But which one is more likely to honor warranty if you ride it “off road” lol
@BretTkacs
@BretTkacs 2 месяца назад
Ducati... However Triumph now defines "off-road" which is a nice step forward. If you jump the Triumph it does void the warranty. Ducati doesn't have any we qualifiers like that to cancel warranty
@EdJZatta

Define jump, are we talking Dukes of Hazard or Evil Knevil rocketing over the snake?
@HankOnWheels

@@BretTkacs what does "jump" mean and how would they know?

@HankOnWheels all the electronics and sensors on the bike...I would bet that they can be accessed to tell the story of recent usage
@PetrolJunkie
@PetrolJunkie 2 месяца назад
@@HankOnWheels Airborn sensor in the computer. Most new cars have them, it wouldn't be a stretch to put one on a motorcycle. Essentially it marks the checkbox any time it thinks all of your wheels have left the ground. My truck says it's been airborne but I guarantee it's never been jumped. Going over rail road tracks and feeling the suspension drop out from under the truck was probably enough to trigger it. Likely Triumph has done something simular.

Nice format Bret. Good fun. You had it nailed with the comment: “If I only had one bike, it would be the Tiger”. I’ve done 2,500kms in the two weeks I’ve owned my 2024 Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Can’t stay off it. It’s a brilliant bike.

After test riding both bikes I bought the 900 Rally Pro. The key points for me were stability at higher speeds on road (that steering damper on the Desert X is absolutely necessary), fuel consumption (the Ducati used twice the amount of fuel on exactly the same test route) and price. For similar a specification the Ducati was £5000 more expensive. The Tiger was also far more comfortable for me at 6’3”.

Had a 900. LOVED IT! But I crashed it and broke the engine crank case or something like that. So I purchased the closest thing to it on the showroom floor. Tiger 1200 Rally Pro. Oh my GOODNESS. Best thing ever happened to me. Not a lot of difference in weight, a hella lot of difference in power, performance, vibration, and over all fun. Have ridden it all over America. On and off road. Now I wanna do it again. I love this (these, including the 900) bike. The 1200 is everything you want in a BMW GS without all the bulkiness.

I will say this about the Ducati: I've ridden the Triumph 900, owned a GS1250, a 890R and now the Ducati DesertX. None of them are as easy and confidence inspiring in soft terrain like sand and mud as the Ducati. If you look at the geometry (rake, trail and wheel base) you'll understand why.

I would probably grab the Triumph keys myself. One of the biggest gripes I have about anything Duccati is cost of ownership, more on point the cost of maintenance. Not necessarily shop costs, those are outrageous. Even if you turn your own wrenches on the bike the parts are all more expensive then they need to be and it's done on purpose to discourage people from doing their own work. On top of that, many of the go to after market brands don't have decent parts for most of the Duccoti like up. That said, I would rather something like a Honda 300 or 450 for a haul to the trail head dedicated off road bike. If I want to ride there, my R1250GSA. Yes, it's a touring bike. I will freely admit that, but the GSA still does what I need it to do even on single tracks.

I have a Tiger 900 RP, and I found that the off road performance is significantly enhanced by adjusting the suspension for off road as per the manual. This seems to be little discussed in reviews, but it changes the rake angle, and made a real difference. I wonder if you have done the same, and whether you have any comment on the consequent performance?

The Tiger is an almost complete bike. The only thing missing, imho, is an electronically adjustable suspension. I love the bike, it's awesome. And I love the brand. ❤️ And yet, I'm gonna sell it. Whenever I come to my garage, without much thinking I always pick the other bike, a Husky 701. It doesn't have all the stuff, but it's just so much more FUN and makes me giggle all the time and I feel 20 years younger. 😅 Last year: 200km on the Tiger, 10,000km on the Husky. There's just no argument.

I have the Tuareg 660 and put 7,000 miles on it. I have only test driven the new Tiger 900 rally pro on pavement. The Tuareg seat does not agree with me for longer than 30-40 minutes, though others seem to like it. While riding, the Tiger feels just as light even though it is not. I feel significantly more refinement to the Tiger overall, and definitely more power even though the Tuareg's does not feel lacking. For sure I could do many more miles per day on the Tiger on pavement/gravel and feel much better at the end of it. The Tuareg had no problem doing it, it's just not comfortable seating, though I've done over 500 miles in around 9-10 hours with some rain. I cannot speak to the Tiger offroad. I hope that helps.

I had the Rally Pro for just over two years, eventually putting it in on a speedmaster. At 5’6” it was a little bit too tall for me, don’t get me wrong I took it over to Munich while working out there and Denmark while working out there taking in some long mileage (800+ miles) runs, but I was not confident in taking it off road, mainly due to the height and weight (oh i am 61 too). I have my eye on a possible 2nd bike, for some off road shenanigans and that is likely to be the Himalayan 450 when it eventually gets here in the UK. You never know, if I can work on my skill levels I may well get another tiger, I like the 1200 with its shaft drive, but they are even taller, may need some high heel boots lol

These bikes are incredibly similar... It's really rider choice. The Ducati is more tunable foe people like me that like more control over settings, although most of the time the power is maxed out and everything is off or minimized. The Triumph is a better "do-everything" bike The Ducati's ABS is too sensitive in down hill technical off-road (but can be turned off). The Triumph lacks refinement in the off-road traction control in loose uphill or mud (but it can be turned off). Access to settings is much better on the Ducati

I really didn't notice any significant difference between the DDX and T9 Pro in handling other than the Showa suspension felt slightly better than the KYB. In 23' I'd say the DDX may have been the best OEM suspension of any middleweight... The T9 Pro now has a slight edge. As for fork angle... I don't care about the numbers if it works

What do you think about the maintenance of the Desert X? Is it really that big of a problem or do most of the reviewers exaggerate it?

I think service intervals and their relative costs would have been appropriate topics to be referenced.

We didn't bring it up because they are nearly the same. Both have an 18k valve service and similar intervals on everything else. A desmo valve check is slightly more work because it has an opener and closer instead of just a closer.

Not to mention the ridiculous service costs and the 40 minuete air filter change. If the tiger 900 is as smooth and capable as my old tiger 800. It would be Triumph all the way for me.

Service cost is rediculous for any brand now 🫤 unless you do it yourself and then it's time.

Being able to switch to off-road mode while moving is a big deal for me. I hated having to stop for that on bikes I had before my R1250GS.

Unit Garage... Looks great but doesn't work any better than OEM (6' rider)

Neither one, both are too expensive and more powerful than I need. I'll take a free key for a Transalp XL750, a V-Strom 800DE, or a Tuareg 660 though!
