This was really a good, in-depth review. Nice explanation of the trade-offs between the ball data generated by the different heads and why simply going for raw distance is quite likely not in one's best interest. Glad to see someone swinging closer to what the majority of us swing, and not carrying the ball unattainable distances. Sub'ed.

Fantastic test and explanation of what is going on with different heads. Also ever so useful to see it done at average swing speed. What I found especially helpful was the evidence that a weaker loft may not automatically produce greater peak height and a steeper descent angle. It depends on swing speed. If you were to swing the 7 iron at 90-91 mph, then you might get greater peak height and the steepest descent angle of the group. But at 80 mph you simple are not generating enough ball speed to make the ball go far enough to get the peak height high enough to produce a descent angle over 45 degrees. I realize this is happening to me. I play solid forged blades with a 34 degree 7 iron. They are lovely irons, Chicago Classics by Evans design, almost identical to the Mizuno MP-33 irons I had for many years. Good players with fast swing speeds who try them at the range love the feel and flight. But at age 82 I am now struggling not only with carry distance but also with peak height and getting the descent angle to be higher than 38 - 39 degrees. Over 40 just once in a while. I got these clubs because the pro and club maker at my range had boxes of these heads from years past, new and unhit, and had put a set together for someone else who backed out. So I got 3 iron through GW and SW with Royal Precision Rifle Lite 120 gram stiff shafts for (drum roll) just $100. Yes, $100. A bargain I could not resist. I added a LW later. As those shafts are now too heavy for me, I had him make up a second set of the same heads 3 through 9, with 87.5 gram Nippon NS Pro Zelos 8 stiff shafts. Ran me about $375. Can swing those faster but still struggle with carry, peak height and descent angle. Apologies for the detail, but it proves your point made with the TM irons. So in your fitting I would be the customer who should go with either the 770 or 790. But probably not the Stealth because as both you and AskGolfNut have demonstrated, the descent angle with those extra strong lofts is so low the ball will roll out and not stop on the green. You are 100% right, getting a good fitting is critical to finding the head and shaft combination that gets your 7 iron coming down at least at 43-44 degrees with a decent peak height and carry. Not just the longest carry. I suppose the holy grail would be if you have two irons with the same peak and descent angle, then you would pick the one that gives a consistent extra 3 or 4 yards of carry, and/or better dispersion and perhaps even feel and sound. So many thanks for this eye opening lesson.

I'm glad you took a minute to address the "consistency issue" with irons. I heard what you proposed on what a "flyer" is but you did not address or mention why I and others feel are causing flyers with these distance hollow body clubs. And that factor is, the foam insert in these clubs. You can see from a lot of the indoor studio tests done, these clubs do or can have a much higher disperssion in distance. Like to hear your thoughts on this or maybe do your own deeper dive on it and show us your results. Thanks
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
Hey Jess, thanks for the comment. Well my thoughts would be the same as I mentioned in the video in all honesty. Having fitted using these types of clubs ever since they came out I have seen thousands of shots hit with them by all different levels of golfers with all different swings. And from that data I can't think of one single shot that has stood out as a flyer and that the outcome couldn't easily be quantified or explained as something within that person's delivery or where they struck the ball. The front to back dispersion will always be far more the human than the club. I think to properly test this you would need a robot to ensure delivery and strike remained the same to test the consistency of the club. A human of pretty much any level would be too inconsistent to conclusively prove the theory, unless you hit a crazy amount of shots and really analysed the data thoroughly and took out a lot of shots. Again in my many years of fitting I personally don't believe the foam inserts would cause this issue. The one reason a lot of people would see possibly more front to back dispersion is the lower spin coupled with a strong face to path delivery would cause a longer shot than say on a blade as the spin may be retained slightly better. And on the flip side anyone can hit a terrible shot and see a large drop off, that in my opinion would not be the clubs fault. If you hit any club the same I believe you would get the same result. Again the variables in this are huge. 2mm strike or 0.5* face angle is enough to make a noticeable difference in the numbers. So without mm correct data that's delivered consistently it's literally impossible to say. But that would be my experienced opinion on the idea.

