I am torn between which one I would take. To me reliability is more important than anything so Tundra would be a natural winner but the looks and performance of Raptor is not easy to ignore...
I know exactly what you mean. As a diehard, Toyota fan, I was hesitant of F150 Raptor because domestic brands in general were not known for their reliability. However, after driving the Raptor, I was blown away by its performance, comfort, and excitement.
For the long run go with reliability. Toyota might sacrifice some perks that ford gives but in the long run and you don't want to run into issues always go with Toyota
Nice video. I traded my 2021 Tundra TRD PRO in for a 2022 Raptor. Raptor came from the dealer with a rusted diff, brake lines rubbed the front tires under full lock, and on top of that my Turbos blew up at 1600 miles. Sold the Raptor and about to take delivery of a 2023 Tundra TRD PRO. I’ve seen enough from Ford to never want one again…
Sorry for the late response as I was busy with multiple things yesterday. Wow! Man, they sold you a lemon. I wonder if the previous owner had totally abused it or was it like that from factory? I am glad that you're back in the Toyota camp. Toyota's strong suit is and has always been their reliability record. I know the 3rd gen Tundra had problems with the turbo wastegates but overall it's a great truck and those issues have long been addressed. Best of luck on your new rig man and enjoy your weekend!
Hey Buddy! If you had to pick a vehicle that's great for off-roading but also good for daily driving and even long road trips, which one would you choose from these? 1. Ford F150 Tremor V8 5.0 L 2. F150 Raptor 35-inch package. 3. Ford Bronco Wildtrak. 4. Toyota 4Runner Gen 5 TRD Pro. Or if you know of any other options, I can spend up to 100K CAD. Oh, and by the way, I just checked out your RU-vid channel and I loved it! Thanks, man!
One great feature about the Tundra is it designed to run on 87 octane, you can use higher but there is no point. All the other performance trucks require high octane gas and that adds up over the life of the truck.
Great video. Sorry this is gonna be a long post. I bought a Tundra TRD Pro last year. It felt great for the first few months but then i started to really notice a few issues that does not give me confidence. 1) The hybrid regenerative breaking system makes an awful high pitched humming noise when stepping on the break (worst at low speeds) that i had checked out. I was told it was normal. That started about 2 months ago (ironically when it started to get cold here in New England). 2) Some interior pieces just aren't up to par for Toyota. The center console had a plastic on plastic rubbing issue that caused it to squeak loudly (was able to DIY fix it with spacers). The plastic on the drivers side seat is a ticking time bomb with breaking every time you get out of the vehicle (already have a small crack). Had a drip of water coming from inside the truck from the rearview mirror when it was raining rather heavy (not sure what that was about). Though the infotainment system is new and screen is large, there is really not much substance to it. Also virtually no customization...to me it's kind of bland (where is my weather map???) 3) Fit and finish issues. Found a loose finishing screw that was rattling around in my moonroof...no idea what it goes too. Molding around the rear side windows is loose in places where i need to continuously check it. Lots of creeks and rattles...i'm anal about stuff like that. Once i hear it that's all i can hear. 4) Wind Noise...when i had the radio off i started to notice wind noise from the side windows and the moonroof when everything was tightly closed. Please don't get me wrong here, I really like my TRD Pro. the good thing definitely out way the bad and i know i might be sounding nitpicky here. But because of some of these issues i started to question if this is worth dealing with long term. I came to the conclusion of NO. Therefore, I have my name on a 2023 Raptor that is coming to me in a few weeks. The Raptor has always been my dream truck anyways. Thanks for listening:)
I totally understand your frustration and am sorry for the late response. Besides being a RU-vidr, I'm also in a dental profession and a business owner. Yesterday, on my 40th birthday, I had to get a root canal, and those shots to the roof of my mouth were hard to forget... In regards to the Tundra TRD PRO, I totally understand your frustration about the issues you mentioned as far as noises (regenerative breaking and wimd noise), big screen navigation that's not customizable and loose screw... I do like the Raptor more as a daily truck (better seats, driving, looks...) but I am not sure if Raptor's engine and transmission can hold on or be near as good as Tundra's. Regardless, if you're planning to only keep your Raptor for a few years, you'll most definitely love it. BTW, I'm a few months shy of getting my Raptor R in Code Orange as well...
I am a diehard toyota fan. But issues like yours seem to appear on the TRD PRO. My local dealer marked up the TRD PRO. I decided to look at the 23 Raptor. I am happy with my decision to go that route as well.
