You know there’s a chance AVATAR gets a random nomination for costumes. I remember some controversy when the original missed out - because despite the CGI, designers still have to practically make all the alien outfits and mech-suits. If it was all in camera it would probably win.
I agree that there's no shot the Oscar's snub John Williams. The composers branch loves to nominate Williams the way the acting branch loves to nominate Meryl Streep.
At least Del Toro is here to take a award away from Disney/Pixar. The academy cares so little about animation that they usually give the award to them only because their kids/grandkids have seen it, even when masterpieces like Marcel the Shell or Wolfwalkers more than deserve it. Edit: still think Pinocchio or Marcel deserves the win but damn, Puss in Boots is much better then it had any right to be.
It's unfortunate that this is the reality. Disney and Pixar have had such a stronghold on this category in no small part because of how little the Academy itself cares about animation and, honestly, film as a whole. The Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots that THR puts out are the best examples of how members in the Academy not only don't watch the films they're nominating, but also how petty and bigoted they are towards certain films and even people.
As a massive animationphile, I'm at the ponit were I'm like if they aren't going to take it seriously then drop the category. I'd rather it be ignored all together, than be patronized.
I have been thinking that maybe there is a possibility for The Batman getting an ASC nomination for Best Cinematography due to the fact that Greig Fraser has already won 2 times in the American Society of Cinematographers but who know because this year was strong in Cinematography.
You were right! The nominees are •Empire of Light •Top Gun: Maverick •The Batman •Bardo •Elvis Elvis is a wtf nomination but the others are pretty good
Decision To Leave getting paid dust is just sad. One of the best of the year in terms of cinematography, editing, and more so for directing. The year had so many great international features that are getting ignored, which just goes to show that the Oscars isnt really as global as people make it seem to be.
Just saw Babylon and agree with Justin Hurwitz' score at #1. It set the tone as the narrator. Also, my film watch group loved how the crane/dolly camera work through walls with tracking sequences and varied lighting/palette in cinematography brought out the other flashier technical components - like costumes, makeup and the impeccable production design. The good showing in the GG noms probably also will help its tech changes with the Academy.
@@pb.j.1753 There were a few examples of grotesquely funny bits regarding body fluids very early in the film that likely took out some people, especially those with families over the holiday weekend. Also, some have commented on Margot Robbie's performance becoming "too much" for three hours. Finally, three hours is a long time to sit in a theater. That said, as a film buff I loved its commitment to an under-understood insane era of silent films (chaotic parties and unpredictability on the sets), and per many of the early IMDB reviews and some of the critics, there seems to be a deep passion. Diego Calva was the heart and soul of Babylon, with Robbie (who I loved, as did the GG voters) a solid Brad Pitt and the delicious turn by Tobey Maguire in a bonkers sequence, seen though his eyes. Technical aspects across the board are stellar. They helped make the theater experience immersive. HIGHLY recommend for anyone who loves film history.
My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 30.12): *note: due to the large number of categories, I won't break down each category. Best Cinematography: 5. Ngl, original score is going to be a tough one this year. Looking at the winners throughout different awards, it’s been pretty diverse with no clear winner yet. I think the top 5 all have a relatively equal chance at this rate, and despite John Williams not winning much, he has come 2nd in almost everything despite the winners being diverse, and with how the awards work, that is something to keep in mind. Really we have to wait for the first round of major award bodies to present best score before it becomes more clear.
I LOVE Top Gun, but what they did in Avatar 2 was just on a completely superior level. I would love for Avatar to win Cinematography and Visual Effects. And Top Gun win Editing and Sound.
I wonder why they completely ignore All Quiet On the Western Front when they discuss cinematography. As if that film didn't exist. I think AQOTWF deserves a nomination for cinematography.
