2023 Mahindra Scorpio review: New 6-seat SUV rises to Ford Everest 4WD challenge in off-road test

It's been a long time since Indian car brand Mahindra launched an all-new model in Australia, but the 2023 Mahindra Scorpio is finally here. It's an adventure-focused 'large' SUV that's zeroing in on the new Ford Everest, updated Isuzu MU-X and soon-to-be-replaced Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
So that it can be taken seriously, the six-seat Scorpio has a tough body-on-frame, ladder-frame chassis and a versatile four-wheel-drive (4WD) system that should imbue it with genuine off-road chops. And these off-road credentials are helped by its 129kW/400Nm turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
But as CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton finds out in this expert review, the Scorpion 4x4 is missing one key safety feature that you'd expect to be in any all-new model launched in Australia in 2023. And its absence could be a dealbreaker for some buyers.

Scorpios are the one of the popular family cars here in Nepal. They can go extreme off-roads, which of course is needed in my country and is good on road. Can't wait to see the scorpio-n in the snaky hilly roads of Nepal.

Feels good to see that Indian SUVs r doing very well in international market. For city use XUV 700 might be a better choice. But when it's for off-roading Scorpio N is good.

U don't know anything First of all Scorpio N is not the old Scorpio that was on sell. This particular Scorpio N has scored 5 stars in Global NCAP. If u don't believe me then go and search for it. And secondly the old generation Scorpio didn't had any airbags and during a collision the driver's head and neck could break due to no airbags in the front that's why it had got 0 stars. But the body structure, even of the old model was said to be stable, only the airbag was a problem. The new Scorpio Classic has 2 airbags and the same platform as the old gen, the old gen had a stable body and no airbags but the new one has airbags with stable body and if tested this time then it would bring good numbers. And once again Scorpio N is different than the Classic and has 5 star NCAP rating

Mahindra pickups helped to build the Indian small scale industry economy. Played a huge role in connecting rural to urban India. U can find the pickup in remotest of village, on the himalaya, on beaches, on rain forest, on deserts of India. Scorpio's are tanks. They are Indian land cruisers. @reubinthomas
@reubinthomas Год назад
@@thesagarmahapatra FCA's problem was the design, for which they sued and won. But, Mahindra cannot bring any other passenger cars to US because they simply wouldn't sell. They need to offer a V6 at the least to meet the American demand. A V6 Scorpio and Xuv 700 would bring some attention to Mahindra in the US market.
@thesagarmahapatra
@thesagarmahapatra Год назад
@@reubinthomas Design isn't the only issue. Mahindra changed the design on the Roxor yet jeep or FCA sued them again. The issue runs deeper. Also when it comes to passenger vehicles, I'm sure they can get American attention without a V6 since many companies are downsizing and Mahindra is eyeing EVs as well. 200 bhp from their GDis should be good enough for the American market at $25k or so. I do agree that a V6 would bring them undue attention though.
@giriyy
@giriyy Год назад
@@reubinthomas Yeah you are right there. Scorpio as is would be woefully underpowered for US market and not to mention, it will have to pass the stringent safety standards, which I am fairly confident will require a pretty much ground up re design of the scorpio at which point its not even worth competing. US car market is tough and demanding.

Suspension - plush and worked real nice in the rough from my breif time in it Other things - nice seats and interior - a step up from most chinese cars obove its price in my opinion. Rainy season...meant roads got washed away all you had was thick slush of mud, with islands of rocks and boulders and a foot deep puddle every where. And the drivers drove like mad max on those roads. You used to have back ache after a ride. They needed no maintaince. But kept on running without failing. That's the pedigree on which Mahindra has grown up. Even today.... We don't actually care about anything in rural area. It should be cheap, reliable... And most important should be able to take abuse... I mean abuse. That means no cleaning, no care, no maintaince, no changing of engine oil at right time, servicing at the shadiest places.... And still just go on.

Brake-locking differential (BLD) for the front and a mechanical-locking differential (MLD) at the rear. But in Australian model it comes with automatic rear-diff.

Very fair review, I am personally not worried about safety features like lane change assst, ect, none of my friends are using it on their German cars, it has the essentials like ABS and airbags. The stop/start function is no good. But overall the car is very relaxed on the open road, big and powerful enough and more economical than the Japanese competitors. And the sound system is excellent for the open road, better than about any system in a Toyota. I am an owner of the N and have owned over 70 different cars, this car doesn’t stand back for any in general use.

Mahindra have better Infosystems in their other cars, not sure why only in this car they provided not the best one. This feedback is seen even in india reviews. Surprisingly they launched the same screen abroad too. BUT THAT DAY IS NOT TOO FAR , WHEN LIKE IN INDIA, EVEN ABROAD THEIR CARS WILL HAVE HUGE WAITING PERIOD TOO. Eventually rest of the competition have to catch up to them. Not too far guys not too far from now. In india suddenly Tata and Mahindra have became most loved SUV brands. Other car brands have to catch up to them. Very soon u will see that happening there too.

The second generation S10 model with the tiger claw grill is the best looking Scorpio version. The Scorpio N messed up the car design a bit, especially the rear of the car which is kind of ugly. A hydraulic tailgate in the rear instead of the side opening tailgate would have been great.

Mahindra used to sell the Scorpio back in Malaysia 12-13 years ago. The dealership pulled out due to lack of sales although its almost 40% cheaper than a toyota or nissan. Refinement and lack of safety features was a major concern back then. Wonder how much improved is the current version ?

Mahindra and Tata are known for providing people the features at lower cost than what most reputed brands ask for and both are known to be the trend setters of safer cars in India with better quality of metals/alloys used in the bodies. Their cars often score 5 stars in global ncap for adults. Both are also known for making rugged vehicles that will last for ages. If Tata enters the Australian and South African market with their harrier and Safari you people might end up liking the looks of those two

Been using this car (4x2, indian variant), for past 6months and driven >10000km. Beleive me this is the most bang for buck. Refined engine, soft to drive and very less road noise makes it easy to use in city conditions as well. For fuel economy, I'm getting >15kmpl with mix of city and highway driving.
