The EcoVillage at Ithaca was established in 1991 and has become a mature communal village with three neighborhoods developed on 10% of the land with 90% of the land devoted to farmland and natural areas. Given that we're interested in communally living at Flock, we took quite a bit of notes from the EcoVillage, which is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year.

This is why I enjoyed living for nine months in the Netherlands. Walkable cities, never got into a car, let alone drove one, and great public transportation that links the entire continent, not only the country. Also, the human scale of the towns and cities was fascinating. Everything was human-centric. I think some cities are also banning cars in a few years, within this decade of ours, the 2020s.

Finding the right space that you can afford is the most difficult, I looked in Spain, Italy, Canaries. All the spaces that I liked were above my budget. I've looked at some that exist, and most are either vegetarian, vegan, or something else that was unsuitable.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. I think if I could find one in a nice place, I’d live there for my remaining years. It’s such a great idea! I’m 66, single, and this would be perfect for me. I was going to look up tiny house villages maybe in northern Michigan, since I live in MI anyway and love northern MI, but actually, anywhere would work. 🙏💫 Thanks for showing us this beautiful concept!!

I greatly enjoyed my childhood in eco village, being one of the 30 first families of Frog. Before it grew into a small town as it is now. I am an outdoors man and I can credit that to the deep woods and open fields belonging to the eco village property. But as I grew it was clear to me that it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows and the community could be almost cult like at times. If u didn't fit the mold, it was sometimes trouble.

Yes thank you for saying this. I watched thinking how perfect and bucolic this place seems but I think it’s mostly due to its (relative) isolation from other areas. The people seem very homogenous, all have the same outlook and vision. So there is very little crime, litter, noise… paradise for those of us looking for that but it is somewhat artificial. Never the less, I would love to live here it’s beautiful and progressive. It seems perfect.

I have found that to be somewhat the case for co-ops in the medium and larger cities, too. It's a conform or else type of mentality. There is something about being a co-operative that seems to be prone to this sort of thing, especially if more narcissistic individuals are given roles of power where they can manipulate others. In fact, there are hundreds of videos right here on RU-vid where HOAs of all sorts and sizes have been overtaken by power-hungry individuals, so it's not just co-ops that attract this sort of narcissistic personality type.

I always thought to make an eco-village more affordable for low-income people is to create a tiny house/small cabins/yurt community but still with a separate communal building for gatherings and cooking meals together. I wouldn't mind if there was a communal library too. And, of course, a communal garden, and animals of all sorts, and a pond or river on the land.

It only works if like minded people voluntarily put it together and work out all their differences without Government intervention. The government has been providing the equivalent of this for decades and one need only look at inner cities to see they are an abject failure. People willing to WORK can do this and people who aren't cannot.

@@dirkdiggler9379 Most people do not live apart when they are younger to purposely not help others. While I can't speak for everyone as we all have our own way of doing things, I will say that it's most likely that they want a healthy and safe atmosphere for their children to thrive. Also, to provide an opportunity to teach their children some responsibility by taking care of animals, and to grow food that gives them a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Not only that but to provide healthier foods, and entertainment, and keeping them busy instead of growing so bored they find destructive ways of keeping entertained. Considering that the average person can handle no more than 150 different relationships, the size of the village and its neighborhoods seems right. It requires communal engagement, socially, politically and physically. It is supported by the farming hinterlands. Go talk to homosexuals. Plenty of homosexuals, and a lot of them are conservative, will tell you it was far far easier for them to come out as gay that’s a come out as conservative. I’ve seen dozens of videos of homosexuals that said they didn’t lose any friends or family when they came out as gay, but they were dropped like a hot rock when their circle of friends found out that they were conservative or that they voted for Trump. You’re making the huge mistake of comparing evangelicals back in the 70s and 80s with all conservatives. That is a huge mistake on your part! My mother is evangelical and she has no problem with anyone that is homosexual. It’s easier to be gay or transsexual in the conservative community then speak out against Covid or the government or the media or Hollywood as a person of color or as a homosexual with your liberal friends. Why do you think every time a woman or a person of color has tried running for senate or president they get crucified by the media and Hollywood? What do you think Condoleezza rice and Clarence Thomas another black and Hispanic people when they are involved with conservative politics get attacked ruthlessly and relentlessly by the left especially the media. Because they got to keep women and blacks and people of color on the reservation! When you have too many Black people and too many women being successful it shows that the bullshit from the left is nothing but fucking lies! Look at how successful Asians are they call me with nothing but clothes on their back. Look it up people of color from every corner of the globe come to America and are successful but Black people born and raised here or not. What’s the difference? Blacks in America are about 75% a born without a father at home. Hispanics over 50%. There’s no worth it. They don’t have value. Here on RU-vid go watch John McWhorter and Glenn Loury and their podcast. Both of them are black Ivy League professors and thought leaders. McWhorter is a Progressive voted for Hillary Clinton. But he is not woke. They talk all the time along with lots of other blacks people of color women that talk about how what’s hurting Black people and people of color is not racism or conservatives but big government regulations lack of fathers lack of education and more than anything else just a culture in general.

