I wouldn't say Ghana is poor They've just been going through a phase because of bad economic policies and a little tussle with EU
@r.r911
@r.r911 Год назад
@Prince Okilo It's definitely poor... They said it themselves in the video. If you live in a lawless country, you're pretty much poor because you do not have politics who care for their people...meaning people there have to fend for themselves, which means poor. What these countries need to do is build businesses/factories where people can obtain employment so they can survive. No business = no pay, which leaves countries struggling.

These governments don’t really collect much tax. There’s not enough money to invest in industrialisation. Even if there were, it takes many generations to train up the workers needed. You need skilled and educated management and limited corruption. It’s so much more complicated than just the people as well. It requires stable logistics and suppliers as well. I don’t see a way forward for these underdeveloped countries.
@SaintGregosh

Well lets face the facts. Why does not companies invest in Africa with cheap labour. Close to tons of natural resources. The people living there is lazy and corrupt. Not just the leaders. Dont forget China was the last country that was released from colonalism.

I'm Ghanaian, I live in the capital city away from the parts shown initially in the video. Those parts are huge slums, situated along the coast (Jamestown, korle and Bukom). They are some of the oldest townships in the Capital, towns that initially sprung up with the arrival of the British (traders of goods and later slaves). These parts used to be called British Accra. The residents are mainly fishermen and traders and sadly place very little priority on education and are consequently caught in cycle of generational poverty, a plight worsened by a poor economy. They however have produced most of the famous boxers that have come out of Ghana, including the hall of famer Azumah Nelson. The other part of the video shows largely non Accra natives, who have moved from other parts of the country to the Capital in search of a better life but have found themselves doing odd jobs and trades and have resorted to living in the slums as the opportunity they had hoped for is highly lacking thanks to the declining economy. It's quite unfortunate but there are no signs that this situation will change for the better any time soon.

@KwekuTed
@KwekuTed Год назад
@@yaamanu3974 the point I'm alluding to isn't the length of time th slum communities have existed for but rather the growth of the slums in recent years and the underlying causes. There's the problem of investment and low employment prospects especially for unskilled labour plus major issue of affordable housing in the capital. Top that off with the pervasive issue of rural urban migration and the result is what we see today; This is attributable to the economic climate prevalent in the country.

My little brother have married Ghana girl some 15 years ago. She got pregnant and they decided to move to Serbia, from where we are, because of the better health care system, easier to give birth, economy... at least better than it is there. That girl was really extraordinary person, she was icon of our 25k citizen city, polite, nice, beautiful and educated girl. And then, as only life can set up, she gave the birth and after some complications on the birth and not proper reaction of medical stuff, she passed away. The girl she gave birth to is today one beautiful and warm-heart person above all. On the funeral, came their relatives from Ghana and we met them all. Amazing and very nice people too. Why I tell you this story? I see that many people confirm that people from Ghana are very warm heart and good people. People that I met was as well very good and polite. Even my cute cousin girl, born in Serbia, never seen Ghana ever, is also extraordinary person and I cant get of impression that it is not only because of the culture and tradition there, but must be something genetic too involved in this people character shape. Greetings for all people of Ghana, with wishes to get rid soon of neocolonialist exploitation and develop their own economy welfare. Hope better days coming for Africa and other oppressed and abused people around the world.

Ha ha. I live in Michigan. Born and raised in Ghana. Got my masters in engineering there and came to US to get my PhD. Stop thinking Ghana or Africa is all about slums, poor people and dysfunctional politics. It isn't. Those are the popular stereotypical versions. The part that frustrates me is that each and every help or pity given by foreigners or foreign governments further delays the govt the Ghanaians elect every 4 years from actually fixing the place. Ghana has number 2 or 3 most expensive real estate market on the continent. And I believe among top 5 stock market capitalization. We are world producer of cocoa gold bauxite manganese and recently crude oil. 30 million population paying huge taxes and revenues to our political elite. But we don't get squat in return. This is what needs to be talked about. Not how poor and "beautiful" we are and all this patronizing garbage. We don't need anyone's largesse or prayers. We need to figure out how to dispose of the vampires parasitizing the people.

