It looks like any Genesis G80 (and that’s a good thing) but the Electrified G80 is, well, electrified. It’s quiet. It’s quick. The dual-motor drivetrain makes 365 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque shoots this luxo sedan to 60 miles-an-hour in under five seconds. It charges fast too with an 800V architecture. Tom Voelk checks out a fully loaded model (since it’s the only way the E G80 comes) and finds it to be as normal as an EV can be. Too bad it can only be bought in 8 states.

These 0-60 times are insane. The fact that anyone would say "just under 5 seconds...is not as fast as..." is loopy, especially for a luxury boat. Mainly probably because I'm old and under five seconds was blistering in the 80s and even 90s....

I agree and honestly anything under 5 seconds is fast! I think cars are being designed to take off way faster than they need to. Anything that can hit 60 in less than 8 seconds is more than adequate.

I agree with you, but fact is, it's not as quick as some EVs and I have to point that out. What's important is acceleration at speed for passing and this is very capable.

There was probably only a handful of production cars in the entire world with an under 5 sec time in the 1980's and the 1990's was not much better. The 1995 Corvette was a 5.4 sec car FFS.

Thank You, what a fantastic review; you represent a refreshing polished class act and professional presentation benchmark that many automotive content creators should aspire to be. Your presentation style is educational, informative and entertaining, which is what a car review should be especially for automobiles of this price point. As an EV owner, I really appreciate the comments about how EV range is affected by many factors (6:27) as well as charging speed, people need to be educated to offset the misinformation campaign based on fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) thats being pushed. As a BMW i3 owner who commutes 90 miles daily, public charging is really rare even for me. I begin many EV discussions with people, on the fence or just curious about EVs, with the statement "how far do you actually plan on driving today anyways?" Seeing that fast charging station charging you 43 cents a KwH was pretty egregious, ($25-$30 for that car) when we enjoy the cheapest electrons in the country in Washington State at 8 +/- cents a KwH. Yes, at home charging is the best charger. Adapting to an EV isn't difficult, but it's sure liberating and there's no going back to supporting Shell, Chevron and others with their cut of my personal transportation freedom.

Yes, that's expensive but some 85% of charging is done at home. As you know, DC fast charging is really only used by most people when traveling. It's a convenience.

Thank you for talking about fueling sources for EVs, you nailed it. The fact is, the G80EV is better than the gas version. Quieter, smoother, and better acceleration in every day driving (esp. on/off/on accelerator, no transmission slowing you down). This is the transition point.

That is hilarious, it’s like you read my mind Tom. At the beginning of the video you called out Toyota for trying to push hybrids like they are full electric. Literally 2 minutes before I sat down to watch your video I was talking about that exact thing with someone. I think that Toyota is trying to hop on the buzz about electric vehicles. I wondered how they managed to get enough batteries into the modular platform to go almost 300 miles, and then you opened the trunk. The limited cargo room seems to be the only major knock against the vehicle. If you can live with the reduced trunk space, the car makes for a solid alternative to other large luxury EV sedans. I’ve been looking forward to the Electrified GV70 coming out later this year, but early specs from Korean models seem to indicate a range of 250 or less depending on wheel size. I’m glad to see Genesis moving forward with their EV lineup. Their use of 800v and V2L tech on all models is impressive. Oh, and this video looked amazing on 4K tv. As always!

I finally sat down a few days ago to figure out the cost ratio between the gas vehicle I am currently using (Toyota 4runner) vs the EV on the way (BMW i4 RWD). The BMW has an 83 KWH battery capacity which, at my local rate of 13 cents per KWH here in Virginia, costs about $10 to "fill". That's for a full charge starting from zero, yielding a range of about 300 miles. In comparison, my 4Runner, which averages 19MPG, would cost over $50 in fuel to go the same 300 miles. Obviously the vehicles you plug into the equation are a big variable. But in my case, it's a 5-to-1 ratio in fuel costs, very much in favor of EV's. And, as for where that power comes from......it comes free of charge from the solar panels on my roof. Yes, you have to have the financial resources to make these investments. But the numbers are there. And they are pretty impressive.

The car is really good looking it reminds me of a jag xf just more reliable than a jag xf. I get a touch of the kia stinger just grown up and polished as well. If I had one critique about the car....I am surprised it doesnt have a pano roof or any sort of sunroof at the price of 81k. Still though the car would fit my lifestyle it just feels a little pricey but I do think it looks great. Another good video as always.

Great review, as always! Small point about how EV range is discussed by car journos and the public: Range anxiety is really not about road-tripping as much as it is about how long a driver can go through a period of every day driving (school run, commute, shopping, etc.) before needing to recharge. People rarely mention road-tripping when talking about ICE engine range if range is discussed at all. Nearly every article or review of EVs takes this tack about range as if long runs are top of mind for most prospective EV buyers. It's really about how long can said EV go between charges while the driver does all the boring driving that must be done on the daily. Most ICE engine drivers aren't driving 100+ miles in a stint with great frequency so when it's time to refuel after say a month of regular driving (school run, commute, etc.), it's (hopefully) fine because the gas tank capacity and fuel economy should be suitable to most needs. If not, well, they need a more efficient car. And most ICE drivers don't refuel daily. I agree 100% with your recommendation that EV owners should just charge up daily and ideally should have their own charging port at home.

