Nissan deserves a lot of credit for persevering in the full-size truck market. Their truck is on a par of features and performance with Ford, GM, and Ram. I love the 5.6L V8. 400 HP, 413 lb*ft of torque makes it competitive with any V8 out there. It's too bad that the 5.0L V8 Cummins diesel didn't catch on.
The V8 Cummins was not a good motor. Many issues which you can discover on the forums. Nissan and Cummins support is dying fast. For the engine weight, it was under-powered and a fuel guzzler. The I6 6.7L beats it in all categories including fuel efficiency.
@@freedomisntfree_44 i would take titan over F150 in any configuration. I was financially able to choose which truck to get and Titan XD was on top of my list.
If I was in the market for a mid-size, I think the frontier would be my pick. v6, no turbos and 9speed. Not a fan of the turbo engines and the Tacoma seems underwhelming.
really it is a good truck, and you probably would want it over the Tacoma for a bit of more power, and it is not a bad truck at reliability, however, if you are the type of person that would want to keep that particular truck forever, go Toyota, it is by far the best at reliability, and it is approximately the same base price, but the Nissans are not that bad, so it is really up to you to decide
Frontier is a main pick of mine as I will be replacing my truck within the year. Looks, V6, better driver side seating position rear disk brakes, better infotainment.
The Ridgeline does not tow well IMO. I had a 2019 AWD. 3000 pounds is all I felt it could comfortably tow. The transmission temps would climb alarmingly high when towing 3000 pounds and it would shift quite a bit.
My 2022 Nissan owners manual says that the frontier pro 4X is rated at 6270 lb towing, so technically you were overloaded on the frontier. It did a phenomenal job!
I think the last 4.0 Frontier they tested was a 2014 Pro4x. Pulling a 5,700 lb boat up the Ike it was slower than the new Frontier with 6700 lbs. The 4.0 was a great motor. Would be curious to see how the 4.0 would work with the 9 speed.
I understand this is about the Frontier but y’all continue to short change the Titan. Test it with the same 8100lbs you have been testing all the other half tons with.
The average age of cars in the US has been going up, and surprise surprise looks like US dealerships are in for 2021 being the most money they've ever made in history. I don't understand, just don't buy a new car right now, people must be bored, spending 64k Canadian on a Frontier, IS INSANE, I should be working at a dealership selling cars, providing no service to the world but padding my condo portfolio in new Mexico.
One of our parts guys at the Chevy dealership I work at bought a Pro-4X Titan after the transmission in his Silverado blew, the Titan is definitely an underrated truck
The torture test I used to see for the titans really caught my attention. They would purposely drive it at an angle and even directly into a curb. You would see the truck bounce and jolt but still drive away.I’m sure folks figured we can make a vehicle extremely strong but the squishies inside are the limit.I have a friend who always raves about Rams safety ratings which for me if your not an idiot and don’t abuse your things everything should last. I’ve heard of rams steering being car like which I think should be really popular with all the old ladies. . . . Hahah no but I imagine it is easier and smoother but a little more delicate. The truck also doesn’t have the auto start stop function which I like.
Nissan deserves more credit, im a Chevy guy who drives a NISSAN. I'll admit it had some growing pains, probably built on a Friday, but its a solid TRUCK and for what u get dollar wise, leather loaded around view monitor, you can't beat it.
I’m a Chevy guy and Toyota guy. my first truck was a 2003 supercharged Tacoma beast of a truck. My second truck was a 2011 Silverado Z 71. I’ve had many trucks throughout the years Toyota and Chevy. Currently own A Chevy 2500 and a frontier. The new Tacomas are shit. I’ve had 4, a 2017, a 2019, and 2 2023 pros. This Frontier pro 4x premium is a better truck.
Remember they didnt dwell on it, but this is a Pro4X, which is an offroad oriented trim. Pretty decent results for something not really set up for towing.
