VN24 - 21-09-2022 - Schwerte A1 / Germany - After a slight rear-end collision of two trucks on the A1 freeway near Schwerte, it almost came to a small inferno in the evening around 18:16. A 51-year-old driver had not noticed a backlog of traffic in time about a kilometer before the Schwerte exit and had slightly rear-ended the tractor-trailer in front of him. Nevertheless, there was smoke development and something had ignited in the area of the driver's cab. The driver was able to exit the cab uninjured and immediately made an effort to smother the developing fire with a fire extinguisher, which he did not succeed in doing. The arriving fire department also made some attempts to extinguish the fire until they ran out of the extinguishing water they had brought with them. Although the entire Unna district is responsible for a total of about 180 kilometers of highway and four to five major interchanges, as well as many rural areas, the fire department obviously does not have a proper tanker for extinguishing water for cases where a sufficient water supply is not expected. Thus, several fire trucks had to be withdrawn from various fire stations, which then had to drive in shuttle traffic always via the highway back to the next exit in the village to pick up new firefighting water at a hydrant, which was then brought in portions to the scene of the fire. The truck burned down completely during this time. The highway had to be closed in the northbound direction for the duration of the operation, initially until the early hours of the morning. After that, a road construction company had to mill off the entire burned road surface and reapply it.