I showed this video to my Ghanaian parents. They weren’t impressed. 😅 They said there are so many beautiful places to see in Ghana but this blogger went out of his way to show only poverty and struggle which they found very unkind. Many people will see Ghana for the first time through this video and this will be the lasting impression. I partially agree with them, I’ve spent a lot of time in Ghana growing up and never seen these places, so while this was insightful for me, At the same time I understand my parents. People don’t do travel vlogs to London and Paris & Rome, explicitly hunting for ‘poverty porn’ to show their audiences who know preciously little about the region, but when many white westerners come to Africa it’s their favourite thing to do. 😅 where’s the balance?! Of course there is poverty, but why is that all you want to show? There is more to Ghana than just poverty and I hope the rest of your Ghana content brings that to light. Looking forward to your future videos in Ghana!🇬🇭 Edit: this was comment was intended to be constructive criticism and I welcome discussion in the comments. I’ve seen people saying showing balance and better areas would be ‘boring’, and the scenes of poverty make for a more entertaining video, as well as ignorant comments saying the people in Ghana not living in slums are “the lucky few”. Yikes! Comments like this are exactly the reason why balance was needed! 😳

@nameisamine
@nameisamine Год назад
@@channyj784 did you read the comment? It’s not about not showing any poverty at all, that’s ridiculous, but it is about balance. Show the poverty, but show some success too, show some hope, show ambition, show beauty, show the people making Ghana a better place, a lot of the people he interviewed were despondent about the future. When I’m there with my family we see hopeful people working on countless exciting projects to better their communities. E.g. My grandfather funded a hospital/health clinic for his village, there are soooooo many positive stories to tell. These stories are also in abundance. This is why westerners making a beeline to showcase poverty porn is very lazy of them. It’s low-hanging fruit. It’s a *predictably trite* and *uninspired* way to portray these countries. *I fear it’s the only narrative of Africa they wish to promote, and if that’s the case, that’s disappointing. I hope that’s not the case!* It’s because of videos like this that people at my school think countries across Africa are just mud huts and slums when that’s not the case. 😤 I fear it inadvertently ends up fuelling racist views of the continent. *Corrective promotion* is DESPERATELY needed to create a more balanced holistic view. Creators like *Wode Maya* and other black creators - * actually from the continent* - try to fight back against the western narrative with *corrective promotion.* Meanwhile, these white creators continue to push poverty porn with a smile, because the truth is, their audiences are FAR more entertained by despondent African poverty porn than by Africans building better futures for themselves and their countries.🙄

@@montannamontanna4408 as a Ghanaian you should know the contribution increased tourism will have on Ghana’s economy. There’s a lot of beauty in Ghana, why not show some of it? Why only show the poverty? That’s strange and very one-sided. My argument is if you want to help these nations they should push the touristic elements too and not just the ‘poverty porn’ that some westerners prefer to push to the forefront because they want shock value . It’s almost as if they treat the poverty as entertainment, like a trip to the zoo to see how the third world live, so they can point in shock and fascination, all before hopping back on an air conditioned 747 to return to their countries to tell the tale. I don’t care for it 🤷🏾 I just hope the other Ghana vlogs don’t choose to focus exclusively on poverty. 🤞

The condition of country should be judged about how the poorest people live. The country can only be described a good if the condition of the poorest is also good, great wealth notwithstanding. Eg, people say the US is a wealthy country, but it turns out that a large proportion of families don't have $400 of savings to handle a emergency. Reality shows and soap operas featuring well off people are not a true measure of reality.

There's alot more positive in Ghana than negative. No matter where you go in the world there will be poverty but that's not the whole of Africa. That's why I enjoy watching Wode Maya. So much positivity happening on the continent.

The polluted rivers affect everyone though. Maybe even neighbouring countries. No matter how good some people have it, the poverty situation seems to be getting worse - since the government is ignoring the people.

I love this kind of content where it's not some stupid propaganda or fake news. Just normal people telling about their lives in places where most of us would never go.

Hey, I'm from London and I lived in Ghana for a while a few years ago. It is so beautiful, the people are friendly and it's very safe. You don't really need a guide, if that's what is holding you back. I hope one day you get to go and enjoy the country.. I can guarantee you will fall in love with Ghana. Xx

Totally overwhelmed at the power of your presentations, Nick. You are doing a great service, telling these stories and making the rest of us more aware of the struggles of people just like us. I'm an American walking the streets of Baghdad for the past few days and wish I had the talent to tell their story like you do. Keep up the GREAT work and safe travels!
