin.
--
The V85 is powered by an overhauled 853cc twin. Yes, its cylinders still poke out from both sides of the machine, but the dynamic and character of the engine are more refined than ever. Still it retains that trademark Guzzi feel that makes it feel like, well, no other motorcycle on the road.
The engine hangs inside a steel trellis-type chassis with road-competent suspension that delivers a good balance between sport and comfort. Of course, styling is a big selling point, and this Guzzi, certainly is a head turner with its throwback lines to the Italian company’s Paris-Dakar racing days.
But don’t just take our word for it; see how the V85 TT Adventure performs on the road as we negotiate mean SoCal traffic during our work week commute.

I work at a Guzzi Dealership and must say it is a nice bike. We've sold about a dozen of them so far and had many bikes traded in on them. A ktm 1290 super adventure, a yamaha super tenere, a couple GSs, etc. According to Guzzi, 70% of the trade ins on V85s have been non Guzzi's. They've been a hit for sure.

YEs woho super mega NOT fun to change a clutch. :( o had a R1150GS 2000. and i LOVED that engine, real lowend power, but first gear was to fast for offroad, or take off when have bagage and pilion in slight uphill.. etc the Overdrive gear was also to tall here in Åland islands we have maximum speed limit 90kmh and the Beemer was not happy at those rpms in E (overdrive) gear. tho the r1150gs ADV has a shorter first gear and shorter (normal) 6's gear. EDIT: also it was super expensive to change cluth so i sold it, actually traded it for a V-strom 650 -2006 woth racks and centerstand and 3 bags etc.. I really like the v-strom more. that engine is also fun and easily pull 2 people at 80kg each in 90-100kmh all day.

Thank-you for getting the pronunciation correct (mostly)! Always loved the look of a transverse twin, my first bike was a Honda CX500D, then the scary CX650Turbo. One advantage of this layout though is the accessibility of the cylinders themselves. Easy to get to for plugs, valves , etc. Hopefully Guzzi has addressed the typical reliability issues of Italian bikes .

Since I just test road one yesterday I think your review was pretty spot on. I definitely agree the TFT could be bigger. When I rode it was very windy ,the wind screen didn't help at all . A nother thing I noticed was a noisy, either the shaft drive or tire noise. But over all a very nice bike with good power . It felt very light, shifting was smooth. If it just had a wind screen like my 2018 Vstrom 1000XT it would have been a great ride. Please don't talk about doing wheelies or backing it in when doing reviews. That's exactly what gives motorcycle rider's a bad name . Coming from a MSF instructor and someone who has been riding 50 year's. We all to pay when it comes to insurance to make up for the stupid people crashing doing wheelies. If you want to do that get a dirt bike and ride off road.

This bike wasn't even on my radar but I stopped into a dealer near me to look at a Triumph 800 Tiger. I sat on the Tiger and just felt that the bike was very long and felt like it would be cumbersome. On the way out I saw the Guzzi sitting there . I sat on it and felt immediately comfortable on it. I never lusted after an Italian bike before and if I do end up with it one day I will probably regret it.

But they will be getting another couple in soon so I will take one out soon enough. It's nice to get your expert input beforehand. I have been very curious about the engine. Seems like you are enjoying it! I like the sound of the engine. Gearbox seems very smooth as well. And as you mentioned, the cockpit is very nice. Nearly all suspension forks have their rebound and compression features separated. That is why compression and rebound adjustments are on separate sides. It has nothing to do with cost savings. It is because one side of the fork absorbs the bumps, and the other side pushes the tire back down onto the ground. Motorcycle 101.

I think you need to study up on your history of Moto Guzzi. The engine was NOT always transversely mounted. The first models in the 1920s were single cylinder engines. The 1933 500 Bicilindrica was an "L-Twin" and looked just like a Ducati engine configuration and remained in production until 1951. It was not until 1965 - over 40 years after the company started - that Giulio Cesare Carcano would design the transversely mounted 90° V-twin that now defines a Moto Guzzi.

@SteviePeeOutDoorLife
@SteviePeeOutDoorLife 4 года назад
Indicators are not always good on bikes. If they are not self or if you forget, then sometimes people think that you were turning and they turn in front of you. Most collisions happen at, usually with a vehicle turning in front of a bike. I have my rear signals on but I disconnect my front
@r.j.bedore9884
@r.j.bedore9884 4 года назад
@@SteviePeeOutDoorLife You do know that is illegal, right? If the bike doesn't have front AND rear turn signals, it is no longer street legal. Also, you are legally obligated to signal every turn or lane change, regardless of whether you are driving a car, riding a motorcycle, or even riding a bicycle (albeit with hand signals). If a police officer saw you switching lanes without signaling the way he was in this video, you would be getting a ticket.

