@@frederickmoller I live in upstate NY. We get plenty of snow. Installing a set of Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires on it. I average 32mpg, which is 8 mpg better than the Tacoma I had. Being I'm over 50 age wise, no plans to attempt to drive during major storms where deep snow would be a concern. Main thing is, people need to drive what they feel meets their needs!

I wouldn't complain much about the drivetrain... I mean, this is a a car meant to be familiar, reliable, functional, practical, safe and without braking the bank nor incurring in fancy features. It has by no means sport pretentions, just a reliable Crossover for daily driving and weekend trips. It does the job, and it is an always good Toyota.

This must have took some time filming I watched a few other reviews on this and they didn’t go to half the trouble you did to film this , a very comprehensive first drive .I prefer cloth seats ,only leather when they’re cooled as well hopefully Toyota will send you one when the first snow arrives

The Toyota Corolla Cross looks like a mini Highlander which is pretty cool. I’m glad they are replacing the CHR. Hopefully this stacks up well against the beautiful Subaru Crosstrek, reliable Honda HRV, and affordable Hyundai Kona. I really love the looks of the Subaru Crosstrek, but in terms reliably owning of the car for the next 30+ years this Toyota Corolla Cross probably takes the cake for me over the Honda HRV. Hyundai Kona is a good value at a good price but their entire fleet hasn’t quite proved itself in terms of 30+ year dependability.

Surprisingly, they are not replacing the CHR. It will still be sold for those who want a smaller vehicle. But the Corolla Cross is definitely much better as a sub-compact SUV competitor for the NA Market.

Super cute SUV! I may eventually purchase this for a second car. Currently drive a 2013 Accord EX Sedan with CVT transmission and that thing can move on the highway! I would love to have something like this for weekend shopping where speed isn't an issue and the extra cargo space would be appreciated.

Sadly in the US didn’t get hybrid option, here in Thailand we got 4 trims (lowest trim is called “entry” with 1.8 Liter engine and a CVT) the rest is Hybrid (Hybrid Entry,Mid,High in order)

Yes, mirroring most of your viewers, Ryan. I'd like to say, it's quite a looker, especially for the price bracket. And the safety sense is standard? Especially in the base model? Excellent job, Toyota!! Where it's lacking, which I mentioned a few days ago is; making this a Turbo/AWD little bugger. And naming it, the new Toyota Celica alltrac Turbo. You know, what Mitsubishi did to the Eclipse. Why is everyone going to a CVT is beyond the MPG savings. It's almostike they(All the manufacturers) are setting themselves up for failure. Definitely from an enthusiast perspective. Then again, who am I? If it's appealing to the masses, ala Subarus, Nissans, Hondas and their CVTs.. Then we the bunch which love to row our own gears, or love the power thrust turbos allow us(Not only for the fun factor but, safety as well, when getting out of harm's way). Either way, Well Done, Ryan.. Can't wait to see it out at the RTT(Ryan Test Track).

It would've been nice if you elaborated (much) more on how it compares with its main competition, the CrossTrek, especially since you own the latter. What we learned from the video was that i'ts slower, but nothing about how it compares in ride, handling, noise or fuel economy (other than just citing the EPA estimates).

2.0 Petrol with 169 HP for this small car is actually good. I have Mitsubishi Outlander with 2.0 MiVEC that's bigger and has 150 HP.

Gonna be honest, more power would be nice, I'm guessing Toyota wants to see how it's gonna pan out before doing anything else. Maybe they will put a 2.5 liter engine in it. 200 hp would nice. I also would love to see a upgrade in the AWD system as maybe a 3rd option 1. 2 wheel drive, 2. Basic AWD 3. A REAL AWD system. Really set on getting one but might wait a year to see what happens. Though a Rav4 adventure seems tempting ngl.

Aah the Toyota Corolla Cross - commonly referred to as the Toyota Not-a-RAV4 I've been riding a few (common where I live, launched some year ago) and it really is kinda like a RAV4 except that it is less comfortable, smaller, slower. Of course also cheaper. Which is good.

I'd been looking forward to the first test drives of this Corolla Cross, and I'm not too surprised, but I am disappointed. I currently drive a "0-60 in 10 sec" vehicle, and I think I've had enough of it. I'm *not* a fan of Subaru, but a Crosstrek Sport or Limited with the 2.5 liter engine is looking more-acceptable, now, performance-wise, for about the same price.

Corolla Cross in Canada with AWD is $5,000 less than the 185 HP Crosstrek. I spent Alot of time in Subaru dealership admiring Crosstrek. It doesn't have the rear vents which my family needs so $5K savings gets what I needed. Crosstrek has more rear leg space but smaller trunk than the Cross. A compromise. Waiting for 2023 Honda HRV to see what it can bring to the table in 2022. Will it have the new Civic tech? Really hope so.

I like it. I still have my 06 5 sp manual Matrix, worked Toyota service, but the cost for this? I have to admit, if the new Ford Maverick proves reliable I would love to get one... Add a camper shell and call it a day. A nearly fully loaded 2022 Lariat AWD would cost about the same, have MUCH more power (about 80 HP more), 29 MPG hwy, etc... Base Maverick hybrid gets 40 mpg hwy, starts at under $20k.

I agree, but Toyota perhaps has run into some supply issues. It makes no sense otherwise because they already announced that all new models would have some form of electrification. But that was before the pandemic and supply issues.

