@@Xdev1lG00D Yes, it is as I had said. Hyundai has another dct, that's a 7 speed with two concentric dry clutches, that is almost as slow as manual shifting.
Unless you're on a track, there is absolutely no reason to use that DCT in manual mode for straight line racing. It's faster letting the car do it. Also I always hit the NGS right before I hit the pedal, not a bit before hand. Seems to work better that way. Just my experience so far with my Elantra N.
I have one, and I be with you, in the straight line don't need a manual mode, and that is true about the NGS is right before hit the pedal, also I don't like to used the lunch control.
I bet the N feels faster in daily driving conditions. I used to own a type r and it only felt fast on top. City driving it was a dog and no fun. The N seems more fun.
The N series is run by executive engineer for bmw M series cars. As anyone knows the M series are not designed to be the fastest cars but fun daily drivers. Speed does not translate into fun, if you want fast get a tesla roadster it will destroy both of these speed wise
I have a 21 sgp type r. Stock i ran a 2018+ mustang gt (460hp) from 80 to 130 mph and matched his speed till we saw traffic ahead. I dont condone that kind of driving but it interesting how fast the type r is in 6th gear. The aero is truly functional.
@Bry Zeer that's the point. Compare manual to manual, auto to auto. When the trans are different its just another variable. Also dcts are automatics, no need for "auto". There's a reason some sports cars only come stick. Kinda wish the veloster n didn't get an automatic if they had the elantra n in the pipeline
@Bry Zeer it's a super car. Sports cars would be like a miata to a supra. In this case, the supra has an automatic. Or the hot hatches that mostly came in stick only, think sti, Evo, focus rs. Or dedicated sports cars like the s2000 which is only available as stick. There are sporty and great performing vehicles with automatics, and there are less than great automatics. You'd be hard pressed to tell me a charger scatpack (which shares the transmission with the supra) is a 4000 lb sports car.
@Bry Zeer bro Google something. No one calls dct cars dct. They are called automatic. Look up that gtr that you bring up "6-speed automatic". There's nothing wrong with an automatic like you make it seem but a 911 is hardly a sports car nowadays either. The cars you talk about being "sports cars" are not meant to be over 100k. A mustang gt? Sports car. A gt500? Not a sports car. Golf gti? Not a sports car, it's a hot hatch. Idk why you think sports car means fast? Miata and brz are not fast but are the pinnacle of daily driver sports cars. Porsche 718 is a sports car In manual or auto. If you can't drive stick that's fine, but it's not an excuse to classify whatever you want as a sports car
@Bry Zeer civic sis are not much faster than a stock civic anyways. But I'd call a civic si a sports call 10/10 times over a r35 gtr or new nsx since those are supercars (luxury and performance focused)
Sam again thank you and everyone for helping bring this video together. The manual transmission off the roll race really was a bit of a surprise considering how much better these automatic transmissions are getting.
Automatic is future like or not this true and Manuel die die slow by time and soon the stop use accept that in ur mind don't be ignorant Manuel person ok

He whas manuallyshifting the elantra . At 60mph he upshifted right before the drag race. Starting in tho high rpm, also the civic seems to start earlier on the pedal. Just like he could not launch the elantra from standing still
Yessss Sam thank you for this video! Both cars are fantastic and fun to drive in different ways. EN with the dig and the CTR has the clear better top end and roll advantage. Would love to bring my DCT up across the border here from Michigan sometime to do some videos with you.
Need both to race at the Nurburgring, that is where the Civic will shine. We all know the Civic does fairly well there so would be interest to see how far behind the Elantra is to give more of an idea how much better the Civic is as a sports car.
The Type R's turbo also pulls more at a higher RPM. The Elantra N has more torque and HP at a lower RPM, you could see it on that race where the Elantra took the launch but the CTR was slowly catching up
@@gordonharris5788 well to be fair its a lot harder to launch a manual properly/consistently compared to a DCT. But i would agree the type R makes power up top. Having said that the N still traps 107mph in the 1/4
@@nighthawk0077 launch on type r is shit , i have one and cannot launch it hard you get wheel hop and if you keep you break something , so youhave to let go and apply throttle again , my fk2 lifting in 1st gear run 13.00 quarter mile and 2.2 60f with a trap of 112mph. im sure if it could launch properly would get down to 12.4 sec ( mine has bolt ons an a map nothing major)
Appreciate you guys doing these races, sometimes I don’t want to hear everything about the car I just want to see a good race and see who wins. I appreciate long reviews but these are awesome as well.
Damn! The Korean car market is killing it. This is coming from a Japanese car lover. The Type R may have won the runs, but I can't deny that the Elantra N was right on its rear bumper. I never thought I'd say the day when Hyundai would fail to remain cordial on the raceway.
@@NSUScooter Isn't there a class action lawsuit against Hyundai & Kia for excessive oil usage? Plus there's the whole spontaneous combustion issue that continues to plague the brands, and let's not forget engines randomly losing power and dying for no good reason. Yeah really top equality stuff.
