Damn, the old school 3.5L V6 still packs a hidden punch! Great race, having three different generations of the same vehicle makes for an exciting video! Well done Sam
@@kuvyoghmoobamelica6883 it’s old school if the power train is obsolete (at least in the sense of the TLX) which is a pity because it was a damn good power plant.
This was another impressive video...shout out to everyone who made it work especially being able to get those cars stock (without tuning) to verify the difference. As always thank you.
@@dentpulla You keep saying this yet you dont post a link or anything. Don't get me wrong, I know that TL is faster than the V6 TLX but you've gotta back it up.
I owned three 4th generation TLs and one 1st generation TLX V6. Will very likely own a 2nd generation TLX by next summer, maybe in Type S trim. Can't wait to watch this video.
Thanks for having me it was a pleasure, I could have grabbed the new 2021 but after this video I'm glad I bought the 2020 instead. So I literally just want the interior of the 2021 in my 2020.
@@SAT1337 no sir...I have just wrapped the roof and mirror in satin black ....chrome powder coated my alloy rims, painted my calipers and have LED changing lights behind my front grill....even my staggered wheel step up came like that from the dealership.
@@IZRAW Ah ok, must have been the TL then with that intake sound. I have the same car TLX A-Spec SH-AWD though it's a 19'. Did you install those LED lights behind the grill yourself?
@@AcuraPerformance if you look at all the cars that came out during the 4th gen, nothing looked like it or matched its style. Ppl focused on THE GRILL and didn't even talk about the rest of the car which wasn't fair. It had features that cars didn't have and an engine that was on pace with European cars
@@keylkq6207 right? They'd be hating on the car just because of that lol. It's one of those either you love it or hate it. You really have to drive it to appreciate it.
Thank you for seeing the new gen for what it is. It doesn't stand out other than that big ugly grill. Other than that the car is plain Jane. The 4th gen stands out til this day. I still turn heads when they see it switching gears. Ppl pull up and I hit a gear and take off like a 🚀rocket 😁
The 6MT J37 TL was more than worthy of the Type S badge. It was significantly quicker than the 3.5L auto. Unfortunately Acura at the time was going thru a weird identity crisis: beak grille, hiding exhaust tips, testing out an "eco-luxury" image post-2008 economy. So they killed off the Type S badge.
@@msrr1303 better weighing 300lbs more? You swapped to j37 but couldn’t throw the 6 speed in there lol? If your j37 3g tl was 6 speed manual you would change your mind as it would be way quicker than a 4g 6mt
At 0:35 just blows my mind how throughout the years the car became heavier with a smaller engine- less horsepower but with more gears in the transmission. I just wish the engines remained 3.7l v6 with more horsepower either turbo or supercharged. Is it just me or anyone agree?
4th gen ppl gotta stick up for their cars. I don't listen to any bad reviews or critics about "THE GRILL". there is way more to that car. It was ahead of its time and still a head turner for me. When they see the 6 speed monster rocking back and forth at the red light I get looks of confusion because they can't belive its a manual shift until she jumps and takes off. I love the 4th gen and even got the auto sh awd
@@alexismendoza1545 Exactly, good point there! I understand the revised SH-AWD is heavier but the car is still lacking power to weight ratio in my opinion. If they ever make a new ILX « compact sedan » in 2022 as advertised, I hope it’s gonna be max 3200-3300 pounds.
@@DWILSONBR-NOLA false, I've got 4.9s 0-60 timed on dragy. The auto is better if the manual doesn't launch, but on a good launch the manual is definitely a lot quicker off the line.
Agreed. The 3.7L 6MT TL was definitely a sleeper: it looked nearly identical to the 3.5L auto, but about a second quicker to 60 and 1/4-mile. It was the "Type S" of its generation, except only without the Type S badges.
Been waiting for this for a long time lol! Great video! It does seem like in the last race, the 2021 TL Owner lifted early. A well driven TL 6MT SH-AWD should be running high 13's in the 1/4 mile and would be capable of beating the other two. The new TLX 2.0T kept up better than I thought. That 10AT and its shorting gearing may be the key to its launch.
