“Pretty pricey for a Ford” in your summary indeed. Here in NZ, Ford have dropped their price $NZ25K to try and move inventory. Even with that reduction the 3 models (RWD, AWD and GT) are still $NZ10K more expensive than the equivalent variants of the Tesla Model Y. And they are competing with Kia and Hyundai as well. The vehicle is definitely “Built for Americans”, so is spacious and comfortable inside and certainly feels more solid than the equivalent Tesla, although the door closing sound was disappointing considering it has a window frame. That even the higher models don’t have a HUD and ventilated seats shows it is being left behind. With the imminent arrival of yet another rival, in the form of the BYD Sealion 07, you are going to have to really like the styling to pay the extra for the Mach-E.
Good Summary. I have a feeling they will have to cut their prices in Australia for many reasons as you have mentioned especially given the recent Tesla price drops. Competition is good for us consumers 👏
With the recent price drop, I made the ‘mistake’ of test driving the Select LFP battery version - which BTW must be the longest range 470k WLTP LFP on the market. Personally, having owned both NMC & LFP EVs over the years, I would never go back to NMC & and still constantly amazed just how the majority of new, expensive EVs still go with this tech. In any case, was so impressed with the Select, was far, far better than expected: steering, suspension, fit & finish etc etc. The only downside I found was the very, very busy infotainment unit which had bizillion of preferences beyond belief. Still, I also read this for many as ‘set & forget’. Fantastic car & probably the best EV I have yet driven (and have now tried quite a few of the obvious incl. the MY which I didn’t like much). Shopping for a deal now.
Agreed the Mach E is actually a very well designed car which has not been well promoted unfortunately! Hopefully you can get a good deal with your purchase 🙏
FWIW, at the time of writing (June 24) & after recent price drops on the Mach-e, MY and other EV brands: there is now slightly less than $10 difference between the MY RWD & the Mach-e Select (but in the case of Ford there is a little leeway in negotiating with the dealer). I’ve driven both cars as well as other EVs & I would say there is every bit of value & difference to be found in that $10k, Is a far better, more well equipped and enjoyable car than the MY which I found to be very average ‘as a car’, more like an iPad on Wheels & those wheels, suspension, fit & finish etc weren’t all that impressive. And no, I don’t want the gigantic boot - driving around town all day with one passenger at most; rear suspension noisy, cheap seats, so minimalist we’re meant to pay a fortune for many obvious accessories etc etc. The Mach-e on the only hand is very complete, comfortable & enjoyable in the cabin and on the road. Loving the driver’s memory on the door and that the seat retracts when you get out; the infotainment screen, heads-up console, buttons around the cabin etc. The car also seriously grows on you as new little things become more obvious. Like L gear mode for example which provides various levels of regen without the 1Pedal mode; the giant Frunk with water draining holes … it goes on, there’s quite a lot of very thoughtful things here.
A little too pricey, in a very competitive market. Mach-E GT AWD $116k versus Model Y Performance $93k or $89k for inventory stock. Not sure who's buying it apart from Ford enthusiasts or hire car companies.
Dog mode / camp mode? I'm ok with price....sort of. The prices Volvo / Polestar charge for Chinese cars is a bit rich. I've never considered Volvo a prestige brand but they've long had their prices set as such.
@@LudicrousFeed No, not the Volvo I found. Feels like outdated tech, still sitting on an ICE platform (even the ZSEV doesn’t have a giant transmission tunnel in the rear); the range and efficiency are poor and overall is vastly overpriced, what, $92k for a twin XC40? Please. $88k is about the minimum for any Vovle EV except for the EX30 and that one I found very underdone and very buggy - consequently Volvo have already revised some of that in the forthcoming MY25.
How’s the acceleration? Is there a noticeable lag before the power kicks in? My model 3 has no lag at all. Also, is it possible to switch off all these artificial/generated noises when in untame mode?
Most cars I have reviewed apart from Tesla have a discernible lag when it comes to the acceleration - some more than others. Yes you can switch off the artificial sounds in all drive modes
I just test drove a Select, no, performance was excellent & I could see myself driving this mostly in Whisper (Eco) mode. the noises can be switched off permanently (Tho’ as was pointed put to me, the noises do actually provide some accurate feedback as to what the car’s doing /performing in any mode). One pedal driving is excellent, though some have criticisms here about ‘all or nothing’. Turns out that L mode4 on the shifter can be used for regen when not in in 1pedal & the amount of regen varies depending on drive mode. Nice, works well.