Incredible ratio of land use, basically 90% protection of the land. This is such an amazing option to avoid the typical urban sprawl of larger cities. This warms my heart and literally brought tears to my eyes. I am seriously interested in this type of community. I believe it would be wonderful for myself and my parents. I have been priced out of renting in the Treasure Valley here in Idaho. With the prices in the Boise area and the death of my husband at the start of the pandemic, I was forced into a roommate situation. As my parents want to sell their house while the real-estate boom is going on and they also have a nice bit of equity the timing would be great. The values of the people moving here are far far right, our legislature is full of extremists. As the mother of 2 biracial sons I think our time in Idaho is coming to an end. Just recently Idaho passed extremely suppressive voting laws. I've lived on both coasts and in the middle. I usually get along with everyone, recently I have encountered a very aggressive HOA. I've never felt more uncomfortable in my own community as I do now. The HOA president told me, to my face, that they are going to "get rid of renters". Sorry to go on a bit but with an affordable housing crisis and apathy on steroids this is inspiring.

what are you talking about when you say suppressive voting laws?? I personally would never live under any HOA, that was your mistake. people everywhere are getting priced out and affordable housing is a racket, there is no such thing....thank your liberal federal govt. who keeps letting millions of people over the border when we can't take care of the people already on the streets. your parents should stay put and you should move in with them. idaho has always been a white state and if people don't like right wing, white people, then they should move to a lib town...where crime and homelessness are off the charts because the commies are now running the country and taking us down and collapsing our country which in case you didn't notice, is under attack. the fake R governor of idaho is trying to bring it down and turn it into CA...i hope for the sake of idaho that A. Bundy becomes the governor and restores the white, christian values that people like you seem to resent. you feel uncomfortable because you yourself go around judging people....i am tired of people throwing out that far right term as if iti is a plague. do you know these people? do you talk to them? do you think you are better in some way, than someone who has a different thought process than you? the entire country is under a mass delusional psychosis brought to you by your tyrannical govt. and in the end it will be the people that stand up for themselves that will be left standing. i live in CA under the Newsome regime, he has destroyed CA, we have the highest crime, homelessness, burglaries, worst schools, on and on, is that where you want your kids to grow up? just remember, wherever you go, there you are!