I just bought a 2022 frontier, had a Tacoma for 6 years. I like the frontier better. It in my opinion has a better engine and transmission .I also like the feel and the way the frontier drives.great truck as far as I'm concerned. Would highly recommend.
I honestly saw the new age titan as being the second best truck after the tundra and with the tundra loosing the V8 I can now say the Titan is my favorite truck now with ford being 3rd or 4th
I’ve said it before, but I would really love to see a comparison of the “old” Gen 2 Titan with the 7 speed vs the new Gen 2 Titan with the 9 speed (drag race and towing). Same with the Frontier, but the old 4.0 vs the new 3.8.
@@occckid123 The gears must be really spread out in the 9 speed. They had to gear down to a 3.69 to achieve similar results as the 7 speed with 2.93 gear ratio.
@@bwarren228 the gears are shorter but it's still slower than the 7spd. I believe the titan is almost 1 second slower than before to 60mph. I could be wrong!
@@occckid123 I’ve heard similar, but haven’t driven a 9 speed Titan before (I own a 7 speed). I still want to see it though, but I somehow doubt Nissan wants that comparison to be made.
@@occckid123 you are correct however these trucks are not built for 0-60. for example the duramax L5P 6 speeds are faster 0-60 than the L5P 10spds because less gears to run through, however the 10 speed is smoother, better for towing, more efficient, lower under drive and higher overdrive. Race a 10spd vs a 6spd from 60-100 with a trailer, the 10 speed will win every time. They are built for a purpose and 0-60 isn’t one of them.
Love my new Titan XD and my 18 Armada too. I just wish that i had option to get front bench seat in pro4x trim. For me that was a must, so i got SV. Other things i had to have in a truck: v8, NO statr stop garbage, NO cylinder deactivation and NO premium fuel ($0.50 per gallon for no real benefit, NO thanks.)
So refreshing not having start stop and other nanny's lighting up our dash isn't it! I love my 18' SL midnight edition. It's basic and such a solid truck. Seems like all other trucks have an overwhelming amount of nanny's...
We currently have an ‘18 frontier, we’ve since bought a travel trailer. The frontier pulls it, plenty of engine and transmission. Stability on the other hand, is in question. Im currently debating between a Titan XD, and a ram 3/4 ton. I’ve test driven the big threes 3/4 tons, and the XD.
When you're just maintaining 60 MPH and other traffic is blowing past you in the empty middle lane @16:30, that's your hint to GET OUT OF THE PASSING LANE.
The one thing Nissan has nailed down is trucks. Dang they make good trucks. Well, we also have a 07 Sentra with 230k miles on it, which I know it’s not the norm because never had issues with the engine or CVT.
Tacoma requires 5000rpms on the ike gauntlet and everyone complains and calls it weak (mr truck actually had to back off several times on the throttle to prevent going over speed) but the frontiers running 6000 rpm here foot to the floor and ya’ll are like “what a stout little truck.” not to mention that Titan needed 4000+ rpm too. ya’ll are wack. 95% of you should be driving a honda ridgeline
I love my 2021 Titan S Base Model! I’ve basically turned it into a P4X minus the locker. Oh and you can install a tekonsha p3 brake controller in the frontier in about 5-10 min so not a big deal and it’s a better controller than most OEM
Unless that's very soon, I think it will be a used Titan, as Nissan has already discontinued the NV vans (which share the chassis with the Titan XD) and it appears that Nissan is discontinuing the Titan and Titan XD.
Personally owned 3 Titans just sold to purchase a 21 trd pro the Titan is way under appreciated the one i just sold had over 200k sold to a family member still running strong not one single problem not one oil leak my other one had 375,000 miles and was still running without any problems great trucks
@@BrokeSpaceLaser i’ve always wanted a TRD pro Fox suspension BBS wheels and with it being the last of the V8s that’s why not interested in the new TwinTurbo six cylinder and for whatever reason the Tundra just has a way better resale value but like I said the titan is an outstanding truck would never speak badly of it out of the three that I have owned not one of them ever left me stranded or give me any problems I have owned plenty of Toyotas as well
@@gsrport1 Aw cool! I can completely understand that. I have heard pretty good things about the 22 tundra. But I understand wanting a V8 over the turbo V6. I was just curious as to your reason, but I get it, if I had the money I’d do the same, but I just bought a 22 Pro4x Frontier.
