How to: Connect and use IPhone IOS through the VW 8" Touch Screen System. This will be a similar setup on most of the 2018, 2019, 2020 Volkswagen lineup!!
System is not wireless and will need a USB connection to work! Thanks!
Car used: 2019 VW Tiguan SEL Premium AWD
Attention: I apologize for the tapping noise near the middle of the video, the GoPro Case ended up malfunctioning! The noise is bad between 2:00 - 2:45 so skip to after that if it is annoying! Thank you for understanding!

I apologize for the tapping noise between 2:00 and 2:45 as the camera case malfunctioned without me realizing. Please skip that part if you find it annoying. I just go over how to rearrange the apps on the screen during that portion of the video so it is not that important. Thank you!

Whatever happened to VW’s plan to integrate wireless Apple CarPlay? They announced that for 2017 (No, that’s not a typo) cars, and then went silent. In the meantime, BMW began back in 2017, and several automakers followed suit but only on certain models. I think it maybe exclusivity related, but no one has been able to confirm that.

Hi, I have a 19 Atlas SEL Premium with a very similar audio system. The ‘quick apps’, or shortcuts in the left, is there a way to arrange those? Couldn’t find the setting on my phone. I have audiobooks as a default shortcut that I never use, and my text and phone shortcuts are last so they are constantly swapping back and forth, based on what was used last. It’s very annoying.

Those are purely based off the apps you use the most / most recently and unfortunately can’t be permanently selected as favorites. Maybe in a future iOS update!

bigsarge0273 on the high end model that comes with built in navigation it is completely free! But you will eventually have to pay for traffic updates after I believe 3-4 years

Hi guys, does anyone know to help me with this stuggle....i have the same tigual and i want to show navi maps on that screen. Is there a way to make it happen without using my android all the time? Upload maps on sd card and then plug it in maybe? What type should the file be in that case. Thanks

Thank you for watching. Does your Tiguan have a dedicated Nav Button like the one in the video? If not unfortunately there is no way to get Nav on the screen unless its from your phone via CarPlay or Android Auto. You can look to get an upgraded head unit but that is expensive and might cause issues with your warranty. Hope this helps!

Dwar_k thank you for watching. This is not my car but all modern vehicles disable the passenger airbag unless there is something over a certain weight on the seat and then it will turn on. I believe it’s around 80lbs or so will turn it on.

Maps don’t work correctly. When I hook up my iPhone to CarPlay, maps go haywire. The maps show incorrect locations and give wrong directions. Everything else associated with CarPlay works fine. Any suggestions on how to fix. The Volkswagen dealership in Baton Rouge, LA claimed they’ve never seen this problem.

@@benrub it seems to have resolved itself. This was when I would use Apple Maps in CarPlay on my wife’s Volkswagen. Worked perfectly fine on my dodge charger.

Unfortunately Manufacturers purposely do not let any video apps show up in the Carplay system.

Car Tech Connect Thanks, I’m planning on buying a new car tomorrow and I couldn’t find any documentation stating that. I just didn’t want the car to lose functionality after 6 months. I could care less about the VW stuff as long as CarPlay continues to work for free.

My 2016 golf r never lost the ability to use carplay the 3 years I had it and I never paid for any subscriptions. And my 2018 alltrack is a S trim and it doesn’t even have car net and has complete access to carplay 👍

Imane Naït Oultit Thanks for watching! You can select and play a RU-vid video from your phone and the sound with come through the carplay system but Apple does not allow the RU-vid app to show on the carplay screen (as it is very distracting) Hope this helps!

Imane Naït Oultit those people must have “jailbroken” iPhone software which allows RU-vid to come through along with many other not supported apps on the carplay screen. I personally wouldn’t attempt this as you can mess up your iPhone doing so. Good luck!

That usb only offer 0.5amp, so it can’t really charge the phone if we use Waze for navigation, my only complain so far.

@@benrub Yes, when I used Waze for navigation. I have switched to Apple map and it seems better now, I also got a new device that can turn it into wireless CarPlay so I can use usb-c MagSafe for faster charging.

I got one and I hate it. It doesn’t have USB. It has - I’m not technologically savvy so I don’t know the name - but the plug ins are smaller, they are the same size as the one on my iphone… does that make sense? Is that a thing?

hope it's not tooooo late - you need a usb-c to lighting cable. USB-c is a port, you describe. Please, don't try to reverse it - you could break both sides.

On the 2018 - 2020 Tiguan yes the wire always need to be connected, CarPlay is not installed in the car but is running off of your phone. for 2021 The Tiguan now offers wireless CarPlay in SE trim and up.

I am using a authentic lightning cable connecting my iPhone 6 to a Tiguan Allspace 2019 but it keeps coming up with a message "Unable to connect. Please check whether the mobile device supports Apple CarPlay. Please try again or, if possible, use a different USB port". I have tried both USB ports and also restored the system to defaults and tried again, same error. Any pointers/ideas how to fix please?

Hi! Have you tried deleting the car from the iPhone carplay list? Go to settings -> General -> carplay and see if the VW is listed there. If so go ahead and delete it and then do a hard restart on your iPhone (hold the power and home button down until screen goes black). If this still doesn’t help I would try it with someone’s else’s iPhone. There is a chance there could be something loose or wrong with your iPhone lighting port as well. Hope this helps!

I’m glad you were able to resolve the issues. You cannot get any video to play through CarPlay unless you fool around with the software and modify it to do so.
