In this video, we take an in-depth look at GWM’s latest SUV, the Tank 300 Hybrid Electric Vehicle in the Ultra Luxury guise.
The GWM Tank 300 is the company’s ladder-frame-built SUV and the first to be sold under the Tank nameplate by GWM in South Africa. It is aimed at the Toyota Fortuner, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the Ford Everest. In spite of it being built to compete within the bakkie-based SUV segment, its striking looks and tough build make it look like a competitor of the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota Land Cruiser. The Tank 300 is a noteworthy addition as it is the first SUV in the segment to offer a hybrid drivetrain and given the current boardroom buzz around the need for SUV’s to be more eco-friendly, this is actually a huge deal.
The Tank 300’s boxy build introduces an unmatched level of toughness in the segment. The exterior design mimics that of the Land Cruiser 76 and the Jeep Wrangler. Its simplistic nature is further enhanced by the round headlamps, flared wheel arches and a blacked-out bumper and body kit. At the rear, you get a spare tyre that is mounted on the side-hinged barn door, this is a design factor that typically implies practicality and capability in an SUV.
The Tank 300 comes in a choice of three derivatives, all of which make use of a 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine. This four-cylinder unit has a power output of 162kW and a torque figure of 387Nm across the range. However, as we have already established, the range-topping Tank 300 features a hybrid powertrain, which when combined with the petrol engine boosts the power output to 255kW and the torque to 648Nm. This HEV derivative costs R851 950 and Super Luxury derivative has a base price of R725 000. Power across the Tank 300 range is delivered to all four wheels permanently via an 8-speed automatic transmission in non-hybrid models and a 9-speed hydraulic automatic transmission is used in Hybrid Electric Vehicle.