When doing the rolls, your NGS feature is already off by the time you get to speed since you press it so early. Also, I believe the manual is gonna keep up MUCH better in the rolls compared to the DCT auto. Still crazy how much car you're getting for under 35k an with a few minor upgrades it's gonna be hard to stop.
What do you mean when the Dodge SRT4 came out it was $1995 and would probably spank both those cars or give um a run for the money 13.6 at 99mph with a good driver and to a bad driver at 14.0 1/4 mile time. They want us to pay for garbage what a joke
I have the 1.6t 2017 sport and best car I’ve ever owned looking to get a n now 60k and just tires and brakes you know no problems at all I’ll never own another car without a dct
@Adam Chapman Thanks for your opinion... I already posted mine. Every major vehicle brand has had the same or more in recalls in the past couple of years. Look at Subaru for January of this year. 198k+ for trans failure. Hyundai/Kia still offer 100k mile 10 year powertrain warranty that they honor. No one else does. If you don't like them, don't buy them...
@@SamCarLegion yes but one has 6 gears the other one has 8 and is automatic, the automatic is obviously easier for the driver side, at the drag strip with the DCT would you use paddle shifters?
Thank you for doing 100kmh/60mph rolls its a much more reliable speed to race at to avoid gearing slowing the car down (especially when you learn how to put it in the right gear)
@@trenton.tchannel1810 honestly, mop the floor is an unfair thing to say. Elantra N doesn’t really deserve being undermined like that. Specially when it’s as competent as it is. What I meant was I expect the next Type R to further that gap. But again, Elantra N did very well.
@@msrr1303 the new and old type r was made to break track record, the elantra N was made for being a fun car in the street while already being a track focused car.

The races are pretty close. I also cant decide which car won the "who is uglier" contest. I dont care how quick they are, I wouldnt be caught dead driving either one.
And this is only in a straight line. Take into consideration the Type R performance around the track and we can see why it is the benchmark to beat overall in this segment. The engineering of the car is impressive.
@Adam Chapman Think whatever u want. Type R may be faster only on the straight road haha. On the track? Tell Type R to beat veloster n first! Now, whats the real shit box?
@@user-yh7be9fk6m LOL the urge to find and kick your face in for saying that, whether your joking or not you did not just say the Hyundai will beat the Honda on a track😂. Although, they are stepping it up recently. Just not enough. Thank you for the laugh 🤣
More HP + 6 speed manual + rolling race = civic type r Type r is actually fast in rolling race because it's more easy to gain power than a full stop drag race.
it's not really the HP difference as you can tell on many dyno vids. But it is definitely a power to weight ratio for sure, the type r is a good bit lighter.
The Type R does have more top end you can tell in the second run it was catching up even from a dig it will win in a longer run still the new Elantra N is impressive comon Honda give the Type R a Dct or a ZF transmission now even Huyndai is doing a great job now with there new line up with Dct transmission option

Finally, a video that I've been waiting for. Thank you, Sam! Bravo! Another great video and great match-up between the Elantra N vs the Civic Type-R. Amazing results. I can see you having trouble with the initial launch of the Elantra N.... Hyundai designed its own DCT and it does not like hard launch of its transmission. Probably to maintain its longevity/reliability. Also, when driving in a straight line, no need to do a manual shift on a DCT. Regardless, great job on the friendly matchup. For under $35k, the Hyundai Elantra N is a lot of car for the money. Respect to the Civic Type-R... a legend and great car.
Solid solid stuff. I had a feeling the N would take it because of how well the owner was launching it. Wish there was more pops and burbles included from the N cause in person they were sublime
Yes I own a 21’ CTR, and holy fuck it’s horrible. You spin first and 2nd gear and won’t hook till 3rd and you can’t just dump n go you have to not throttle the gas all the way you just have to now to not make the car bounce
Gotta give props to Hyundai….The N division is building quality cars at a great price point. People love to bash them…..but they keep on getting better.
@Adam Chapman I bought my '12 Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec brand new in 2011. I've had ONE serious problem with it in all these years (and I drive hard). When I did have the issue, I took it to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty with zero hassle. Maybe I just got lucky, but I have no complaints about Hyundai quality.
@Adam Chapman they get 100k miles warranty I don't know what you smoking but those are great cars. I own 2018 elantra sport and is a blast to drive it. not like my older 07 bmw 335i but gets similar vibe.
@@oemj7147 lmao from a dig in a straight line, who cares, from a roll the Type R still has the fastest 60-120 time in the segment. Also, you're comparing a car that came out in 2017 to a car that literally just came out. The old CTR is faster in every regard, track etc. Now if you want to shift gears with a paddle like an idiot sure it'll beat it in a 1/4 from a dig. Same reason an automatic Mustang beats manual Mustang, so what. But whats crazy is that we are even still comparing the FK8 Type R to all these new cars that just came out, to be fair, if you want apples to apples, we will have to compare the 23 Type R, and when it comes out, and it too, will take the world by storm, just like the FK8 did.
