Overall, it looks pretty good! Those capacitive buttons are such a disappointment though. Cars need physical controls in my opinion. I'm really liking the honest and off the cuff opinions.
How can companies to this day think capacitive buttons are a good move? Who in the universe actually likes using them, theyve always been awful in every medium.
@@MoharnabSaikia For me having physical controls is going to be a big deciding factor in my future car purchases. I wonder how many people are going to be like that though.
I think for a Nissan this is probably the best looking car they produced in years. Some minor gripes, but overall a very good option in an already busy field.
Honestly, my biggest gripe with capacitive buttons is that you can't feel where they are and they immediately activate. I firmly believe that a few raised ridges/bumps and a force sensor would go a LONG way to making them easier to use. But at that point might as well just have buttons.....
I had the chance to drive one. I think most people compare every EV vehicle to Tesla. I think even though they did a lot of things right, I believe Nissan is the real gem. If you are not interested in showing off and your goal is to reduce your personal fossil fuel consumption while having a practical vehicle, then Nissan works all day long. By the way, I did order an Ariya and look forward to taking delivery in December 2022 (aka Late Fall 2022)
It's wild to me that nobody just straight up copies Tesla's design and does just a single 15" center-mounted touchscreen with a custom OS behind it. It's much cheaper on a per-unit basis and people seem to prefer it. Stop wasting money on physical controls and just give the people what they want. *nobody except Rivian
My first test with a fwd, was not so impressive. But after a long trip in a awd, made me buy a new one. Have tested alot of ev, like polestar 2, volvo c40, ford mustang, subaru etc. But the Ariya was my favorite.
After a long search we did the same. Got the AWD which is more quick like 5 seconds quick. And wife likes sitting higher and it has tons of room.@@trumpetscall8910
I actually really like these copper/metal colors on electric cars. I think it makes them stand out. That being said, I hope more color options start popping out, bring back colorful cars.
I dont know why but I really love these auto focus videos as no gear is being used just Marques and his phone. Feels natural. A youtuber on road with his phone creating amazing contents!!
I'd love to see you do a review of the 2023 Chevy Bolt. It's definitely the most boring EV around, but for $25k, it's not terrible. Could be cool to compare it to a more expensive EV like the Hyundai Ionic 5.
@@player54ug87 I think the Bolt will be a decent upgrade from the Leaf. It is a very fun car and you feel like you can rip around the city. For daily driving it is fantastic. By far its biggest downside is the slow charging speed at 50kW. That relegates it to a city/commuter vehicle that can stretch to intercity travel, but impractical for anything above 300 miles.
@@bradhaines3142 No, not like every ev. Charging speed, battery capacity, and charging network all matter. Taking a Tesla or an F-150 Lightning on a 1000-mile road trip is totally viable. A Chevy Volt? No thanks
@@jacobkaneff8261 The audio is also directly taken from the phone recording. In the video, there's a small pop-up that says that the next video will use a small mic they bought for the phone.
The Ariya has 1 killer feature… it has a button to activate battery heating. That's something that every car in cold climates should have, since I do not want to get to a fast charger and get 30kW like I do right now with my Peugeot.
Dude, to be real. I don't think he knows much about cars. Look up other reviews. They know what they're talking about. I'm a car person myself. Ariya got way better features than his so called Hondai Ionic 5. I own few Hondai cars and their interiors are so cheap. That's why they're cheap.
I was skeptical about the size of this car until I was able to physically see & touch it at the NYAuto Show & fell in love with it! The disappointing thing about this though, is that it’s already a year behind schedule. It would be some sort of comfort to think that since it’s in your hands in NJ, that there are more on the way to the Tri-State area. I know the haptic buttons are a bust for many, but there will most likely be something about any car coming out, that everyone won’t like…just saying. The copper color has grown on me, but I’d probably still go for a Silver before that!