I cover it that way because in my experience with the questions and emails I get, people are most concerned with traveling. Generally, people in apartments and condos that can't charge where they live are resigned to ICE or hybrid powertrains (and I think that's smart for now). With my experience with the PHEVs I own, day-to-day driving would be effortless with a range of 200 miles and over. Heck I only buy a tank a gas once a year unless I go on a long road trip. But humans being humans, they're wary of plunking down $40K plus on a vehicle to find the EV lifestyle doesn't work for them. I get that. Typically a week in one shows it's not an issue.

I enjoy your EV reviews Tom because you're the only journalist that tells the truth that EVs right now are not for everyone, even though you're a fan. I respect that you don't choose to shame non-EV buyers like other reviewers do. I don't live in a place or live a lifestyle where an EV is practical yet. I drive a gas powered Volvo as my daily driver. When I trade it in, I'm seriously thinking about a hybrid, not a full EV. It makes the most sense for me in my situation. From what I'm seeing, this seems to be a popular route for most people. As for my other car, I don't plan on trading in my C8 Corvette anytime soon. Sorry, I have to have a regular dose of passion with my sensibility, otherwise I wouldn't be a car guy. 😊

Thanks Tom, really appreciate all aspects of your your work. I will point out point out that you some times show a little of that east/west coast bias toward us people that live in fly over land. Living in west Texas the magic number for me will be 500 miles of range, in a vehicle under 40K. Living on the great planes single day round trips of that distance are not that unusual and most likely it is to towns not served by regular air service. I will just have to wait for technology to evolve. Still love you man,

Thanks for the contribution Deryl. On the contrary, most of the time I hammer home that people living in more rural areas are poorly served by EVs for a number of reasons. The infrastructure is almost non-existent outside of interstates and people like you need to travel long distances. You price/range demands are a long way off though, if they ever happen. Most ICE cars don't do 500 miles on a tank. With 800V charging, you'd be surprised how quick it is.

Tom….I have two questions about EVs in general: 1) when the battery in all these early EVs (including this Genesis) reaches its useful life in 8-10 years, what assurance is there that a new replacement will be available from the original manufacturer? Or 2) better yet, what are the chances that a replacement made with newer, better technology will be available as a bolt-in? That’s one of the questions I’d want a pretty firm answer to before I bought an EV…..especially a used one. The thought of my otherwise-perfect 10 year old EV going to the scrap yard because I can’t buy a battery for it doesn’t sit well with me.

It’s hard to answer your question because the premise is flawed. EV’s with active thermal management of the battery pack (that’s all of them sold today with the exception of the Nissan Leaf) have much longer useful lives than 8-10 years. You would be unlikely to see degradation beyond the low single digits in that timespan. Re: availability of replacements, that will probably vary by brand and model. Niche vehicles may have to look to third party services to re-cell a pack in 20 or 30 years.

@@readyplayer2 I know that old battery packs from cars are useful in other applications (I really like the idea of bolting my old EV’s battery to the wall in my garage to use to store energy generated by the solar cells on my roof), but they will at some point get to the point that they’re just not up to powering the car they came in. So whether it’s 8 years or 10 years or 15 years, how will we know if a new replacement will be available if we choose to keep the car? Again….. I don’t want to have to scrap my otherwise perfect car because there are no batteries available.

What readyplayer2 said, plus, there are companies already gearing up to recycle them. The minerals are too valuable to be tossed in a landfill. A friend of mine repurposed Nissan Leaf packs for his home solar panel setup and that's working great for him. Also, one of the beauties of the GM Ultium tech is when improved cells are introduced, a new module can replace a damaged one and it will integrate seamlessly (according to GM engineers). FYI, the pack in my ELR is seven years old with zero loss of range. EVs are not perfect but there's a lot of hype and misinformation out there making them seem worse than they are.

I really like the KIA/Hyundai company and what they are offering up as products. I adore the Ionic 5 and would buy it first and foremost if I was in the market for an EV. Still, no one has yet to match the packaging and design of the Teslas even when they start with a new ground-up platform. It's a little surprising that no one has beat it in that department. Elon and his crew did a great job with their designs.

This is simply not true. Tesla has no packaging advantage over the E-GMP platform (there's more front passenger space in Ioniq5 and EV6 instead of a frunk) and these days little tech advantage. Tesla's best attribute is the charging network. True, Model 3 and S look great but they are becoming long in the tooth, even with hardware and software updates.

Another good succinct and informative review from Tom. My question is, which refers to all EV's - If you use one-pedal driving and take your foot off the throttle to stop (eventually), do the rear brake lights come on? I'm hoping they do, as if they don't, that is a safety issue.

