@@romans1461 Is that an invite? I'll come do better. Several of those Mustang shifts were bogged. Final race saw much better shifts, which made all the difference.
@@sbreezy7196 has to be because I drove my buddy's 2024 GT which is manual and it's nowhere near as slow as what they're making it out to be in this video. I'm also wondering if he had the car in sport mode instead of normal to allow better power transfer.
@HelicopterDad-xk5sx rice boy, LOL, original. Lots of perf 2.0L Turbos to shame many V8's, just a fact and FWIW I'm 53 yrs old and grew up in the D. Heard the same sh!t when I had my 87' GN from 1995-2000, many Big blocks humbled ❗️
The GT Mustang and Dark horse both weigh 4000 lbs in C&D tests. Also, in the SG comparo. Not anywhere close to 3700 lbs. It is still the same weight as the Mach 1 was almost 4000 lbs as well so not much different other than being slightly bigger. Sam almost always gets the weight wrong. The size is big at 190 inches. The Z weighs around 3600 lbs and not 3300 lbs. Having said that, Sam's shifting is very slow. I went and got a snack in the middle of each shift.
Kind of don't blame him shifting this car like that, the transmission is shit and will break if you go to hard on it because having aluminum shift forks was a smart idea
No replacement for displacement doesn't mean anything anymore. The nissan Z was right next to the pony. This ain't the early 2000s anymore. Nowadays Having a N/A V8 powered car doesn't mean you'll beat everybody.
@@vintagetriplex3728 still the same principle when it's a n/a V8 making 480 hp vs a twin turbo V6 making 400hp...take the turbos off the Z it makes probably 270 maybe 290 while the mustang would make 700+ hp with a twin turbo set up...that saying goes until the end of time...no doubt...No replacement for displacement before u bring up the 911 saying it's a n/a 6 cylinder it makes 518hp while the n/a V8 of the Corvette z06 makes 670 hp unfortunately
The Dark Horse and the gt premium both have rear stabilizers. He came nowhere near wheel hop, he would have to be using launch control and actually have his foot in the gas.
Couple things 1. Your shifting is on the slow side costing precious tenths. Swap drivers and try again. 2. You keep bouncing off the limiter costing you precious tenths again. Shift just before that limiter.
I drove a 2016 GT w/MT for about four years. When Ford came out with the second gen S550 in 2018, they reworked the Coyote V8, upping the compression ratios and adding direct injection on top of the port injection on the previous version. They also reworked the gear ratios on the manual transmission on the GT's. The end result was, even though the new engine produced about 20 more hp, the car's total performance did not improve much. There were many who believed it would have been much better off with the previous years gears.
The last two races seemed like the only one's that Sam shifted the Mustang @ a high enough RPM. These mustangs Love high RPM shift's= just before the rev. Limiter.
Yes Mustangs and Ford in general shifts high rpm just before it goes into the next gear. I've had many Fords. It kicks up just before a gear and you have to be powering through to not get a kick back
One of the most inaccurate statements ever made was “No replacement for displacement” because turbo & super chargers make that statement completely false. 👍🏻✌🏻
The Z has a 300lb weight advantage but the power difference kinda evens things out for the mustang..this is a weird one. Only other thing is powerband and gear ratios
Z is fast and light. If it had better rubber and better out of the hole traction, it would be a far more interesting race from a standstill as well. Every time you race a Z everybody complains about the tires, put some comp twos on that sucker and then do it again.
What’s a Braniac? The Z is known for having garbage tires Bridgestone’s, I believe that’s why the comment was made. Maybe you’ll get it if you re-watch every one of Sam ‘s Videos with the Z. it’s a reoccurring theme.
It looks like by the last race, Sam learned the Mustangs characteristics more and was able to control launching and remaining in the power band better through the race. Showing the Mustangs capability.
7:21 Also for best lauch get revs high close to redlind shift straight into second gear. 3rd gear is a smoother shift than you can soft lift tap clutch shift and dump into fourth at full throttle that parts important rense and repeat for fifth and thats how ya win with a high hp rwd mustang!
