The Nikon Zf is a great idea. Canon and Sony don't do retro, and Fujifilm doesn't do FF. Nikon has that niche all to their own.

Hope Nikon does a Leica-ish retro vibe but more style. Keep the apsc cheaper build and then you can graduate to the ff high end . Put out the old school build maybe Voigtlander or old Nikkor non ai quality and style .

OM-1 presents a real Choice for photographers requiring smaller lenses with superior colours. That Olympus split the company to invest in pharmaceuticals for higher profits was disappointing. One wonders which company will follow that example if the market takes a dive? Fujifilm as my guess

The Nikon Z6iii coming out in 2024 will be hugely popular with much better AF tracking (like Z8, ZF) and speed, and a great hybrid photo and video camera at a great price, loads of improved features, more fps, maybe 20 to 30fps, 6K down-sampled to 4K with up to 120frame rate in video and more affordable than the Z8 for a large majority of photographers who like Nikon or new people coming to Nikon. Any of the issues of past Nikon's will be addressed and resolved in the Z6iii. Nikon will keep putting out new lenses.

As someone who looked at Nikon in 2020 and passed, I would say that they need more third party lenses and not first party variants. There's just a ton of cool options from Sigma and Tamron these days. For example, if Nikon had Tamron's 28-200mm in 2020 for travel I might be on Z mount.

@HappyHubris

@@lnewbyliveca The Tamron is sharper and F2.8-5.6.vs F4-F6.3. Way more light and subject separation. Also priced more competitively. Basically breaks the mold on super zooms to reduce some of the biggest drawbacks of the lens class.

Small MFT bodies with an updated line of lenses is what I want. I use MFT for by B camera, but most often the shots from my $2,000 MFT setup steal the show with better images than the shots from my $5,000 full frame main camera. When it comes to features, design, and usability I prefer Panasonic over my Sony and Canon systems. As technology shrinks, MFT is in the best position to benefit from that shrinking technology.

My prediction for 2024 is, a certain group of photography enthusiasts, trying to justify the high cost of a flagship camera phone, will go back to using the mirroless or DSLR they probably already have for better quality, tactile buttons, more versatility and just buy a regular phone for much less and only use it for photography if they've been caught without thier 'proper' camera. I'm a bit late to the party, but I've discovered the sweet spot between lugging around a hefty DSLR and succumbing to a flagship phone at high cost. That is, micro four thirds! I would personally love to see a big resurrection in this segment.

Olympus needs another lens in the lineup; 12-75mm f/2.8 with IS, which would be a 24-150mm equivalent. They've got a 12-100mm F/4, i'm sure they can shrink that down and bring out something with an extra stop with a 'decent' all purpose lens. Something like this would blow APS-C right out of the water and render it useless; more or less the same noise levels at a much smaller size and better bokeh (would finally be put to rest). DO IT OLYMPUS.

In 35 minutes (minus the ads) of gear, gear,gear, you very briefly touched on the biggest deficit of these companies: software. To start, the menu systems on most cameras are a mess and need many more customization options. Beyond that, my camera should be able to connect to GPS and automatically geotag my photos built-in. A cell connection would be nice but at a minimum they need to develop more reliable phone apps. The custom shutter sound idea would be terrible considering how people would use it.