325,000 miles on my Titan and still runs perfectly. I will look to the Frontier as my next truck. Nissan makes one of the best motors you can buy. You might get a nicer and maybe little more roomier interior out of Canyon or Colorado but this Frontier will out last any domestic truck by decades!!
That is pretty impressive for the Frontier. Of course probably would not want to do this daily but if there’s a need once in a while, that’s pretty darn good.
I paid 49k for my 21 pro4x Titan and it’s dealer price was only 52990 so prior to Covid this was the cheapest set of trucks to buy on the market but nicest interior outside of a ram or updated ford
2020 Frontier Pro4x awesome old school look, with the new 3.8L v6, 9 speed sweet tranny, 5' bed, body graphics, roof rack, bilstein susp, leather seats, oh man an INSTANT classic when I got it. There are a few others out there but this one is mine! The midsize truck category has many fine entries in the field, and Nissan with the Frontier is a reliable, good looking, fun running, value proposition. Body on frame, a tough cookie, and a kick ass ride. Whats not to like?
Why NOT Do a Back Seat Test.. As an Outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter, Contractor, Family guy with 4. The BACK Seat is the PITS on new trucks. They all suffer from the lack of usable storage area. With a grand in Fishing rod locker box that used to fit behind the seat in my old truck Now I gotta put them in the bed and Loosing space in the Bed for other things like gas cans and food, tents etc. . These new trucks are the pits for daily use and for multiple use lifestyles. One Weekend We're putting Life jackets and Kayaks in. The next one or season Snowmobiling in winter with Helmets and snowsuits. These New trucks are as usable as a Car with a big trunk. No One Wants to loose usable space. Ever put a life jack behind the back seat with kids??? Wait you can't on these new trucks. A 4 foot level behind the seat?? Oh you can't. A gun case for Hunting in fall and bring the kids.. Oh wait YOU CAN"T. Something all new trucks lack. Is usable space inside the cabin.
I'm curious what the difference is between the old truck with new motor compared to the new one.... and of course see it against the other Japanese truck the Asian taco.... I think the Nissan would be much better
Excellent, have been waiting for this to air. Gives me some peace of mind regarding towing heavier loads on occasion with the new Frontier platform. Max I’ll be towing is around 5K so will have a comfortable margin. Ordered a Frontier a couple weeks ago and looking forward to it when it arrives once built and shipped.
This new frontier is a game changer. Always the cheaper choice in the midsize market but great value. Now up there in performance and looks as well. Maybe eat up more tacoma market. Absolutely more reliable than the GM and Ford competitors. Gladiator is a niche truck style. So it’s basically the frontier vs the Tacoma in the consumers eyes if looking for this midsize truck in USA 2022
I’ve yet to understand the purpose of downhill brake applications. If your not using cruise then the truck doesn’t know what speed to try and maintain. It comes down to rolling resistance. So one please explain what I’m missing. Thanx.
Some transmissions look at brake applications, speed, throttle, etc. input to determine if the truck is speeding up even though the throttle is at 0% and the brake is being applied. Particularly when the transmission is in tow/haul mode the computer will downshift to increase engine braking and reduce the tendency of the truck to speed up downhill. The cruise control doesn't factor in at all, but the transmission (and maybe engine) computer still can know you are trying to slow down or your are descending a hill. The IMU and help too.
It’s a long range downhill performance test excluding the wheel brakes. If the tow vehicle is requiring many brake applications, you have a higher probability of overheating the wheel brakes, all other factors held constant.
Agree. I wish they would manually downshift so we'd know what the truck was capable of rather than what it's programmed to do. Most all of us would control the gears manually in that situation.
