I own the 6.4 Hemi. It's tows my gooseneck dump trailer and my 11k 5th wheel. I'm at 34k miles in 2 years. Towing up and down the east coast. I have no desire or want for a diesel.

I own both. My opinion is towing, both seem to do great, I’m towing only 11,000, the hemi has no problem. When stopping with a heavy trailer the Cummins is so much more stable. However I bought the 6.4 hemi about 6 months ago only because $4.30 gal diesel vs $2.88 gal gas. Regardless of how I only get 12mpg in my 6.4 it’s only $71 to fill up and it drives like a hot rod around town. My Cummins only gets 14mph (it is a Dually) and cost $114 to fill up. The hemi is so much more fun to just drive daily vs the Cummins. Love them both but the question really is towing and how often. If you tow daily stay away from the 6.4 hemi, I only tow once a month so that’s why I have both. I tow the machine shops products with the Cummins Dually and the 2500 hemi is my family truck, boat, Home Depot run etc.

How can the price difference be so high for you? I don’t want to call BS on you but is it possible that you’re maybe stretching the facts a bit here? I live in Canada where we are much more heavily taxed on fuel and diesel is only 6.9 cents more per litre here in my area right now (about 26 cents per us gallon…)?? I’m not a math or an economics whiz but according to my (flawed?🤔) calculations, your stated price difference works out to around 37 cents per litre. That’s a 5.3X higher price difference. Doesn’t seem logical. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@DanielSon69 here in the US not communist Canada Diesel is between $1.20 to $2.50 more per gallon depending on what state you live in. The liberals in California decided diesel is dirty so they put more taxes on manufacturing diesel and the prices we gallon. It sucks and I hope we the people take back the country soon from these evil liberals. In the US we are taxed by the state and the federal government. “We are taxed twice it adds up”, you can call BS but you will feel really crispy when you realize everyone in the US pays average of $1.50 more per gallon for diesel over gas.

It’s pretty crazy to know that the 6.4 HD is not too far from the 6.7. I had a 6.7 in 2018 and because of diesel prices, I have switched to the 6.4. Remove the mid muffler from the 6.4 and enjoy the sound and increase in air flow. I have a cold air intake and straight pipe. The 6.4 has definitely the smack you in the face power and in my opinion, more fun to drive. Having had both, I would say that if you are consistently towing(not payload), use the 6.7. If you are driving the truck often and doing occasional towing, get the 6.4. It’s cheaper to purchase, cheaper to fill up and unless you want to spend a couple grand in deleting your truck, you will not have to buy DEF. The 6.4 has a plethora of mods that are cheaper as well.
@DanielSon69

The diesel will always burn more fuel if it’s not running at normal operating temp. Driving two ice cold engines around the block is about the worst way possible to compare fuel economy 🤦🏻‍♂️

Unfortunately the DIESEL DEF system will FAIL in due time leaving you in LIMP mode. When you call the DEALER you will have an average 1 week or more lead time because they dont have enough DIESEL mechanics. SAVE your $10,000 and get the HEMI... you can buy a lot of gas with that money and most likely never have an issue. PEACE OUT - great reviews BEN

Not in california you can get fine and criminal chargers for it since they pushing zero emission vehicles. I own a 1500 duramax 2 years already and is super reliable I save a lot on gas making a lot of mpg and never had any issues with def. I can’t speak for Cummins def though but I don’t know why I read a lot of problems with rams the truck looks beautiful and I had commercial Cummins before they super heavy duty def would break as if you were doing some heavy duty businesses like hauling containers or such. But I don’t thing for the regular folk def wouldn’t bother as much.

IMO if you tow a lot and need the Cummins pay the extra little bit and go 3500. If you are not towing a lot go 2500 6.4 gas. I see a ton of 2500 Cummins out there towing nose up and obviously overweight. For sure the Cummins engine can tow way better than the gas Hemi, but the 2500 is not enough truck for the engine.

But honestly if youre not towing heavy, you’d probably be fine with most half tons with max tow package, unless you have an especially long or tall/un-aerodynamic load you regularly tow (regardless of weight - longer wheelbase = more stability)

My biggest complaint about the 6.4 with 4.10s when towing is that it’s constantly hunting for gears. When I had the Cummins it stayed in 6 most of the time. The 6.4 with the 8 speed rarely even goes into 8th when towing unless you’re going downhill. I’m not sure if the Ford 7.3 hints for gears constantly. Just a thought.

Ram needs to do something about the payload capacities on their 3/4 trucks. 1700 pounds on a 3/4 ton diesel is ridiculous! My GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax has a payload capacity of 3000 pounds.
@travishildebrand9800
@travishildebrand9800 Год назад
They want to keep the GVWR at 10,000lbs in the 3/4 ton set up in order to comply with many states’ commercial licensing laws. The 3/4 ton category is pigeon holed to that GVWR and the diesel engines from all makes suck the payload out of the 3/4 category. Simply need to step up to 1 ton trucks to get your buck out of a diesel truck.
@TheElderOne2003
@TheElderOne2003 Год назад
I've loaded well past the 1700lb in the back of my 22 Ram 6.7L CCSB 4x4. They just derate these trucks for the weight compliance for licensing and stuff. I load pallets of seed for corn, beans, wheat, and never had a problem. Heck, we put a pallet of cement mix in the back, and it only leveled the trucks suspension a bit.
@travishildebrand9800
@travishildebrand9800 Год назад
They absolutely derate the truck’s actual abilities for the GVWR compliance, but don’t get in an accident while hauling over the sticker weight. It becomes a much more difficult legal situation for you. It also makes the actual payload limit a mystery. The rear coil springs of the 2500 aren’t going to give the same capacity as the 3500 leaf springs, so where do you draw the line? The capabilities of the Cummins engine give a bit of a misleading impression of what the truck can safely do.
@user-lz7wb7tg4g
@user-lz7wb7tg4g Год назад
Don't have to do anything, RAM has already done everything. You just don't need to wrap yourself up on the nameplates, but look at the technique! If a person does not heavily load his truck, why torture him and shake his soul out of him with a stiff spring suspension without load ??? Here is a more comfortable coil spring! Need to load? Well, take 3500, and there already with Dully, even without them! Take the same PW. A lot of people said - Hey damn attractive truck! But we do not need so many off-road capabilities, but the payload is poor. And in general we want a diesel! RAM cuts off some off-road capabilities, adds cargo capacity, retains the looks, a wide range of options (LImited or Longhorn with HEMI not currently available), and here's the REBEL! So everything is wonderful! RAM has a truck for every taste and color!
@barrigany
@barrigany Год назад
The hemi and Cummins has all the same components except for engine. Same frame, brakes, axle. That being said, the hemi has more payload because of the GVWR. Does that make sense? Just because of the GVWR formula?

Correct, the diesel weighs alot more for sure
@barrigany
@barrigany Год назад
@@malcolmn.5222 Yes sir, it does. But you think both trucks should be at 10k? All I'm saying is ram keeps the GVWR for the 2500 the same for registration/dot purposes instead of capability of the truck configuration.

There are more differences than you think. They are paired to different transmissions, but both are smooth and quiet. The cummins 2500 has hydroboost brakes and the hemi has vacuum. People complain about the mushy brake feel of the hemi version where they have to floor the pedal to get it to stop. You can google this. The cummins also has a different exhaust system, obviously, and that wouldn't be worth noting except for the fact that the hemi cat pipes have some kind of design oversight that makes them squeal a bit like a worn serpentine belt.