Perfect living! That'show Native American people live communally for ten of thousand of years. May I ask if you care to know the fact that the Second Amendment in the USA was historically put in place in the American Constitution, mainly to encourage slaughtering indigenous Native American people, in order to take over their homeland. Moreover, the hidden mega genocide of indigenous Native Americans, and their population in Continents of America 500 yrs ago was around 15 millions, while European population in Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native Americans population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering 'TWO BILLIONS'! For instance, 200 years ago here in the USA, around 3 million Germans came, and now there are 65 millions German-Americans; while 150 years ago, around 2 millions Irish came, and now there are 45 million Irish-Americans. While 500 years ago there were estimated to be 5 to 6 millions indigenous Native Americans in the USA, before Christopher Columbus arrived, today there are only around 2 million indigenous Native Americans survived. Imagine this scenario, if Native American people cross the Atlantic, invade and Colonize Europe, and slaughter most Europeans, and put the remaining populations in tiny reservations, for 500 long years. How would Europeans feel about it? Think about it. All they need is their beloved motherland back, the lands that their ancestors' forebears had lived through thick and thin, endured through hardships and all for generations. Besides, indigenous Native Americans in Colonized lands of Anglo British, Spaniard and others are more of the same. Kill the indigenous Natives and whoever is left, marginalize them and create artificial poverty, once that poverty becomes crime and drinking, the media points to the poor and blames them to continue to stigmatize the 'other' community, scumbags, etc. Amazing fact that Indigenous Natives had built such great civilizations as Mayan, Inca and Aztec without outside help, and all from scratch, and all on their own, since they had been cut off from the rest of the world for twenty thousand years. In other words, they actually are great and proud people. Imagine what it would be like today if Native Americans had possessed some sort of nuclear weapons to defend themselves, and their beloved motherlands from invaders Colonizers? The answer is they would still have their own beloved motherlands, plus their population comparable to that of the European population. In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people. Remember, notorious global cardinal crimes the West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is this another notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤔

Some people NEED to disparage others ... it just depends on what bigotry is currently in vogue. Disparaging Christians is quite common and openly acceptable in today's world. People tend to pontificate against generalizing negatively by group ... then go on to do it. I'm not religious at all but I'm not anti religion either. Bravo. I'm a sustainable village developer. This project is very significant. Net zero is the path. Wonderful footage. Indoors soiless vertical farming might be a nice addition. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜💡💡💡

This is my idea of living. We are 4 people living a communal life on a farm - all of us over 50. Each with his own living space but we all cook together and have supper together . Great way of living.

This is an amazing example of people taking charge and moving mountains. This community exemplifies perseverance, creativity, diligence, and love for our planet and for humanity. Instead of relying on politicians and government, who are too blind sighted and divided to make anything work for the common good, people like this are liberated through their own choices and actions. Wonderful interview! Thank you for delivering this video to the public view.

I’m from Philly but visited Ithaca to paint the inn at taughannock and then his friend seredipidiously showed me this place called new park Ithaca in trumansburg and it was the most well payed out decorated and cool place I’d ever seen n I have a knack for this..it just lacked the farming nature most important part… I’d love to visit this place n bond more deeply with my 6 year old son… I’d be so humble and help however I could while there… someday I’d love to have my soul tribe and have my kingston family spot among that.. n mimic the world.. I’d want a family from each country.. god bless truth n beauty..I recommend everybody check out new park ithaca

This video is wonderful. Brought tears to my eyes. More and more I am drawn to learning about living in these ways. Perhaps there is a future where myself and others close to me can rally together like Liz did with her peers back in the day to create a sustainable, eco friendly space to call home. So much was covered in this video and I’m super grateful for it. However of course it has spawned about a thousand more questions which will be a fun rabbit hole to dive down. Cheers humans!

It is a really inspiring model to build on for our future that has taken decades of hard work and community engagement that is showed in a very enlightening way through this video.

I wish there were a federal law that made every single HOA in America abide by EcoVillage standards for lawn care. What a difference that would make in solving problems like pollution, organic food production, energy use, etc. I'm having to fight just to get clover approved for a parking strip. It's insane. If we can't get the HOAs to change from within, we have no choice but to go over their heads. One way or another...EcoVillage living is what everyone can and should be doing in this country. Keep up the great work!

As an experiential educator, this seems very much on target with what was done in the 60’s in Vermont and many other places, I think mostly in New England…what a wonderful place. Ideal idea. Food production is such a necessary part of that lifestyle. Looks lovely.

It was a pleasure to watch this report. Thanks for all the interesting questions and the lady explaining all the details how this exceptional community was starting with the idea, fundraising and the purchasing of the land was set up and grew within the years. I think it might be a model for other people to be encouraged either to start this kind of project too or to move in as a rental of one of these houses. Its realy a great place for families and especially kids to live but also the elderly people who are living in that community including having dinnertime together and beeing involved in the community live. Its really nice to see all that space in nature there including the farming. 🥰❤🍀👏👏 🙏
