Honestly considering the CX-9 is a Turbo 4 and the Acura is a 6 cylinder, the CX-9 hauled pretty good in my opinion. Granted the MDX is bigger and heavier but the CX-9 performed admirably!
@@joecool9739 that's right, the FX look so fresh still. At least outside 😆 interior was typical plasticky even for the time Nissan but the body curves were very emotive and muscular.
@@jay.fromthebay Infinitis in general age well. Same thing with Mazda. The interior is the give away of the real age. I own both brands both look alot newer than they are.
The race from a dig demonstrated how the higher torque output of the CX-9 even with 3 fewer gears allowed it to hang with the more powerful car, but as they approached higher speeds where VTEC's high-lift cams engage and where the extra gears allowed the Acura to stay in the power band, the race become about horsepower...the Mazda visibly tapped-out.
I have no kids and I love my ‘21 CX-9 Carbon Edition 🥰🥰 It’s a better CX-5 to me. Plus, we have a big family, so it’ll be nice to have when they visit/when we visit.
I like Mazda but they are like an overprotective parent. They give you what they think is best for you not what you want. Their six speed skyactiv auto is missing a few cogs and is small for a seven seater
They are going too they aiming to compete with bmw now with a inline 3.0 6 cylinder and 8 speed tranny. I don't now which model will get it first I think the cx5 will with a name change being called the cx50 or something like that I read.
This is obviously very subjective, but agree the MDX borrows some of the proportions from the Mazda, while not the details. I own a 2020 cx-9 and I clearly see the resemblance. The MDX may have cleaner lines because it’s newer whereas the CX9 has been around for 6 years, and still looking great. I was actually surprised when they mentioned in the video the MDX is larger.
Mazda 2.5T has good low end torque and the J35 in the Acura has good top end. Also Mazda requires premium gas to get the full 250hp otherwise its 227hp.
@@RedlineGaming007 I have the same j35 in my 2012 tl and the performance are vastly reduced when you use regular gas and you also get bad gas milleage. With Prenium I average 10 L/100 km wich is pretty good for a mixed of 40% city and 60 % highway driving
It's the 10-Speed transmission that obviously makes the difference...I drive my wife's Odyssey Elite like I stole it and I'm never disappointed in it. I love the VTEC roar.
Mazdas upcoming lineup in the next few years will feature a straight six engine with a new transmission Its actually embarassing how this old CX9 somehow kept up with the MDX in every regard despite being cheaper
With even just 2 more gears... the way older platform of the CX9 would've beaten the MDX. Mazda programed the drive train for real word driving. The turbo cuts off at 4800 rpm... where the VTEC starts to shine!
The CX9 signature has a sport mode, I did not know why was not used. Still the v6 will eventually win with higher overall HP. I love how the CX9 drives…
I was more impressed with the 2.5T of the Mazda CX9. The launches were very impressive. It wasn't surprising at all to see the higher hp of the 3.5 V6 of the MDX pass it up at the end. I would love to know the speed when the CX9 was actually passed by the MDX. Thank you Sam, and great review and race. Keep in mind though, the less costly CX9 Grand Touring model does have 7 passenger seating capacity and doesn't give up much equipment either in comparison to the Signature model.
The Mazda’s turbo helps it jump off the line and keep up at the start, but at speed the Acura’s power, extra gears, and rev range take over. In day-to-day driving at legal speeds they’re probably very similar.
True. Although the ride quality and quietness will still be better in the Acura even for schlepping around town. Sound system too. But, not sure it’s ever worth the price difference for these types of cars/SUVs
Mazda has the engine figured out, now they just need to implement a 10-Speed Automatic Transmission into the CX-9 to make it competitive with the rest of the SUVs in its category
@@drivescene6747 I can see that being the case. However, I'd be interested in seeing more of a price comparison such as the base model BMW and Audi etc.
Hey Sam. Enjoyed this video. Could you please do more videos of the Acura RDX against everything in it's class? I saw your video of the RDX against the Audi Q5. Would like to see against the Mazda CX5, BMW X3, etc. Really enjoy watching your videos. Keep it up!!
You have to push the gas pedal until it clicks in all Mazda since 2013 SkyActiv came out. they lock out the last 10% to save gas with ppl who don't know how to modulate pedal. All 2.5L Skyactiv Turbo also have restricted intske before and after air filter to cut peak power, to save the FWD based transmission life
Sam, I test drove them both and couldn't stand how short the CX-9's driver's seat was. I'm just a little over 6 feet tall. Did you notice this? Also, the MDX was much quieter.