I like that he doesn’t try to make it look or SOUND perfect, he gives us the raw iPhone cinematic experience. Maybe the sound will be a little windy, but it comes off as real
Really, really glad to see consistency with the new channel. I actually like the color of this one, but looking on the site I'd definitely go with the blue. It also seems like it would've been a simple thing to add some type of rise or ledge to prevent stuff from rolling onto the driver side. It's way too easy for something to get lodged under the pedal.
I’ve had a new Leaf since January and when people ask me about it I explain that it’s totally niche needs. For instance, it’s only for all the local driving, school, work, stores etc…so it’s not for road trips. I actually love it. As for the Ariya, Probably not. Too expensive for just everyday driving and still not good for road trips. My leaf doesn’t have those stupid buttons either. Don’t get caught up in luxury too much, pseudo or otherwise cause most people are just going to be surviving the next 5 years or so.
Really REALLY enjoying this new channel. One of my favourites on RU-vid almost instantly. Love the filming style, love the car choices. Really great. Thanks Marques
Just subscribed and have watched all the videos, simple & concise format which detail the parts you want to know about without being too long, EV's are taking off in the UK so its good to know what coming down the line & what we won't be getting (unless you pay premium to your chosen car dealer) keep up the good work
I really like the exterior look and the phone hideaway charger that forces you to use the screen rather than check your phone all the time. The cup holder, I like that it has that accordion cover, adds a sleekness to the interior, and the floor space, I like it, but agree that things will slide around.
This design is pretty sweet. I like the copper, but I'd love to see them change the inside accents to match the exterior colors... I get if they don't, but still I got the chance to try out a rental Leaf a few weeks ago and while I loved it, the charging experience was definitely disappointing. I don't know if that's a Nissan thing or just an EV thing, but I'm hoping they improve the speeds
There are lots of issues. The vehicle itself, and also the charging network you’re using. Dude is rich and used to his $120k Tesla and the Tesla network. Their charging network is leaps and bounds better than any other charging network. The Ionic 5 and EV6 can both charge from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes which is insanely fast! It’s awesome. But, realistically, you’re not going to find many 350 kw chargers (that function) to get those times. At some stations if a second car starts charging it limits power output. Many stations are basically broken. Any combination of a specific port not working to the payment stuff not working. Sometimes it’s the handshake between the port and the car. The edge that Tesla has is that it’s THEIRS. There is a standard and everything uses the same tech to communicate with everything else. The same port. The same handshake between the car and charger. The east ability to track if a car has a problem with a charger and create a ticket if there is an issue (that’s harder if there are a dozen ways things could go wrong and be the fault of the car maker, or the car owner).
The Leaf is a good budget car, but yes the charging sucks because they didn't want to add more costs. It's kinda like the same experience with the Bolt EVs, budget car with reasonable speeds for the price, but nothing compared to the Ultium powered car charge rates. The Ariya is supposed to get better speeds
Technology connections just did a great video about this, if you have a house where you can plug into an outlet and charge, EVs are pretty easy to use 95% of the time. If you can get a NEMA 1450 outlet installed you can charge any EV from 0-100% overnight. Charging on road trips is gonna be difficult for several more years
@@tyrelirwin it's really not about CCS as a standard. All 250kW superchargers in Europe are CCS and the experience difference with the "competition" is the same as in the US. No, it's about the ease of use, reliability and the level of maintenance on the Tesla superchargers. There are smaller new players like NedFast that are pretty good as well though.
Glad you launched this channel - I think a lot of car reviewers are still thinking about how cars have been for decades vs how cars will be going forward. There's a lot of innovation that will lead to the demise of some car makers so having a tech forward person like yourself giving your perspectives is great. But... I think what has made MKBHD so great is that the production quality has made it easy to follow your thoughts and observations. You're sorting out the audio quality (thank goodness), but some comparison graphics (range, charge speed, price, cargo space, intangibles like ADAS or voice recognition) make it a lot easier to see the comparisons you're making. I get that you're wanting this channel to be different in that it's more casual, stream of thought content, but I think adding a little more meat will add weight to these vids and make these a "must stop to watch" like your main channel. My 2 cents...
Wind noise still ruining the video. Yes, anyone can create a RU-vid channel in 2022 but he's not anyone, he has the funds, the equipment and an amazing team. Apple will not create a cheap phone to show it can be done.

