2021 Aprilia RS660 vs. Ducati Supersport 950S

There’s a certain romance in having a sporty motorcycle comfortable enough to ride the long way to a racetrack, participate in a trackday, then bee-line back home on after (or continue taking the long way, if you’re hardy). In reality, true sportbikes are terrible streetbikes - and even worse touring bikes. Conversely, a sport-touring bike is great at taking the long way to the track - and some are even respectable on said track - but ultimately leave something to be desired when the pace wicks up.
Splitting those differences are the motorcycles we have here: the 2021 Aprilia RS660 and Ducati Supersport 950 S. Sporty in nature and design but with a nod towards creature comforts, both Aprilia and Ducati are rethinking sportbikes for the more sensible among us. Outward appearances would tell you both bikes are in for a good time carving corners, but when you peel back the curtains (or fairings in this case), what lies underneath is what happens when people who don’t have professional racing contracts realize piloting 200-plus horsepower superbikes is downright scary and exhausting.

Only thing I don’t like about the Supersport is the price. No reason the S model should be that close in price to the V2.

They have a similar number of parts, and the SuperSport doesn't use bargain basement stuff so component costs are going to be similar. The SuperSport is also well put together. Peak power doesn't always relate to purchase price.
@Dukerdr
@Dukerdr 3 года назад
@Drone Strike They don't have a 955cc V2 with high zoot Ohlins, so you need to compare the cheaper 950 SS to it. And a standard 950 SS is still as fast as, and more comfy than an original 916. A great deal.

v2 has no Ohlins option, that for me is enough of a difference in price

@@mikeprzyszlak5242 Is Ohlins really that big of a difference over Showa (or KYB or whatever the PV2 uses). Maybe if you're chasing tenths at the race track, but for those of us on the street 99% of the time?

I bought my RS660 two months ago. After doing first 300 kms I got first "check engine" light. That was quick fix with via the throttle calibration. Then I did 1st inspection and after software upgrade cruise control didn't work anymore. Then at 1600 km it literally died in the middle of the street. I was able to start it later but with limited power and "check engine". Exhaust valves have to be replaced. It has been at the shop for the last 4 weeks and I have no idea when I will have it fixed and back. 10.500 EUR is a lot of coins for such a nightmare reliability. I really regret buying it.

Update, now it has been more than 3 months and my RS660 is still not fixed. They need to replace the exhaust valves and so far it was not possible to deliver the parts. However Aprilia lended me Tuono660 for the time of the repair so I am not suffering that much.

I got the SuperSport S when it first came out, '18 I think, been riding it for some years now. I rode it on the track 4-5 times also. I love mine, it is exactly what I am looking for, but everything they said about the bike is spot on. It excels at long swoops (just like they said), give me long curving roads (like, Route 143 to Tellico Plains) and I am in heaven until end of time. It is just sublime, the balance, grunt of the engine, smoothness, confidence, and most importantly, comfort. It looks amazing, is sporty but allows you to spare your back after 3-4 hrs. of spirited riding. Although it won't embarrass on the track, I really don't think it's good for the track (for the reasons they said). Too low foot pegs (in addition to exhaust). My toes kept scraping the track, and even if I tucked my foot well, the peg did, or the exhaust did, and it is just scary.. Not to mention, it is just way too pretty and expensive to use on track. There are other issues with it, for anyone serious about buying it, quick shifter is not exactly 100% reliable (especially on up shifts), the throttle is way too jerky and moody when the bike is cold, mirrors vibrate too much on the highway (maybe they fixed these issues with newer models), but, overall, I absolutely adore it and am happy as a hippo every time I am on it.

Cruise control IS a great reason! I find my right arm, chest and shoulder getting a tad sore after a long leg of a road trip on my non-cruise control equipped bike. Given the Ducati's mission/purpose and its price, lack of cruise control is a borderline inexcusable fault.

@Lorin Sanchez no one ever said there was a long history of it. But you’re acting like the Ducati Supersport has the same purpose of an R6. They don’t. The Ducati is meant to appeal to street riders who want comfort and convenience while still being in a sporty package. And for $16k it would be nice to have cruise control. The RS660 Got that right. If you don’t want CC then great, be happy about the lack of the feature. But it’s not silly to wish CC was included by Ducati on this particular bike.