The fact Acura has SH-AWD versus just regular AWD, makes this competition unbalanced. I owned a Mazda CC7 turbo and at the same time my wife drove Acura MDX with SH-AWD and i can tell you the driving, experience as well as the Handling on each vehicle is totally different and unique. AWD systems are all very different for Honda, Acura and Mazda. IMO, Acura has a superb AWD system for MDX
Daniel, great comments. I just got my new 2022 MDX Advance . Whoa Nellie, what a wonderful SUV!!! Agreed, SHAWDY (as Acura's SH-AWD system is referred to), is one of , if not the Best AWD systems out there with true Torque Vectoring. With the enhancements that Acura has made to the drive platform & suspension, the new 10sp AT - Fabulous, new brakes, and digital Cookies , makes this new car probably the best I ever purchased (leased, actually). At close to 70 Years old (October), I feel like a 12 year old at XMAS with a new beloved Toy. I'm retired now, and look forward to washing up , and going out to buy the newspapers in my new Acura. I test drove the Mazda CX-9 in 2019 , almost got it but it was lacking in the InfoT system; and Acura made a good deal on a 2019 MDX Advance. That was the car I just traded in on a Acura Offered Early Lease termination deal with a $1K Loyalty to boot. The Mazda , known as the Poor Man's BMW, handles very well, but I found the Turbo 4 a bit laggy , even though it has tremendous torque. I'm very Pleased with my new Acura and I don't usually use the term LOVE - I reserve that feeling for People / Family......But I really LIKE this car inside and Out!! Got it in the very rarely seen Fathom Blue Pearl with a Graystone Interior. When you look at the exterior in different lighting, the Fathom Blue Pearl cast different sheens of Blue/Black and Blue - just like the Fathoms of the Sea. The Popular Liquid Carbon color will be all over the place..... I was never a Real Crowd Follower. FYI, I really don't need a 3rd Row SUV (does anyone really use that 3rd Row??) , but after looking at and test driving the RDX (which is an excellent car too), I liked the roominess and comfort (the seats in the new MDX are extremely comfortable), even though it is considerably more expensive, I went with the MDX. I said : What the Hell, I'm retired at 70 YO , and deserved it. 3 year lease with 10K miles per year ..... I will end up with a lot less mileage than that... so I will consider buying mine in 3 years.
@@Chiroman527 congratulations on your decision. I owned Mazda CX7 GT 2008 turbo awesome car, turbo lag was ok but a lot of power until the engine my turbo went out and I found out from dealer that engine had internal damage from oil leaks within different areas of engine. They wouldn’t honor repairs, damage was $6k and engine needed replacement. Will NEVER buy MAZDA again as they knew that engine failure was eminent due to poor design.
Seems like current Acura MDX models have less horsepower in comparison to the 2011. I dont tow anything with mine. I do use the 7 seat feature. I can tell you the HP and torque are amazing and when combined with torque vectoring AWD system the system has helped me avoid slippery wet and icy situation in which i pulled maneuvers that with a conventional car, an accident would have been eminent. I own the base mode as i do not like the GPS system and the radio system at the time was not worth the additional money. I own a Honda CRV 2016 EXL AWD but the car has its limitations. My Acura can handle extreme weather road conditions as I travel with the family a lot. Seating position is excellent, plenty of sound proofing in the vehicle and the rear seat is great for the kids and when used by adults is like seating in a limousine. I wouldnt get a Brand new one again as these cars depreciate quickly but i would get a used on for sure. By the way my car gets 15 MPG and highway maybe i can get 19MPG. My car is getting ready for the 100K tune up, water pump, new tires, rotors, brakes and belt replacement service. I am thinking to keep it my car for another 50 to 60k miles and hopefully i can trade it. I would consider getting a 2018 model. I hope u enjoy your MDX, awesome car indeed
Great video. I can say from experience (and as a 22 MDX owner from Jersey, who’s driven to the western states) that if you live well above sea level, the CX9 is the better choice as the MDX 3.5 gets winded at higher elevation. The turbo 4 in the CX9 won’t lose as much steam.
@@mbenton6 the only issues new Acuras have are with electronics, their engines are still as solid as they always are. The J35 in the MDX has won countless awards over the course of decades
@@mbenton6 Chrysler 200 won awards too out the gate but years later did not last the test of time. I will stand by my comment that a small Turbo engine will not last as long as an N/A engine. Especially the J series
This is why it's aggravating to see so many people online criticize the Mazda for not having a V6, that a 4 is not enough. The CX-9 feels quicker than most 3-rows until you are at illegal speeds. Here you see the MDX only pull ahead at speeds that will get your license revoked. I'll take the low end torque any day. That's what matters.
