Best cheap 4x4 in Australia? Mahindra Scorpio 2023 review (Scorpio-N 4WD SUV inc. off-road test)

The 2023 Mahindra Scorpio (known as Scorpio-N in India) might be the 4x4 off-road SUV bargain of the decade. But there's a catch.
If you buy this 4WD wagon, you will have to be okay with getting absolutely NO active safety technology included. In 2023, that comes across as WAY behind the times.
But then again, if you're considering it as an alternative to a few-year-old Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero or Toyota Prado (and it's about the same price as those vehicles with 150,000km on the clock!), it'll have the same amount of active tech as them...
So, does it matter? You'll decide for yourself. But there are plenty of other considerations when it comes to the Mahindra Scorpio - it has six seats, not seven seats. It has a diesel engine - no petrol or hybrid or EV available. It has proper four-wheel drive (with a low-range transfer case and locking rear diff). And it comes with a HUGE seven-year warranty.
OK. Watch the video, then let me know if you'd roll the dice on this one!

That's partly correct - the front occupant rating for Global NCAP is five stars. But the issue is that Global NCAP is the developing market safety authority, and the car that scored that rating only had dual front head airbags. No side, no curtain, no ESC. So, it's hardly a real rating for developed markets like Australia.

Best review I have seen so far in Au. Well done, fair, detailed and you understand the product and the market. Most of the other reviewers are biased against anything that doesn't cost 100k and they don't get kick backs from. They constantly use offensive and condescending word including; surprisingly, actually and quite to describe cars like the Mahindra. That instantly shows their biase against a product. None of my cars have what you talk about as active technology except maybe rear parking sensors. Most people I know turn that stuff off because it doesn't work properly and the chimes and unnecessary interference is annoying. I believe actual, real inbuilt engineered safety is more important than lights in the mirrors etc. Things like good visibility, good mirrors, powerful brakes, predictable handling and actual crash safety the way ancap used to be measured. More computer tech means more issues, more breakdowns, more distractions and more cost.

too many are blinded by badges, Toyota are sitting on their laurels these days but they still charge a premium just for the fact it is a Toyota, they are good, reliable cars (usually) but the Koreans have caught up these days (for the most part, they have a couple bad eggs, but most of them are good) without the incredibly high prices that the Japanese manufacturers are charging now. Toyota wants $70,000 + for the newly manufactured 70 series Land Cruisers... which is a car ripped straight from 40 years ago, with only an "upgraded" engine, though it is not as bulletproof as the old 70 series engines, which could run on pretty bad fuel and keep going, you don't wanna put anything but the cleanest in the new one or it will crap out on you.

@aussiefarmer6012 Год назад
@@alberttresslevic914 agreed, everyone I know with a new car with lane keeping assist turns it off. I drove a friends new outback the other day for 2 hours and they had turned everything off. There was no lights or chimes warning me about anything. My parents purchased a new top of the line MUX 6 months ago. I drove it and couldn't even get the cruise control to work normally without reading the manual. They also turned off all the tech and sold the car after 6 months of ownership. An outback is a much better car to drive than an MUX by the way. All this technology will eventually break or malfunction and in the case of the electric steering assistance could cause an accident.

During the 26 July 2005 floods (800+ people died, we had 5 to 10 feet of water on the roads) the car's only casualty was its CD player (a 10-cd changing system located under the passenger seat). Honest pricing and efficiency is the bottom line. 7.2 to 8.4 L/100km for a 2.2 litre and 125kw is quite a feat of Engineering. It's not a cheap car but a quality product priced attractively to gain a foot hold. Small hatchbacks are today priced from 34k so having an Urban SUV for 5k more is a bargain. Helps to keep those overpriced gas guzzlers in check.

Thanks for the review. I'm going to try to find one to check out today as a potential replacement to our 5 year old Wrangler. Looking forward to checking underneath to see what protection is on offer and throughout the car for quality etc. I'm particularly interested to see if the dealer knows the roof load bearing capacity as I can't fine any information online. The only thing bugging me right now is the single cup holder at the front and the tiny centre armrest storage. Hopefully it at least has the cooled glovebox like the overseas version. I'm so glad it doesn't come with all the 'non-safety' garbage. I'm sure when all that goes in, this will be thousands more expensive and of course, just like every other vehicle, won't make a single bit of difference to anyone's safety.
@therightcar

@@therightcar Well, I found one to test drive in Moorooka. Overall, for the price, it was 'fine'. I would be tempted but my wife and I both found the seats to be unacceptable. We both had sore backs after just 10 minutes and I couldn't get a good position due to the lack of reach adjustment for the steering wheel. The seats are rock hard and too narrow. They were also short in the thigh so were not supportive for me. As for everything else, well, it's $20k-$30k cheaper than the comparative vehicles, so if it works... With regards to safety, I'm just going off the number and type of accidents in Australia per capita. Over the past 20 years, they have remained almost identical. Facts, as they say, just don't care about my opinions. If all the latest safety devices had a bearing on safety, I would think it would be borne out in the data, and yet, the numbers remain unswayed. I get it, people feel safer if the car is trying to do everything for them or they don't have to pay as much attention or god forbid, take advanced driver training, but I'm old, so I like driving and am one of the freaks who thinks people should have to know how to drive, in order to attain a license to do so. I'm new to your channel and I do like how you go about your business, thanks again.

It's a pretty good product, the only concern id recommend checking out in the scorpion would be to check the dpf fluid tank which is located underneath near the rear bumper which is prone to bottom out and leak on extreme off road conditions since you're looking for a Wrangler replacement. Otherwise for onroad and occasional off-road it's great.

Are there any members here who have a similar issue and their vin number starts with MA1TK4YTTP6A With the 10th letter P indicating the year 2023 and the 12th letter A the month. I am pleased to see such an offering. This particular vehicle demonstrates an improvement in the area of car making for Mahindra. It's refreshing to see the Indians making then supplying a 4X4 for export that - at glance - doesn't say 'I'm based off a Mazda MX5; a Hyundai Tucson; Toyota Landcruiser 200. Sure there is no lane assist but sometimes technologies like lane assist betray us of the notion that safety is first and foremost the prerogative of the driver. Active safety is something that should always be driver-responsibility. I was taught by my instructor to quickly throw my head (when it is safe to do so) to see the lane that I want to transition to so as to avoid the blindside trap. To this day, I still do that. Where active safety is nigh impossible for the driver to take into his/her control (e.g abs) then the driver is excused. The lack of airbags for the third row is more of a concern but I am sure Mahindra will sort that out. As I am sure they will the lag with the reversing camera. This vehicle is indigenous from the ground up. It is sincere! It is honest. It is simpe yet arrives with more technology than my current drive - a 1997 1.3 Toyota Starlet life. On that basis I would buy the Mahindra Scorpio. P.S Lay out the data, supply the pros and cons from that data (ask questions for the benefit of the audience) and put everything into hands of the end user for they alone will sign the cheque. These you have done. Again a refreshing review.

Excellent review. My only feedback would be that the verdict section was lackluster. I would have expected a more comprehensive summary, plus your own subjective "feel," regarding the car. Are you able to review the Pikup?

Thanks mate. And look, I don’t like to make a definitive call in the verdict because by the time someone has watched that far, they will typically have made up their own mind if it’s The Right Car! But I hear you and thanks for the feedback. Some cars I’m more decisive about. But this was a launch drive and I didn’t have as much time to film and gather my thoughts as I would have otherwise. Haven’t done a PikUp yet. Have been eager to for a while!
