Let’s just appreciate that we live in a time where 400hp is considered the lower end of “sports” cars. Imagine 30 years ago telling our grandparents/parents that their 200 hp Camaro would be considered slow and would be beat by a Japanese import .
It's cause of their weight and engine placement. Cars have gotten more fat over the years, Porsche is a pretty good example of keeping low HP but better engine placement and speed. Most of them are under 400hp but can hit 0-60 in 4-5 sec
@@invalidusername_5101 it's true.. whether you except it or not, Lexus/Infinite/Acura cant match their European counters parts (Bimmers, Benz, Alfa Romeo, Audi) when it comes to performance. But Asian luxury sporty cars are more reliable for sure. On the other hand American brand doesn't excell in performance nor in reliability (Cadillac blackwings, and few muscle cars worth more than $75k maybe can hang in performance wise)
@@soysoloe1919 lots of g37 owners have done a vr transmission swap. For automatic it does great 👍 and plus that’s a slow car not in the same league as these
Infiniti messed up when they renamed their entire line up "Q". Any legacy from the G or FX was tossed. It got even more confusing when they renamed the G37 the Q40 in the final year, while concurrently selling its successor, the Q50. At the time people thought Q was for the flagship sedan, the Q45, which they discontinued.
I put a giant android tablet screen in my Q60S RS and it makes all the difference, especially with all of the interior carbon fiber accents. My 2019 has been mistaken for a new car by a few people I've had in it
The Q60 with the old "jatco 7speed" still did good, considering that the Z is almost 500lbs lighter. if the Z had the 6speed that Q60 would have won from a dig and roll.
@@Cali4nium I mean of course, if you want a faster 0-60 A/T is where it's at. But I'm picking up that 400z in a 6 speed, any day over the Infiniti for spirited and fun driving. Then I'm picking a 6 speed A90 GR Supra over either of these options after. Although that blue leather in the Z, is an underrated color choice for leather.
ima disagree with you on that one, more gears doesn't always mean faster. the older 7 speed automatic was dual clutch and if tuned properly was and still is a great transmission. still quicker than a Manuel.
The Z has been a disappointment so far. The only race I've seen it constantly win is against the Stinger. It pretty much loses against everything unless it starts from a roll :(
Discontinued after 22 model. I agree, car had so much potential. Sadly just weren’t selling a lot. Infiniti is focusing on their suvs and crossovers. That’s what sells. I’m sure they will kill the q50 soon too. But, you don’t see many of these on the road. Wouldn’t be a bad car to buy used.
These engines also make more than 400hp The vr30 makes around 380whp stock and 350wtq stock so it's definitely underrated I own a q60 redsport love it and a jb4 will make it beat alot of v8s stock and should help it keep up with the new Z which weighs less than my awd q60
I've been waiting on the race for a long time!!!! Maybe if the Q60 wasn't a awd would of been a close race, 500lbs is a lot to carry! But overall good video!
@@DareAjStash awd is better for traction but the added weight hurt it from a roll race. Neither is really better or worse but the RWD model needs a good LSD to handle that much power.
In the 3rd roll labeled "manual shift", the Q didn't manual shift. The race where he did manual shift, he tends to short shift. That race might be even closer with better shifting.
Seriously thanks for this, I think it's weird no one has thought about comparing the performance on these two cars since the z launched, I feel people who shop for the z also consider the q60
@@thinkfast469 nah dont worry, never buy a new one get used. I work at Infiniti and they are too much brand new. I got my preowned one for a bargain and love that damn thing
@@Midnightvq Well...although our pursuits and passions may be similar, we're not all 25. 😉 Gotta still be a little civil, as an arriver. From all of us that drive the grocery gitters...if we can burn it down, it's not a true sports car. 🤙 ✌️
I own an ra500 q60 and I gotta be honest.. seeing how well the rs did to against the new z made me kinda sad. Was hoping for more from the z. Can't wait to see the z with more upgrades.
I mean same power in a slightly lighter package with a bit better transmission. Makes total sense the Z would only be a bit faster, as you know the VR30 isn’t a slouch even in stock form.