i'm a diehard crop sensor enjoyer (currently on Nikon's APS-C). The benefits of full-frame just don't entice me. Don't shoot low light, tend to shoot f/5-f/16. MFT has been enticing me more and more because of those compact lenses. I'd love to see the ecosystem grow
@ElMundoDuro
@ElMundoDuro 8 месяцев назад
MFT has some old lenses because it is the original mirror-less system. But there are also some newer lenses that are amazing. Unfortunately there is not currently a new small MFT body. I believe that will be addressed soon. But some of these lenses are crazy small, like the Laowa 7.5mm F2 lens. A 15mm full frame equivalent lens for full frame is so much larger. The Laowa lens is so small, I am afraid I am going to lose it sometimes.
@tubularificationed
@tubularificationed 8 месяцев назад
@@ElMundoDuro this is in a way the problem for MFT. "crazy small" doesn't bear any benefit, but from a certain smallness level only rather disadvantages. That's probably also the reason why the 1" sensor systems died (Nikon 1, Pentax Q). They and their lenses were "crazy small", At the same time, full frame became very compact, especially also due to the lens compactness trend there going on since a few years. If something like that got small enough, then it is just small enough. By now, MFT will get squeezed to death between ever-better-smartphones, and APS-C / fullframe. Olympus knew all that as business insiders, of course, that's why they dumped their OM system to some financial investment business, which has zero industry experience.
@ElMundoDuro
@ElMundoDuro 8 месяцев назад
@tubularificationed those smaller sensors came out over a decade ago when sensor technology wasn't as good. MFT sensors today are way ahead of those sensors from over a decade ago. I shoot full frame, APS-C, and MFT. I prefer my Panasonic MFT to the much more expensive Sony and Canon setups. "Crazy small" is a benefit when looking for an EDC camera, a hiking camera, and portable telephoto setup. MFT also excels at landscape photography with its wider depth of field. I get 2 stops more light over a full frame camera with the same depth of field. From what I have seen, that negates the higher iso capabilities of many full frame cameras. As tech shrinks, MFT is in a good position. The "negatives" of MFT being small are now mostly fringe cases. I use MFT for astrophotography, and it does just fine. I use it for portraits, and people can't tell the difference between it and the full frame shots. Sometimes I debate which is actually the A camera and which is the B camera when people prefer the MFT shots to the much more expensive full frame camera and lens.
@tubularificationed
@tubularificationed 8 месяцев назад
The issue is probably, that a MFT landscape kit or even an EDC kit is not "pocketable". Once you need some sort of bag or pouch anyway, then small size or weight differences don't matter anyway. Today, with every system (except 33x44mm "medium" format), one can compile something very compact and lightweight. For full-frame for example, a Sony A7C plus one of these small slow primes. The term "pocketable" is the most abused marketing lie in the industry anyway. The only pocketable photography devices are smartphones. Maybe also something like the Ricoh GR, as the absolute upper limit. But everything departing from that, that is every system camera kit, needs some kind of carrying aid anyway. Not even the Nikon 1 nor Pentax Q (as the smallest exchangeable-lens systems around) were pocketable, which probably eventually 'helped' to kill the 1" sensor size idea.
@ElMundoDuro
@ElMundoDuro 8 месяцев назад
@tubularificationed With MFT, I don't need to use a small, slow prime for EDC. I can use a 24-70 equivalent F2.8 zoom, which weighs less than half as much as the full frame equivalent. I can have a whole bag full of every lens I need, and it is still compact. I can even throw in a 90 - 400mm equivalent lens, and it isn't a problem. The ability to have a full camera system in a small bag is amazing. I can't do that with my full frame, Sony, even when I have some of the lightest and most compact lenses available for Sony E Mount.

It would be great to have built in HDR, customizable filters, wireless screen recording, customizable overlays, various compression modes for videos and photos, voice control menus, anti-theft technology, encrypted lens and mic registration through the camera with sharing permissions, connect to printer wirelessly, reversible handling for vloggers, alternative control using a wireless controller, streaming live video directly from, camera. Multi-camera sync feature for settings and master control, and much more. Come on manufacturers, make some useful tech. Increasing your megapixels and shutter speeds are starting to have diminishing returns. There are more features that can be added rather than just improving image specs.

OM System pushes their lineup as a wildlife option and more power to them if that works. But I just like the OM-1 for the same reason I liked previous OM-Ds under Olympus: full-featured, compact, rugged, general purpose camera. Other manufacturers offer some of that but I am willing to trade some AF and IQ performance for the extra rugged/compactness. One sad aspect that is an industry wide phenomenon is the disappearance of tiny mirrorless cameras. I loved the GM1/GM5 (Panasonic Lumix) and I still use them. I would most definitely welcome a 2024 version. Obviously, these cameras are tiny because they sacrifice some key features (weather-sealing, IBIS, battery life) but as long as I get PDAF, 25MP and subject detection, things that don't take any physical space, I'm good. I look forward to the Z6III/Z7III. I don't care about the ZF. Tony is wrong about Canon, they do have 24mm and 35mm, they are just not "Pro level". But those non-Pro primes are great since they are cheap and are pseudo macro lenses. 2 lenses in 1!

Here's my idea for less expensive cameras: Instead of trying to cram every photo and video feature into the same camera, just make a capable camera that does what camera are supposed to do - take photographs. I have an AR7IV and have never used the video function at all, for anything. That's how little I care about video. If I could have paid less for the same camera, sans video, I would have. People who want video could by a video-only camera (they can always lift frames out of their video if they want stills). This probably doesn't really impact the manufacturing costs, as most of the difference is probably in the software that runs the camera. But it certainly figures in the retail price, as more bells and whistles (even if only effectuated via software) increases the price of a camera. Maybe a camera sold as photo- or video-only, and the ability to unlock features or download software modules to enable at least some of the opposite feature set.