Brilliant review and have instantly subscribed, tech heaven 👍. Will be 60 this year and seriously considering the 770's and dropping to stiff shafts, the only thing I'm worried about is the spin being to low to hold greens. Playing callaway apex mb with x shafts, but Idamaged my left knee in the summer and now struggling to get distance and hight (absolute opposite to normal)
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
Thanks Karl appreciate that 👍👍 and yeah well the new 770s do spin pretty well. But one thing to consider is that land angle is more important than spin when you are talking about stopping the ball on the greens with irons, so if you can retain a similar launch but get more ball speed out of a different head then you will quite possibly increase the height of your ball flight and therefore giving you even more stopping power while increasing distance and forgiveness at the same time 💪

That was a great in depth review. I think where fitters get a bad rap is it’s so easy to get numbers into their favour. Kind of like going into an auto repair shop. You haven’t a clue, and they can take whatever they want or lead you wherever they want really. People should learn more so they can be a part of the fitting because their swing is unique, and they are the only one who really understands it to a degree. I’ve had too many bad experiences with busy shops rushing me through, putting me in the wrong category of player. You seem to be thorough and honest, and I wish you were around my area. Thanks
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios 9 месяцев назад
Hey Nelson, thanks for the comment bud. And yes I completely agree with all of your points above. It needs to be more of a team effort from player and fitter, not just the fitter telling you what you need. And I hope there aren't many places fudging the numbers anymore. But I'm sure they are out there!

Great vid, unreal detail and explanation. What would the stats on the MC look like if you had to hit a club that kept up with the stealth? You’d have to hit a 5i in the MC? What would the spin numbers and decent angle look like on that? I’d love to see a comparison vid where someone hits different clubs to the same yardage. So it might be a 7i in the MC and P770, 8i in the P790 and 9i in the stealth. Cheers

Hi, your videos are awesome! It would be interesting to hear what good figures ( Attack angle, peak hight- angle of descend...) should look like with a 7 iron. You should really continue with your YT-channel, because your videos are unique. Thanks for the content.
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
Hey Romain! Thank-you I really appreciate the feedback 👍 and yes I am trying my best to keep it going and will be bringing out content whenever I can. So a good angle of attack will vary depending on your speed. In my opinion the slower you are then the less down you want to hit. Always hitting down is best but not too much, so for slow swing speeds maybe 1 down for mid swing speed around 3 down and fast swing speed around 5 down would be nice. Again peak height will depend on speed but if you take your swing speed and add 10 feet then that would generally be a good peak height. And decent I like around 47 with 7 iron, or as close as you can get, if it's more than that then it's not a problem, but getting over 45 for slower swing speeds would be my goal.

@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
Thanks erhimc! And no not really. The forgiveness element between say the Stealth and the P770 is not as big as people think at all. In my opinion the most important part is getting the right ball fligh for how you deliver the club, and that will also make the clubs gap better too. A lot of high handicappers have slower swing speeds, so for that the last thing you want is very strong lofts like the Stealth irons. I am not a big fan of the game improvement irons nowadays. I don't think they help a lot of golfers!

That may be the best club review I've ever seen. I may have missed it, but beyond the distance dispersion, was there much difference in side to side dispersion? I'm guessing not much given your consistent face angle, but from others' reviews some clubs either seem to spray wider, or have a greater tendency to result in a draw vs fade
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
Thank-you! Really appreciate that 👍👍 and no, no draw / fade bias or dispersion bias. That's definitely more down to the player when it comes to irons. Asking as they have the right set up of course. But heads on their own have very little difference in bias

@steveh4516 Год назад
Hi, Just a quick couple of observations: I think it's great to make the club comparisons at the same 'slow' swing speed, however; the kind of players that would use / choose the Stealth are likely struggling with consistent club contact and because of this, and maybe a similar or even slower swing speed, they could never dream of hitting the 170 yd mark with any 'normal' iron in the bag, let alone a 7 iron; they would also likely find they cannot get any further or reliably hit a 6 iron and certainly not a 5 iron. So, for example, my more elderly playing colleague, for whom I recommended the use of the Stealth irons, is now absolutely made up with their performance, ease of hitting and distance. Also, in order to get to the 170yd mark with say the P7MC, you probably would need to hit a 5 iron, which, for some players, has the problems already mentioned above and would in any case lose spin and launch angle bringing it closer toward the Stealth 7 iron. I'd love to see a review of an 80 mph swing speed on a P7MC 5 iron and see the flight and distance characteristics; I'm sure they would be pretty poor even when compared to the Stealth 7 iron - I think It's important to consider the person who might use these different clubs when you are doing a low swing speed comparison and their inherent capabilities as well as pointing out the 'ideal' launch and landing numbers you'd want at a fitting. No offence, it's just my two cents worth of considerations on the reality I've seen on the course of ageing / struggling players who still think they should be able to hit the ball as far as they did 35 yrs ago becoming really disillusioned and unhappy with their game and not trying out any of the latest 'club improvement irons' that maybe produce sub optimal numbers but which could bring back a big smile 🙂to their faces when they crack even a 150 yd 7 iron onto the par 3 green for the first time in years rather than trying to use wood or even the driver off the tee for the same effect. ru-vid.comgaming/emoji/7ff574f2/emoji_u1f642.png

