Napolean actually tried to fool the robot by choosing white instead of black. The "robot" apparently showed anger and cleared the board and Napoleon thought it was funny and put the pieces back on the board himself.

Imagine setting up this rig for a performance, and telling everyone afterwards that actually they weren't playing a machine but your assistant, and so you open the back and he isn't there, and shows up an hour later saying "sorry, I was stuck in traffic, I'm ready to begin now" what would you think?

Pay no attention to the assistant that always disappears during the game.