Ryan, you always mention HP and Torque, but never the actual mass of the vehicle: would you please include the mass so that those of us who like maths, can figure the power-to-weight ratio. I would estimate this vehicle to be about 1300 Kg or about 2700 pounds for those who still use the imperial system.

Sadly it’s much heavier at 3320 pounds… the 2.0 is just not enough. I have a 2020 Corolla se that comes in just under 3100 pounds, it’s much better but still slow. 10.5 seconds 0-60/10.8 for 0-100 for Corolla cross and about 8.5 for Corolla se. awd, bigger body, same gearing didn’t help this new model.

Despite all the new technology, cars have not become lighter, and fuel economy has not drastically improved over the past 70 years - but cars are that much safer, though here in Oz we are not allowed to go over 100 KPH/60MPH - so what is the use of all the safety features?

i could have said your way low i own an 08 impreza 3000lb on give or take 50 lbs, thats a small car that they make all a ton of crazy effort to get the weight down new cars have a buncha safety garbage and its unheard of a car weighing under 3000lbs these days. if my car was 2700 it'd be a rocket.

@@Shishizurui Years ago I owned several FX Holdens - a GM car build in the late "40s and it had a weight of 998 Kg, fraction under 2000 pound, it was motivated by an ancient six cylinder 135 CI motor and it achieved phenomenal fuel figures compared to today's cars. So much for technology making a safer environmental impact.

Would you recommend this or a RAV4 for carrying around 2 large German shepherds? Does Toyota offer all weather mats for the Corolla Cross? Also, I hate CVT’s. That’s the one thing that’s a deal-breaker for me. Probably going to go with a RAV4 Adventure but I’m still curious if the Cross might be a compelling option. I do want to do some light soft roading and I’m sure the RAV4 Adventure will be better for that, but I’m still going to look more into the Cross.

I grew up in an SUV and have owned one crossover (2016 Escape). I think they are perfect for most people, just high enough off the ground, enough room for a small family to travel, decent MPG, safe, reliable, overpriced for what they are just how Americans like, and you can get AWD for northern climates like mine. In need of a truck now, they too are overpriced both new and used, going really used because I can not justify the prices for what it will be used for.

Only wishes I can see is that there should be more torque at low to mid RPM for better acceleration for safer passing left of center line of slower vehicles from around 70 kilometres per hour or 43 Miles per hour (I do not care about acceleration speed from a stop), power seats on front passenger seat, up and down adjustable lumbar support on driver's seat, driver's seat memory and power folding mirrors at least on the XLE trim. All vehicles should come with an under hood blanket/sound insulator as added on the 2nd year (2020) of the current Rav4 generation and two USB ports up front. So I just saw one at the dealership today. Not allowed to drive it due to Covid. I'm 5'10" tall and with winter boots on with a slight 1/2" sole, my head would barely touch the rear liftgate when opened. I will now look more at getting the Rav4 because I do not want to slouch a bit everytime the liftgate is open and I will likely forget from time to time and hit my head.

i have a corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. so l smile when i see the gas pump, and its a different kind of fun to squeeze for MPG.

I'm still thinking about between Corolla cross XLE n Subaru crosstrek outdoor with some extra options. I don't do off road often , but lots of snowing winter driving, that makes them almost identical price. Hope the hybrids arrived soon, fuel efficiency is important too. Unfortunately my favorite cx30 is over priced. I had Subaru b4 that makes me more confident on crosstrek than Corolla cross (although I had prius b4 too) but the crosstrek head beam is quite awful. Usually I just need to load 2 person n lots of stuff in the back, What u guys think which one is better? Any suggestions?

Sort of surprised with the rear exhaust design. Toyota is usually quite good at hiding their exhaust setup making the rear of the vehicles clean-looking. This one just dangles out there looking a bit silly.

Power/speed? It's a Corolla right? Since when do Corolla's have strong engines? I also own a Toyota Supra, but i recently bought one of these as my main commuter vehicle to work, longer road trips, and trips to Costco. It's exactly what i wanted/expected it to be. If i want power/speed, then i know what which vehicle i'm going to choose when i leave the house.

The rear cupholders on the doors are more meant for those 500ml water or Coca Cola bottles, not for coffee or fast food cups. Just looking at this, I'm more determined to go to the VW Taos over the Corolla Cross. Even in the cloth trimmed seating, you can't get a foldable centre armrest with a pair of cup holders in the Corolla Cross. I find that Toyota has kind of given up on quality a bit.

I have been looking to upgrade from my 2006 Matrix and had been looking very seriously at the Cross since July. I am going to testdrive it given my Matrix had similar performance issues with an underpowered engine. I've driven the Crosstrek but found it had loud road noise in comparison to the Forester.

Ryan, I respectfully submit that an upgrade to the Camry/RAV4 203 hp, 2.5 powertrain would have no negative impact on mpg while seriously boosting performance. Naturally, the 219 hp 2.5 AWD Hybrid system would be even better. At the price and weight of a 4 cylinder Camry, the Corolla Cross should come with a Camry drivetrain. Coincidence: The trailer for "The Matrix Resurrections" made its debut today.

I think we'll have to wait for the new hybrid Corolla Cross to be announced next year before we see what I would consider to be an acceptable level of performance.

@@drivingsports I expect it will have the 2.0 Hybrid system from the Lexus UX so it ought to be a slight upgrade. When someone who spends their driving life in the slow lane is concerned about performance, you know you have an issue. ;-)

@@rightlanehog3151 Would be great if they put in the 2.0 hybrid from the UX, but the existing Corolla Cross hybrid in other markets uses the 1.8 liter, so I don't know.