In the Rivian, yes with one pedal driving brake lights come on immediately. I found it takes a couple hours to smoothly drive one pedal, but I’m shocked to say I like it better!

At one time, I thought the industry (or at least one of the major manufacturers) was trying to develop the concept of a universal shape/size/configuration battery pack. This way one could simply pull up to station and change out the battery pack, ideally from underneath. This meant that going from empty to full charge was done in minutes. Even faster than filling a gasoline tank. I remember having doubts because of the ever evolving technologies and no one manufacturer would be able to pull off such an infrastructure (Although Tesla's supercharger network is impressive). This seems to be less-and-less feasible as we are rapidly moving in another direction. Shame.

I worry about the longevity of the brand. Have had 3 genesis cars and have a GV80 in the family now - I have to drive from Oregon to Washington for service, at a Hyundai dealer. Said dealer has shoved a filthy, 100k dollar 2023 G90 between two base model sonatas. This model won’t continue to work.

The rear seats should be heated and ventilated for a $80K+ EV sedan as well as a full panel sunroof. I don't like the 2 knobs either on the center console. Lastly, the rear seats should have a massage feature and seat back recline. Genesis is slipping...

0-60 times differ because of variables. Temperature, asphalt conditions, skill of the driver to name some. I’m very comfortable with my numbers.

I disagree with your thought that Genesis should sell this EV in all States. If the States that this EV is not sold in is anything like the Canadian Prairie provinces, this car would be a total fail. The charging infrastructure in the less populated areas of Canada is among the worst in the world. You obviously don’t know many Snowbirds who DRIVE from the Northwest to the Southwest and Baja for the winter. This, while nicely appointed, has significant shortcomings which you point out so ably.

Not a low at all Tom, it's a fact from the DOT. And my parents were those snowbirds until they moved south permanently. 280 miles is not poor range. It's far more than most people need on a daily basis. Anything more adds weight and price. Again, EVs are not for everyone. But really, after 280 miles of travel (or closer to 240 I suspect at a constant 75 MPH), a stop every three hours for 20 some minutes is a great chance to grab a snack. The only real shortcoming here for snowbirds is the trunk.

Annnddddd it’s absolutely *hideous.* Interior looks ok though, kinda old fashion/grandpa-esque. I never thought Lexus and Infiniti would be producing more youthful looking interiors than Hyundai/KIA’s Genesis brand but here we are.

Idk. I’m just not a fan of genesis especially not the styling here. I also hate the placement of the charge port. The interior looks like it was exclusively designed for VERY old people. The exterior styling looks incredibly dated already.

17:00 Yea but BEVs only last 100k max. No one in their right mind keeps a BEV past that, they are not like cars of the past. These "things" have a shelf life. Like it or not. Take the first gen BEV's... 👀 where are they? The First gen Leafs, the Focus EV, EV1. Say what you will about the tech good or bad these are not long term cars. We all know they go in the trash once the batts wear down, the resale is HORRIFIC. All that said id much rather have this over a Tesla. But after owning a BEV I'm no longer an EV adopter. I think both gas, D, and EV's have their role to play. I think eliminating all for one is stupid.

One of my cars is a 2011 Volt and I just hit 170k miles with ZERO battery issues. Your blanket statement is anecdotal and categorically FALSE.

The Leaf is a bad example since its battery is air cooled. Even so, you're pessimistic. My brother's Leaf has 120K miles on it and range has been reduced by 20%. Still extremely useful. Batteries do not go in the trash. The materials are too valuable for that. Recycling factories are being set up. And EV batteries can be repurposed for many things like power walls for home solar setups. Maybe resale was low but not anymore. My sister-in-law was offered more for her Bolt EV than she paid for it. Same with my wife's Volt PHEV.

I've not been on a Genesis trip Ashley. I pay for my gas. I get my cars from the press fleet, like 99% of auto writers. My quotes service is like any that sends referrals to dealerships. Also, people have many reasons for buying or not buying a vehicle. I point out positives and negatives. It's not my decision to make, it the buyers. Good to see you fixed your caps lock issue.

Due to demand, it's nearly impossible to find any EV in stock. Chevy Bolt with 260 miles of range can be had for well under $30k. People buy EVs for power, quietness, less maintenance and fuel saving, not eco factors. And it is better for the environment according to many reliable credible sources though the tipping point (cradle to grave) is around 50,000 miles. EVs may not work for you but they're great for many people.

Is that you absolutely have to take into account the energy used to mine, manufacture, keep lights on, smelting processes, pollution from those manufacturing processes, before "credible people" make a valid argument. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. It's a conversion reaction. Supply shortages vary. Because china has been throttling goods shipped over seas dosen't mean it's a sustainable economic model. The whole EU is in an energy crisis because Russia cut off gas supplies and your advocating for absolute reliance on China to source these materials? Since your so keen on "X numbers of people" buying EVs....you know how many people in the EU are screwed for energy from relying on a communist country? 447,700,000 million people.
