@@thomas8421 Not sure about that, Berlin area is not exactly known for it's car manufacturing know-how. Eventually quality will be good, but I do expect first batches to have issues
@@curioussand1339 The Berlin factory is Elon Musk’s flagship factory using all new automated manufacturing technology to build the vehicles. It’s an improvement over Shanghai which is still one of the most advanced automotive production plants in the world. The Berlin factory won’t be depending upon German vehicle manufacturing know-how. It will be 100% US designed technology. The German Tesla employers will just be running the systems.
FYI for temperature and volume you can slide your finger left and right to adjust with a slider instead of tapping. That might address your concerns with the ease of adjustment.
I’m in the UK (London) ordered a Model Y Long Range in Graphite grey with black interior and the 20” black alloy wheels. Literally the car you tested here, this just confirms VERY happy with my colour choices, car looks awesome😁😁
Don't be too sure. Chinese team have proven themselves. Early German MODEL Ys will be same 2170 batteries and early production of a new factory always has problems. Shanghai has ironed out their issues. It will take another 1 to 2 years for German MODEL Y to have 4680 cells and perfected build.
9:09 The reason why Tesla’s Infotainment system is so responsive is because they have access to the best software engineers (Facebook, Apple, Netflix, Google, EA and more) in the world and it’s easier to headhunt a software engineer within the Bay Area than from the Bay Area to Germany. Not to forget they’re access to Ivy League graduates. Last but not least the salaries for a junior engineer at Tesla are salaries you can dream of as an engineer at a German car company.
Salaries at tesla is more because usa is a lot more expensive than Germany .... even munich is so much cheaper than California...... so the purchasing power parity remains the same.... but I agree on the software part
Tesla infotainment is responsive, because Tesla understood that the first perception comes from the interface, so the connection point between the product and the user should be seamless. Meanwhile other automakers try to save a few cents to build-in "lower-shelf tablets"...
@@sunitadey9701 It does not matter even factoring in the cost of living. Software developers in Bay Area, working for big tech companies llike Tesla, easily make $500K a year salaries - base, bonus, stock comps. Another person mentioning perceived superior European benefits is also off base. The US tech industry offers all of that plus more. You get 401K contributions, unlimited vacation in some cases or at least 4 weeks a year, plus maternity leaves, and other perks. So yeah, Germany or any Eu country can't really compare to Bay Area (or any other USA tech hub) when it comes to compensation and overall work life balance. Cheers.

Great intro to the model Y finally here in Europe. Desperately awaiting the RH U.K. version which I believe is to be made in Germany? I thought my long love affair with German built cars had come to an end with Tesla but maybe I’m wrong🙂. I tried the Audi Q3 etron as a next step from my A3 but was not impressed and my drive of a Tesla lll blew me away so role on Giga Berlin production. Meantime my A3 used car price increases😊 Thank you Thomas. 👍
The German EVs are ok. Teslas are better. Better performance, better range, better price, better automation, better user interfaces, excellent driving feel, excellent handling, etc.

Same experience test driving an etron for the price the only advantage I could see was the air suspension but range, performance, software tech was a disappointment in the Audi. I also preferred the one pedal simple drive of Tesla I’m not a fan of Audi’s paddle shifter regen setup. Overall impression was Audi took one of their other ICE vehicles and put batteries in it. This might be good for some who prefer to ease into the EV experience but I found it to be less futuristic feeling. I also like the clutter free minimalist interior some find it not luxurious enough but I’m tired of LED overload that some equate to luxury.
I wish that journalists would explain that dozens of different driver profiles can be saved that include almost every programmable feature. It is only necessary to program all of the options just once. You could make up anything you want. Thomas Sporty, Thomas Relaxed, anything that you want. The ventilation system is also included in the saved drivers. There is also an optional easy entry mode that is selected whenever you put the car in park and takeoff your seatbelt. I have mine move the seat all the way back and low, plus my steering wheel goes all the way in and all the way up. This is all software that Tesla is constantly improving.