Why are you LYINY? The MK8 GOLF T R Drstroyed the type R on a roll. From 6-120. And it further destroyed it from a dig giving it a 10 second lead. Stop lying
And nobody cares about track. You are likely to use 0-60, 1/4 and trap speed etc as performance metric than track. 90% of type R owners them self don’t track. Car and driver has chosen the previous GOLF R over the type R many times. The golf R is the king of hatches
@@sharktin240 🤣🤣🤣🤣 said NOONE EVER, nobody in their right mind has ever picked the slow azz Golf over the Type R, and there is NO VIDEO of the manual Golf beating the CTR from a roll. Did they not even use N mode for the exhaust clip? Sounds like normal mode. Also, the answer to how the MT does against the type R, the answer is: Worse.
Yeah, unfortunately it looks like the 'Normal' mode exhaust clip was used. We recorded N mode as well, but I guess brevity was an editing consideration lol
@@n2productions Listening to the video, it sounds like normal mode was used, I didn't hear any of the N's signature pops, nor did the exhaust really have the aggressiveness that N mode usually gives it. It's obviously a video and won't sound like it does in person, but it just didn't sound right.
Coming from a Honda Civic Sport 2019, I was looking to upgrade and my options were the type r or elentra n and I went with the N simply due to the price point with the crazy mark ups. MSRP 22 type r going for 58k while elentra n is 42k (Canadian).. 15k difference but you guy a car thats underrated at 286hp its def pushing 310-320 to the crank (there videos of stock N being dyno'd pushing 282 whp) with 15-20k you can do alot and still have lots of fun. Had my N for about two weeks and its amazing , exhaust sounds awesome, already got a few runs and safe to to say bang for buck you wont find a car at this price with this much power, let alone the customization options are amazing. Im a huge honda fan and always have and will be but hyundai is up coming, along with the 5 year engine/turbo warranty its safe to say im happy with my choice. Also love that it comes with manual and dct.. If type r came in dct it would be really interesting on a dig with the gulf.. Type R and Elentra N are the leaders for FWD technology.
Both great cars. At 3:00 though, that reaction time is long enough to honestly cut the whole race. Not much learned there. I initially thought maybe it was the car's throttle response but you can still see the brake lights on so it's driver error. Loved hondas forever but the Elantra is out for blood in this segment.
Kind of tough to compare based on this vid because the Type R got a head start first race but then made a sandwich on the 1-2 shift at 4:27 (you can watch the palpable loss of acceleration the R had on the way to second at 3:57). Then the first roll seems solid but the second the Type R really got the jump at 6:23. So it's like combine that with the whole NGS button and launching business, and it seems like a race would be better had between drivers with a little more seat time in each car. But I guess that also kind of represents the real world if you encounter one another on the streets (of Mexico haha). Electronics are finicky to manage, shifts get f'd up, pacing get jumped, you kick yourself for riding the rev limiter, etc. Would love to see an on-track comparison and also how these cars times will compare at autocross this summer (I think they are in the same class to boot). My friend with an Elantra N tells me it loves to playfully oversteer and is a handful, but a good handful when the back end likes to slide a bit and it's practically yelling at you to mash the throttle! My R stays delightfully neutral even when the laws of physics say it shouldn't.
@@sidelingscroll Yes, I think it's safe to say our buddy Sam (is that his name?) can't drive very well. Those brake lights at 3:00 when the CTR is already gone is hilarious. And the missed shifts, oh man.. Yikes. Sammy had a bad day.

Hello Sam, thanks for your videos and since you have the possibility of being able to face these cars, I would ask you to face the Hyundai Elantra N vs the Kia K5 GT in a drag race the next time, since they basically have the same engine, the same front-wheel drive and a very similar power, it will be very good to see these two cars from the great Korean manufacturers compete.....greetings!!!
I bought my first Honda after they became official PU suppliers for Red Bull. Since then I m enjoying my Civic hatch and always wanted to buy the Type R but due to lack of transmission choices, never was. Looks like Honda is gonna be lazy with next gen as well. Well done Sam, I wanted to see this comparison since this N was launched. So thank you and looks like I have found an another RBR fan 😄
Yea max verstappen had a hell of a season too last year beating the one reigning champion Lewis and the redbull honda taking the title win from Mercedes
U can learn how to drive a manual . It’s more fun because you learn the engine better , aren’t relying on programming that people complain . A lot of people who drive manual can tell the sped and rpm without looking at the speedometer .
The Type R has auto rev match. You don't realize how easy it is to drive manual with that feature. Defintely wouldn't consider Honda lazy, mate. Does 3 pedals confuse you???
Im not a huge fan of the hyindais design but i love the accents and upgrades. For the price to have a affordable practical fun car to drive with almost 300hp i like it
On Run 2, did the Elantra N driver use the NGS button -- it doesn't look like it. Also, at launch, was traction control turned off and was high RPM rev around 2300?
@@SamCarLegion Thanks for confirming, Sam! For the Roll 3.... it looks like the NGS button was activated prior to launch?? Per Hyundai, NGS is suppose to be activated when in motion and not prior to launch.