@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios 9 месяцев назад
I don't love a 790 and 770 combo if I'm honest mainly from a spin numbers and gapping perspective. Plus the forgiveness difference between the 790 and 770 is pretty minimal so personally I'd just stick with the 770 all the way through
@joelane2845

Great video!! Curious!! Which iron do you think is more forgiving out of the P770 vs Mizuno Pro 225? Then the winner vs P790? I wish they had revamped the P790 with the P770 instead of waiting until fall 2023 !!
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
I don't really think any of them are more forging than the other if I'm being completely honest. Obviously the 770 is a smaller head than the others so that will have a small effect on forgiveness. But they are not comparable. The 770 has more loft than the others so will therefore launch and spin more than the others. So really it's more of a question of which one would fit your delivery better, not which one is more forgiving.
@tangyboi6420
@tangyboi6420 Год назад
Nice Video! I'd love to see you test all 4 irons but try to match the lofts. Like what happens if you take the 8 iron stealth vs the 7 iron p790? I see the 8 iron stealth is 32 degrees. P770 7 iron is 33 degrees. I bet there would be some interesting numbers on launch, spin, distance, and efficiency. As someone who does spin the ball too much, seeing the difference in the two clubs when loft is nearly identical could really help the average golfer who can game but maybe has too much spin or not enough.
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
Yeah you start getting into murky waters when you start talking about loft matching on irons don't you 😂 loft set ups are very interesting nowadays. If I'm honest I'm really not a fan of the super strong lofted irons as they generally create very inconsistent gapping. As you mention the 8 is similar to the 7s in the other set, so not you have to make up that loft difference when going up into the wedges which creates big gaps. But from a performance perspective loft is like 90% of performance. So they would still be different and Stealth would spin spin less but it wouldn't be like a HUGE difference. Stealth 8 and P790 7 would probably be quite similar. The new 770 spins nicely tho so that would still spin quite a bit more id think. Really the only way to get the best complete iron set up is to get fitted to ensure the best ball flight for your delivery but also the best gapping. There are always compromises to be made but just got to get the best you can.
@tangyboi6420
@tangyboi6420 Год назад
@@epgolfstudios While i completely agree with you on that response! Showing how the stealth compares to the p790 or P7MC at the same loft is a great bit of info. You can easily bend lofts a few degrees. I'm very curious how the Stealth would perform. I could easily see a set of Stealth's from 5 iron (21 degrees) to AW (49 degrees) where you bend a few irons up or down 2 degrees to get a 4 degree gap between all clubs. The gap from 6 to 7 in that set is 4 degrees and from 8-9 is 5 degrees. It sounds kinda wild but the 5 iron stealth is pretty much a 4 iron but a half in shorter. This isn't something the normal person could do but it would be a really cool video: Stealth Irons vs P770 (matching lofts) and lets see how much performance the game improvement brings. Those numbers you showed with the Stealth at like 1.43 smash factor tells me that if you dont care about the looks, the stealth will prob out perform every category but back spin.

Interesting how testing is done with the same numbers on the bottom of the clubs rather than the distance that has to be achieved. If the pin is 170yds surely testing should be done with clubs that can achieve that distance at the 80mph swing speed. I think that may give interesting data to compare.
@epgolfstudios
@epgolfstudios Год назад
That's a very good point and idea Ken for sure. I think at the moment there are still a lot of people out there that won't fully understand the loft differences between these clubs and how much of an effect it will have on ball flight. So showing the 7 iron comparison is a great way of bringing light to those facts. But yes I agree that would certainly be a good little extra to throw in there. It just means me buying lots of 6 irons and 5 irons for testing which I don't like the thought of 😂😂