The tlx 2.0 has wayy more torque with the turbo. Thats obvious when you see how well it gets off the line. The v6 cars start to catch up at high speed since they have more horsepower
Correct on the shorter gearing. Despite the 10AT being a torque converter it moves extremely well. Want the complete 10AT swap from the 2.0T Accord and drop it in a Del Sol. FB0, Hondata Stage 2 and the stock turbo. Such a cheat code in that car.
@@EgguEd51 I suspect so, they tuned the 9 speed ZF in the TLX for economy, I mean I owned the TLX, the tranny wasn't that bad, it shifted slow especially in the first 2 to 3 gears, after 3rd gear it was better. I had to reset my transmission, it did a little better but not by much. The 10 speed sounds like it has much smoother shifts. The new MDX with the same J35 but with the 10 speed auto has proven to be faster than the previous gen with the same J35 but with the 9 speed ZF.
@@김동준-t9pno apples to apples comparison. The new one is larger in all dimensions, is heavier by 250-300lbs, and I think the engines is all new. I know the new pilot V6 is all new so I imagine the latest mdx also uses the all new engine. Either way 0-60 and quarter mile performance is almost identical between the ZF A9 and Honda A10. Check out C&D tests between the pre facelift Odyssey in a lower trim ZF A9 and higher trim Honda A10.
Nope, performance would have been identical. Check out C&D tests results between 2018 Odyssey ZF 9 speed and Hondas 10 speed. 0-60 and 1/4 are within .1 second of each other. Even fuel economy is basically identical. 10 speed only shows big improvement when you stomp on the pedal. It's quicker and smoother to respond because its logic is better. But in a drag race you won't notice an improvement. After 8 gears, more gears won't be that beneficial for performance or mpg. For example, 6th gen Camaro 8 vs 10 speed have pretty identical acceleration till 110mph. After that there is a slight difference because the 10 speed has an extra gear to stay in its power band. But again it's negligible throughout the 1/4 mile. Also mpg between 8 and 10 speed are less than 1mpg apart.
I'm sure I am in the minority but I actually think that the 2020 TLX looks better than the 2021. I don't know what it is and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it is the proportions? I don't know. Anyway, great video once again and love that I am always surprised by what you will bring on next Sam! Keep it up!
Its definitely the proportions- I have a brand new 2021 TLX A-Spec and I love it, but the hood is comically long for no real reason, and the previous gen body style was better because it was shorter IMO. I've said for years that Acura could keep the exact same TLX exterior and just update the interior and it would be a slam dunk.
I had a 2020 V6 Aspec and now have the 2021 version. The V6 feels way stronger and I also got better real world gas mileage in it. I miss that engine big time. Overall the new car is nicer but the 2020 V6 is way better. Not sure why they got rid of that engine especially with how it performed with power and mpg.
@@seddyb412 I'm sorry it's just my favorite word to say.i don't like the fact acura let some writers start that grill issue on the 4th gen. It was unfair because sales were strong. Once color matched it evened out the look. This new stuff took no chances on styling. Just plain garbage lol
I am happy with my 4G TL. All I am doing is weight lowering mods. Lighter wheels, better suspension parts. If I can find a lighter hood, that will be good too.
They really don't make a hood lighter than stock. Lots of people looked into CF hoofds and trunk lids but decided to keep it stock due to the price vs benefit.
@@meeralrafee1875 From 2012 I wouldn't say fixed, but improved on the oil burning. It still burns oil but far less. Plus it also might depend on the oil. My car burnt more oil using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for whatever reason. I constantly trying new oils to see which works best.
Still love my daily driver 2012 3.5 TL ,such a smooth ride and rock solid reliable.Bought it new and it still runs like it just came out of the dealer at 150 000 kms, plan to keep it until gas wont be available for public purchase anymore.
@@keylkq6207 yeah but I heard bad thing about the 3.7.They are not rock solid like the 3,5,that being said the 6 speed sh awd 3.7 is more fun to drive for sure.