Andre you guys should start keep track of the 35mph to 60mph times for all the tests. I feel like this is very important for people that tow understanding a hard acceleration on a steep on ramp and how the truck handles it.
I found in my Titans they didn’t have as much engine braking as you would expect but on the flip side, it seemed to rev up nearly as quickly as a Lexus LFA
I've had my 2022 pro 4x in tactical green for just over two months now. It's been dead reliable and Nissan seems to have amazing build quality. I am stepping up from a 2018 civic hatch so I was obviously expecting an increase in my spending on gas, but I've gotta say the Frontier has impressed me with its fuel economy. The best I've had it, while driving is 8.4 L/100km, and after a trip is 9.0 L/100km. I have also been able to get a projected fuel range of up to 760km from a tank. All in all very impressed and can't wait for the many years ahead with my Frontier!
@Glitch rush just keeping positive chief. We are all aware of the issues that have plagued some of the other new vehicles that have been released lately. 👍
if U could, keep me/us informed, looking for my next new midsize this year to update from my 98 Dodge Dakota 5.2l since a new Dakota seems to be dead issue
I like it. Frontier looks like a stout little truck. With that, I've got to wonder if the suspension isn't a little stiff for off-roading. A little more flexible suspension would help off-road maneuvering but may not be as compliant with a heavy trailer. I don't think you buy a midsize though to pull 6000# all the time, so why not set-up the suspension for a little more movement.
Because when you aren't towing you have your dirt bike or other cargo I'm the back. Real pickup owners have to truck for a reason, to carry something back there!
The suspension is stiff on the older ones, and not even the Pro-4X versions. I had an SV and thought both the suspension and the steering were a little too stiff. But that said, you get used to it and then don’t give it much thought. My 2014 was such a beast it went anywhere and everywhere in just rear wheel drive. That was the most impressive feature to me. Had 4WD that was literally never needed, and I’m talking about miles and miles of driving in 8” snow (43 miles one way to get to work) on roads nobody else had driven. Also off road in sloppy mud and sand. Used rear drive only, and on stock tires, it went everywhere. It was just an unbelievable performing truck.
Tacos will probably will probably decline in quality since their production is moving to Mexico leaving a spot for this truck to possibly move in and fill it as all around bang for the buck truck.
Why don't you guys have the same constant when you're doing your testing ... Use the same trailer with the same amont of weight For all your midsize trucks.... And that's just one example
The biggest problem Nissan has isn’t its style at least on the frontier that is or its reputation, it’s the marketing. There simply isn’t any. As a result, there is no mindset in the consumer as to what the frontier represents. It is by far a much more superior truck, than the Tacoma. And now that the Tacoma has given up the V6 and gone with much more complicated, twin, turbo four-cylinder, the Nissan frontier has a golden opportunity in terms of marketing with it normally aspirated V6. The advertisement opportunities are endless and priceless. I hope Nissan does something with this.
As a loyal Ford owner, I am now looking at the Frontier for a daily driver. The prices of half tons are insane and my brother just purchased a Pro4X Frontier and loves it. I keep my stuff a very long time and am going to start test driving the Frontier SV. The value is insane and would tie me over for nearly a decade until I needed to upgrade back to a 1/2 ton for towing, family etc. Your insight is spot on. I will never sell my old F-150 which is heavily modded or my equally old Mustang, but it's time for a new daily driver that's not 20 years old lol. Utilitarian, basic NA V6, reasonable mpg and seems solidly built. The marketing just sucks. But that's good for pricing. Sub 40k for a 2wd SV Crew Cab long bed. That's fantastic when a base F-150 Supercrew STX 2wd 5.0 is literally $50k+ and doesn't even include a power seat....
Dodge, we need a Dakota with a V8 again. I have an 02 with the 5.9, just waiting for them come out with a new one! That gladiator is selling really well, that platform would suit the Dakotas return. 👀
Thank you, How do we save the Titan, It came out before the full size Tundra, but can't keep up. Think about how many car brands there are? We need to keep the competition at peak. Save the Titan.