I know. They could have done better in the rear seating. Also, underneath the F150 Raptor's rear seats, there's a decent size cargo area, but Tundra TRD PRO has placed its hybrid battery...
I definitely agree that Tundra's front and rear bumpers are far inferior in quality and lack tow hooks in the front as well... however, long-term overall engine, transmission, electrical... would be in favor of Toyota.
Agree. But with a new v6 format we will see if Toyota can maintain its quality. But I doubt it. You can’t survive and compete if you build quality vehicles these days.
@Rocket fuel tbh in 6500 miles, I didn't have any issues but that's nothing compared to my '97 4Runner 5speed (265K miles), '07 Sienna (248K miles), '12 Prius V (195K miles)... so we'll know in the future how reliable it is... at the same time, Toyota needs to sell as many vehicles to make profit and I'm sure the quality won't be as good as the '1980's, 1990's and 2000’s cars
Fun video. I own and have owned every Toyota just about, and now as a 2024 Raptor 37 owner, it’s night and day. Ford makes you smile. Everything about it is designed to make the customer happy and excited…Toyota punishes their customers with inferior everything except drivetrain. I will take my chances on the Raptor, life is too short to drive boring cars.
Both trucks had few options, with F150 Raptor being $79,250 and Tundra TRD PRO being $70,250. They are 2022 models, and similarly optioned 2023 models are higher.
Thanks for the review. Now I know that the Tundra has better long turn reliability, Raptor is more comfortable. If like that, I like Tundra more, because I will pay less for the maintain and repair in the future.
You're most welcome Andrew! Yes, I'd definitely stay with Toyota if you're solely looking for long-term reliability but Raptor is a very fun and exhilarating truck to own and drive.
So you are thinking the reliable will be better. Lot of new things for Toyota on this TRD pro we will see! The tipping point for me when changing from my 2016 tundra was the lack of underwear storage and head room in the back seat. Just completely deal breakers for me I am LOVING my ‘23 Raptor, that saying I did buy the extended warranty and maintenance 😂
Raptor is a performance based Baja truck with long travel suspension and bigger wheels that is different than the regular F150. This makes it not being able to tow as much.
@Viktar Tuleika wow. That's phenomenal man. I believe you. I had the same issue with one of my previous Toyotas. I'm glad that you're getting that high of mpgs Viktar
Lol. I understand. I love the F150 Raptor. I just got a Bronco Raptor, and the review should go on the channel soon. They drive much better than Toyotas
I know. I wanted to as well. But I couldn't at the time and I've sold both of them. One of my friends bought the Raptor and he lives an hour south of me. I might come across a 2023 Tundra sometime, and if that happens, I'll definitely do an offroad test.
@@radridesbyehsanshirazi8779 would need to be the pro version, but yeah, would love to see it. Would be good for viewers if you held the trucks a little longer and do more reviews. Im sure its a money thing, but would be better for your channel. I really dont have reason to watch the channel anymore now that you have sold both trucks.
@@gatordunn I totally understand your point as it is valid. I do reviews of vehicles that have significance in the automotive industry and history (brand new, slightly used, classic...) on my channel but am not focused on doing multiple videos of the same cars. There are other channels for that as we both know. I will still have several TRD PROs on my channel like my '23 Sequoia TRD PRO that will be featured soon. I appreciate your feedback regardless because it is helpful.
Hi Virg, I know the 3rd gen Tundra has had its issues, but I can say the same about Ford's problems with reliability. As far as looks and driving, I'm all in for the Raptor.
For me the easy answer would be the Tundra, I just wish Toyota would figure out their issues on it.. It's a first model year, so obviously it's going to be a shit show. Maybe a 2024. Resale value is still pretty insane due to the rarity of the TRD PRO trims, on top of that the SO color. As someone who also owns a SO TRD PRO, I know how stupidly hard it is to get one. Love the video, thanks for the upload!
I totally understand where you're coming from since I've owned and loved many Toyotas, but F-150 Raptor was the winner in my opinion due the reasons I mentioned. I do hope that Toyota gets the issues sorted out soon because they're known for their reliability. Thanks for your comment and enjoy your beautiful bad ass SO Tundra TRD PRO David and Happy New Year 👍
I really want the new tundra but idk how to feel about them taking away the V8…I want my first truck…I want the 250 limited super duty or the raptor but it’s to expensive 😅😢… should I save for a raptor or super duty or tundra…and I heard Toyota are so reliable…is is still reliable with the new V6?