So glad you found it a competent EV Tom, lets hope Ford can navigate all that history of wonderful engineering, production and design knowledge to an EV future. It’s unfortunate that whilst they charge a lot of money for this car they still can’t make a profit so you have to wonder as to their sustainability as a business 🤔
Looks interesting. Wonder if it'd appeal to the previous high-spec Falcon owners who want to get the latest from Ford, have an EV and not look much like having an EV. :)
I think Ford have done very well with this car, just a shame it's a bit expensive compared to it's competitors. But it's great to see competition out there. Diehard Mustang fans may not be buying this car, as they still want the traditional V8 engine but for those who like the look of the modern Mustang and also want a full EV might go for it. The tech is definitely up there which is awesome to see. Great video again Tom!
Thanks! Great summary and as I said toward the end of the video, it’s a a curious case of who will actually end up buying this car given as you rightly said, people generally buy Mustangs for the noise, supposed power and everything else that goes with it 😁
No Ford typography externally, I had not realised that. I have a lot of time for this vehicle and I agree on its philosophy, but I would never buy as it’s too expensive for me. I don’t think it’s a sub for a Mustang though. It’s trying to forge a new market in the EV sphere with homage to its racing/GT history. Sort of, IMO. Thanks for the walk through.
Really thorough and interesting review. It’s a much better car than I thought it would be. 5 year warranty better than the Germans I believe. I dont think the mustang logo means anything here, so dont think thats a draw card. Looking at the GT, I am happy with my GV60. All 3 models seem about 10K too dear, esp in a country that doesn’t have a huge loyalty to Ford. Should sell well in america,
Yesterday finally I saw a Mustang Mach E in one street at Homebush. It looked better in person than in pictures. But I have to said: Ford is making a mistake not bringing the cheapest variant like they did in NZ. Hope one day they (Ford) will get serious and compete with Tesla.
You should have asked the officers if they wanted to have a sit in it and check it out, maybe a short 'test' drive all at legal speeds of course. ;) Suspect some owners have or will just park perpendicular to the charger to get close enough to charge on a V2/3 supercharger. I think your right either 15A or 20A or even 16A as the case may be. Unlike the F150's that have been grey-imported the Mach-e is official Ford so has OTA and updates. I believe the Ford system is quite good for trip planning. I do like the Mach-e the door handles is what I didn't like and put me off but the rest of the car is fantastic and unlike those that think it's not a Mustang and refuse to believe it I do believe it is a Mustang('Stang) and like it and it's looks. It is a bit pricey is all but then look we have a $100k+ Kia in our midst so a $95k Mustang maybe this is the new norm, let's hope not as we need affordability to be honest with EV's.
Yes agreed, hopefully after seeing this review, some people will be able to shake off their bias for a brief moment to grudgingly accept that Ford have put a lot of effort into this car 😉 - With regards to the converted RHD Lightning F-150s ... I'll have to double check with the importer AusEV to see whether OTA updates will be available 🤔
You are kind of very late to the conversion. MACH-E has established itself in its own name. No one calls it a MUSTANG anymore other than FORD who could have easily dropped the concept because MACH-E is now recognised and spoken without any reference to MUSTANG. FORD needs to comprehend that MACH-E has made it in terms of self-identification and they should be proud of that.
Excellent Appraisal of this vehicle which has some amazing inclusions . I would hope Ford include a simple sliding moon roof cover in the next model as this is the only criticism I have of a vehicle which in my opinion is much better than Tesla . Great work !
Thank you! Agreed that the glass roof would cause the cabin to be warm if there isn't adequate UV/IR protection. Surely there's an aftermarket sunshade available out there!
Yes there’s the option for that. I’d been driving it in Active for the entire loan period and still only achieved 18kWh/100km. I only drove it on Untamed for the purposes of this video
@@LudicrousFeed That efficiency issue you are having is the overlarge 91kWh NMC battery I am convinced it is a rock for the MACH-E. 72kWh LFP is the better choice not just as an entry but for all use cases or at least 90%+ of use cases.
@@LudicrousFeed I reckon. Be a great highway cruiser and looks the goods for sure. I’d have to test it out for camping though! The grey nomads in the caravan parks would be very impressed to see one of these pull up at a powered site with a swag in the back. Maybe even more impressed than by my weird, sporty Volvo.
Still, has clearly been improved constantly in my view, via OTA updates, the Ford Pass app. There’s a new 2024 model coming (2025 in AU) which has other interesting hardware upgrades as well incl. a new motor.
Ford took taxpayer money for years and then packed up. I was loyal to the brand but the cars were terrible. They still are. I was talking to a ranger owner who was on his 3rd 10 speed gearbox in 100,000km…..ford is a four letter abbreviation of handgrenade