@@pope9349 your exactly right. They have oil consumption issues that they fixed for free but was hard to do because it was a quiet issue not known. I chose to deal with these cars because other companies are trash in my opinion. The 6 speed has to be driven to appreciate it. The sh awd is so different than other cars that it went unnoticed
@@SManBlueLizard any 4th gen is a beast. Keep it my friend. They don't make em like that no more unless you want a dial instead of a gear shifter. Acura scared to be different now. Real conservative look on new gen. Doesn't stand out like 4th gen
No one should be surprised. C&D got 5.2, 5.7, and 5.9 for the TL 3.7 M6, TLX V6 AWD A9, and TLX 2.0T A10 AWD for 0-60 in their tests. Quarter mile times and orders were in the same order
I think you should listen the new Type S lol, it sounds waaay better than these cars, not to take away anything from these cars, they all sound great tits just that the new Type S is on another level.
If you had someone who could drive manual, The 2010 would have destroyed the 2020. Looks like he blew the shift at the end of the drag race and if he would have launched it at 4000 rpm it wouldn't have even been a race
2010 is my favorite. I remember being in high school thinking that was the best looking car. Now 10 years later, I still think it is an amazing looking car. it has aged very well.
@@AcuraPerformance way way ahead. You put the new garbage next to it and matches up almost the same minus a few new toys but that's it. Other than that I wouldn't even trade up for the new one. I'm just gonna keep my maintenance up and keep it unless they do another 6 speed
3.5V6 NA is just way more fascinating than boring 2.0 turbo, in every aspect from power to smoothness to exhaust note! Can you add Lexus ES in this competition?
LOVE IT!!! So interesting that there's such a small difference between these three generations. Please do Type-S comparisons next!!! 2004-08 gen Type-S vs the 2021 Type-S.
Btw the new type s would completely leave the second gen type s (not second gen of the TL, but the second gen of the TL type s they made) in the dust. The type s back then is pretty much just as fast if not slower than the last 2 generations of the v6 ASpec and this generation’s 4 cyl. It’s kind of like how integras and legends today aren’t fast but they sure were fast 20 years ago
So clearly the 4G TL is faster than the New TLXs. The driver clearly slowed down at the end of the sport mode race after being almost two car lengths ahead.
@@AL-ib9yc I think he meant the 2.0t in the new TLX. Your 4 cylinder has a k24 with the dct, excellent combination, that 8 speed dct is lightning quick

The race between the 2 TLX's is really j Is exactly what one would expect, the sloppy 9 speed vs the new 10 speed and then the horse power of the V6 passes the 4
@@ljpr360 its a ZF10 even then honda is still using the ZF9 on all there Trucks and SUV's acura should have put more R&D in there DCT 8 that was on the ILX and 4 cylinder TLX thats an amazing transmission.
First of all I think you guys are geniuses for using older models with newer models , I really enjoyed this video , but I think the fact that the 2021 tlx only has 4 cylinders it's at a big disadvantage against 2 v6 cars even tho it's newer .. can't wait to see more videos like this 👍
Great comparison. you’re doing something that nobody else is doing with racing different generations of the same model. That’s a nice comparison to see and if they made the new generation faster or not. But I like the 4cyl in the new generation.
The new 4cyl is enough for the car is aiming for. It ain’t no race car. Even the type s is slower than anything in its segment. Great looking car all around
I picked the TLX 2020 to be the overall winner. I purchased a new 2010 TL Tech SH-AWD (don't ever recall there being a 2010 A-SPEC, and it looks like the one featured here was wearing aftermarket exhaust tips/finishers) with a 6spd manual and replaced it with a 2019 A-SPEC V-6 SH-AWD after the TL was totaled in a collision caused by a 16 y/o. As fast as that TL was, I believe that even though my 2019 is rated with less horsepower and has a slightly smaller engine displacement, that the 2019 is quicker. I've driven the 2nd gen as a dealer loaner and as much as I like how quick it is, displacement of the V-6 over the I-4 turbo, along with the 2nd gen's heavier curb weight, I felt would prevail.
I am looking at a 2019 V6 A-Spec/Tech...anything I should be aware of or to look for? This one has 40,000 miles and is under the recall where I believe the engine will be replaced...
As a 2012 TL 6MT owner, I been waiting for this race so thank you ! I raced a couple of the new TLX on the street and beat them so I'm sure this one can do better.
I still have my 2010 6MT Shawd, its all in the driver's heel and toe that would make a difference in the drag race showcase here. No doubt that auto has faster shifts, but a V6 will eventually will blow a 4 banger. Good video.
