Love your videos Nikki! Love the Q&A opportunity also! I’m surprised to see you tapping so high, is that normal? Does a tree ever get “tapped out” to the point you can’t tap it anymore? Does your maple farm have a store that you can actually visit or do you plan one in the future? Wishing you, your family and business a successful maple season!

We don‘t dare tap in Wisconsin at this time😮. I tapped in late February once and the first week of March did not get above freezing and the pores sealed shut, nothing ran after it warmed up. I had to redo every tap just removing enough material to open the pores again and then they produced again. Double the work. This was with the bucket system. It could be different with pipeline. Great video! Gets me in the maple mood!👍

Question for you. Has Boxler Maple ever had a season with zero or very little syrup production? If so was it weather dependent, equipment, or manpower issues? My neighbor sugars here in VT with sap collected locally from our trees and other neighbors. However last year he had to pause to be a caregiver. Plans are for the steam to be rising this year.

Great video as always. Lets hope for a great season ..We have roughly 25k trees to tap. We did 5k in 4 days this week. It's a long process. Then when the the sap flows and the vacuum comes up we find all the tree rat damage. Lol It's allot of work but we enjoy it..

You definitely have to be able to troubleshoot your electrical and other issue yourself. There s no time to call and wait for service people to show up in the thick of the harvest. That’s where farmers are at their best

Hi Nikki, thanks for taking us along with your tapping, I guess I missed in an earlier video that you changed the drop lines this year. I remember you carrying a bundle around on your back installing them in years past. I didn’t realize that the sap would start to run right after a freeze. May you can explain how that all works, why does it take a freeze and thawing to get the sap to run. Where is the sap before the freeze. Basically how does the tree produce the sap? Ken

I understand the business aspect (concept) of your maple farm, but I think that most, if not all producer's origins are from traditional sugaring off passed down through generations. Directly or indirectly. I'm a back yard producer (17 years active, on hiatus for 4 ) with no aspirations of becoming commercial but I like to learn and understand the functions of a large operation like yours. The modernization of the industry is fascinating. Thanks to your content I am familiar with some of the mechanics of it and will continue to watch because sugaring is in my blood. Subscibed, from Verona NY.

Does maple syrup express terroir like wine? Can you distinguish by taste between New York, Vermont, and Quebec syrup?
@kbittorf335
@kbittorf335 5 месяцев назад
I don‘t think so. It has more to do with how it is refined as well as the quality of the sap I believe. Early season sap from my experiences produces a very light colored, delicate syrup. As the season goes on the sugar content decreases and darker, sometimes used motor oil like syrup is produced. The sap quality degrades as temperatures become warmer and it is under fire for a longer period of time. Although with their steam evaporator now I am sure the quality across the board has improved.

I had brought this up not long ago but may have been missed, I was curious what if any difference there is between typical Maple Syrup and "Organic" Maple Syrup. To me they would both come out of a tree and as long as the tree wasn't sprayed for example if that was even an issue, wouldn't that make most syrup organic by default ?
@MapleFarmer
@MapleFarmer 5 месяцев назад
Yes I want to do a video on this but the main difference is there has to be a buffer between fields and the woods