Cool to see. My ex wife ( 05 G35) and me (06 350Z) would often race the cars to see how they stacked up. Can confirm, exactly what happened here will happen for the next decade plus.
We all can agree. When you buy the new Z, first thing is Tire’s you must get better tire’s. Then second is suspension. Cause with better tire’s the Z is definitely a scary car off the dig
Ok, got the jump on the Z. That's about it though. AWD vs RWD advantage from a standstill but weight and more gears shines through on the roll. That dead-to-rights first roll in auto shift, ya...you can physically see the Q60 slow down. Always fun racing with you Sam. Thanks again for letting me be a part of this! BTW for those wondering and for clarity. Heat exchanger and intakes from Burger Motorsports (the same company that makes the JB4) and 3" non resonated lower down pipes and 3" CBE from AAM Competition, known for their aftermarket support of the GTR.
You do know that you went from a factory true cold air intake, to a hot air intake, right? They even tested a bunch of aftermarket intakes for the Q50/60. All the one's they tested actually made the car loose power and torque. AMS was the only one to improve, over the factory intakes and that was in the top end. I just put the BMS inlets on my Q50RS, as the improvement of the air flow, over the ribbed tubing, is where the increase is being made.
@@SnakeDoctor5104 Fully aware, I wanted to get more intake noises though. That was achieved. I'll likely change it up if and when I tune. For now, the intake noise with the AAM chaos out back is tremendous. Keep in mind, its only hot and humid for 4 of the 12 months of the year where I am, so "hot intake" is mitigated by generally cooler outside air.
@@SnakeDoctor5104 the bms ones were fine, when i had them. Best setup tested is the full bms inlet with the k ans n drop ins and factory boxes but the "heat" from the bms didnr makw a huge difference for everyday spirited driving and they sounded super good. I could see if you wanna squeeze out every inch of power possible but the real caveat is that shitbox 7speed, anyway.
I'm not sure if I missed it, but in all of the races, I didn't see any paddle shifting by the q60.. was he in auto mode for all of the races? Just seems a but sluggish.
Sam If you ever need another Infiniti, I have a fully stock 4d AWD Infiniti RS , with Michelin Pilot Sport-tires , no run-flats. No tune. Hit me up anytime
When I first heard about the z and watched it's reveal I was really considering buying one but it looks way better on paper and it's constantly being shown as a disappointment when it's actually on the road
I have to agree with you. It's a nice car and I was really hoping it would be as good or better than the Mk5 Supra but out of the 2 cars I'd happily have the Toyota.
@@desirabledrives44 but when was the z ever better than the Supra? Even with them both in their prime, arguably in the mid to late 90s, the Supra has always been quicker/ faster
@@desirabledrives44 In Australia (in the state of NSW), the Supra GST is AUD $104,415 (USD $70,163) drive-away (there is no dealer mark-up). The Nissan Z (similar model to the USA Nissan Z Performance) is AUD $80,114 (USD $53,833) drive-away (there is no dealer mark-up). Although the Supra has better overall performance, the Nissan Z seems to be better value with it being about AUD $23,000 less than the Supra.
Sad to see the Q50 and Q60 retired, so close to being a BMW killer. But fell short. Own a Q50 3.5 natural aspirated car, loved it. What we don’t talk about on these channels is long term maintenance costs and up keep. Love to see 3 plus year of ownership reviews, of Infiniti vs BMW. Hope the next gen. electric cars pulls Infiniti back in the sport sedan. seems they are sinking the research and design into the cross over QX60 vs a car I bought for performance with lower long term maintenance, than those off the lot beauties!
I’ve had my BMW m240i for 3 years and it’s been modded for two years and I haven’t had any problems with the car it’s all been regular maintenance so far
OK for anyone who drives Infiniti you knew it would lose the roll why? Because Infiniti drivers no Infinitis have a slight lag when you mash the gas after being at an consistent speed. Now had he let go and then mashed the gas it would've been closer. Basically treat it like a manual. I my self am an Infiniti owner. I figured this out from test driving multiple models. Never the less I love Infiniti they get moving once they get going for a luxury car
I mean we all knew it would loose the roll because they both have the same engine and the Z weighs 500lbs less… The faster shifting transmission and slightly more responsive turbo don’t hurt but they are just a small part of the story.