You mean the Model 3? Model Y is bigger, has much more cargo space.. But the reason for me to order the Model Y was the hatchback door and the towing capacity (Y; 1600Kg; 3: 900Kg), it makes it such a more capable and practical car.. I really need the towing capacity for towing my glider all over Europe. and I can throw in my tent easily through the hatchback door... Impossible with the Model 3. Interior, drive train, software is all very similar to the Model 3 If you do not care about practicality of the car and just want the best performance, range and efficiency.. go for the Model 3 performance.
It depends on one's needs. The Model 3 is arguably one of the best sedans ever built. The Model Y is arguably one of the best crossovers ever built. The Model 3 is more efficient, but the Model Y has more cargo capacity. Both are great.
@@MarcoNierop I agree with everything you said until you said MODEL 3 Performance. NO the best value is MODEL 3 LONG RANGE and if you crave more sports power there is an acceleration booster package you can get and have a few hours to change your mind on and reverse it as it is all software based.
Picked up our European delivery long range Model Y just over two weeks ago, we love the thing! Effortless and easy to drive, fast or slow. My wife went from being a skeptic to a full convert to the Teslerati in 5 days ;-) At least in Switzerland, I still do not see a rival, when taking price, performance, efficiency, interior space and charging network into account. A few extra notes. Build quality on ours seems very good, equivalent to the one Thomas reviewed here. In my opinion it looks much better “in person” than on photos, since the 3D sculpting is more obvious. I’m biased, but I like the way it looks (for me much better than the Mach-E I saw in a local showroom). Touchscreen and controls are fast and intuitive once you get used to them. Visibility through the tinted rear windscreen is not great, especially at night, but can be aided with the rear view cameras. Even if more compact than a Model X, it is still quite wide and the wheels are placed right on the edges, so watch out for kerbs. Acceleration and handling are more than impressive, especially considering its size. Compared to our previous car - diesel S-Max almost 14 years old - it’s like taking an instant jump into the future, ha ha!
Great review as always. I really want to order a Model Y LR but i’m going to wait for the german made one, because it might have the 82 kWh battery the Model 3 LR has. Perhaps it’s unnecessary, perhaps not. Danke schön from Sweden!
I will get my Model Y next week, an imported one from China... When I got the message from Tesla my Model Y is almost ready (I ordered it and deposited 2000 Euro in May 2020!) , I also had this first reaction to wait for the German made version.. But, after thinking about this for a few days, I came to the conclusion, it makes little sense to do that... Tesla will make sure all Model Y's in the same catagory will have the same specs, so the improvements for the customer are trivial, all improvements are mostly benefitting Tesla themself. The front and rear mega castings, structural battery pack with 4680 cells will reduce manufacturing costs for Tesla and improves production rates , but for the customer it hardly makes any difference... The car may be a little lighter, so range and efficiency increases a littlebit and maybe the handling improves somewhat..But the Model Y will be my best car ever anyhow, so what difference would it make for me personally, probably not much. Fit and finish from Shanghai is excellent, so no concern there as well. BTW, rumors go around that both Texas and Berlin will start using 2170 cell non structural battery packs for the Model Y first, because the 4680 cell is not ready yet to be used commercially, nobody can tell how long this would take. Software, features, interior, exteriior will all be the same, so there is also no reason to wait.
@@MarcoNierop You are exactly right. For actual customers, the evolutionary improvements to the cars (including gradual increases in battery capacity) make not much difference. All are excellent and highly usable. I own a Fremont USA built Model 3, and it's very possible the China made cars will be the highest quality, though Germany may eventually be good too. Like you I plan to keep my Model 3 for a very long time, possibly for multiple decades. We do not buy new cars every 3 years, and Model 3 is nearly a perfect car. Same with Model Y.
A little extra battery capacity might be slightly useful in the winters in Sweden, but since most drivers in the U.S. and EU drive fewer than 60 km per day, pretty much any long range EV is more than enough for daily driving. Long range becomes an advantage for very long road trips, as does a very good fast charger network such as Tesla's Superchargers. Due to both factors, Teslas are great at both local driving and long trips. And they're really excellent cars. But for most daily use, almost any EV will work well. Most have more than enough range for actual distances most people drive each day.
Excellent.. I already heard the Shanghai made Tesla's build quality is much better as what comes from Fremont. I will get my white Long Range AWD Model Y next week in The Netherlands... I have to pick it up at the Tilburg Factory, where they used to assemble the Model S and Model X for Europe, now making Super Chargers.. looking soooo forward to that!
Actually Tesla has done this several times before, taking over car showrooms from legacy car makers, quite a few from Porsche, its not the first one, but certainly the biggest one! This building is huge!

