All three (GWM Ora, MG4 and BYD Dolphin) are selling well in New Zealand now. Each have their pros and cons, but right now the Ora standard range is the cheapest. All get the NZ$7050 rebate that might disappear at the end of 2024. One of my staff members just bought a demo GWM Ora SR for NZ$35K with just 1000km on the odometer. My 85 year old mother paid NZ$40K for her new MG4 standard range after claiming the rebate. For comparison, to buy a Toyota Corolla hybrid with a similar level of specification will cost $43K. The MG4 was the top selling EV for October.

Very interesting how the pricing varies between different markets even close neighbours like AU/NZ. Given how sensitive pricing is at this end of the market, it could definitely easily sway a potential customer one way or another

After test driving all 3 (MG4,DOLPHIN and ORA) my partner decided on the Ora, she found the ride the most comfortable (mg-harsh,dolphin-jiggly) also felt the overall visibility was better (felt the rear view of mg was compromised). Charging will mainly be done at home so charge speed was not a consideration. She chose the ultra as the extra inclusions made the bigger battery seem better value. (1st EV so she fears range anxiety) I was grateful of her choice, I’m a big guy and found there was more room in the Ora versus the others. I am hoping that the app and voice command features will be rolled out with the android connectivity in February.

My daughter got the Ora, I also drive it and I’m a big guy. Found it more spacious than the MG4. Both in the front and back row. Boot space is not great, but was something we could live with given the purpose of this car.

Agree 100%, Def buy the standard range. It’s too small for longer range use.

Seems this is going to have to grow on people over time. The nearest GWM dealer has at least 6 ORAs on its lot, and I don’t remember seeing one on the road. On the other hand, I’ve now lost count of the number of MG4s I’ve seen. I concur that the SR is the better buy.

SR is good value, agreed. I'm disappointed not having mobile app access in Australia. Believe it is available in overseas markets. Important for me living in cold Canberra as I precondition my Model Y daily in winter. Won't be able to do that with an Ora.

@@LudicrousFeed I've been attentively watching this space as I'm looking to replace our other car (Mazda 3) with an EV eventually. Ora is my top pick but now on par with the MG4 due to the app issue.
@lspeegs

No app, doesn’t remember drive mode, have to turn OPD on each time. Are the pain points of the car. FWD maybe another but if just driving normally doesn’t worry you much. It has enough power to spin the wheels if you feel like flooring it.

Australian software version seems ancient and lacking half the features that EU Ora's get. Frustrating. Android Auto coming soon though apparently.

Wow the base model is almost the cost of a Tesla M3 battery pack replacement
@lspeegs
@lspeegs 7 месяцев назад
Inexpensive EV. Along with MG4 and Dolphin. I think all 3 are good in their own ways. MG4 is definitely nice to drive, but is not so good everywhere else. Dolphin is underpowered in base spec. So this is like a middle ground. Not the best to drive, but well appointed inside in that price range. Has its issues, but most you can live with and could be resolved with software if GWM ever releases new software.

Excellent and comprehensive review. As one of a group of three cars compared this one has many positives, but also negatives worth considering. The tyres do seem inadequate for the front wheel power output. The interior looks good, the exterior is vaguely reminiscent of 50’s styled British cars, an acquired taste I feel. Not much use in a regional setting, okay for urban use and supermarket buy ups. Might be a good second car in some situations. Seems both the BYD Dolphin and the Ora are compromised by inadequate tyres. I agree, for urban use the short range version is the pick. MG4’s different versions offer potentially more variety and open road usability, but at an increasing cost as you go up the range. For me, if I was buying, I’d have to toss a coin between basic versions of the Ora and MG4 to decide, but I’ll happily stick with my Model 3 LR in my regional City setting.
@LudicrousFeed

Good summary. The tyres are not enough for the torque the power produces and would easily spin even in the dry

if you can only charge to 80% on the NMC, 420 x 0.8 = 336.... that's only 26km more the standard range anyway.... there's no point in buying the extended range at all.... !! now only Dolphin left to test to complete the chinese trio
