The 2021 Honda Ridgeline is the perfect pickup for those who want to have their cake and eat it, too.
No, it doesn’t have the outright capability of a traditional truck, but it counters with SUV-like comfort and drivability while retaining an open bed, decent towing and payload capacities, and some seriously clever storage solutions inside and out. Push past the sticker shock, and this is more than enough truck for the vast majority of tasks, not to mention the vast majority of buyers. AutoTrader.ca Road Test Editor Dan Ilika says he was surprised by Honda's small truck, and walks through the reasons why it may surprise you too.

I recently asked myself, “what do I actually need out of a truck,” and because my needs have changed over the years I just traded my Tundra in for the Ridgeline. So to elaborate, I don’t need to tow more than 5000lbs anymore and I now work out of my truck which means all the tools that were in my black seat can move to the lockable trunk. I can now carry the family around in a clean cab and still do all the hauling I need for work while saving significantly on fuel.

I'm on the same boat. I have properties and I will haul drywall lumber etc for the occasional renovation. I was about to get a tundra but I am seriously starting to look at the Ridgeline now. I think a lot of it is psychological, for example people don't want to be seen in a Honda truck but like the big, muscular body on frames. Is it practical though?

Out the door i paid 42,000 for my 2020 rtl ridgeline, 100 mile commute 5 days a week and had it for a year now, all around great truck and features, like the bigger cab, and the in bed storage is one of the best ideas. Everything I used to lock in the cab now goes securely in the bed storage compartment out of sight. Whether it's my work box or luggage it has a secure home. Good job Honda.

I just ordered a 2022 Ridgeline RTL-E, as I no longer need a full-sized pickup, and I must say that I am trading in my Tundra. I liked my Tundra except for the 13-18 mpg. I test-drove a 2017 Ridgeline and I was immediately sold. However, I will have to wait 150 days for delivery 🚚😟 of a new Ridgeline.

I liked since the first time I saw it, but it's ridiculous overpriced & the upgrades still doesn't justify the price. In my opinion, Honda could it snach the heart of Toyota by going full size. A full size version with the actual asking price would it be a killer.

Notice this is the Canadian channel, the US price is "lower" as they are quoting in their currency, and this test is one of the higher trims. I am picking up a new 2021 Sport (the base) next month which is being factory ordered for me and the price is $36k US. The top of the line Black edition in the US is around $45k US.

Hi Dan, With the new lightweight trucklettes from Ford and Hyundai, is it possible the Ridgeline is too much truck? ;-) To be serious, a wagon, CUV or minivan teamed with a utility trailer is a much better solution for most people.

I’ve driven the Santa Cruz but not the Maverick at this point, but I can say that the Ridgeline is noticeably larger and more spacious inside.
@mgp9733
@mgp9733 3 года назад
The Maverick and Santa Cruz don't compete in the same segment. The Ridgeline competes with the Tacoma, Colorado, Canyon, Ranger, and Frontier. If you are looking for an SUV you probably wouldn't be too interested in a truck.

Timing belt , no center armrest , push buttons in the center console area ... wasted area ... needs a deeper bed .... needs a bit more rear leg room .... needs at least a 5.5 ft bed .... needs an engine update with 300 hp 300 ft lb.... needs better infotainment system .... do all these tweaks and Honda could have a real winner !
@clarkkent9080
@clarkkent9080 3 года назад
he Ridgeline was originally at the top of my list. However, the 2021 only comes in AWD and unless you live in the snowbelt, you are paying $3,500 more for something you will never need. The real deal breaker is the 3.5 liter interference engine with a timing belt. Honda is the last manufacturer to use timing belts. So Honda wants the buyer to pay $1,300 to change the timing belt (and water pump is recommended) every 60-100K as "normal" maintenance? The info system and push button shifter says cheap all day long. Sorry Honda but a real truck can be had for thousands less.

The current 2nd Generation Ridgeline 2017-2021 AWD System is Honda IVTM4 It's Torque Vectorng AWD System mechanically simular to Acura Super Handling AWD System. But it's programed differently than a MDX or RDX. The Ridgeline Pilot Passport all have the top of line AWD System. Not only for snow also aids in cornering on dry road twisty curves a on ramp at speed. Also towing FWD only tows 3,500lbs with AWD it adds heavy duty Transmission Cooler increases towing 5,000lbs So in mud dirt road sand slippery boat ramp you would use this AWD System as well. Plenty of RU-vid videos explaining this particular AWD System. Previous 1st Generation Ridgeline 2006-2014 all came standard with Honda VTM4 and they have 4WD System simular to 2st Generation MDX. The FWD only models of Ridgeline weren't selling well that's why they canceled that. RU-vid Acura SH-AWD vs Honda IVTM4 AWD System Best example and they have plenty of videos of Passport and Pilot demonstration. As this is not like other Honda AWD Systems

@@rightlanehog3151 I don't understand why anyone would think it is ok to have a significant "normal $$ routine" maintenence item on a vehicle today. It addition, I do not want half of my engine bay disassembled and hope the mechnic remembers to put it back together correctly. Honda (VW $800 transmission flush required after warrenty/free scheduled maintenance runs out) is not the only manfacturer doing something like this. I just want the consumer to be informed that all other manufacturers switched to chains a decade ago and they can make up their own mind if they are ok with the expense.

I so wanted to like this truck, in the end I couldn’t get past the 1998 interior . For the price you can buy a lot more truck and still get better fuel mileage. Honda needs to stop sweeping the dust off it every few years and just bury it out back. They obviously couldn’t care less about a product!