@Mike my experience has been dealership employees know the least about the product. I have owned 7 Nissan trucks. From Hardbodys, a couple of Frontiers and my current DD 13 Titan. I tow heavy with my Titan fairly often. It never complains. Been a excellent truck.
@Mike the reality is people like you are unwilling to try it you just assume it’s not good. My truck still sits on the same platform as the current truck. My truck still has a excellent 5.6 that the current 5.6 was born from. I’m not saying they are the best truck but they are definitely a great option for folks that want a N/A 1/2 ton gas V8 truck.
If you had to choose ANY model of Nissan Titan OR Frontier, in any high-altitude location such as Colorado, Montana, Alberta, British Columbia, Alaska, Yukon or super-cold winter area such Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont, Michigan, Upstate New York, then a used Titan XD or the Latest 2022 Titan SHOULD be your choice. If you are coastal California, Washington state, Oregon, Vancouver, BC, or in a summer hot New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Florida then the Nissan Frontier is the better choice due to the smaller size and better newer engine technology saving you fuel/maintenance costs. ALWAYS buy a new Nissan truck on extended financing because you tend to get enough deals on them compared to Ford, GMC, Chevy or Toyota that the money you save paying out monthly on extended 72 month financing still leaves you enough left over monthly that fuel and weekend trips are far more affordable than the other trucks. It basically means you get MORE out of your truck on the weekends and daily driving meaning more PERSONAL FUN TIME out of the Nissan trucks than the others because you SAVE more money per month which can be put towards your weekend fun camping/fishing/4x4 time. When you compare trucks between the major manufacturers, you MUST categorize yourself into a specific financial band BALANCING the looks, fuel costs, maintenance costs, resale value, hauling/towing ability and 4x4/off-road capability versus your monthly payments or outright cash outlay. If you WANT a mainstream U.S. truck, then any of the three North American majors will do for mid-size, full size or heavy duty trucks. They are ALL powerful, tow and haul a lot and financing is not outrageous. If you WANT high resale value, a Toyota Tundra/Tacoma is hard to beat but damn expensive on a monthly payments basis. If you are younger and just started in your trades career and need a weekend warrior truck AND a daily tool/gear hauler at a good affordable monthly payment, a Nissan Frontier looks good and so does a Chevy Colorado ZR2! If you want PURE high-end interior comfort AND good hauling/towing ability then the RAM 1500 Limited is Numero Uno right now! It's expensive but it sure has near-Mercedes Benz level of interior luxury and technological creature comforts. For the BIG toy-hauler and fifth wheel trailer haulers, then the Ford F-450 Dually is the hands-down the winner on the longevity/maintenance-free count due to its commercial-class axles and frame rail construction. The best all-round full size hauler would be a Ford F150 Powerboost which does everything good but not totally spectacularly class leading. The price is right when you get a mid-optioned FX4 or Tremor version around $55,000 USD or under. It best balances interior comfort, hauling ability and off-road use in one truck at a decent price. That 7200 Watt on-board generator also DOES make a BIG difference for your worksite and campsite tools/electronics charging and powering. If you need a 7 passenger family hauler, I actually suggest a Stellantis/Chrysler Grand Voyager well-optioned mini-van which has LUXURY AND person-carrying capacity that is easy to get in and out of AND can take your family to the local parks and beaches in sheer comfort! V
Andre you messed up when you said Nissan went a little higher displacement with the 3.8…..ummm no….they actually went down on displacement….they went from a 4.0 to a 3.8….so yeah man….
Great truck, i do have 2019 titan sv 4x4 and I loved, i hope they keep the v8 in the future and don't make the same mistakes that tundra with not v8...
I understand about the tundra not keeping the V8 i see what yoy are saying. But with or without the V8 the tundra in Any configuration from 2022 forward will outperform and outlast any truck from nissan.
