In this video, I address the frequent "ancient dinosaur" commentary about the 5th Gen 4runner's powertrain. Is old really a bad thing? Do you need more than 5 gears? What does.it compare with? Tune in for my thoughts on this timeless, reliable machine!

Everyone wants 30 mile to the gallon and 400 hp. It better handle like a sports car. It better be able to climb a mountain. Most of all, it better be dependable and cheap. If you drive like a normal person and not a douche the 4Runner is fine on power. Extremely reliable. I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

I just bought a 24 SR5 4runner and i am 66 and retired, This vehicle in all my years in other vehicles, hands down the best of the best, no nonsense engine and trans and the feel when driving is solid. I wanted this as the last year of the 6 cylinder and solid 5 speed trans, This is a keeper my friends. I owned 3 tacos , my last being a 4 banger 2.7. another great engine . But I wanted this so bad I traded my loved 4 banger for the 4runner, Rides like a Cadillac to me going fron the 4 banger to this lol All I will leave you with is if you want the last of one if not the most reliable SUV s than do it ! No rattles no nothing, SOLID

My son just picked up 2024 Pro last night. He had a ‘21 and had to sell it due to unforeseen circumstances last year. His situation improved dramatically in recent months and with his purchase of the new Pro he is a happy man! These are the most reliable vehicles on the market today. He agrees with everything you say about this “old” platform.

I have ‘22 4Runner trail edition (essentially an SR5 in Army Green) and I’ve owned some other modern vehicles with more pep, more gears, etc etc. and I love my Runner most of all. I call it a “honest truck”. It is simple, refined, and true. Doesn’t pretend to be something is not. Everyone in my family loves it. They all like riding in it, like looking at it, and everyone argues over who am I gonna pass it down to when the time comes to move on to another vehicle. Don’t let the haters distract you from the amazing reputation these little trucks have. You got your self a great tool box on wheels

Got my 2024 4Runner Limited about a month ago. To me, it does not feel like a dinosaur, it feels solid, smooth and I love driving it. I came from a 2007 Frontier but also own a 2020 RAV 4 Hybrid. The 4Runner has most of the modern stuff I wanted. Adaptive cruise, blind spot monitor, memory power seats, backup camera, Apple Car Play. Didn't want lane keep assist although the 4Runner has a lane departure warning. Didn't want a power lift gate either. So far in about 800 miles I'm still averaging about 21 mpg combined, but I probably drive more conservative than most. For me, it's the perfect balance of old school reliability and new technology.

Don't feel you have to justify your 4runner, as I've said before, she's proven herself time and time again. I to get tired of people putting it down because of the age and lack of technology. These people really don't have a clue on what they're talking about, because if they did, then they would know exactly what the 4runner is all about. If you ever think she could do with a bit more get up and go as most of us did, try putting in the pedal commander as I did. It doesn't improve horsepower but it really wakes her up. I keep mine on the second city setting just enough to take up that lag. Good luck with her and enjoy a vehicle that is truly a dying breed.

Great video! Nice to hear someone not parrot the negativity about these ancient vehicles. Currently own a 2003 4Runner with the 4.0 V6. First year for it. (Yes the 4.0 received an update in 2010) but still the 1GR-FE. Ours has the even more ancient 4 speed automatic and it feels quite peppy and sufficient even now at 21 years old and with 289k miles on it. My in laws have a 2011 4Runner and we've driven it several times. I will say, on take off, the fifth gen feels much quicker. But for general cruising and stuff, our 4th gen feels like it's geared better overall. Granted, I haven't driven the fifth gen on the interstate to compare, but our old 4th gen, never seems at a loss for power. It happily cruises at 70-80 mph without issue, even with minor hills. I really believe the 4th and fifth gen 4Runners are the best Toyotas in general. I will say the fifth gen is much more attractive looking. My wife and I are saving up to buy a fifth gen in the next few years. It will likely be a 2010-2014 SR5 4WD. Unless I can find a great deal on a Trail Edition or a TRD Off Road. 😂 Great vehicles, and if you're in the market, and find the prices out of reach, don't over look an older 4th gen, same reliability, minus one gear and not as pretty. 😂

Great topic. I own a 4th Gen 4runner going on 9 years. Today I'm in a rental Ford escape while i get some work done on her. My impression of the "new" tech and characteristics of these modern cars. Brakes: grabby Engine: peppy but actually weak hidden behind low end jumpiness. Definitely feels more modern. Cabin: nothing special. Functional. Road manners: nice handling. Steering tight but "video game" like no feedback. Road noise: much higher than old 4runner. In fact, 4runner noise is pretty much limited to wind noise over 50mph. This thing you can hear tire, a drone. Just sounds tin like. Overall: 4runner hold it's own against new cars. I would definitely prefer the 4runner on a long trip.

The Toyota 4Runner has been my dream truck since I was a kid finally bought a 2019 TRDOR brand new and absolutely loved it. I thought I was going to keep that truck forever and never buy another vehicle. This February a drunk driver came into my lane and hit me head on at 55 mph. My dream 4Runner took the impact like a Boulder crushing my front end all the way to the fire wall. My passengers and I walked away with just bumps n bruises. The 4Runner is solid in every since of the word. I actually cried at the scene while my wife watched knowing how much I loved my truck. Insurance totaled it out and I went straight to Toyota where I had to wait 3 weeks for my brand new 2024 Solar Octane TRDORP to arrive from Japan.. hopefully this will be my last purchase.. the 2024 will be the last real 4Runner get ‘em while you can

I also have the 5th gen 4Runner, the seating is definitely much more comfortable than the taco (which I also had before). One thing to watch out for - is the timing chain cover oil leak at the front of this engine. I don’t see much content about it so it’s probably not as widespread of an issue but it does exist and a proper repair requires pulling the engine out to redo the FIPG. I have this leak and not sure what to do about it yet despite the truck being under warrantee.

I think of it like this. The current year 4runner has had 15 years of improvements. Its near perfect for what it was designed to do. Its not the fastest, it cant tow the most… but it’ll get you from point A to B for 200,000+ miles.

I'm really appreciative of your videos. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a Tundra right before the recall dropped, but I was already on the fence between risking the Tundra or downgrading (in amenities) to the "old trusty" 4Runner since I really only need the truck bed once or twice a year. I'm scared I'm really going to regret the loss of modern technology (currently in a MDX - long story...), but I love the sound of the drivetrain in your videos so I'm hoping that offsets it. I also had a 3rd gen Tacoma previously - do you notice the same slight lag those had when taking off sometimes? Looks like that is gone in your video but I can't tell for sure.

Glad to hear that regarding comfort. I had a 2020 Tacoma and unloaded it because it was just too small and the seating position was awful on any drive over 30-45 minutes. To me, it has plenty of power for what I'm gonna use it for, I do wish it got better mileage, but it doesn't.