I think you would be quite surprised what CAN go offroad. Would a 21" be better at rolling over obsticles? Yep. And a 29" mountain bike is also better at rolling over obstacles yet a ton of riders still prefer a 27.5" pr even 26" . Point is ride what you like.

Perpendicularly located engine, lol? They call it a "longitudinal" v-twin. I like the base model color without the bags better. It's a handsome bike IMHO. I think it would make an excellent commuter bike or just an all-around fun street bike, but I wouldn't want to take trips on a smaller displacement bike like this. And it's not a real adventure tourer like the Tiger 800, or BMW F850GSA, etc. Thanks for the info and for posting this.

You wouldn't reccamend taking it off road? Isn't off road capability a minimum requirement for an adventure bike?

These bikes can definitely handle light off roading, I think he personally doesn't recommend that cuz it doesn't have tubeless tires or super high ground clearance with long fork travel but I seen them handle light off roading well enough for an adventure bike

The 2nd year of the bike will be interesting. 2019s were sold out at two area dealers in July here in DC. The V85 has sold well for them and at 13K in the US - bags included - it's a compelling deal.

4:15 is a perfect example of why lanesplitting is not always the greatest idea. Look how awkward this guy make that still-traffic situation, just because he's on two wheels. Sometimes you should just wait your turn.

Actually, this whole video is a perfect example of how californian motorcyclists can make an average commute a nightmare for every other first-world motorist on the roadway. Pick a lane, fucko. Who with a brain rides a white line in moving, open traffic?

No lane splitting in Louisiana. I myself think it’s dangerous and very rude. Love the bike though.

I'm not trying to argue with you with my comment. I somewhat agree with you, but just wanted to provide some of the other viewpoints out their. God knows we don't need any more stress these days. I hope you have a good weekend. My understanding is that lane splitting is only illegal in the 49 U.S. states. It is legal in California and the entire rest of the world. I've never ridden anywhere that it was legal (was stationed in Japan for 2.5 years, but didn't have a motorcycle license while there). Lane splitting can be dangerous, but the danger is usually caused by the rider, stressing usually. Lane splitting can also be safer. One example usually given is if a rider is sitting at a traffic light between lanes and someone else rear ends the other cars at the light (or blows through the light) then the rider is safer because they are not in the travel lane. Rude, I can see that too. Again, that is usually on the rider. If the rider is blowing past stopped traffic at 15-20 mph I'd be pretty p.o.'d if I was in one of the cars. But if the rider is going 2-3 mph, working their way through stopped traffic, then I wouldn't mind. There was a study some years ago that found that where lane splitting is legal, if 10% of motorists switch to riding motorcycles then overall traffic congestion will decrease by 40%. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the study. I would expect living in Louisiana you don't have much traffic congestion. I used to work in D.C. as a field service tech. I would leave the house at 4:30 am to drive 90 miles and be onsite at 7:00 am and I would usually be late. If I left the jobsite by 3pm I could be home a little before 5pm. If I left between 3:15pm and 3:30pm I would get home by 6 pm usually. Worst time driving home was on July 3rd a couple years ago. After driving for 3 hours I stopped and called my wife and told her I was going to stop and eat dinner. After eating I drove the remaining traffic-free 45 minutes home. Some big cities like D.C. and New York could definitely benefit by legalizing lane-splitting.

I think the difference between lane splitting and lane filtering would address your concerns. It has a lot to do with your attitude when riding. To be able to filter to the front in traffic helps everyone.

I think it's way more street oriented than the 850. It can compete with the likes of the 750 gs or the 650 v strom. It has some appeal over those in terms of design and build quality.

that 80hp is crank horsepower, compared to rear-wheel horsepower the 67hp, which we measure on our dyno. Rear-wheel horsepower is the actual horsepower you feel, and have on hand when you twist the throttle.

Do you still have to pull the bottom off the engine to change the oil filter on Guzzis? Not what I would call "easy." I pretty well hate pretend adventure bikes anyway, and this is as pretend as they come. Might consider a sport touring version even with its pretend sport.
