In this video we feature the manual transmission Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 in Racing Yellow. When compared against the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4, you need to frame the debate correctly.
With only 20 bhp between the cars and a 0-60 difference of 0.1 seconds, it's not about the numbers. Watch this video for a refreshingly different opinion.
Enjoying Life & Cars To The MAX!!

Great insights, it would be great to see a back to back comparison video road and track between 718 GTS 4.0 and 718 GT4, if that’s something you could arrange. I suspect it would be closer than you’d expect on track and faster track times don’t necessarily make for a more enjoyable experience.
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 3 года назад
That would be awesome, however this is a hobby channel with a low subscriber base compared to the big boys. So getting people to take me seriously is a bit of an issue with regards to booking tracks and getting cars. I don’t mention it in the videos, but if more people started hitting the like button on my videos, the RU-vid algorithm would push more videos to a bigger audience and then my subscriber base could possibly grow. You need a minimum of 10k subs to be taken seriously, better still on 50k. This being a niche Cayman channel, I can’t see that happening any time soon ;-)

I think you will find the biggest differences are in the feel and lateral G limits. The GT4 has more hard mount chassis points and wider/stickier tires. I say for a performance enthusiast, going to the track or not, the GT4 is the better choice. If you are just wanting to go out and cruise, then the GTS is the better choice.
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 3 года назад
TRZ0612 Yeah fair points. Given the UK climate and the fact we’re in Autumn now, we’re soon at the point when Cup 2’s on a GT4 start becoming dangerous. Coupled with some badly maintained roads across the UK, it really takes the pleasure out of having a GT4. I do believe the GT4 looks better and handles better, however I was trying to address the on-road characteristics here. Maybe if I lived in sunny California it would definitely be a GT4 for me ;-)
@mrjmr5985
@mrjmr5985 3 года назад
@@TRZ0612 wider more grippy tyres don’t make for a more enjoyable drive, lap times aren’t everything. I think the 718 GT4 is effectively redundant with the GT4 RS and GTS 4.0 in the range, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s discontinued after a short PDK production run. For context I have owned a 981 cayman, currently own a 718 GTS 4.0 cayman and have a January 2020 build paint to sample 718 Spyder on order with summer tyre option as I live in the north of Scotland.
@TRZ0612
@TRZ0612 3 года назад
Mr jmr fair point for some. I fall into the performance category though and do use all lateral grip. I’m in California, so it makes more sense here. Even if not tracking , pulling 1.2g on on/off ramps are quite fun.

I was thinking about trading in my 718 GT4 until I finally took it to a track. Unbelievable car on track. Taking it to the limit also made me appreciate it on the road more too as you learn its limits. I preferred the volume of sound on my 981 GT4 I had previously, but 718 sound is more sophisticated in my opinion. Also after being on track all day I didn’t have a headache from the exhaust noise. Any GT4 owner who takes their car on a track will be super impressed after they get over the shock at how fast it is in a straight line when you can give it ‘full send’ and the adjustability and forgiving nature in a turns, both constant radius and fast.

Great channel and straight it the 4.0 GTS video for, counting down my order days. How comfy were the CF bucket seats, not been able to sample these yet at the dealers.
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 3 года назад
Congratulations on your order! The carbon seats are super comfy in the GTS 4.0. I’m call them supportive rather than firm/harsh. Don’t forget the suspension is softer in the 4.0 GTS than in a GT4. If I were to talk about the 718 GT4, I’d say 75% of the firmness comes from the suspension, 25% comes from the carbon seats and what they transmit into your body. The suspension in a GTS 4.0 is roughly speaking half as firm as a GT4. Great balance. I’m a bit old school with my 987.2, so personally I’d like a stiffer steering wheel and stiffer clutch pedal on the 4.0 GTS, but heck it’s still a great car.
@MsCliveharper
@MsCliveharper 3 года назад
Agree 100% that this is the ultimate Cayman/Boxster unless you want something track focused. Porsche really have nailed it with the 718 4.0 GTS! My only reservation, until I’ve driven one, is the hydraulic steering but I think you just cleared that up. Love the matching yellow tie; yellow seat belts really should have been spec’d on that car. Are the carbon fibre bucket seats an option on the GTS?
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 3 года назад
Hi Clive, what happened to the gin o’clock thumbnail, I’m sure that was you before?! Yes the bucket seats need to be specified and aren’t cheap on the GTS. If you’re coming from the 987 the steering is very light, especially at low speeds, e.g. car park turning. However as the 718 GT4 is pretty soft too, I didn’t make a big deal of it in this video. Compared to the 1st gen Caymans, the clutch and steering are soft. No getting away from that.