I agree, but Mazda is trying to go up market and make their vehicles compete with the premium brands: Acura, Buick etc. So, in a way, you can kind of compare.
I’m a sales rep in Ontario Canada for Mazda and you’ll change opinion when Mazda comes with the next gen CX-5, CX-9 and also the Mazda6 (gonna have a new name). All three of those will switch to a RWD platform and a turbo I6 will be offered for the highest trims (GT and Signature). That Signature trim will be almost 10k more than what it is currently to really give a run for their money for Acura and Lexus. Every car they produce except the CX-3 (discontinued for 2022) will eventually switch to a RWD layout and will have a bunch of luxury features added (full pano roof, cooled seats, higher quality materials…). Mazda is too small to compete at the bottom with the other Japanese and especially with the Koreans.
I think Mazda should adapt a luxury name plate for there upscale vehicles IE. Honda-Acura, Nissan-Infiniti, Hyundai-Genesis, and so on. I don't think customers are willing to pony up an extra 10k for a Mazda just because it has Rwd and has a nicer interior.
@@billblonco The reason why they aren’t doing that is they do not have the money for it. Mazda is still a small manufacturer. Each model’s next generation will have hybrid/plug in options and they will make more powerful 6 cylinders engines. They know they can’t increase the price drastically one shot, so it will be done overtime. Mazda clientele is a special one in the sense that the average Mazda family revenu is about 141k (Canada), most Japanese brands is about 110k. Our clientele is a bit more educated and makes more money than the average brand, but of course not close to a true luxury brand. From what I have heard on the inside, the lesser trim levels will still keep an attractive price whereas the GT and Signature trim will offer a huge difference in terms of options, built quality and materials to really make it more upscale. We’ll see what will happen but so far the upscale look and feel of the Mazda3 and CX-30 are killing it for us.
Owned a CX-9 signature and than upgraded to New MDX, Mazda is a great car I had no regret buying and owning it, but that said, MDX is just the next level overall, if you can afford it, go get the MDX, but the CX-9 won’t disappoint
It was much closer than I thought, I had all the money on the Acura. If Mazda had a faster transmission and with more gears it might just had edged ahead a bit.
Speaking from experience right here. My wife just traded her 2018 cx-9 for a 2022 MDX. The mazda has a much more usable powerband off the line. Its very noticeable during part throttle acceleration and is much more fun to drive in a city environment. You really feel the torque. The Acura MDX doesnt feel as quick off the line, but the v6 with the 10 speed is super smooth. I would rate the Mazda i-ACTIV awd system as only adequate while the MDX has a much more advanced awd system with torque vectoring. My wife loves her new MDX, but i really miss that Mazda. You cant really go wrong with either. The Mazda is such a good value and the quality is right up there with Acura. The Acura is just a but more refined. Cant wait for mazda to refresh the lineup
@@angusp5515 i believe the CX-9 averaged around 17 mpg city and mid 20s on highway. Just getting out of the MDX i noticed 14.5 city and 22 mpg was the best that we’ve achieved with a long trip. Both make noises in different places. Mazda has a buzzy engine in town, while the Acuras engine is more refined the 20” wheels generate much more road noise on highway. The Acura was just tested in snow and its MUCH more confident; id rate it up there with our old forester.
@@drunkinmaster1 Thanks for your insight. Acura has one of the best AWD system. Im trying to choose between both. Acura is an all new design, but right now dealers are short on inventory and some want above MSRP. With the mazda its seems like there is more out there and pricing is below the MDX. im sure the Acura feels more solid as well.
@@angusp5515 Honestly the Mazda felt every bit reliable as the Acura. We had zero issues with the Mazda and can tell that they put a lot of passion into their work. Personally if I where in your shoes id take the Mazda for a test drive. The AWD system on it will get you by in a pinch, the Acura is just more dynamic in the snow and very impressive
@@drunkinmaster1 yes planning to test drive both, even though i once had a CX-9 touring rental long time ago. I live down south with no snow so thinking of getting FWD.
I have a 2021 Mazda GT which has "sports mode" and its a BEAST. It drives like a sports car not an SUV at all and always turns heads when I take off on the highway. I'm not gonna lie, you will be racing people just for fun with this vehicle.
This show exactly why I GOT the cx9. In emergency, Passing lanes, ramps, etc. It responds precise in those 2 -3 seconds of crucial movements. And feels like a sedan I wanted the highlander 2017. But when i teste drive both, it was easy to jump for the cx9
I’m 6 foot, weigh over 200 pounds and I fit in the 3rd row of our CX9 with the second row all the way back.. there is plenty of room. Only think it lacks is 3rd row head room.
