Reddit's Fantasy Subreddit (r/Fantasy) has released their Bingo Challenge for the 2024 Season (April 1 - Mar 31). Michael explains the rules, examines the squares, and offers his initial thoughts for which books he will choose for each of the squares.
Apologies, Breton (The doggo) does not appear in this video. He'll be in others, but he really wanted to be in the thumbnail.

Just FYI, even though the bingo challenge is hosted on r/fantasy, the books don't have to be only fantasy. They allow any speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, speculative horror) for any square. That might open up your options for some of them. :)

Howdy. Is that the case for each topic? There are three squares which specify that any speculative works. It makes me wonder why they'd specify in some squares and not say it for all. That would be great, as there is some great sci fi that I plan to get to in 2024 as well. Thanks!

@@thebookdormer Not OP, but yes, it applies to all topics! Anything that's speculative fiction works. Pulling from the FAQ: "As a speculative fiction sub, we expect all books to be spec fic (fantasy, sci fi, horror, etc.)."

@@maiiau Thank you! Wow, apparently I was doing an extra-hard version. That'll teach me! Cheers!

@@thebookdormerYep, for any square it can be any type of speculative fiction as long as the square doesn't specify a limitation. For example, the "Space Opera" square this year specifies a sci-fi and last year there was a square that specified it needed to be horror. I've been participating in r/fantasy bingo for the last couple years and have seen this question asked and answered by the mod (happy_book_bee) that runs the challenge. Here are some quotes from them answering other users in the comments: "It doesn't just have to be fantasy despite our sub's name." and "All speculative fiction, be in sci-fi or horror or fantasy, adult or middle grade or YA, novels and short stories, etc, count for the challenge." I think they specified it in some of the descriptions if the square title was ambiguous. For example the square "Romantasy" specified that it can be sci-fi because the portmanteau of "Romance Fantasy" sounds like it needs to be a fantasy. And the subgenre "Dark Academia" is also used to label non-speculative books, so they specified it needed to be speculative.

@@thebookdormerthey really seem to care more about getting you to read a variety of new books. I saw people do all horror cards or all space Opera cards.

If you haven't read The Secret History, I recommend that over If We Were Villains. I read Villains first, then later realised it's just a worse version of TSH (though it is about 200 pages shorter so it has that going for it). I have Assassin's Apprentice & Lies of Locke Lamora on my bingo card as well, hoping they're good! Really liked the look of Gunmetal Gods when it came out, maybe I should find somewhere to cram that in.

That gunmetal gods book looks so good on a shelf I'm looking forward to when I can cram it in. Thanks for the tip on The Secret History, as I haven't read it. That does seem like the OG for dark academia. Is Hampden College mundane so it would count for Hard Mode?

The bone shard daughter is 5 POV and frankly spectacular magic system. The first published novel Cascade Failure by L.M. Sagas just came out and was also really enjoyable. Legends and Lattes would also work for a Romantasy.

Ohhhhh, I hadn't thought of Legends and Lattes for that. That'd open up Goblin King for the other spot.Nice trick!

Some great picks! As someone else already said it doesn't have to be fantasy, very hard mode :D We have quite a few of the same picks, Empire of Silence, Babel, Lies of Locke Lamora. Great picks with Gunmetal Gods and Something Wicked this Way comes, I may end up stealing those over my choices for the squares, (Annihilation & Pet Semetary)

Steal away! I'm really looking forward to gunmetal gods, I keep checking the shipping info for the hard cover I found.

The Lord of the Rings gave a prologue but not an epilogue, it got apendixes instead.

Doh! Now to find what is in my TBR that has both. That's a rough hard mode. Thanks!