MAX REVS hi Max, yes I did have the gin o’clock thumbnail, you’re very observant, but thought it was about time I changed it for the Boxster as I spend a lot of my time on here watching Porsche related content. @MAXREVS

Me personally, a PDK 718 GTS 4.0 would be too much of a detached driving experience. Given the softer ride compared to a GT4, I think this car comes alive on roads in manual guise. You have auto-blip to rev match on downshift, and the fabulous shift is a great way to connect with the car. Not mentioned in the video, is that the clutch is so soft compared to that in my 987.2. It’s not at all tiresome driving this car in manual, even in a bit of stop / start traffic. However as mentioned in this video, there is no generic right answer for everyone. Each to their own. Every Cayman is a great car!

Your video production is getting much better. Nice to see new content after such a long time. Porsche have played it well, they have the efficient cayman 718 with the 4 cylinder and now the gts 4.0 with 6 cylinder to please the old school crowd. A cayman that appeals to a wider audience with more choice. This one is in the sweet spot and agree if I had the money this is the one I’d go for and save on £10k difference between the Gt 4.0 and buy a Rolex watch!!

Great vid .... do like these new gts’s .... although once specced staring down the barrel of an 75-80k motor .... which really does make the 981 generations seem very good value , as they are essentially the same platform..... sort of agree with the comments on the 2.5 gts ... they seem the bargain right now and I think in a few years when tuners properly get their hands on them will be an amazing buy ... probably capable of 450bhp with a exhaust and map ! But there’s a reason why they are a bargain ... people buy Porsche’s to feel captivated by the experience and a big part of that is the sound . I’m not a hater at all of the turbo’s but most people feel the same way about them unfortunately. From that video max .... I’d say buy some bucket seats for yours 😊
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 3 года назад
Believe it or not Josh, I was thinking about your car driving back from this video shoot. Do I mod my 987.2 to my heart’s content, or start the process of saving for a new Cayman over a number of years? The answer was made for me based on my finances... I’ve spent around £10k on my Cayman since purchase. It would be foolish for me to sell my car, and I don’t have spare cash, so I’m keeping the 987.2. I don’t actually feel the need for bucket seats in my 987.2. I don’t have PASM, and you’d be surprised how much harder my car rides than the 981 or 718 platform. Bucket seats in the 718 GTS 4.0 seemed perfect. Bucket seats in a 718 GT4 can be harsh at times on poor road surfaces. It’s time to just be happy with what I’ve got now ;-)

Max, the depreciation factor on the GT4 will be significantly lower than the GTS and more than make up for any price differences between them over time. The more aggressive aero looks on the GT are also worth the price in my opinion - even more so between the GTS Boxster vs Spyder.

At the moment at least, there are waiting lists for GTS 4.0 build slots and the GT4 is relatively easy to get as the waiting list have melted away due to Covid. The GTS 4.0 appeals to a much wider audience, one of the unique selling points of the 718 GT4 was that it was the only way to get a new 6 cylinder cayman, this no longer exists. Agree on the Spyder it’s the best looking car under £100k, the GT4 on the other hand is the motoring equivalent of sticking a pair of socks down the front of your pants.
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 3 года назад
Random Hawks and JMR. You both raise good points. I still love the looks of the GT4, don’t get me wrong. The 718 GT4 is THE BEST LOOKING GT4 in my eyes, apart from the rear exhaust which I prefer on the 981 GT4. I can only speak from the few cases I know so far, however getting a 4.0 GTS isn’t that easy. I certainly don’t think you can walk into a dealership with purchase history and get one, unless you get very lucky on a cancelled order which has already been built. As mentioned, and was the case with this chap in the video, he went from the 718 GT4 waiting list to the GTS 4.0, so I suspect a number of people are now thinking... ‘heck I can get the same GT4 engine in a slightly milder car’. I learnt in this video not to focus on the price differences... do whatever is right for you.

Fair point. I’ve been fortunate enough to spend time with 718 GT4 and 981 GT4 owners. There is an everyday penalty in driving a GT4 on UK roads, which at times make you think you could be living in a third world country. Until this video, I’ve always considered the GT4 the better car if you can afford it. However now it’s not just a cost difference between the GTS and GT4 which goes through my mind. It’s which car could I live with for a long time. The GTS is the better road car. That doesn’t change the fact, the GT4 is that little bit more special on road.