That load area in the footwell is def going to be an issue, from driving vans with that same sort of open footwell youve got to be really careful with how you secure your bag or whatever other kit you might keep there cause it can just skate about there if you don't, not something you want happening near the pedals. Wouldve probably been better if they had some sort of partition on the drivers side at least. Anyway, love the new channel, have always been a fan of your presentation style so having a car channel with you at the helm is great!
Actually personally love that open approach. There's plenty of other places to store bags. Reminds me of all the bench seat trucks and cars pre 1980s. Used to love being able to manspread, for lack of a better term, in my 75 F150. Heck, you could drive with your left foot as an automatic. My 23 bolt pins my legs in.
Thank you for another dope video Marques, just a suggestion, could you put the specific smartphone you are shooting the video with in each video, it could help us to see the minor video differences between phones :)
These reviews are great - An annoying thing Ive heard you mention a lot is the lack of knobs and buttons, and I can see how frustrating that would become - When I eventually go electric that will be the first thing I look for - thanks 👍🏾
Loving how every traditional car manufacturers are using EV as a soft reboot or complete redesign of their cars. More varieties and functions are most welcomed! ⚡
They haven't added anything new so where's the reboot "more functions" they are literally taking good things and making them worse aka removing actual buttons and replacing them with touch fingerprint magnet garbage buttons
i just got myself a 2020 nissan versa sv. i'm a toyota person but i def dropped the gun too fast at the lot and it’s what i ended up leaving the lot with, LOL but I am grateful. This car ended up being so perfect for me. All glory to god! i have videos of my car on my channel too, videos about the process of getting my car, decorating my car etc.. love these type of videos.
Great video MKB! For me being a Nissan fan / owner of four previous models (2012 Versa / 2017 Sentra/ 2019 Altima Platinum / 2020 Rogue sport SL) this EV felt like a natural progression for me as my first EV and next family vehicle (I will be purchasing the Platinum e-4orce AWD model.) I really feel like it is a major step up in fit and finish, just like each of my leveled up models over the past few years and is nearing Infinity luxury level quality but in a Nissan branded product. I also really like how the interior is new but feels distinctively Nissan. One major owner benefit will also be with where I live the closest Tesla Service center is more than 60 miles / 1 hour away, where my local Nissan dealer is 15 mins away. So when cross shopping with the model Y the positive ownership experience of my previous Nissans was a big selling point for me and ease of access for repairs. I also know that Tesla offers mobile service repairs but I am thinking about major service issues that require taking the vehicle in. Thanks for a great video and letting me share a current Nissan owner’s thoughts.
Nissan brand loyal here previously owning Quest, Sentra, Pathfinder, Altima, a few Versas and 2 Leafs. Glad Nissan somehow stays out of the fray with other manufacturers and soldiers on... fab cars‼️
We shopped for and compared EVs for a long time. We ended up on the fence between ID.4, Ioniq 5/6, EV6, and Ariya. I was surprised, but after re-test-driving those, we choose the Ariya, because going back and forth, we noticed the interior quality difference, the comfort and the design. We're still very happy with our choice. The max charging rate may be lower than the Hyundai and Kia, but that only matters on a long road trip, and Ariya's charging curve is smoother, and fast-charging speed on a long road trip being slightly slower, is much less important to us than how comfortable we are sitting in the car for hours.
Nissan's max charging rate is regulated to prolong the battery life as much as possible. Frequent DC fast-charging is what degrades the battery health, so it's designed like that for a reason. Some automakers encourage fast-charging because they know they'll be able to make more money from eventual battery replacement or new car purchases. I don't think it's a good business practice.
Having owned several Leafs in the past then this car is interesting to former Nissan owners. I have had a bad experience with VW products so the ID range is not an option for me. Kia and Hyundai on the other hand have been great for the past decade or so. The Leaf has been great as a "2nd car" at home (24/30kWh) or main family "city car" (40/60kWh). There is simply nothing that seems to go wrong (or terribly wrong), just add electricity and then drive. The Ariya has more of the "gismo-stuff" that could perhaps fail... Still I'll definitely take it for a test drive when it will finally come to dealers.
