Here’s a quick review of the 2023 Toyota GR86 after I experienced the Premium Automatic version out at The Tail of The Dragon. We don’t see any major changes for 2023 other than a new special edition, but would you buy this over a Mazda MX-5? Video here: • 2021 Mazda Miata Revie...

Hi, I've watched a few of your vids. Great stuff. These are great cars. Can you possibly do a video on reliability - pros and cons etc etc?? That would be much appreciated. Thanks.
@sunnyvalentino
@sunnyvalentino Год назад
I'll add, reviews saying this is a beginners' car because of the low HP is wrong. This car is snappy as you mention when the tires are not hot. It's been like that since they launched the first gen. It has to do with chassis geometry, and the GR86 is more playful vs the BRZ. Nothing dangerous (unlike the Supra and Mustang GT) but should be treated with respect in the rain and until the heat is in the tires. Amateurs think 200HP is baby stuff. Ask anyone who has driven the Hoinda S2000 to learn from the old guys. Respect with RWD is the name of the game.
@MeynMotorGroup
@MeynMotorGroup Год назад
Facts brother, S2k is a perfect case in point the first gen would really loose it’s rear and got people spinning out. In fact these little small wheel base cars are pretty hard to manage at the limit, the long wheel base stuff like GT cars give you so much time to correct but you really have to be on top of things when driving at the limit in the smaller sports cars. Supra like you mentioned can get pretty sketch as it is small with a very powerful turbo motor and instant torque. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us and for always supporting!

I'm looking for a car exactly like this. After my g35 coupe and my first car a 77' gt Celica hatchback in 1987 I love a coupe. Kids are basically gone and I'm almost 52. Just need something to scoot around in. I'm buying a 2023 GR86 next spring. Been looking at older Caymans. After watching this I'm sold. Like you made this vid for me. Thanks 👍

Bro, long time sub. Another stellar review. I Turod one earlier this year and came out looking for the Porsche badge. I'll go further, it's better than the Cayman - there are more options rotating the car Vs the Cayman. It feels spiritually similar to the Mustang GT and Camaro SS 1LE, but 70% the size, much more lighter and nimble feeling. Steering was direct as you say, but no road feedback. If you like 90s cars like RX7 and E36 M3, even further back AE86 and 944, this is your car. This car along with the 2023 Golf R DSG were some of the best cars I've driven in recent memory (and I have driven tons for the last 25 years). The torque vectoring diff made that a modernized luxurious Evo X.
@MeynMotorGroup
@MeynMotorGroup Год назад
Really appreciate your support over all these years! And thank you for sharing these details with us, yea this GR is pretty legit really like how they have this set up. I’m surprised you don’t like the Miata I thought that felt pretty sturdy for it’s weight but I’ve only driven the new Miata’s to be fair. Golf R was def a beast yes. I bet the car is a bullet with the DSG, I only tried the manual. But yea the way the Golf handles is so smooth and sorted, I think it’s a great daily with the DSG. I’m glad there are some great sporty options now, still waiting to check out some of the Hyundai N products to see how that stacks. I am sad to see the prices of all these cars going up, $30k is the new $20k 😞
@sunnyvalentino
@sunnyvalentino Год назад
@@MeynMotorGroup , the Miata is VERY study and well built considering its very low weight. For me, its weight is too little combined with the open top/no pillars that it just feels like if I get into a collision I wont survive (but I didnt get that feeling at all with the GR86). Now that I am older with a kid I dont feel comfortable in something like that - these days everyone is driving really tall heavy SUVs and electric cars that weigh 5000 pounds. Driving wise I dont like the Miata as much as the GR86. There's something about the big steering wheel (for its cabin), slowish rack, body roll and feeling of sitting over the rear axle (like the Supra) that I dont love. The engine is livelier in the Miata Vs the 86 as you mention. The Golf R is so good also because of its snow performance. I refuse to drive FWD anymore - where I live its wet, hilly and in the winter snowy. FWD (including GTI) have HORRID wheel hop on acceleration and off standing starts whenever its rainy. I'm not even considering the Type R, Elantra N, GTI. Sad but true about car price man. Elantra N is the only reasonable one, but Hyundai engines reliability is crap and so is their dealer service and honoring warranty.
@MeynMotorGroup
@MeynMotorGroup Год назад
Ah yes I gotcha now yea the safety & crash test worthiness of the Miata is a bit sketch I admit very tiny car no idea how it will fair. All the other Mazdas are very safe but not sure about the MX5. Crash test is something I take seriously as well. Yea it sounds like if you can get a Golf R at MSRP it can be the perfect daily for you, Manual would hold value nicely but I’m thinking DSG might be the best way to enjoy it since it’s so quick. Good looking vehicle too the Golf R.
@sunnyvalentino
@sunnyvalentino Год назад
@Exhaust Sports Auto yeah. I am waiting for you to get your hands on a GR Corolla as well. That will probably be the Goldilocks car like the Golf R. For Golf R I think I'd lean DSG just because the Germans don't really take the time on improving the manuals as its only for US market. BMW has been using the same manual for over 15 years, Porsche didn't even bother to change the manual gearing on the Cayman GTS (although the feel of Porsche manuals is good) and Golf R manual is plagued with problems around clutch plates and crank bearing failure. The Golf Rs DSG is supposed to be bulletproof and take high HP boost.

Excellent review. Ordered a BRZ in July, due for delivery in January. I heard that all of the Subaru 2023's have been spoken for and that they are waiting until January before they start taking orders for the 2024's. Toyota doesn't take orders, per se. Check online, or call, for what pops in at dealers within a reasonable drive. Again, once they hit an online listing, they don't last long.

@GlockNinja
@GlockNinja Год назад
how did that mustang drive compared to the 86 on the tail of the dragon?
@MeynMotorGroup
@MeynMotorGroup Год назад
So I didn’t drive the Mustang, my partner Matt Keegan drove it. But from the passenger seat at least there was a lot more body roll. Granted the Mustang they brought out was a regular EcoBoost. The High Performance Eco & PP2 V8 Mustangs I’ve tried have stiffer chassis with less Roll. Regardless, the performance of the Mustang is fine what I don’t like is the lack of communication, feels like I’m driving on Glass all the time and the steering has no feedback so I don’t know what the front or the rear of the car is doing. GR is the complete opposite, I know exactly what the car is doing, the steering & chassis is very tight (almost Porsche like) and I just enjoy pushing the GR a lot more because of this. Drawbacks of the GR is the lousy sounding engine and of course it won’t feel as quick as the Eco or V8 but I don’t mind the power this GR has

This GR86 Premium for $ 32k or a Elantra N for 32k? I think i would buy the Elantra because a lot more Hp and torque, 4 doors, more room and trunk inside, a modern interior, newest tech. and safety features, bigger wheels and if i want a very modern and fast shifting wet clutch DCT where all these things the 2023 GR86 not have, for the same money.
