Quick tip, take 2 pieces of 1” pvc pipe about 5’ long. Cut the rope on your sled in half and run them through the pvc pipe and attach caribeaners to the ends of the rope. You can hook the caribeaners onto your pack and the pvc prevents the sled from sliding and hitting you while walking downhill

What I really like about this system is that it contemplates carrying a firearm. Most channels are too afraid of the RU-vid censors to do that, and it makes the load plan completely unrealistic. Who would wander into the SHTF landscape without a firearm?

Actually, you shouldn't keep a sleeping bag packed up unless yer carrying it. Pull it out of the bag and hang it. It'll keep it's loft for a lot longer. Keeping it compressed kills the loft which means it won't keep you as warm.

I live in one of the coldest areas in the USA. I like a lot of your gear but my main issue is that it’s just too big. When temps here reach below zero there are a few things to consider. You must keep your core warm, you must stay hydrated, and you must keep your gear weight manageable. Sweating can be a death sentence. The key is to insulate and layer with appropriate clothing. My cold weather bag is only about ten pounds. It has everything I would need to survive and get home. Cold weather clothing, fire capability, hydration, signaling and emergency food. Living in central Minnesota my entire life, I would consider myself an expert on this topic being that I’ve had to plan and deal with extreme cold weather for decades. In freezing temperatures, you must consider only the core essentials because a 30 pound pack and a ten pound pack might be the difference of actually getting to safety alive while trying to cover miles in sub zero temperatures.

thanks for the video neighbor :) - well panhandle dude here so it looks like similar weather and similar needs for this type of pack. I found it helpful as I need a bigger pack as the one i use most of the time is more of the get home type and or fits better with other loadouts to balance the weight Q - are you still happy with the pack itself and its size to allow for some expansion or less stuff for warmer times of the year?
@idahoprepper
@idahoprepper Год назад
Thanks for watching, yes I've been through many different packs, the eberlestock that I'm currently using has its upsides and downsides. It is definitely a heavy duty, rugged pack, which makes it heavy right out the gate, but it's best feature is it's accessibility from all its openings. You can access all your without having to dump stuff out or move stuff around too much. It's also very comfortable, and versatile. If I were shopping for another pack today I probably wouldn't buy it again mostly because of its price point, eberlestock packs can be pretty expensive especially considering they are all still made in china.. their are off brand packs available that are almost identical to the eberlestock pack that I have for a fraction of the price. I'd probably go with a lighter pack too.. But as far as the size of my pack goes I definitely would not downsize, because it just barely fits all my gear. Anyways thanks for your question and thanks for watching!

@@idahoprepper Great, thanks for the response, appreciate it. Made in JINA takes it off the list just like that. Would suggest other packs - and I agree on the size as I have other smaller packs for shorter term stuff - that I might look at or consider in this range? The 511 comp just jumped up by like $45 bucks overnight... they must be listening :) Happy Friday IP

Hey my Idaho brother!! Your Kit makes mine look sick. I know that you're in the CDA area, and I'm in the Idaho Falls area. Have you thought about including your clothing you wear during your bugout in the Winter??? The other consideration that I thought you were missing was hydration while bugging out. I have camel packs in my bags, and of course water filtration too. I was also considering using a JetBoil system too because if you can burn saturated wood.
@mrdark9916
@mrdark9916 Год назад
I actually live in CDA lol. Born and raised here Camelbacks in winter are a no go. Clothing for cold winter temps is the same anywhere really, Base layer, outer insulating layer, outer shell/rain gear I use quality Merino wool for socks and base layers, wool pants (good ol woolies!) Some sort of fleece for outer insulation layer, then gore-tex top/bottom for rain gear/shell layer. Also 100% bring gore-Tex gaiters, a beanie, work gloves & "winter gloves", shemaugh (multi purpose as hell) , and I also bring a Military Poncho for a spare tarp/rain layer that covers everything including pack (I have a pack cover as well.) But it's mostly for a spare tarp In pack I have spare base layer top/bottom, spare socks and a spare fleece. But the reason I use wool for basically everything is it's warm as hell and keeps 80% of it's insulation properties even when soaking wet. And you WILL get wet, if not from outside your clothing then from inside. Moisture wicking, quick air drying when needed, and ability to keep insulated while soaking wet is KEY if you plan to be outside full time during a North Idaho winter haha
@mrdark9916
@mrdark9916 Год назад
As for a jetboil, it's a great system for short term use however I'd recommend a small foldable wood burning stove. And the "next fire mentality" meaning once you get a fire going you dry out kindling ect for your NEXT fire, and put it in a ziplock bag ect to protect it and keep it dry. Long as u do that you are golden. Even if everything is soaked, as ling as you have good dry kindling to work with you can easily dry soaked twigs ect to get the fire going, and then put more wood around the fire. You use it as a fire wall to reflect the heat back to you and dries it for later use I carry a heavy mil trash bag just for the purpose of storing dry wood into for getting the next fire going im staying at that spot. If I plan to move I'll just take a ziplock bag full, enough to make sure I have a good base stock to work with when I get where I'm going.