Nice review. I'm a Nissan fan ever since watching my Mom's Nissans go into the 200,000s of miles. Still, I wonder "what was Nissan thinking with this design"? Considering the gulf that separates companies' implementation of various tech, It would be great to have a segment addressing this and what goes into the development of a successful product vs. a dud.
i had a nissan rouge, 2013 with 136k on it and spent 4000 fixing it and it had another few thousand worth of problems when i sold it. oh and the paint literally blew away in the wind. im not even counting the full repaint it needed, the issues were all mechanical
I ordered and signed for the Ariya Platinum AWD e-4ORCE/Performance with the extended battery range. The color is white with the black roof line. I took the Nappa leather option. I presently have the 2022 Pathfinder Platinum 4WD. I will be keeping the Pathfinder for long trips, going through heavy snow storms, towing a trailer, and for going on back roads in the country.
I do love copper, it's one of my favorite metals, so I think that part looks great. I don't care for the fascia too much. The capacitive buttons in the fake wood trim are really cool, assuming the labels don't wear off, but radio and climate control need real knobs.
I like you’re reviewing cars slightly different to others. Most reviews will spend majority of time describing on road characteristics and how the car behaves when you put your foot down. But for a car like this, I don’t care how it drives as long as it is reasonably comfortable and gets me from A to B. The important stuff are day to day living with the car. That’s using all the stuff inside.
@@enlighteneddoggo5803 I think he means that there is an abundance of those, and less about interior function. Doug Demuro does a good job of both though imo
just took one of these for a test drive at NISSAN YOKOHAMA, my E NV200 was getting some factory stuff done, the Ariya is OOOWWWKAAYYY, I had 3 leafs and nissan is in a stall right now, cause Toyota is leaning on the Japanese GOV to do hybrids, everything over here is stuck in 50KW charger speed, but there are chargers all over, and they always work!!!!. there is a heavy push for hydrogen cars, I'm loaning my van to a guy that has one for a day to tryout. I'd gladly share the impression. great vids bro
Thanks for the new channel, love it. I would like to see a comparison of plug in hybrids, Im not ready for full electric and looking to plug in hybrid for next car.
I actually like the way it looks. I think it looks better than the Ionic 5 and ID4. I own 2 Nissans and want my next car to be an EV. However, I'm not sure it stacks up practically to its competitors.
@SwallowingTheRabbitWhole If you pause the video at 2:06 you can tell it's a iPhone 13 Pro with the dBrand Something skin applied to it in the reflections. I doubt dbrand will make that special edition skin for the 14 since the hype has died out for the Nothing Phone
@SwallowingTheRabbitWhole Also at the 5:00 mark, the Apple watch has a date of Thursday the 25th on it, so this was filmed way before Apple even announced the new iPhones and a day after the event was announced and invites given, they give out the phones after the event
I saw this for the first time today in Storm Gray(ish). It was stunning, which is why I'm looking at vids for this car. I'm very impressed, even with seeing the copper for the first time.
I think he missed the biggest flaw which is that you have to go to the highest model to get AWD and that’s $59,000. So out the door you’ll be over $60,000. I agree with him that the Ioniq 5 has it beat in styling. I’m also a not a fan of the capacitive buttons, but I think the VW ID wins the prize for dumbest controls. The Ioniq 5 looks cool on the inside and has real buttons. I think the whole “It’s and EV so it needs futuristic impractical controls” is a mistake. Finally it’s such a crazy time for cars it’s hard to evaluate this as dealerships still don’t have inventory and are still marking up cars. The Ariya feels kind of late to the game to me.
"I think the whole 'It’s and EV so it needs futuristic impractical controls' is a mistake." I'd bet it isn't even that, but simple cost cutting - less components and cheaper to assemble. I have a friend that does cybersecurity audits for big european car brands, the stories of penny pinching in this industry are insane. I guess it makes sense when you'll be manufacturing a model for years, those little savings add up... but still, it sucks that they do it even when it is a considerable detriment to the user experience. I'd rather pay a bit more and have good ol' physical buttons, at least for the frequently used stuff.