Manny Singh Congratulations Manny!! Nothing like stirring the pot up a bit... thought I’d put my comments out there. The GT4 is the more special car, and agreed looks that bit more special with the aero treatment. The looks of the GT4 also means many of the GT4 owners I know get approached by boy racers at the traffic lights, and a few have been followed by unmarked police cars waiting for the driver to do something wrong. There is something to gain in each car, which comes at a cost. Both cars are awesome, the final decision resting with the buyer who’s putting their money down. Truth be told, I’d probably go with a highly specced 718 GTS 4.0, however that’s because I tend to buy and hold my cars for a long time. Would a GT4 suit me and my back aged 55?

@@MAXREVS I'm 57 with a history of sports-injury related herniated discs in my back, so I got the 18 way seats in my GT4. I know, sacrilege! But, the seats have excellent side bolsters so around that you can adjust to snug your back and legs in quite tightly, are very comfortable, and soften the ride just enough to make the car more usable, especially on the well maintained roads I'm blessed to enjoy where I live. I guess you have to adjust and adapt the car to where you live, what you want and what your body can handle as you age! :-) The great thing about these cars is that Porsche gives you the ability to choose options to let you make them into what you want them to be. Gotta say, I think a lot of bs is spoken about the 4.0 compared to the 2.5. Everyone says that the 4.0 is better than the 2.5 but the reality is the 2.5 beats the 4.0 in nearly every department in terms of performance. The only thing the 4.0 wins on without any debate is the sound but with a 3rd party exhaust fitted to a 2.5 I think it’s actually the best car, the figures show it. What’s more there’s almost no turbo lag in the 2.5. Everyone just jumps on the bandwagon about the 2.5. It’s actually a fantastic car. I’d go as far as to say the 2.5 Cayman/Boxster GTS is possibly the best car Porsche make.

I feel for you James, the flat 4 is a good engine, but now the 4.0 GTS is out residuals will suffer. I have a problem with Porsche cashing in on the demand for a flat 6 and charging £64k for something we had as standard on the 987 and 981. £18k for 2 more cylinders?

Rich Fixes Cars yep, agreed. I think the smart money is on the 4 cylinder actually but I don’t have a dog in the fight. It just seems unbelievably overlooked despite out performing the 4.0 in almost every department. In truth I feel a lot of reviewers (exc Max from this) just see what someone else has said and more or less copy them, they don’t seem to think for themselves. I also feel it’s kind of ‘trendy’ to love the 4.0. although, yes, it does sound good straight out of the box, so to speak. Personally, if I was buying I’d buy the 2.5 GTS and fit an Armytrix exhaust on it. There’s a RU-vid vid about them on a GTS on here somewhere and, OK, they don’t sound like a flat six but they do sound cool, very cool.

James - I sold my 718 2.5 S (highly spec’d) for my current 718 Spyder. I agree the 2.5 is a great car and under appreciated - it’s a blast putting the pedal to the floor. Putting aside performance numbers, they are just two completely different driving experiences. The level of pure driver engagement in a manual NA flat6 4L GT4/Spyder vs a PDK Turbo 4 cylinder 718 cannot be compared on paper, but easily in the drivers seat. On a GT4/Spyder, you feel the rumble of the flat 6 engine idling, hear the scream of the exhaust running up to 8k redline and the induction noise of this huge 4L engine outputting linear power while mechanically shifting up and down the gears - it’s an unparralled man/machine connection. It just comes down to different values for each person - luckily, Porsche gives lots of choices!

Nice car.....but not as nice as a GT4. If you spend 80k+ € on a Cayman you spend the extra 15k to get into the GT territory. I have seen some test here in germany where the GTS 4.0 was quicker in the acceleration than the GT4.....and btw, the GT4 is not really stiff. It actually pretty comfy as a daily.

@@MAXREVS ....and you know that I am not a big fan of the 982 GT4....although I own one......but as I said .....4.0 too close to a GT4.

You should crank the music up louder between dialogue for an even more jarring experience.

LOL @ Suit and tie. These car videos are getting boring. All the same. Save shots, same words, same comments. Yawn And what up with not driving it?! Passenger reviews are lame.