@idahoprepper
@idahoprepper Год назад
I'm looking at the snugpak elite 3.. I'm definitely a little torn between getting a bag with synthetic fill vs. Down fill. With synthetic, you get more warmth for the money, but synthetics lose a lot of their insulation value after 10 years.. Down on the other hand lasts forever, but they will become worthless if they get wet, so you have to keep them dry by keeping a waterproof bivy on them, especially in the winter. Midwayusa.com will have the best deals on sleeping bags 2-3 days before Christmas.. so keep an eye out for that, they were selling their browning-20 Kenai bags for $50.00 last year.. anyways hope that helped you, and thanks for watching my video!

The Fac Track is probably one of the worst ways to go. I had one in multicam and one in their “military green”. Completely empty it weights 7lbs. It wouldn’t fit my complete shelter/sleep system (I’m in NW Montana, I utilize a light weight tarp, hammock, underquilt, and zero degree sleeping bag) plus a change of clothes, extra socks, minimalist cook system, and food. When packed with everything minus my sleeping bag (that wouldn’t fit), it was about 35lbs. I traded it in and ordered an Alps Mountaineering Nomad. The Nomad is between 65L and 80L (roll top) and 4lbs empty. When ounces = pounds and pounds equal pain, the difference when the Nomad has my complete sleep system, plus change of clothes, plus dry socks, plus cook system, and some food is still noticeably lighter than than my Fac was on my back. My AR and lever action fit on the side better than they do with the fac if that’s how I want it. Eberlestock Fac Track Weight - 7.2 lbs Size: 24"h x 10"w x 7"d Alps Mountaineering Nomad Weight: 4lbs Size: 26”h x 14”w x 7”d So with the Alps, I got two extra inches in height (at minimum I assume), four extra inches in width, and both are 7 inches deep, and the Alps is still lighter empty. And if I need it to be camouflaged, I can get a multicam rain cover that weighs about nothing. And the Alps is about $100-$200 less than the Eberlestock.
@idahoprepper
@idahoprepper Год назад
Yeah, I definitely have those same gripes with the fac track.. the fact that it’s a $400 backpack made in china with a Eurocentric sounding name ticks me off a lot! I’ll probably sell it and get into something lighter soon.. anyways thanks for your comment and for watching!

@@tactikiller "shit hits the fan" is a term people throw around a lot without ever bothering to talk about specifics though. This one load out if for every possible reason he has to leave his house? For how long? Would he take it to an evacuation centre in the case of a huge forest fire or flood? What if he wakes up and his house is on fire, he has to get out and go live in a hotel for a week, is this that bag as well? A gang of looters break into his house at night during a riot or after a prolonged blackout and he has to escape and evade, is this what he is grabbing on the way out? On a long road trip and the engine explodes, no cell service but a small town is only 5 miles away.. in the back of the car is his SHTF bag. Is this what he walks through the night with to get there? Or is this just if the bombs fall and he has to survive a post nuclear war? my point is shtf is a broad term, what did he have in mind when he put together this loadout?