@@KRYMauL because Infiniti is making one for themselves next year. You heard it first. How Hondai uses cheap material so that's why it's cheaper. The Pathfinder killed the Hondai Palisade. The Altima killed their Sonata that they had to keep redesigning.
Not bad. I love the copper. I bet those capacitive buttons don't make it to production. You need to be able to find buttons in a car without looking at them. Great review!
Hey man, quite good presentation, but please include also test drive in your video to also talk about it and to show for example if it's quiet inside when you drive and overall driving experience. I think it would increase test quality a lot :)
I have a Performance Model Y, but I LOVE seeing new EVs. most other Tesla owners I talk to tend to feel the same. it's great to see new EVs, even if some of them are kinda meh, more options is inherently beneficial. Can't wait to see more. Also, LOVE the channel, can't wait to see more from the new camera rig too.
My wife owns a Pathfinder, my daughter owns a Versa and I own a Frontier Pro-4X, so yeah, we're a Nissan family. This looks good, so there's good chance my family will pick this up in the future. Nice work Marques!!
never really cared about the mic creators used, but this is the first time i understood why you guys buy a dedicated mic. The audio when you flip the phone is terrible, when it's facing you, it's fine. Good to know you bought a mic. :)
I have been for a test drive in an Ariya, lovely in gunmetal grey/gray. Also tried a Model 3, IONIQ 5, EV6 (sat in) and Polestar 2. (Model Y next week!) Ariya has a presence that is hard to explain, both outside and inside. Beautifully designed and engineered. Superb driving position and very quiet. Capacitive buttons are the only UX flaw - I have had the 2018 Leaf and have a 2011 Leaf now as a local runabout, and both have tactile controls, so no idea why Neeeesan (!) tried to put visual appeal over driver safety. When you are driving and want to change drive mode, you are forced to look down at the centre console to find the touch control, as opposed to just feeling for a mechanical knob or button like in the Leafs and Polestar etc. Hopefully Nissan will fix the charging speed and ergonomics in the next model revision. However, I would still consider buying one because of the ride and known Nissan build quality and reliability. And I have an idea for how to mod the touch controls using my electronics experience. :)
love this channel and how its all done on a phone, i only wish the audio was a little better. dunno if im particularly sensitive to it, but listening to these vids with a pair of headphones is hard at times due to the audio constantly switching ears and sounding very tinny. other than that, great stuff per usual
The major drawback IMO is the lack of one pedal driving, the car won’t come to a complete stop when you lift off the accelerator. My 2022 Leaf has full one pedal driving.
@@jamesengland7461 Two Pedal driving allows for more freedom of movement with a car. I don't think that electric cars can ever beat a gas car in that regard. Hydrogen is just as good, but a few decades away. Rn, if anyone wants a car, I would recommend the Z series from Nissan. Can't go wrong.
Awesome channel! When I first saw this car, I didn’t know what to think of it. It’s such a huge step away from traditional Nissan design standards - in a good way. Honestly, I think it looks good and overall a great EV😉
I just don't understand why manufacturers haven't just completely nailed the infotainment software yet. They've had decades. They have plenty of examples showing how it should be done. And yet it seems like every new car that gets released by legacy manufacturers has a completely new system. No lessons learned.
@@vp5429 Knobs and buttons might help in certain places, but nobody is going back to the old style radio with 20 buttons setup. It's just inferior to something like Apple car play.
I don't find it compelling for $50K. The outside is nice,I think I may like it more than you did, but I agree that the ID4 is better looking. Inside, it's quite slick but execution is lacking in some areas. The touch hapatic buttons on the dash and center console need to go as soon as possible. Not functional when driving and your forced to take your eyes off the road. I'd be surprised if it lasted more than a couple of years. Center, floor, portion ahead of the center console should have a large one inch indent so that handbags and back packs don't move around. They missed a big one here. It's not expensive to do and would be enormously handy. Seats look quite dope for a small SUV. For price and charging, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 charge MUCH faster, a factor for trips of any kind. The EV-6 is closer to $40K and has a nice interior and the dash is already sorted out well. The Ioniq 5 has the most interesting exterior imo. Nice review Marques! I just subbed to AF. Look forward to more!
