2126 Horsepower Compound Turbo Mazworx 4 Cylinder - Dyno Pulls - Tuned By Shane T

A Triple Turbo Compound setup is run on a 2.2L 4 Cylinder Mazworx Racing engine based on a Nissan SR20 design. It has a Billet Block, Custom Crankshaft, Aluminum Connecting Rods and Forged Pistons with a factory head casting outfittted with racing valves and springs and uses Methanol for fuel.
The Low Pressure 88mm Compressors are custom built for the application while the High Pressure Stage 2 Turbo is an off the shelf Garrett GT5513 88mm.
The goal output from the engine at 12500 rpm is 3000 horsepower.
This is the initial setup and proof of concept dyno session which took place in April of 2018 at Matt Scranton’s Dyno Facility in Land O Lakes Florida.
The engine has since been placed in a purpose built Pro Mod chassis with a Celica Body and is expected to be completed late in 2022.

Love compounds! Makes cramming a whole lot of air into a not very big space much more possible. My favorite part is the crazy low threshold for building boost.

With this setup we were not trying to use the compound to spread the boost operating range, rather we were trying to increase the boost ceiling. So it doesn’t spool any lower in rpm than it did with the single stage it is simply capable of MUcH more Boost

@@V8Lenny I’ll have to add some of my backpressure data logs of my compound setup to my channel. My setup has horrible backpressure at really low boost(7-10psi) but falls near 1:1 as boost pressure rises to 40psi. Makes less backpressure at 40psi than the big single by itself at 36psi.

​@@makato1955"never fit" you say that like something like this is going on a stock frame and not a tube frame mate to fit the engine. And about the second part, you simply don't know that. If done right with tests and not full beans at the first run, this thing, just like any purpose build engine, could do many many runs. Besides, even if this last only one run, with the money spent on this the owner most likely has enough to replace parts after every run.

This is amazing! Everyone needs to pump up those rookie numbers cause 135psi is absolutely bonkers lol We have a three cylinder Mirage we did a compound setup on, but we're just running a 9B and a 19T as the first and second stages, you guys are crazy LOL Liked and shared!

Nice work Shane. Is the engine surging at the top of the pull, or is the dyno load cell giving up? I bet tuning the pid loop on the wastegates is fun lol.

Load cell on dyno. The intention was to return and let the motec control the water feed valve so the dyno would stop surging, we just never went back.

MTBF 3 secs at 500hp and 8000 rpm. A NA LS does 500hp at 5000rpm for a very long time. Just dyno magic...

I was looking for the update for this monster that introduced me to compound turbo. Starting with 8 extra atm boost, peak cylinder pressure would be crazy regardless how strong the billet block is, how slow methanol burns or how late the ignition is set, probably has to also drop compression ratio as well once the inlet air pressure reaches say 16 atm from 4 times 4. How did the car owner get the idea of making this set up for spark ignition engines? Where are you going to get a stronger dyno? This is reaching tractor pulling and funny car kind of crazy and those are inline 6 and v8s.

We were not sure what to do with the compression ratio. But since we had been successful running our single turbo 2000 hp engine, I convinced them to run the same compression ratio on the compound which is 10:1. The car owner didn’t have this idea to do compounds, I did. We plan to run it on a hub dyno next time. They have no problem with this power level.

So many questions! I'll start with this: is the compressor map accurate once you feed a turbo lots of boost such as into your 2nd stage? I would think not since I assume the map is made using atmospheric pressure therefore the inlet is under vacuum which changes the flow characteristics of the compressor wheel. Please educate me I basically know nothing haha

The compressor flow is based on the air temperature and pressure conditions that exist on the inlet side and the ratio it is being asked to raise the pressure to on the outlet side. If the conditions on the inlet match the corrected conditions on then compressor map, it delivers what is expected. If you increase the air density by raising the pressure by 2, on the inlet, as long as the temperature is back to the corrected condition on the inlet, the compressor delivers 2X what the Map suggests for the particular pressure ratio you are asking for. This is why the compressor map is based on pressure ratio.

Would the surging be visible on the power/torque curve or was it only the gates struggling and is it electronic boost control or mechanical?

Standard pneumatic and spring control, you see it in the turbo speed trace and the pressure between the surging compressor and whatever is upstream. The engine output is only going to respond if the pressure in the plenum varies. If it does, the power will usually drop to about the average of the pressure fluctuation. Because there is fluid between the engine and the load cell in the dyno (water) the real variation is damped out.

We had a much less aggressive tune in the compound engine since we had a much higher boost ceiling.

Second question: I'm not aware of any compressor maps for Xona turbos, so how will you center in on it's optimal efficiency island?

I work with Xona directly. I supply them the data, they verify it against their compressor maps and then supply me with a new compressor as needed.

@@eclipsetrekker yeah they built a test stand to be able to test their compressors and build Maps for them just like Garrett. They know most people can’t understand how the map works anyway so they don’t supply them to anyone. It’s for internal use only. The difference is, most companies not supplying maps, don’t have a way to generate one anyway. That’s why I use Xona for these sort of projects.

I explained this in a different video but the short answer is that at the time there were no single turbos big enough to deliver the airflow needed to make 3000 Hp

Its also using methanol for fuel. Its probably runing richer than 0.6 lambda maybe even as low as 0.5. Top alcohol usually runs that rich.

@@timothybayliss6680 yes true it’s not Petrol I should have mentioned that. It is intercooled we were seeing 90 degree air temps entering the plenum. Because of that we can get away with .65 or so Lambda.

I’m not sure. We will try on the hub dyno before we go to the track but the car must be completed first.

It’s a 2.2 Litre Mazworx SR20. Billet Aluminum Block and Factory Head casting. We were running Methanol.

Yes that is correct. In this case we have 2 turbos feeding a turbo.

Impressive power and tuning. But the engine it's self makes maybe 250 h.p. ? Why bother. Instead, just connect the turbos to the absorber and dyno the turbos. At that level. It is a jet engine with a secondary wobbly turbine. 😉

That's not compound setup, that's tandum setup. Compound is turbo pushing air into another bigger turbo. So cold side of a smaller turbo pushing air to the hot side of a bigger one

I guess you missed the large single that the two smaller ones are blowing into? Hot side = turbine Cold side = compressor Compound does not blow cold side into hot side.