Canon will probably do a R7 ii at some point- which I may be interested in- and then I think they will add more high end video orientated glass as well as lower cost primes mainly. I for one am not ever planning on buying a sigma or tamron high level lens : just get the Canon. And the low end lenses I have are quirky things to have fun with. I love my TTArtisan 35mm f0.95 for instance. Canon will continue to lead the sales in 2024 and I am a happy customer because they seem to not be afraid to let tech like the AF we see in the R1 and R5ii come down into the cheaper bodies also. I shoot birds and wildlife so I want all the AF and fps I can get with good IQ. Video is not my thing but I am glad they cover that, although if I was really so serious about that I would rather get a R5C or C400. Canon has all the bases covered. I don’t know if they will do a retro. Maybe. I won’t be interested in that. Cool looks, poor ergonomics for modern photography methods.

My dream feature: ND filters on compact cameras - like Sony did on RX100 iii way back in 2014. And I'm still praying for a really hi-res AMOLED screen to be on Mirrorless cameras. That way we probably won't need a view finder, thus making the cameras small enough to be practically pocketable.

First, the 20 min buyer's guide video was great. [Start nice, then...] The G9II has 11% more resolution than the OM-1. Only you, Tony and the Professional Pixel Peepers (TM) will notice that difference. The rest of the world will either like or dislike the overall image. Yes, I'm glad Tony was wrong about m43, I bought a new Panasonic m43 camera and four Olympus lenses in 2023. Open gate would cover the vertical need. And Nikon does need to get a 35mm f/1.2 out. We also don't need 30 fps. Only Tony needs that. The rest of us can take pictures of dogs and athletes at 10fps and lower. The Fuji Unskilled Developer mode will have a few frames look like they were stuck together on the spool. I have examples for them... YES to the custom shutter sounds! Chelsea, your unicorn is on the way...

9:45, let's talk about Nikon. I'll tell you what Nikon are going to do, they are going to do what they've been doing since the 1950's, meaning that they will always top the list of best ever cameras ever made. Starting with the Nikon F, F2, F3, F4, F5,, the F100, the D3s and D3x, the D700, the D4s, the D850, the Z9, all cameras that have wiped all others off the map. One thing Nikon always does best is to produce the most award winning kit in the history of photography - can anyone challenge this?

Ordinary filmmaker put out a video showing 4 canon primes. 35, 24, and 20 f1.4 IS. And then a 14 f/1.8. Would be an amazing lens for astrophotography. Sigma made one so it’s not an impossible lens.

@@ReubenClarke Well the ZV lineup is video-centric. Whereas the RX100VII and RX10IV (and the ancient RX-1R) are more orientated towards photos with EVFs and the like. Though you could argue that the RX10 series has he potential to be a banger of a hybrid camera with a few updates (think a do-it-all camera that you can use for your kids' sports team).

If we're talking ideas, it sounds like someone should come out with a camera that looks like a Kodak Brownie and shoots either to a large, low-res sensor or film or both at the same time. Thanks for posting. Steve Jobs/Apple spent years, after killing Newton, saying the company was in no way interested in resuscitating a tablet. Gee, out of nowhere here comes the iPad. I would not discount a camera changing their OS to something like Android. Them showing no interest in the public arena could be one great bluff. Speculation of course.

The only thing we will will likely see rom Nikon in 2024 is the Z9 Mark II perhaps towards the end, and the Z6 III (and possibly Z7 III, neither of which I'm expecting to be all that big -- compared to the Zf and Z8 at least), in Q1 or Q2 perhaps. But that's about it... oh and maybe the 35 1.2. However, if we take out camera releases from speculation ,it's possible that 2024 is a year that Nikon regains its focus on producing more lenses,e ven ones that maybe aren't on the roadmap, and filling in gaps, issuing updates for cameras, like the Z8 (hopefully to add some features, as a firmware update was rumored for early 2024 for the Z8). My predictions for Nikon atl east: Z6 III (24MP, Expeed 7 -- similar to the Zf in performance), Z7 III (Expeed 7, similar Zf performance, 60MP sensor), Z8 firmware updates, Nikon 35mm 1.2 lens release, and maybe a few more consumer telephoto zooms (like a 70-300 or 50-300mm with VR). I'm also going to predict in December 2024, at least a Z9 Mark II will be announced (or a development announcement before then with potential release/pre-order for the end of 2024). But I would say the R1, R3 Mark II (if that's a real thing) and the R5 Mark II (also, if it's for real) would be bigger releases than the gen 3 Nikons.