Any chance you guys can run a 400z with just a tune vs some of cars it's lost against? Like the mustang gt, srt from a stop? Would be cool to see since I've seen the tunes are adding like 40whp
That would require someone with a Z in our area that has it tuned. Since Nissan hasnt delivered a SINGLE Z to its Canadian customers, this is just not possible for now.
Dude in the q60 kept shifting early Asf obviously the Z will be faster cause it’s lighter but dude In the q needs to learn when to actually shift plus this race would have been better if it was a rwd q50 which is just over 3700
WOW, literally AWD vs RWD & Automatic vs Manual. This was so close, even though both are brother cars. IMO, the Q60 is closer to being a "mini GT-R" because it is AWD. Hey Sam, can you advise where this track is located at? Is this a private track?
Nissan is one of my favorite Japanese brands. The 400z is beautiful but I feel that it lacks power or to optimize it better, and reduce the weight of the vehicle
Keenly interested in this. I've done enough of these that if it over revs it bogs down and the car will shift automatically. Are you expecting a wildly different result. Gimme the break down of perfect rpm shift points so I can drag as much power out of this thing.
Because the transmission has a bit of delay between shifts so you need to do it earlier to shift on time. It's annoying at first but not thay big of a deal
@@jimwallace4579tbh the last roll would of been much closer if the Q60 was being shifted at redline, but either way Z should still be faster because its lighter and better trans🤷🏽♂️
Surprised that Infinity doesn't have a luxury super car like the NSX... interesting race. The Z probably has a higher rpm range which gave it the advantage on the roll race.
I'm confused. Previously, the owner of the Q replied to my comment about having a Heat Exchanger, but you said it only has CAI and an exhaust. Even with CAI, without a heat exchanger, the car is dog water after a pass or two. I hope he sees this and replies. I'm also curious on if the Z suffers from this issue as well.
CAI is window dressing on the VR30 - the stock airboxes and cold air ducting do very well vs aftermarket CAIs unless its tuned, and even then it's only a 10-15 hp advantage at the very top of the rev range, where the small Garrett squirrels aren't their most efficient for boosting.
Heat exchanger doesn't add power. The intakes only add some noise. The LDPs and CBE helps for sure, but without a tune and the slushbox 7AT, there's not a lot of hope against the Z on a roll, esp with the weight difference. Theres a ton of yabbering in the comments about my short shifting, even if I nailed it perfectly to the satisfaction of all you people, it wasnt going to win a 1/4 mile roll race. The Q60 is too heavy and has VR30 has insufficient torque to pull all its mass. This year alone I raced the M240i, Camaro LT1, Mustang 5.0, Audi S5, Audi RS5, Jag F-Type, TLX Type S, Benz c43 and Chevy SS (not yet uploaded) on this channel and lost almost all the roll races. Pretty much sums up the weakness of the powertrain on a roll. Dig races, it held up with MOST of those listed cars. But ya, unless its tuned and you start getting at the internals beyond FBO, its not THAT fast. I'm sure the Z will suffer from the same heat soak issues, but from the content I've seen online from US based YT'er and automotive channels, its responding very well to FBO and tune, AMS had their Z in the 9's like a minute after they got it.
@@jimwallace4164 Thank you for the reply, but I don't understand your response. I am referring to being able to do multiple pulls, which the Heat exchanger allows. I thought I made that clear when I said "the car is dog water after a pass or two". Heat Exchanger allows you to utilize the power you already have for multiple runs. So I don't see the correlation between your reply and my comment. I never mentioned power gains, but the vr30 gets "heat soaked" extremely easily and without a heat exchanger, after a pull or two the car struggles. Your entire reply doesn't address my comment... I am well aware of this platform. I was disappointed in my purchase when I got my RS. I am now at 500whp full E-85 because it was so lack luster stock. The reason I asked about the Z was because I was curious on if Nissans addressed the issues that the Q had. You shouldn't have to purchase an additional $800 component to do the bare minimum. Oh and yes the car is very heavy, your tire and wheel combo alone is around an additional 65lbs each. I do appreciate the response, unfortunately you never answered my questions... I don't remember cause I haven't been stock in awhile, but I believe short shifting is preferred as you see more heat and no gains after 5500 rpm. So tell those commenters to just "shhhh".