I understand your situation as I was in the same shoes. Our 2020 Tundra (2nd gen) had the 5.7litre V8 but the 2022 Tundra has the 3.5litre V6 TT Hybrid. However, the power delivery, tech upgrades, 360 camera and many other factors makes it a great truck. As you know, the F150 Raptor (not Raptor R) is also a 3.5litre V6 TT, however, it is just a blast to drive. F250 Super Duty, F150 Raptor and Tundra TRD PRO are all expensive but if you're planning to keep the truck for a long time, I would definitely go with the Toyota because of their reliability record that is overall better than the Fords.
I do love the Raptor in general (ride quality, looks, exhaust, performance...) but Toyota's new 3.5 litre twin turbo isn't so bad. Yes, it had some issues at the beginning, but they worked it the kinks. Only time will tell of course.
OK, I Got the 2024 trd pro. ad lift kit 3' and 35' ko2 $5000 ...so Looks factory, like supposed to came out like the raptor. runs and drive great, MPG went down to raptors levels. 12-13 mpg. I still have to spend $4k more or more to replace the rear bumper and front middle one to get the recover points " like supposed to from factory" and erase the funny fake sound from the speakers...still looking for a nice option for the new exhaust. So...for the amount of money you need to put on this to meet the level of the raptor...definitely the raptor is the better factory option in my opinion.
The Raptor 37" msrp, is over $100k... I'm like $80k on my Tundra...so I have $20k more to improve ...if I want... and built a Raptor killer...off road or any road...
Gabo, I feel your pain and frustration. I agree with you that a) Tundra TRD PRO should have come with AT LEAST 35" wheels b) better and MORE REAL exhaust system like Raptor's Trombone system... Having said these, I think a) you one BAD ASS truck that can travel pretty much anywhere and b) it will be more reliable and have higher resale value in the long run. I know Toyota had issues with Turbo wastegates on 2022 Tundra TRD PROs like mine, but those bugs have been worked out. Let me know how the progress is on your build as I wish you the very best! Happy Holidays btw.
12-13mpg in the eco boost raptor? That’s a bit off. Are you using the recommended premium fuel? I have a 2023 F150 Raptor 37 with eco boost and I’m getting 15-17mpg around town with premium fuel.
I did use the 93 or 91 octane gas but I think I had too much fun with it every time I drove it. You are probably a more conservative driver than me. I sold this one but should be getting my Raptor R soon which I am very excited for.
Yes, both the Solar Octane Tundra and my new Solar Octane Sequoia win the cake... they just look badass. But, to be fair, Raptor is a beast of a truck with great driving record, comfortable seats, and much better turning radius.
How close is the code orange color to the solar octane? In the video they look almost identical, but I’ve seen the code orange raptor and photos/video don’t seem to represent the color accurately. I’ve heard it’s the same for solar octane, but I haven’t been able to see one in person. Just wondering how the 2 compare.
@Mike Quigley Code Orange is a lighter version of orange, whereas Solar Octane is deeper orange with metal flakes in it. Hence, Solar Octane is shiny under the sun and, in my opinion looks better. I hope this helps Mike.
Thanks! Very helpful. So frustrating that we don’t have the ability to see these/test these before buying with today’s market. Definitely appreciate your video!
@Mike Quigley no worries. My pleasure. I agree with you. Dealerships don't let anyone test drive these specialty vehicles, and that's sad, especially for someone who's willing to spend all of that money buying them.
I love the raptor and want to get one in the future but now you got me looking at the TRD PRO , it’ll be a daily driver by the way, great work by the way
Thank you so much for your feedback. They're both great trucks, but as I've stated in the video and comments, I'd take the Raptor. I love the Tundra TRD PRO, but it lacks in several important categories, and this is from a diehard Toyota guy.
I know that Toyota doesn't have the bells and whistles as the raptor but for the long run always Toyota. You might enjoy the raptor for a while but you can enjoy the tundra for the long run. The issues that there having is normal especially for new gen vehicles but it's Toyota and theyll take full responsibility and even most likely fix it for free.
I totally agree. I've had my share of Toyota and currently have 3 high mileage Toyota for my warehouse business (Sienna, Prius V, and Tundra). They're very reliable, and Toyota does fix their quality issues, especially when the model and engine are new and bound to have few issues. Raptor wins in the fun factor department but definitely not in the reliability, which many consumers look for.