For Costume design I think Corsage, DWD and Amsterdam have to be considered. The first one is a period piece with amazing modern takes on the costumes (sort of Anna karenina style) and I agree that the Costume Branch is not that welcoming toward international film yet but it happens when the film deserves it (Pinocchio, Curse of the golden flower, grandmaster, I am love, la vie en rose). Don't worry darling has impressive costumes and Amsterdam, well, it's fucking Albert Wolsky!
Could you consider to make a video on why RRR is doing so good internationally? As an Indian, I'm really curious! Also to consider political subtext in that movie.
There is no political subtext. Ppl are just reading too much into it. If you think rrr is pro hindutva, then just Rajamouli’s previous films. It’s got similar themes, always inspired from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Dude just enjoys making big action movies. Nothing more.
Saw All Quiet On the Western Front and I think it deserves a cinematography nomination. I would pick if anyday instead of empire of light, which is a mobie that overall is doing pretty bad in everything. All Quiet is such a technical movie that is going to have several tech nominations.
the thing holding it back is it is an international film, there usually is a prejudice in nominating foreign films unless they are really a lock for best picture. Netflix isn't even advertising the movie, it didn't debut top 5 in my country
@@AndreFernandesMovies Empire of light does have roger deakins, one of the best cinematographers in history. Overall empire of light looks more sharp imo but the scenes where western front is in the trenches and battle is better.
In terms of cinematography, I feel like top gun is definitely more impressive and at least fresher than avatar. Avatar seems more of another CGI breakthrough with its water rather than a cinematography achievement like maverick
@@sunnnysingh3498 People aren't as critical of the story as i'd thought, i thought the story was a significant down grade and didn't make sense in a lot of parts. The first was simple but absolutely serviceable
I don't know if Carolina will be similar to lana del rey's snub. Wasn't there evidence found that someone sent academy voters fake articles stating her song actually wasn't eligible?
The Batman should get makeup if there is any justice in the world. Time to break some more stats. That colin farrell transformation is amazing + they have the whole eye look for robert pattinson + Zoe kravitz for some regular nice makeup. They have it all in there. While the whale is just brendan fraser but fatter and that's it. Even Elvis had to also do more, there is the weird tom hanks thing and the better job they do on austin butler + again many side characters. The rest of the cast of the whale has some concealer on and that's it.
There have been three exceptions to your assessment that a nominee for Best Picture and Best Visual Effects always wins Cinematography since the first Avatar, though all three were in years where there was no correlation between Cinematography and Visual Effects: Birdman, Roma and Mank...
Welp... It seems like that Top Gun can surprise everyone this year by over performing with Oscar noms. Which makes me believe that it’s this year’s Best Picture winner.
I can’t remember the last movie that did well in techs that won best picture. Gravity, Mad Max Fury Road, Ford V Ferrari, 1917, etc. all got nominated a ton for technical categories but didn’t win best picture.
@@Sharpe1502 You’re right tho, no doubt. BUT, none of those movies won Best Adapted Screenplay tho, which makes me think that if Top Gun over performs at the Academy Awards, and not only gets the adapted screenplay nom BUT wins the award, then it would allow it to take the winning prize on Oscar night
@@Sharpe1502what about Coda that only has 3 nominations and won all of them? Surprises like that could happen. I can see Top Gun winning e SAG ensemble and PGA best picture. Its a confort movie. Movies that aint bad and not that great, but make you feel good can win BP. And Top.Gun is the most gross boxoffice of 2021 in USA. That's matters for the Oscar's
If crimes of the future gets nominated for makeup, it would be the first time they nominate body horror since the very first best makeup award with an American werewolf in London
I wouldn’t underestimate Dust & Ash in Original Song. It’s J Ralph and he’s been nominated in that category 3 times. I’m not predicting it but I’m just saying.
@@VMCTALKS but not the score which is more impressive. It has won best score twice already one at LA critics awards. Plus was runner up at another one for score.
