Welcome to Éire Rider Motorcycle Adventures my name is Ben,
In this video we will be taking a look at the 2024 BMW F800GS competitors that will surprise you. I believe these are competitors you should all know if you are looking at the F800GS.
Here is what you will see in this video:
F800GS spec
engine details
some technical details
optional packs
pricing
two competitors
verdict
I currently own a 2013 F800GS Adventure that I am thoroughly enjoying and wanted to make this video as this bike shares the name plate. I also wanted to make people aware of other options as pricing and spec come into it. It is also pricing very close to the F900GS.
Just because its a BMW doesn't make it a good bike as this video will show. Some bikes can be over priced and I suspect this is the reason why they badged the F800GS nameplate on it.
The 2008 to 2019 F800GS made what this is segment is today. I am confused as to why BMW put such a successful name on a bike that shares little with the original bike! Let me know your thoughts in the comment section.

The F800GS is a more technologically advanced engine than the "competition" you mentioned and is not intended for off road use only. The F900GS is for those looking for off road. The Honda is at the level of the small GS because it is not a premium product and does not have the equipment that can be ordered with the BMW. Yamaha does not have any electronics and that comparison has no basis. Those who want to ride off road can buy a competitor to the BMW F800GS for the price, the KTM 790 Adventure. A little crude motorcycle compared to the BMW, but much more off road oriented. BMW is not an average motorcycle and price cannot play a role in that.

Maybe you misunderstood, but he is spot on. He said it looks like an average bike but the engine is great on the BMW. The problem with BMW is they are way more expensive and you need to pay for all the extras which makes the F900GS makes more sense for the 2000 euros extra.

hi Depp. Thanks for the comment. Firstly I stated that the engine really does shine on this bike and it's a good all rounder however the rather average suspension system doesn't compare with the Honda and the Yamaha. Both bikes offer a great suspension system and technology. For example the Transalp has 6 traction control settings, and ride modes. The Yamaha tenere 700 is just as capable as the BMW even though it may not have the same electronics. Yamaha have stated they have designed it that way. In the video I made it quite clear that this comparison was based on price and specifications. You cannot overlook the fact that both competitors offer great alternatives to the new BMW F800GS. You stated that the F800GS is not intended for off road. The name GS means Terrain/street and it is designed to tackle both road and off road. It's in its DNA. Both Yamaha and Honda have made huge strides over the last 10 years to make their bikes better and more competitive. Having seen both bikes I have been very impressed in their build quality. Have you gone to see and ride these bikes? Pricing is very important here and to completely dismiss it is ridiculous. We all have budgets in mind and I wanted to show bikes that offer great value and have done exactly that even to the extent of saying if you still want the F800GS then buy the F900GS as it's a better bike. I ride BMW and have riden BMW for 12 years and it's about time people stop being complacent about manufacturers and start seeing the hard truth that there are better bikes out there. I ride a F800GS adventure. I do little off roading with it however I know it is capable should I wish too. You stated F900GS for those wanting to go off road. I disagree although I'm sure some will. Well I bought the F800GS adventure knowing full well I would use it 90% of the time on road vs off road. I just wanted the best bike and that's how the majority of people will think.

I agree, I don’t either the Honda or Yamaha as direct competitors, it not an adventure bike, the F900GS is. This is a great all road road bike especially with both packs.

I've just got this Bike and i love it, I was looking at the F900 but I prefer the slightly more road biased set up. I did test ride the Honda and Yamaha (Explore version) but for me they were too off road and also felt very 'top heavy' to me at least. Each to their own of course.

If your shorter in the leg the BMW is definitely the better choice by a country mile, it's a fun, capable, comfortable ride, a road bike you can gravel track, owners of this bike (thinking the f750gs which is the same bike bar a few extra few cc)love it. Its been around long enough to also say its as reliable as the Japanese bikes too. Personally think it's the best looking of your comparisons , Each to his own and all that.

Appreciate your balanced feedback. Before I got my F800GSA I had a F700GS and it was a good bike. I did feel however that it felt small and the riding position felt different than my older G650GS. Almost felt like you were sitting on top of the bike rather than in it. Engines however are made by Loncin these days and they supplied BMW with the engines for the F750 and the F850GS. Anyway thanks for the comment

Yamaha and Transalp are more offroad focused and have 21inch front wheels making them lazy in curves. F800GS is more road focused and has a 19inch wheel making it more fun to ride on the road and in the twisties. Tenere has horrible seat and long distance confort is bad. Transalp way better in that aspect. Should have included the Triumph Tiger 800 Sport which would be more of a same focus type of bike, mainly road usage with some mild offroad capacity.

Thanks Marc. Both the Yamaha and Honda I believe are the right competitors for this bike as they are both all-rounders something that the F800GS is. These are the logical choices in both their stables. I did say in the video that this was a price and specifications comparison in this video and do believe these bikes offer more value than the BMW. I have the F800GS adventure with the 21" wheel and I've had the F700GS previously and although it maybe better the difference in my opinion is slight. Not enough for me to warrant not going for a higher spec bike or the F900GS. I also had to be mindful of the length of this video hence why it's two competitors. The list could go on with other bikes.

@@EireRider.motorcycle.adventure sorry but the specs say they are not competitors, as do most of the comments…
@EireRider.motorcycle.adventure
@@svenlem lol of course they will. The same thing could be said of Kia and Hyundai nobody saw that coming but now there market leaders for technology and affordable motoring as well as strong market growth. Whether BMW acknowledges it or not but these are competitors they need to keep an eye on. You have direct competitors and indirect competitors with any brand. Honda and Yamaha are indirect competitors that offer good value.
@cetdac3

Hmm, i wonder if you missed the point...we dont all want 21 inch front wheel especially if we are not off roading. If we wanted a 21 inch wheel then the 900 would be the choice. Plus its lower for us mere mortals, and you can get it lowered even more. The honda is ok but has a 21 inch fron wheel so find the steering in road too ponderous. Bmw generally are more expensive but thats because they dont tarnish as easily...my friend is a honda mechanic and bought the gs850 as he was so impressed with the finish on my old beemers. (Dont know about newer ones to be fair..but he didnt wash his for 5 months with no tarnishing at all. I rode 40 years with my bikes as main transport all year round and after 300k miles on too many bikes to remember i can say bmw bikes were the toughest and worth the little extra paid.

@@cetdac3 the video was made creating awareness of other great value rivals. Sure they not be direct rivals but rivals none the same that are worthy of being mentioned. Have you ridden a bike with a 21" inch wheel? I've had the G650GS, the F700GS and now the F800GSA. To be honest I noticed very little difference between a 21" front wheel and a 19". I've merely highlighted the fact that there are other great bikes out there.. it's a matter of perspective and making people aware. Thanks for the comment.

good vdo but still too heavy, just as the 750gs had. I need to get down to 200kg like the tiger 850 sport, xsr900, Transalp is great but don't want tube tires. Thailnd quit bringing in the 850 sport that would have been great, but less options, that i must live without.