I've got a 2018 CX9 GT-- initially the car pulled really hard. Did 0-60 consistently at 6.9-7.1 seconds with premium fuel. Did a service update on the ECU and noticed the car felt significantly slower. Repeated the test, it's at 7.99-8.2 seconds now, in keeping everything the same (same road as well, no additional weight). Replaced spark plugs at dealer a few weeks ago, same 8 seconds 0-60.. Not sure what's up with it. Drives fine, other than the vibrations at highway speeds. (Had road force done, still persists, another owner reported it may be a bad rear CV from new)
I`m interested to know if the mazda cx-9 was filled with the highest grade fuel for this drag race ? Mazda engine outputs 230bhp on nomal gas and 250 on ultra premium. If not I would request you to try this one again.
Both are nice cars. The MDX from the top view definitely appears to be larger. I don't care about drag racing speeds of either car but I do care about styling, reliability, comfort and resale value. The Mazda comes at a much lower price point but I am a loyal Acura buyer. I still have a 2006 Acura TL that has no rust and everything still works on it except the HandsfreeLink module (phone). I could fix that for $225 but I don't use it. I would be open to test driving the Mazda and doing more research on reliability. Can't hurt to have an extra $15k in your pocket by choosing the Mazda.
Nice race. I drove the new Mazda 6 with the same 2.5 turbo and it definitely scooted. Not enough high end horsepower though compared to others like the Camry or Maxima
So much wrong information. He said the Mazda has an 8 speed. It does not. Mazda does have a "sport mode" he said it did not. Come on people. If your going to try and make money off of YOU TUBE get it right. Also the Mazda has more torque at lower RPM's off the line and the V6 in the Acura ( Honda) generates it's power above 5000 rooms. Could have too you all that and saved you the time but then you wouldn't have made any free You Tube money.
Acura's is Honda's chassis and the suspension. Very rough drive on the road especially battered roads, the Acura and Honda have a stiff suspension. Having owned Acuras and Hondas, I will never buy another one again until they fix the ride quality. On Smooth roads they are great, but any potholes good luck.
They made the MDX heavier by several hundred lbs with the SAME j35 engine. Should’ve tuned the engine to at least 300-320 HP. Should’ve offered a touch screen, which even a Pilot offers being much cheaper, that’ll be a deal breaker for many. CX9 is Big Bang for the buck. But getting the MDX Advance 2 years old when it’s 25% cheaper might be a deal.
We have the 3.5L SH-AWD MDX, but with a K&N filter and air box modded on 93 octane it SCOOTS over the stock set up and 91. I haven't seen anyone tune it yet, or Ktune one. I'm interested to see what the changes would be in comparison.
Do you really think that a wireless charging pad is important in the car and adds to the price? That was the first reason you provided to prove Acura cost over the Mazda.
Mazda more torque off the line but horsepower too low. In high speeds the MDX will pass it. My collegue drives a CX-9, when it hits 70 mph forget it, afterwards you'll be struggling to keep up. But anyways no one is racing these!
I thought the CX-9 would give the MDX a run for its money considering it’s lighter and the crazy torque, to it seems to me the transmission let it down
All I can say is I'm on my 2nd CX9 Tow 3500 lbs easily and haven't changed so much as a light bulb in 6 years!! Brake pads that's it.... incredible little SUV....
Sam, I just got my new MDX Advance. Absolutely really LIKE IT ( I use LOVE for people). Responsive, handles so very well - Head over Heels from my 2019 MDX which was a very good car in its own right , a wonderful ELS , 16 speaker sound system , roominess nd comfort abound. The TTP requires a learning curve, but I'm getting there , hey at 70 YO , it takes me a little longer. Should have been a touch Screen or even better, BOTH. But that didn't dissuade me after I test drove it !!! Acura has produced a great vehicle IMHO, and is a Value to boot compared comparably equipped BMW X-5, Audi Q-7, MB, and Volvo, by far ... And the Acura has SHAWDY , one of the best AWD systems in the business. The new Infiniti QX60 looks terrific too, but fully loaded I think will be more than the $62K (USA), and is behind in the release...
TBH not a fair drag race being a 4cyl T vs NA V6 - MDX takes it on top end but CX9 on bottom end torque! Have to say CX9 kept up with MDX despite being the underdog in terms of engine, tranny, fit finish refinement but better on pricing ($15K cheaper!) impressive for CX9 but you’ve come to expect that perf from the MDX!