Since the shortlist for Makeup & Hair doesn't look that strong to me besides the top 4, I'd say Thor: Love and Thunder should've been on the shortlist for what they did with Christian Bale
totally agree with your guess on Elvis's victory in film editing. In cinematography, Academy has to put Bardo, because Bardo is really really good at it, All Quiet On the Western Front and The Batman are successful in cinematography, The Woman King's cinematography should not be underestimated.
I'm surprised that Mandy Walker's work in ''Elvis'' doesn't make your top 15 in Cinematography. She just won the Australian Academy Award for her camera work, and made history as the first woman to do so. (By the way, a woman has never won the Oscar for Cinematography.) In filming ''Elvis,'' Walker also had lenses re-created for each decade she shot: the '50, the '60s and the '70s.
I predict The Bad Guys will make the 5th slot because too me, this feels like this Year Klaus, Or Shaun the sheep, a movie that pundits severely underestimate becuse they don't know the animation industry as well know the film industry, nor know type of movies animators like. The Bad Guys is a beloved film in the animtion world, with its praise for its unique visual style, and much like Klaus and Shaun, the Sheep is very much an animators movie. This is the kind that will get a lot of Annie nominations, far more than i suspect Wendell & Wild will.
This is one of the wildest predictions I’ve made in awhile and I haven’t seen the film but I’m looking at shortlist, I’m looking at campaigns, and I’m looking at Supporting Actress and I put Wakanda Forever in picture. It can get a lot of nominations.
*What a miss for india if india officially submitted RRR as it's official entry it should have easily nominated. The nomination it self is a big thing because last film that nominated was in the year 2001 lagaan* *hope RRR nominate for best picture*
The Whale for hair and make up? Over Elvis?! I completely disagree. Elvis has so much to compare to. The job was to make the actors look like the real life people that they were portraying, and they did a damn amazing job at it. The Whale has nothing to compare to except for the obesity aspect. Don't forget that the designer was Catherine Martin who is already an Oscar-winner.
For me I put 2 superhero films The Batman and Black Panther Wakanda Forever And I don't think All Quiet on the Western Front will be nominated because is International. I put in the 5th spot *Nope*
Top Gun's cinematography is very car commercial throughout much of it. Ridiculous that critics are going for it and hopefully the branch snubs it. Woman King's costumes look fake and aren't even that creative - should be snubbed. Black Panther's sound is better than Elvis', really hope a surprise upset happens there.
It’s honestly disappointing seeing the Oscars potentially snubbing Taylor once again. I hate how the poor reviews of the film have blinded people from seeing the masterpiece that is “Carolina”. The song was recorded in one take using only instruments prior to the 1950s to synchronize with the setting and storyline of the film. Taylor’s original songs written for films are never commercialized, but to capture the spirit and message of a film, which speaks so deeply from her incredible talent as a songwriter and director. I hate how the Oscars always determine this category based on commercial success, the film’s performance, or whether it had an impact on popular culture. Like non of that should matter lmao, it should be about how well it serves the film from a musical aspect. What a shame she’s been an incredible songwriter for 3 decades, nominated for 4 golden globes, but never won or gotten an Oscar nom. Long Overdue!
@@gauravw6947 None of these other songs are shortlisted for the Oscars. Stop putting down RRR. It already made history. Indians should not be shorted. RRR has opened the door to Indian cinema. If only for that it deserves so much love. It's success is India's success. We have middle school American kids singing Nasty naatu in Telugu in Choirs. Come on. Which original song nomine has done that? Think long term for Indian cinema.
@@binthamadicamara2077 So? There are many films/songs/actors that have been been nominated/won and yet were better than films/songs/actors that were nominated/won… Being on the short list doesn’t automatically make it better than those other songs… The door for Oscars to Indian cinema was already opened in the 1950’s by Mother India… If you say American kids are singing the movie song, then you have proved me correct that it’s more popular among Americans than Indians…. Also, many Disney songs which have been nominated/won at the Oscars have middle school American kids as well as adults singing them in Choirs… Just because someone doesn’t like RRR or feel the movie/director/song is overrated/overhyped, doesn’t mean that they are “haters” or “putting down RRR… Many Indians enjoy the songs of Pushpa/ PS1/ other Indian movies, more than RRR and if they feel that these songs are better than RRR songs, they are entitled to have that opinion…
You're telling me Top Gun: Maverick is winning Editing, Sound and Cinematography, and there's NO chance Joseph Kosinski can snag a Best Director nomination? Doesn't make sense.