I think that this video was to build interest in the lack luster Z, to get views, or both. how can the first three races be so close but the last two, the mustang slapped some gapplebees on the Z's wind shield??🤨🤔 Not to mention that the shifts from the mustang driver was HORENDOUS.!!
None of those races should be close. Sam isn't a terrible shifter, those MT82 transmissions shift like shit. The Z probably shifts far better. Ford should've taken a page out of Stellantis and put Tremec transmissions in all the v8 models many years back.
Has the guy driving the Z ever driven a stick before??? Those dogs should have been WAY closer. Guys shifts were fucking painful to watch. Not even remotely fair of a comparison
To me it looks like the Z was pulling power out. Even a little heat soak on the Q50/60 RS using stock intercoolers would pull power like crazy. Would be curious to hear from the Z driver if the first drag race felt different than the others. To me it just looked like the first drag seemed close after the 5.0 was hooked up. But after that it wasn't even close. Could be wrong, just my observation. Thanks again for a great video Sam.
Sam is very bad at manual shifting. Auto vs. Auto Mustang is much faster. Tests like Motortrend or Car and Driver show automatic Mustang run 12.0 to 12.1, and Z automatic seems to run 12.8
The horsepower is always at the crank, not the wheels. Once you bolt up the transmission, the rear axle, the differential, and all of the other components in the engine the parasitic loss happens. There are always ways to remove some of these factors by deleting components that are belt-driven or lightening up driveshafts and other drivetrain components. Of course, replacing certain stock components with aftermarket ones, and getting a re-tune in some cases, will help too.
The Z sounds underwhelming. The supposedly unintended ‘low production #s’ & the resulting dealer markups killed the Z for me. Downpipes/full exhaust is mandatory on Z. GT W/ active exhaust sounds incredible. Add perf. pack 1/2 & prem. pkg and the GT is dope af. With 10spd auto the GT is fast af too.
Fly me out and I'll teach you how to shift. Also 32 mph roll in the mustang its better to start at top of first gear instead of second. That would have made a bigger difference in the race.
Seemed to blame the Mustang when he was behind and then take credit when he was ahead. Switching drivers would have been a no brainer, but maybe didn’t want to shine the light on driver skills?
Huh? You know you can heat soak a motor on a cold day, especially a turbo motor. How do you explain it apparently getting slower from start to finish?@@SamCarLegion
@@justinp2993 the mustang was doing burnouts the first races. You can see the smoke, the third one I hooked. Not that hard to understand if you won’t make any excuses:)
The roll race results are not THAT surprising. A Z is never going to beat a high-powered Mustang from a standstill. That is not what they are for. At least with the 370Z that I had all of the power was above 2500 rpm. The new Z is a TT so it is likely to also lag at lower RPM , but once the engine spins up, then they are in the fat part of the power band. Still, Z's are supposed to be for driving, not dragging.
@@tri3pleagentSam is terrible at driving, when he showcased the z it severely underperformed too. Z is not to far off the Supra stock, very close in fact.
Great review, Sam. Thanks for the amazing content and for giving us something to look forward to on a daily basis! Wonderful cars and hard to drag race. As a former GT owner, I’d take the muscle car always. Doesn’t mean the Z is bad at all. It was actually pretty darn good. Cheers
I'm thinking the Mustang would have won in all the races with a larger margin if you were using the automatic version. You seemed to lose quite a bit of momentum during shifts, yes? And the Z was auto, not available with manual, yes?
@@gunnersnipergunner-ud7jr the autos remove driver error. And considering the top end that these coyote motors have, I doubt the races would've been any closer.
Seems to me that a twin turbo v- 6 should be making a lot more than 400 HP. I could be wrong, but seems like almost all v-6's now a days make over 300 HP naturally aspirated, being twin turboed, and only 400 HP doesn't seem right to me.