@@putmeincoach7663 but that drivetrain has been around since 2015. Those turbos will fail eventually. But there are multiple vehicles in the lexus line with the same engine with high 200k and one over 320k with a failure at 321k. So ues they will eventually fail but most likely you won't own the vehicle when the mileage is that high most Americans don't. And yes as much as I would love for the tundra to keep the 5.7 or bring over the lexus 5.0 thos is the way the market is going unfortunately. Nissan too will have to find an alternative to their V8 engine. And it will more than likely be a V6 twin turbo or supercharged With that being said there is no life where I would choose the titan over the tundra. Ever...
@@derakbell8143 True that a forced induction engines will outperform a NA one. However, that’s the issue that I have with the new Tundra. That’s all they’re offering, a forced induction engine. They’re taking away our choices, and if I wanted a forced induction engine, I’d just turbo a V8.
I traded my 19 ranger for a 2022 pathfinder. Get the frontier. The v6 and the tech and looks alone are better than the ranger. The current ranger just felt so cheap to me. I’m loving my pathfinder and I loved the ranger, but I would go with the frontier. Unless like you said your wanna see the new ranger will look like
There's no such thing as "narrow wheelbase": wheelbase is the distance between the axles, so if it's not very long it's "short", not "narrow". The term you needed was "track": that's the lateral distance between tire contact patch centres.
I love this videos. I was in the market for the Frontier back when it first came out but once I got in it, it was quite small and cramped. So I ended up getting the Titan. Either way I love both trucks.
I think they were being too critical. It looks like the truck hit the line right when he said stop the first time. They didn’t need to add the extra 2 two tenths lol!
I can understand docking points for the safety chain hook being so hard to get to. I can also understand docking for not having a brake controller. But I don't agree with docking cause it didn't grow. It's supposed to be midsize, not full sized.
The Nissan titan would’ve done a lot better in the marketplace. If it didn’t get hit with the ugly stick. And extraordinarily capable durable awesome truck that looks incredibly awkward.
I have had 3 Nissan trucks and all were completely reliable. Over 200k miles on each and never had a trip top the shop.I don't really understand why they get so much hate especially from people who have never owned one. I have driven tacomas and they are really not great trucks power ride and uncomfortable seating position.
I don’t think it’s the toughest test do the test in the middle of summer at 90° days middle of the winter you’re not getting the true torture of these trucks temperature does make a difference on transmission and oil temperature
With the way gas prices are going id say midsize. The midsizers can tow what the old 2005 V8’s could tow all while getting better MPG. The midsizers are pretty comfortable places to be in unless your big/tall/or overweight.
Less than a enthusiastic thumbs up for the Frontier! Missing a brake controller nowadays in tow package is a bean counter move. Besides an important safety feature. Really Nissan?
As a 2011 Frontier Pro4x owner in CO, I really wish Nissan had a factory tow pkg option with a brake controller. Even at a premium, I would rather have that installed and warranty then have U-Haul do it. And they are the other 3rd-party I could find.
First of I like all your test videos, real world testing, not just some dude in shorts driving around the block and giving it a doug score. I bought the Frontier SV model with the convenience/tow package and wonder why Nissan didn’t include a brake controller either. I will have to buy a Prodigy brake controller since I plan on pulling a 3500 lb camper with it. I previously owned a ‘09 Frontier since new and have no doubt I will keep my ‘22 for 10 years or more as well. I like the comfortable seats, the handling and ride and the heated seats and steering wheel. The thing I don’t like is Nissan deleted the cargo channels on the bottom of the bed, I used them all the time to strap down lumber to. No other manufacturer had these as far as I know. Also the control switches on the lower left side are too far down to see, if Nissan raised the display panel about 2 inches they could relocate the switches below the panel. It would be an even better truck!
With the gas engine it would just be slower because it's heavier - in these tests they don't really test anything other that grade climbing power and engine braking. With the diesel might be interesting, but the Titan is apparently being discontinued so that's pointless now.