@@AddictusSaevire Z has the same XE from the factory as the Q models, if I am not mistaken. Honestly, I haven't measured sufficiently the results of pre-XE and post-XE installation, but I'm sure it helping to avoid heat soak - otherwise whats the point right? Keep in mind when we shoot these videos, the cars are only doing 3 or 4 passes before we're done. In the case of the Z, Sam ran it that weekend against of bunch of cars with a variety of results (some have yet to be posted). Simply based on the number of races, Sam may want to group them together. Over one weekend, he had 9 or 10 different cars out against it. Additionally, it was cold that weekend (late fall in Ontario Canada). The Z didnt appear to suffer from heat soak issues from what I saw. Curious, what is your mod list to get you to 500whp.
@@jimwallace4164 The factory Heat Exchanger does the bare minimum to prevent your car from turning into a snail with regular commuting, let alone spirited driving or full WOT pulls. As these vehicles can suffer from heat greatly. I also think its a financial decision to save money. As AMS is sponsored by Nissan and you can get the ***EXACT*** same Heat Exchanger, built by AMS from Infiniti with the only difference being the AMS logo vs the Infiniti logo as an upgrade option from the dealership. This also applies to the CAI as well. These cars are made just well enough to sell. So like I said, after 1 or 2 passes (depending on outside temps) the car suffers. Some places might not even get 1 pull on a hot day. Or on a decent day with a spirited commute. Do you have a Dragy? You should monitor your stats with the dragy with each pull to see the decline. I live in the Northwest (Oregon U.S.) even on cooler days I got heatsoak stock. Regarding my upgrades I have the AMS Intakes, AMS Heat Exchanger (version 1), AMS 3″ catted Full Downpipes, AMS RA338 HPFP (NOT THE 405), AMS Low Pressure Fuel Pump, AMS Flex Fuel Kit w/ Ethanol Content Sensor, AMS High Pressure Fuel Sensor, Red Alpha Fuel Filter Kit, AMS Stage 1 Direct Injectors, OEM Infiniti Fuel Rail (Right) OEM Infiniti Fuel Rail (Left), EcuTek ECU (Bluetooth) Stillen CBE (not the best for power especially for price) and AMS E-85 Tune. What isn't discussed much is the preventative purchases. Like buying new Injectors and OEM fuel rails etc... I spent an extra $2k on preventative measures, because our car doesn't really like ethanol. Found the diagrams for the new Z, will link if you want... they listened to feedback and upgraded the Z's cooling from the Q. It does not heatsoak as easily.
Not really no, it’s more or less a Z in a tux, which I don’t mean as an insult the Z is usually a damn good car. The GT-R R35 is the successor to the Skyline it just sadly moved farther up market. Although Nissan does call the Q50/60 the Skyline in Japan.
hang on, how are they listed at the same power when the Q60s has mods? The intake and exhaust with even the most conservative of tunes would be and extra 20-25 horsepower, surely?
Intake provides no power gains, only installed it for intake noises to make the drive more fun to listen to. No tune. The AAM LDP and CBE does increase HP, but its marginal at best. The XE doesn't add power, merely keeps things running cool.
Nissan Z and BMW m240i in Canada cost the exact same. Used to have a new 370z. But bmw is seen in my near future, c43amg coupe is just too expensive. Lexus coupe would have been nice but it's too expensive and slow as hell
Great video. Thanks for bringing us such great content. However, it just needs to be said that the new Z is just pathetic because it just spins too much. That car is SO MUCH lighter and yet it just can’t do anything from a dig at all. It makes a good drifting car but not much else from a dig.