Very fun comparison guys! The general points and contrasts you made seem about like I was intuiting. I've owned a '18 standard Supersport for the last couple months which I think motor-wise and chasis-wise is the same as this '21, except for the high end shocks on the '21 S. It took me a bit to get used to the bike after having a speed triple as the Ducati doesn't turn as quickly with its longer wheelbase and it just kind of felt a bit wierd compared to what I was used to. But after gettng used to it I really like the way it steers and there's something satisfying about the thrumming motor. It's surprisingly comfy somehow and and it's punchy enough for me at 61 - and like this tests notes, its not scary fast. Where I live in Northern Ireland the motor suits the rarely straight, rarely super tight, rarely flat roads and it's fun to be able to hold the throttle open without going into hyperspace mode. The Aprilia seems like a cool bike too but I've heard, don't know how true, that parts might take awhile to get depending on where you live. The SS can also take factory panniers that hold 50L and factory heated grips if thats important to you. Finally, I'm surprised the test didn't mention that the bars pinch your fingers into the tank at full steering lock. Character :-)

I wouldn't mind a ducati and I like a lot of their bikes too but a lot of their bikes have a couple things I don't like. Like naked bikes where the engine is completed covered in plastic and wires. Or like the streetfighter you look out over the handlebars and see absolutely nothing but road. Seeing an instrument cluster or a headlight and a little fairing is like seeing the bike's personality to me. Also horrible foot peg position. Every aprilia I've been on just feels balanced to me. Maybe a little less cutting edge styling but more usable for riding. I don't think this is a fair comparison. Nobody's comparing a RSV Mille 1000 with bar risers to an SV 650 which is kind of what this is. So what if the riding positions are similar. Ninja 250 probably has a similar riding position........

The RS660 is 'close enough' in intent, performance, and design that if one is budget-sensitive, it's the clear winner... but if you're buying just one motorcycle, and ascribe to the 'buy once, cry once' mentality, then the Ducati is simply the superior machine - I've been up close with both, and the RS 660 frankly looks a bit like a cheap plastic toy next to the Ducati, whose premium price does come with some things (a better-integrated IMU, Ohlins, etc.) that justify the cost differential, not to mention a better dealership support network in many countries.

The big bummer for the 950 is the lack of cruise control. It's crazy that Ducati did not put this simple function on this bike. My guess: wait for the 2023 model and it will have cruise control. Then, it's the winner.

Funny how an Aprilia 660 twin keeps up with a Ducati 950 because Ducati wants to tone models down so folks buy the bigger one....Time for Ducati to bump up the Supersport to bury the Aprilia (which they easily can).

There is a counterpoint. I ride a BMW F900r and it's by far and away the best bike I've ever owned. Everything about it genuinely makes me a better rider. But, I still find myself wanting another 50hp.

I'd love the aprillia, but the engine quirks werent fixed with the rods, still leaks alot, hope ducati decides to update the supersport to the new monster frame and engine in 2023 and it will be a major contender with the tracer 9, and then well see if yamaha maybe updates the dash, but even with that, the ducati looks so much better, and has the better electronics, well see, gonna be a tough choice.

For me it is simple: Ducati stays Ducati and it must not be better in all discipline. Why are people buying for example cars that are well known not the best… because they have a soul and living with this soul is more as any feature or last part of perfection can give you. The Aprilia is lovely too and looks great. For me personally it is too sporty and the DUC is sorry but with touring characters and the sound and punch in the midrange is awesome 😎

If these were the same price i would be torn, but the price gap is enough to steer towards the aprilla. Strong chance ill be picking one up.
@KellerFkinRyan
@KellerFkinRyan Год назад
if you’d be torn if they both cost like $11k then thats ridiculous. the rs660’s only two advantages is weight and the cruise control. quite literally everything else is better on the ducati. especially the full ohlins suspension on the ducati, with the upgraded brembo brakes. the aprilias got brembos but they’re the cheapest ones that they had in the parts bin. seriously, if you can afford the aprilia, you can save for a little longer and get the ducati. i cannot stress enough how much better the ducati would be if price were not a factor.
@Adeus555
@Adeus555 Год назад
@@KellerFkinRyan Price was a huge factor. Picked up a Tuono 660 a few days ago. The RS was a bit to tight for me. The ducati was twice the price. Easy choice for me.

Exactly. Year 2000 CBR600. Cheap and very comfy sports bike that does 150mph extremely reliable and simple servicing. (Take note Ducati servicing and spares availability is shocking) . No electrics or abs though. R6 if you want more uncomfortable but sharper bike.

You should have thrown price into the mix. Because for the same price Ducati is obvious winner it's just much more bike for the money. But if you have to pay 2,3, or $4,000 more for the Ducati, the Aprilia start to look much more attractive.

@fatsharks 3 года назад
Yep. Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, and BMW have huge reliability issues that no one talks about. Of course it's fun to blast around on a press bike for free for a few hours, but try to live with these bikes for like a year and then we'll talk. I don't care how "sexy" these Euro bikes are. They are overpriced, overrated, and unreliable heaps of junk. I'm neither stupid nor a child so I will never buy one of these Euro bikes until they sort their shit out.