Whiplash had 6 nominations including Best Picture/Screenplay and won Editing, Sound Mixing, Supporting Actor. Damien Chazelle was nowhere to be seen for Director awards all season long.
So my hottest take for Oscar predictions is that Fabelmans will not perform as well with Oscar nominations. Last year a lot of you guys (including you, Mr. Oscar Expert) were really bullish about Belfast getting into Cinematography and Film Editing. I myself was very skeptical. I went with my gut and predicted it would miss the two and was right. I feel like Belfast and Fabelmans are almost similar in how they're going: they're perceived as BP frontrunners, win Tiff audience awards, and slowly but surely start to miss certain categories. Maybe cinematography might be hard to call but compared to the flashier and big epic scopes like All Quiet or Bardo, it could be eclipsed. In terms of Editing, if Michael Kahn and Sarah Broshar couldn't get in for West Side Story last year I don't see how they make it in for Fabelmans, which is arguably less of a showcase of their editing. So really, all I'm saying is Fabelmans can have the potential to be snubbed from certain branches. And while it is anecdotal, it's the same gut feeling I have with Fabelmans that I had with the Belfast nomination haul.
The truth, even if we deny it and doubt it, Gaga is going to win her second Oscar, her song was used to cover the entire Top Gun movie, which in the end exploded in the credits, the song served to inspire the script of the movie, now branch Meet Gaga, and you're not going to miss a live performance of Lady Gaga with this song, so I can see Top Gun, taking 4 Oscars
Naatu naatu is winning. If gaga wins than academy is racist for sure. Gaga has already won oscar let's celebrate international Film and songs. Hollywood should get out of white supremacy and narcissism about hollywood supremacy
Elvis has a rushing and slow pacing edition at the same time, great transitions. The editing branch like it. I would predict Blonde, that movie has some of the best transitions of last years, but its a Rated R movie, and it will not gonna happen.
Doctor Strange has one very noticably bad visual effect right at the last few seconds of the movie, and they always say the end of the movie is what the viewer walks out with, so I don't think it'll overcome Nope for the nomination.
“The Quiet Girl” DESERVES a nomination at the very minimum for Best International Feature. It’s a masterpiece in every way (and happy Christmas to both you guys!)
I'm surprised how much I really loved it despite it being a super predictable and played-out premise. It doesn't feel like this movie does anything that new with the story but it deserves so much respect for overcoming that obstacle and hitting the audience in the feels anyway.

If you read it as that the girl in The Quiet Girl has been sexually abused by her father, that will probably have an effect on how the movie comes across to you. I don’t believe this is a popular interpretation by any means, but that’s what I felt watching the movie. Therefore, although it’s beats were predictable enough, the suspense about just how exactly it would end was extremely intense to me. The Guardian newspaper had the film #2 and Aftersun #1. There is some consonance between the films, as accumulatively emotionally affecting dramas. Like I say, I was convinced of a dark and heavy subtext in The Quiet Girl while watching. This hasn’t been much acknowledged or discussed in relation to the film, but since I thought it was there, I was very involved in the story and didn’t find it in the least bit sentimental or cheap.

I have EO and Joyland in for international feature at the moment because: EO is pretty short and it's the quirky donkey movie with depth and the yak in the classroom (which nobody talked about last year) says hi and Joyland for like political reasons and solidarity for that filmmaker kinda like what happened with The Salesman and people who see Joyland really seem to like it as well so it's not purely for that reason.
