2023 Mazda3 G25 Evolve SP Review: a sneaky driving weapon

Mazda’s popular small car shows that style and driving fun needn’t come with a six-figure price tag 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
Most hatchbacks are designed with practicality and ease of use in mind, but the 2023 Mazda3 G25 Evolve SP takes a different tack.
It’s less concerned with boot space and comfort than with style and driver engagement, an unusual approach for what remains a volume-selling segment, but one not without merit.
While not for everyone, the 3 offers stylish looks, a high-quality interior and brilliant driving dynamics at an affordable price, albeit at the cost of practicality and vision.

I own a 2019 manual Astina hatch and I still love it.

If more space is needed, Mazda sells the 3 sedan for the same price as the hatch in identical trim grades.

the internal head liner isn't black in the sedan..!

Pretty much most of the negatives mentioned here are solved with the sedan version of this trim. I'm not sure why they use the hatch and proceed to make general statements about whether "the Mazda 3 is right for you" as a whole. It's almost like the sedan doesn't exist? Sedan offers better ride comfort, more boot space than a CX5 (M3 Sedan has 444L vs 438L in CX-5), more leg room in the back, larger rear windows so it doesn't feel small, removes the blind spots from the large pillars you get in the hatch while being just as fun to drive.

I'm not sure about Australia, but at least in Europe, where I live, sedans og hatchbacks in this segment appeal to different demographics. While also a very nice car, the sedan is the conservative choice whereas the hatch is the dynamic, sporty (and mean looking) one.

just to make everyone aware mazda here in australia has moved to 15,000 intervals since november 2022 on all non-turbo models.

Great review. Really good. Gave me everything I needed and nothing I didn't. If I was buying one, this is exactly the one and with a manual. The rear visibility is a deal breaker though (compare it to the old 323 series) and the torsion beam rear end (from multi links) is another. I've got the former in a Peugeot and it's absolute rubbish. It moves the rear end around on minor bumps...very reminiscent of a small, 70's car.

To your point, I don't like how dark the interior is. It makes it feel even smaller. And I feel like it's such a waste that the good interior materials are not accentuated with more contrasting shades. I get the exclusivity of the red+black for the higher trim, but at least put another color in there, since they already put extra efforts on the nice interior.

This is a very good review. I own a manual 2022 "3" - it does take more effort to drive than some others, but it rewards that effort. It's not a car for people who just want to go from point A to point B while talking on the phone. It is a car for people who enjoy driving. I must say that the "3" is fairly practical in comparison to a Corolla (larger boot, similar size rear space), and also has a stellar reputation for longevity and reliability (there are benefits to naturally aspirated engines!), and very strong resale values (i.e. relatively low rates of depreciation compared to an i30).

You guys made a typo on the thumbnail, it’s G25, though I hope Mazda would’ve make a G35 with some kind of 3.5 V6

Why Are You Testing Manuals ?
@vrs76r

Highway driving is excellent but city driving for my 2015 2.5l SP25 is terrible which should be same 139kw engine. It’s only done 75k km and i-stop system decides when it feels like working and even when it’s does actually work in stop start suburban traffic mine averages 11.8l/100 and thats with trying to keep revs low from take off. Recent drive from Bathurst to Sydney got me 4.5l/100 which was super impressive. Shame that 95% of my driving is city. Other issue is water leaks into the spare tyre wheel well in boot and its not been in any accidents. Water gets in through metal panels that have be pressed together just below the rear bumper level and fogs up inside of front window. Naturally Mazda don’t want to know about it now its not in warranty anymore even though the issue started in the 4th year from new and they claimed to have changed seals around the rear lights when that turns out to not be the cause. First and last Mazda for me.

Can you take off the bumper and seal all the joints ?
@vrs76r
@vrs76r Год назад
@@mvnorsel6354 Its a sedan and I have done best I can from the inside underneath the black plastic panel that sits at the bottom of the boot opening. Would not be confident taking bumper off as don’t know whats behind it with regards to sensors for air bags etc. Still leaks but it’s no longer a bird bath when its heavy rain.

Comparing crap 2015 quality to brand new is a joke , the problem you're describing are unheard of in newer years

I am so excited to see Mazda put Mazda 3 with a 2.5 Turbo engine to the Australian market before I realize it is G25 instead of G35.

Astina X20 is the only range that has a supercharger to power the Skyactiv-X but wish it had an AWD.
@apolitis1

is it me or does it look like a better exterior design version of the Mercedes A class?
@electricdiesel1993
@electricdiesel1993 Год назад
Mazda 3 Astina X20 is cooler than G25 SP, Skyactiv-X has an obvious supercharger for compression despite only 132kw for fuel economy reasons and uses premium unleaded for less emissions more performance although it needs a AWD as a supercharged hot hatch (or sedan's fastback) even though Mazda 3 2.5 turbo AWD currently reserved for the North American LHD markets.

Cracks me up when these EXPERTS comment on the Piano Black finishes in the Mazda 3 yet take a good look at all the competition out there and they are littered with these surfaces... Why the Hell don't manufacturers just stop with this insanely stupid idea of cheep shiny black plastic!

Nah, it s slow and jerky around traffics. The automatic gearbox is very lazy and woeful when it detects elevated road. It doesnt repond well to the gear shift until you hits 4.5K rpm and still in gear 1. Around the traffics is generally slow and sluggish and quite embarrassing to be beaten by an old corolla 😢. Mabe the manual is a better choice for this car and stay away from thw automatic