Do you need a front trunk? The space for it doesn’t come from no where. Every car that has one, COULD use that space for other things. I’d rather have more interior space than a secondary trunk space. Right? It’s less useful and less convenient than a regular trunk. It may be a little more secure (a smash and grab can get into the front and ear seats, and fold down the rear seats and get into the trunk), but I’ve not heard a reviewer talk about that one way or the other.
@@zero11010 From what many have said who actually own EVs with (useful) frunks, they say they’d rather not go back to a car without one. Even Sandy Munro, a renowned engineer, echos the same sentiment. He believes that manufacturers such as VW just didn’t want to design vehicles with frunks not because they wanted to provide more cargo space in the trunk, but because it’s more difficult and they didn’t want to go through the trouble. Not to mention, the frunk in something like an F-150 Lightning is amazing. Having lived with a Model 3 for 5 days after renting in on Turo, we used the frunk more than a few times for certain things. Lastly, not putting so much of the electronics directly under the hood allows for a better crumple zone on frontal impacts.
@@zero11010 when you park your car, you park in reverse as this is easier. When you come back to the car with a shopping cart, the frunk is just ready for use.
Seems like some nice work from Nissan, but if I was comfortable with capacitive buttons I’d just settle for a Model Y at that price, tactile buttons are still important for me. 11:24 I hope you end up doing a collab with The Kilowatts. I’ve been following Ryan’s videos since we met while working in Tesla and he left to focus on his channel and electric rental fleet, he’s grown a lot both as a creator and growing his network in the electric vehicle space. Could be interesting to see the contrast between your take on vehicles from a customer experience perspective and Ryan’s from a fleet managers perspective in the same video.
50 grand is way rough for that car. Figured that would be the case from a glance and your video was as expected. Not a great offering from Nissan, but Nissan has been struggling for a long time now. That aside, really loving the AF channel, Marques. Your tech reviews are a go to so to see you run some dedicated car videos with an entry level format is awesome. Please don't stop.
Humble suggestion: I’d love to see you use the AirPods or even the wired apple headphones to show how they would work for videos. As for the car, I’m curious to see it’s long term abilities over the others. That’ll be the big test
@@JeffreyHeydenKaye i mean sure but all that airpods give you is the ability to record from a distance and have audio. There's a thousand lapel mics out there that will do an equal/better job of that for less.
If this is shot on iPhone 14 (he shoots on iPhones for this channel if you didn't already know), I'm *very* impressed. The video quality here seems vastly improved from the previous Hummer video, and is more smoothly shot with less shaking (although it may be in a gimbal so who knows). Curious if he'll let us know on one of his channels or the podcast.
Another dope vid. I'm impressed by sunroofs and noting that EVERYONE has cool sunroof FEATURES like opening and closing and an auto Sun shade - except Tesla. It's definitely not a deal breaker but I'm about to buy a premium electric vehicle for commercial purposes. So far, it's MY and some close seconds: Lyric (loved your review), Volvo, Benz, and a quirky one - Toyota Rav 4 PHEV (top trim).
I have to say the Ariya has grown on me. It does look much more muscular/lean with the optional 20” wheels tho. But its interior is REALLY nice and high quality, especially in the blue leather option. It should be noted that Nissan decided to program the Ariya to charge at its max charge rate longer than an overall higher number. So it may not reach the peak of cars like the Ioniq 5/EV6 when charging, but it will charge at a more steady rate close to its peak, vs hitting the peak and tapering off. Still won’t be as quick to charge as those, but I don’t think it will be as slow as one might think.
The copper looks sick. I love that. I do that in my first house I bought last year. With the 120 year old nice wood and stone. Copper and brass I always thought looked flashy, but homey at the same time.