Can you do a range test with an electric vehicle at highway speed? Manufactures always say like 500km range, but they always use mix testing and electric vehicles use much more power at higher speeds. Thanks, have a good one 🤝🏻
I believe the German factory will have the new rear section casting when it comes out. That should be an interesting change in production and long term quality since there are less parts. Always appreciate Thomas's perspective and attention to detail. I would be very interested to understand the perspective on Self Driving when the act of driving is such a privilege in Germany.
@@autogefuehl No, Berlin will be the first with the new casting with Giga TX being next. Berlin will be on the cutting edge for casting and paint. They should be the best built Y's when it comes on line.
Great shout on the driving dynamics- and great review :)- it's due to front and rear 'Gigacastings' (huge die- castings, replacing stamped and welded parts). It's a revolution in vehicle engineering.
Thomas I initially missed having physical climate controls, but after using voice commands I’m cold, hot and adjusting temp by 3 degrees each way is very convenient. I also find the ventilation to be more uniform and comfortable compared to traditional systems that blast you with fans. I wish Audi would move to the one pedal driving setup rather than the paddle strategy.
Even for cars that don’t interest me, I do follow your channel. Your reviews are always to the point, relaxed and super informative. And with a touch of humor. Chapeau!

I can't wait for you to get the plaid on the autobahn! And you should ABSOLUTELY do a video on the Tesla factory. I know it's not just a Tesla channel or an electric energy channel, but that factory says a lot about the future of the industry. I would lean into it and not be too worried about it. :) There's so many perspectives to the factory. There's a local german one. A larger germany one, as in what does it say for the future of the car industry in Germany. A political one. A european one. All of them fascinating to me at least and I often feel like it isn't talked about enough. The americans and their youtube channels and podcasts are just way better at talking about these things than the EU is.

Definitely that's what's missing is a heads up display or instruments in in front of you, I personally like the new yoke wheel in the plaid model 3... I think it's a vast improvement having a yoke wheel..

IMHO, IONIQ 5 vs TESLA MODEL Y... : Tesla great job, max speed, range especially leveraging its shape and weight. Still prefer, being in Europe, comfort. 99% of my trips are within 200kms one way. With the Hyundai IONIQ 5, I do look forward to ventilated seats, Android Auto, the roomy and comfortable interior, HUD, real blindspot monitoring, 360 camera. Also like reclining seats with foot rest and reclining console for arms rest, all electronic aids especially against collisions, automated parking (top trim), blind spot cams on dashboard when turning, V2L, sun shades integrated in back doors, electric sunroof shade, wide space available inside with good visibility through the back window etc. And the obviously efficient 400V to 800V internal battery inverter for fast charging. Other bugs with Tesla : Model 3 too low on the ground (Model Y is a perfected Model 3); door handles too complicated for kids and scratchy with persons with long finger nails; blue jeans bleed on those white seats.; simplistic navigation system(whereas under ANDROID AUTO, ABRP beta notably has settings for car weight, or TomTom Go 's use of all offline maps etc. ); quality of paint jobs ; mediocre internal lighting; loud alerts not compatible with family driving. Also 5 year car warranty illimited kms (Max 80 000 for Tesla... Reliability issues?), and 8 year battery warranty (same as Tesla). Details can be found on google. Here are some highlights from the conclusion they brought up at the end of the video. 1. Both car's AVG speed were about 100KM/h (Highway drive) 2. Both car's A/C and other convenience functions(like Highway drive assistance for Ionic 5, Auto Pilot for Model Y and etc.) were always on during the test. 3. 4 drivers drove about 100km per person and checked the remaining battery at designated location. 4. Both car have shown slightly poor battery performance than usual because of the weather condition (rain) 5. By just looking at the specification, Model Y can drive 141km more than Ionic 5. However the actual drive test have shown that the difference were only about 60~70km. This experiment have shown that IONIC 5's driving range is little longer than what Hyundai advertised. 6. They have concluded that both Ionic 5 and Model Y can drive from Seoul to Busan. The distance between those two cities are about 350km. Hope this helps.

Looking really nice! I'm really looking forward to the future smaller/cheaper models from Tesla. I like their design philosophy of keeping things simple yet functional, but I personally don't need such a big and expensive car.
