Every year, the Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) works with the tribal co-managers and federal agencies to determine the salmon seasons for our marine coastal waters and interior saltwater bodies like the Puget Sound. This process is called North of Falcon.
During this process, WDFW shares a lot of data in visual form about the state of the marine environment and salmon stocks. Following along with this process can give you a jump on planning of where to fish and how to prepare for the 2023 salmon seasons in the saltwater, but also some rivers as well.
In this video I break down the highlights regarding the environment for salmon and the forecast for all five species of pacific salmon: Chinook, Coho, Pink, Sockeye and Chum.
While there are definitely some concerns longer term, 2023 is expected to be a promising season for many salmon stocks, especially Coho and Pink Salmon. Chinook also has some bright spots, mixed in with concerns like the Stillaguamish.
